Unohana Retsu: THE FIRST KENPACHI | BLEACH: Character Analysis

- Опубликовано: 15 окт 2024
- Unohana is the caring figure of the gotei 13 she is the Captain of the 4th Division. She is one of the oldest captains within BLEACH along with Yamamoto, Shunsui and Ukitake. In this video I go through every moment of Unohana, including her encounters with various different characters like Aizen and Ichigo. Lastly I discuss her relationship with Kenpachi Zaraki extensively, going through their past and their battle which takes place during the Thousand Year Blood War arc. So lets analyse one of the best written women within BLEACH.

I always wondered why there was that running gag where everyone was scared of Unohana but her being the FIRST KENPACHI was NOT what I was expecting AT ALL
Same

I knew there was SOMETHING, but didn't expect to strike G🥇LD
Yeah, damn who'd though to head doctor was also the Original killing Machine!!
best scene when the Execution Squad of Hueco Mundo retreated when seeing Unohana on the battlefield. She's a straight up boss
Same, I just thought it's because she's like a big sister/mother figure among the Captains.
*Unohana checking Aizen’s body*
“I’ve made my fair share of corpses and this corpse is looking a little sus”
Lmao she was very sus during that scene.
Wait so she couldve wiped the floor with Aizen? Because why wouldnt you fire your strongest warrior at Aizen?

Unohana: I said there is something very unusual here...

She was such a ruthless warrior that she didnt even monologue about her Bankai

@@bri1085 Zaraki never realized about the soul of his zanpakuto, it is yachiru. it is so strong that other people can see her and interract with her but kenpachi never realized it...
that's why Unahana knew Kenpachi is far more strong that her, but he wasnt able to unlock his full potential, that's why Unohana kill him again and again so he will unlock it and after the battle, Zaraki able to comunicate with his sword for the first time.
Zaraki and Unohana could have grown more stronger TOGETHER Kubo didn't decide to kill her
If kubo didn't*
@@Christian-rr7oq unohana has already reached her peak, for a long time already.
Thats why she went as far as dying to train Kenpachi since she knows he still has a lot of room for him to grow, unlike her.
She is soooo old, she's mastered ger own techniques. Mastered "healing", totally opposite of what she's good at, and still mastered it. Sh reached the heights of her abilities, like killing Zaraki many times even with his eyepatch removed, when most captains already have hard time with his eyepatch on.
Unohana was fricking cool even with her short screen time.
Page-time sounds more accurate
She's an underrated character personally she could potentially be one of the coolest female anime characters
Everyone is a Gangster until Captain Unohana Retsu walks in with a smile
And with her hair down while also making her eyes look menacing.

Totally, although the power system fascinates me a lot too. The depth to the zanpakuto and one's inner world, the powers that are a reflection of the soul... Hats off for Mister Kubo
OST is also a masterpiece
However Bleach’s need to give EVERY character a backstory is one of the things that bogged it down given its vast cast of characters.
@@NothingBetterToWatch or expanded. I mean, not everyone has a very detailed backstory, but enough for you to understand the basics of them. I think, as we are talking about what makes Bleach shine, it's side characters (or in general, it's characters) are definitely one of it's bright stars.

The reveal of Unohana's true identity was one of the biggest twists in bleach. I think there was a part of her that enjoyed saving lives as opposed to taking lives and wanted to stay as "Unohana Retsu" for the rest of her life. But with the threat of the Quincy, she knew that her days of healing were coming to an end and felt great remorse for what she needed to do. One of the other subtle things I really like about the fight between Unohana and Kenpachi, is how it shows just how much fighting is a part of how they are. Both of them had become isolated, alone and depressed, because of how strong they were (another recurring theme for several characters within the series who are considered ‘The Strongest of their kind’. Aizen, Starrk and Gremmy being examples of this).
So, when the Kenny and Unohana found each other, it allowed both of them to feel true joy.
Unohana even states in her dying moments, that Kenny was the only man, who ever made her truly happy. Add that to the accompanying visual of Kenpachi literally piercing her with his sword, and her internal monologue about how she felt shameful about the fact that it was a child was the one to make her experience a true sense of ecstasy...
The story of the two Kenpachi’s, is actually the most underrated love story in Bleach. Between it and the Gin and Rangiku story, Kubo is honestly really good at writing tragic romances.
And once again, I must praise Kubo on his artwork, for being able to illustrate the dual personas of Unohana as beautifully as he did.
A great analysis as always. Unohana is a wonderful characther and you really did her justice! Looking forward to the next one!

