The biggest joy is FINDING THE GROOVE as a sample based producer after that everything else is a walk in the park 🔥😎🤙🏾
All this brilliance comes from talent, but not only talent. Even if you don't have talent, you can be very very good if you always practice. Doing the same thing every day for hours is what makes you a brilliant artist.
I remember reading as a kid a article about some scientific study that came out that showed practicing a skill for 1 hour a day will make any person good at it in 10 years max. Not exeptionaly great but good as a trained professional
Yes and all great ones were obsessed with their craft. Obsession for greatness.
'They'll bury me with my SP1200' - Pharoahe Monch
I suspect Pete Rock feels the same.
Looks like he like using the Akai Mpc as well but I definitely follow what you saying God Bless stay true✊🏾
the clip of him loading up (what I assume were) the OG samples from Ahmad Jamal/The World Is Yours is a trip to watch
Unless someone does the Dilla thing. His is in a museum
This guy is like a master of beats "World is yours and Gimme yours are some of the best melodic beats ever"!!!!
People forget how nice he has always been and iconic for hip hop. HOF producer. Legend 💯🎯🎶🎶🎤🎤
His beats are always a masterpiece
Pete Rock changed my life period
Damn he makes it look so easy.

SHIT i didn't even know beatmakers were supposed to read producer credits but my jazz background told me that anything by Orrin Keepnews or Rudy Van Gelder was gold from a sampling standpoint. Holy moly my mind is BLOWN.

His idea of cut, edit of samples.
Certainly dines at the Top Table of Hip Hop beat making does Mr Rock ✌🏼🎧🎛🎹
This is a great video but in all honesty just as a suggestion that flickering effect is annoying and distracting as hell.
Thanks and someone else didn't like that effect either. Was just something new I was trying. But I won't use it anymore since it seems to bother people too much. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@BackToTheBoomBap All good. Trial n error. Thanks for not taking it personal because the content is prime. 👊🏽
@@tomcbeatz appreciate it. No problem. I'm always trying to improve.
5:48 what sample is this....?
Not sure.
Ha…Pete has vinyl in Arby’s cardboard boxes.
Pete Rock is one of the best hip hop producers of all time hands down. The stuff he does with samples is ridiculous. His run of the early 90s with multiple groups and remixes can't be touched. As for longevity there's only one other producer that can touch him and it's Dj Premier. These two are the godfathers of East coast underground hip hop.
Word! I would def add Easy Mo Bee and the RZA/WuTang Productions to it.

Pete Rock is god status.
It's killing me everyday, but the world needs more Pete and C.L.
Near the ending of "T.R.O.Y." Pete Rock says "Never be another" this line for me always made think of both of them,
regardless of what it was actually intended for.
Thank you for that heartfelt comment. Legendary producers like Pete, Dilla and Premier are like Marvel's Avengers to me. It's my mission that any young person who hasn't heard of them will learn on this channel. I'm glad to know that there are people like you out there who view this music the way I do.
Definietly check for his collab with Skyzoo called Retropolitan! They make a great team!

@@BackToTheBoomBap bro tell me the name of the beat at 3:00min
I saw Pete Rock make a beat in the studio. It was dope how fast he grabbed the sample and flipped it.
Wow, sounds like an amazing experience
"They don't like it too much on the beat"
Word.
I hate how many beat makers today overproduce beats that it overlaps the vocals.
These young producers are getting back to it with their own new trap style the beats are still very simple
Well... the vocals come afterwards.... which means the rappers did too much on the beat. But hey
Jingle bell beats all sound the same in today's cookie cutter autotune mumble era. I'll pass on the guys that start with Lil, Young, Asap. And others. Lol

Me from the UK, from day one when I got into Hip Hop in the early 1908's when I was collecting Break Beats, I have always noticed that established American producers such as Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Qtip, Diamond D,Large Professor, Show Biz AG, Marley Marl, 45 King, Dr Dre, was that they were very Musical, like they studied music Theory, composition, Harmony, Rhythm, Melody,
Pete's Shut 'Em Down is underrated
It's the greatest remix of all time, period. I don't care WTF anyone else has to say. Hold it now!!!
Hey I just wanna say I really appreciate what you do for the culture by putting all of this together in one place, shit would’ve helped me out a lot a few years ago fr so I know it’s gonna help the new producers coming up
You're welcome and I appreciate the kind words. I want to make sure the boom bap never leaves the hip-hop conversation.
Pete is still magic. They way he puts music together alone is crazy.
The drum master! How does he get those hits so clean and crispy? Peace.
eq and good drum selection
Mecca and the soul brother is still the wildest and most musical hip hop album made especially for its time period & shut em down has to be one of the top 3 remixes of all time.
I appreciate you bro. Mecca And The Soul Brother is phenomenal! One of the songs that blows me away from it is For Pete's Sake.
I would advise yot to listen to the album called "Center of attention" from ini, produced by PR. If you haven't listened to it yet, it will blow you away. It still blows me away and I've been listening to it for almost 20 years now
Pete rock j dilla madlib are a heavy influences of my style of making beats……first got into him as a youngin playing NBA Street vol 2 and hearing those heavenly horns during the menu music, discovered dilla and madlib through adult swim bumps mannnnn pre 2010 was a beautiful time
Truly. For people that decided to dive deeper into music, there was a ton of gems to be found
Same. There was this other ps2 game named aggressive inline that had jaylibs the red and that was one of the 1st songs that made me fall in love with hip hop. I'd been hearing the music since I was in my moms womb but that one was special for me back in the day. I'd loop that and don't sweat the technique in the game all the time lol
That's my dude...Mad humble and just insanely fonky 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
the creases above this man's finger nails shows how long he's been hittin those pads. 30 years thru 5 decades. PETE ROCK is a LEGEND and should be in the Smithsonian
Damn he mentioned the "Fisher Price" record player. I remember that as a little boy around '74/'75. Me and my aunt who was 13 or 14 had one of those.
This man has payed his dues when it comes to music equipment.
He makes it look so easy.
Yep. That's where talent meets a lot of practice.
Will forever be one of my favorite producers. Taking notes on this Forsure
Funny Pete has said he makes his beats with a simple approach but he's a genius taking samples from different records making them blend together seamlessly with his own drums and basslines etc
I know right. It's simple to him because he has a talent for it lol. What he does is far from easy.
I thank God for being born in this era 🙏🏽 Pete Rock and everyone who taught us all this! Thank you 💯 Back to the Boom Bap! thank you!
🙏🙏🙏 You are welcome! Thank you for watching! You're the reason why I made this channel. People who appreciate hip-hop music and culture.
Did he say Premier did the scratches on The World Is Yours?
Pete said Premier was in the room while he was doing the scratches.
Sorry Dre will never come close to Rock. That first cl and rock album should have been given 5 mics! No way it wasn’t. That should have been recognized. Pete rock should be in the hall of fame, that should tell you they know nothing about hip hop.
Pete rock is the realest of the real
I love pete rock and dj premier to death they definitely rep and landscape the sound track to the 90s hip hop and rap sounds but you have to include the large professor in there too

Man Pete Rock is one of the best to do it.I could go on and on with a slew of other producers who are dope also, but with Pete Rock he was just doing different stuff and coming up with all sorts of sounds.Just unbelievable the art form and style he uses. It’s out of this world!!!
Pete Rock is a legend I wish he worked more with Nas. Primo and PR shoulda done a whole record with Nas
Pete has recently re-overtaken DJ Premier as my all time favourite producer since I broke out Mecca and the Soul Brother and a couple of other albums that solidified me as a Hip-Hop Head (Nineteen Naughty III/Bacdafucup/Illmatic/Breaking Atoms).
I'm even thinking of breaking out the cassette player because those albums sounded so much better on tape.
Thank you for your comment. You can't go wrong having either producer as your favorite. I'm really looking forward to that Common and Pete album. Much like Premier, he really shines when he locks in with one great mc for a whole album.
I've always considered Pete Rock to be one of the 3 production GODS at the top of HIP HOP OLYMPUS' pantheon. As far as the pantheon goes, he's Poseidon. DJ Premier is Zeus. RZA (when RZA was dope) is Hades. No one is fucking with the work those 3 have done. They're the all time greats. True legends.
When Rza was dope? I still love Rza though. Even though he's off doing movie scores now. We may never get the raw gritty Rza back unless his clan members get him bring it back. But he'll always make my list though.
@@BackToTheBoomBap Well, RZA doesn't make dope music any more, and he hasn't in nearly 20 years. He fell off a LONG time ago. It's a hard pill to swallow, but it what it is. I still love the dude, as he's one of the dopest producers to ever do it, and when he was in his prime, he was the BEST, and no one (not even Premo) was touching him. But his output has been trash for years, and I'm a serious Wu head saying this. I gotta keep it real. Did you hear his last solo album, Digi Snax?😞
@@shinbakihanma2749 nah. I haven't heard it. Digital Bullet pissed me off enough. Haven't really liked his beats in the last few years. Dark Fantasy was dope but a ton of people probably worked on that.
@@BackToTheBoomBap If Digital Bullet pissed you off, then Digi Snax will turn you into the HULK, because it was downright awful. It was one of the worst albums I've ever heard in my life. Imagine Tical 0, 8 Diagrams, and A Better Tomorrow had an orgy of utter aural awfulness. Digi Snax is what that orgy would ultimately sound like😔
I would replace RZA with j dilla, q tip or Ye either of those 3

Thanks so much for posting this! I have always loved this style of hip hop music ever since I heard Herbie Hancock's "rockit". Used to carry linoleum back and forth from school so we could breakdance on it.... would spray it with pledge to make it more slippery. We even did a routine in front of the school and they brought in a crew to an assembly. I have always been a listener and admirer REAL hip hop but unfortunately (but fortunately...better late than never) It is just now that I am discovering how to make this incredible music. I have already watched this 3-4 times since I found this late last night. I am so stoked to learn about the people behind the rappers and see how they made this forever lifechanging music for me. That and actually trying to freestyle instead of just memorizing other lyrics! I was also watching the 9th Wonder vid and I am super excited! I have been fumbling around with beats but now, with this lightbulbs are flashing so much! Humbled, blessed and grateful!
Well, you're in the right place brother. I nerd out about music production so it's about to get deep on this channel. There's a lot I don't know but I know where to find the information. I feel like it's gonna be a learning experience for myself and my viewers.
@@BackToTheBoomBap Cool. Can't wait! 👍👍
I have No idea how he would make it stretch spreading it up hisself!! Back then!!!!! Gifted
If you're talking about when he sped up and slowed down the sample in that one video clip, I read a comment on an old forum about that today. Now, keep in mind I'm no expert because I never used a mpc. But the guy was saying that Pete was able to speed it up and slow it down by chopping up the sample. I'm guessing he hit record and tapped out the sequence and then he was able to change the tempo to his liking on the playback. As many times as I watched that video I was super confused until today. But yeah he's a musical genius!