Throughout the manga and anime, you would always see how easily she would intimidate the senior members of the gotei 13. @@SinHurrThat is like her being sadist but lightly
It's interesting she seemingly tried to redeem herself from her life of bloodshed by helping others only to have that end to train Zaraki with its fatal outcome. As crazy as it may sound her death was probably her way of redeeming herself even if she reverted to her bloodthirsty serial killer past in that time. She represents the light and dark duality of Gotei 13.
It was stated that she learned medic techniques just so she could kill even more...
@@randomzzz6542 agree unahana was dark character by nature that learned to love healing and i remember line of start of gotei 13 at beggining they all were bunch of killers
I ain't gonna lie; I was really surprised when I first read about her being the first Kenpachi. Like, really surprised. Because she's always been so beautiful, kind, and a great healer. Loving her plants. You would've never thought that she used to be a bloodthirsty killer. Anyway, great analysis, man.
the best part is how Kubo shifts the healer trope. Think how messed up it is, when a healer keeps healing you so you can suffer more, or heal herself to keep fighting. You wont die against her until she makes the call that you have suffered enough.
I always had the suspicion that Unohana was more than meets the eye. Her nonchalantly walking through the battlefield with her weakass assistant; Her way of talking with Captain Yamamoto like they're old time buddies; Everybody doesn't want to mess with her.
She exudes a charm of a veteran warrior even back in the Soul Society arc.
But damn, her being the first Kenpachi was a nice twist.
Lmao yeah the safest in a battlefield is probably walking nonchalantly with unohana.
No you didn’t…
You’re just a bandwagon just like everyone else. If she was just a healing doctor you wouldn’t care about her at all…
@@SoulReaperSlayer19 err, this has been a long standing theory/speculation that Unohana was a powerful shinigami ever since she was introduced. A lot of people has been on board this "bandwagon" from the beginning. It was nothing new.
And you do know that the "silent healer/support/doctor/motherly figure turns out to be insanely strong" has been a common trope in anime, right?
I'm pretty sure you're mistaking on the pile of bodies. Her squad member asked if he should get rid of the pile of bodies, she replied that she wanst the one who made the pile, then Kenpa appeared. Those were Little Kenpachi kills
Yep. The other mistake is he said kenpachi getting stabbed through the throat was imagined because of his fear, when the blood drop that flys off from it and hits unohanas face and then stayed there after the fact showed she really did stab him then healed him. Still a great vid as always though.
@Frozen Monster Makes sense. Because it was like killing an ant's rather than killing a foe. Unohana are badass af.
Great call. The TYBW anime confirms this in the latest episode(ep. 10)
One of the best foreshadowing in Bleach. The "Running Gag" has the Thirteen Court Guard Squads fearing her, then when you find out what she's like in her earlier life, it all starts to make sense
Kenny didn't just respect unohana, I think he loved her in his own way. Who would subconsciously weaken themselves just to be able to relive that fear of facing her.
It was just admiration of strength. No more, no less.
@@unbowedqueen He loved the fact that someone stronger than him appeared
I'll teach Zaraki Kenpachi...the art of killing..
@Maddening Hustle69 Well I think that was part " teach "
She’s the mother of all mothers: living a wild and crazy life, only to give it all up for her children (mainly Kenny) ONLY to revert back to it just to show her kids (still mainly Kenny) how to grow up
After reading about Unohana's past and rewatching bleach it is amazing to see the subtle details in her character. I was shocked to see how far Kubo seemed to have planned ahead. It made each interaction with her more unique and truly showed in each scene. She was more than just feared by other captains she was revered by them. Also, if I remember correctly Zaraki named his lieutenant Yachiru and now I see it was out of admiration.
Wonderful video.
From the beginning I always knew she was overpowered. She had the smile of don't cross me. Great video dood.
She never showed up much but I always liked Unohana as a character, her caring personality paired with the fact that she had this uncanny ability to intimidate anyone made her a really fun character to watch. I also enjoyed how just a simple change in expression and letting her hair down makes her go from looking like a gentle mom to looking like a bloody psychopath
The parallel with MGS3 is spot on. Both are masterpieces that show how "succesfully subverting expectations" should be done.
Fully agreed
Yeah, I've never player MGS3, but that speech at the end of video seemed it was made specially for Unohana vs. Zaraki, seeing how well it fits.
It's not *quite* a 1:1 parallel, just close to it. Big Boss was... not stronger than The Boss, he couldn't have won that fight if she'd been trying to win. She was trying to lose, but not to the extent of completely throwing.
YEAH BABYYY, THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR. THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
I wished she didn't have to die and we could have seen her fight in the quincy war.
she swore to not fight with her sword, No way in hell she had any plans to fight them.
I agree. Her death really didn’t sit well me. I would’ve liked it better if she lived after training Kenpachi to unlock his zanpakuto.
When i read those chapters during TYBW I literally cried. Call me sick or psycho but this relationship between(specially during the fight) Zaraki and Unohana felt like love. Love where you wanna release all of yourself and feel all of the other person.
When Unohana died in Zarakis hands It got me the feeling when you found again the person you truly loved only to lose her the next moment. Truly heartbreaking... Specially When you saw her joy, happiness, laughter, excitment and you could be your old self moments ago.
Even right now it brings pain....
Ichigo's face when she wanted to run in front of him on the way to go fight Izen was brilliant. He could sense it.
I’ve heard she was stronger than Kenpachi. I never believed it. But now, she’s terrifying. It’s always the calm ones.
After a decade she is still one of my most favorite female anime character alongside tsunade, and boa hancock. Unohana is a character that others may feel that is weak, fragile, someone that is always a target of bullies but little did they know that she is the one, the strongest of them all, the character who always love fighting. This made me like Yachiru even more and she is up there with my favourite characters from bleach along with Ichigo & Kenpachi. I cannot wait for this Arc to arrive 💫
Unohana is one of my favorite characters and this analysis of her character really did her justice!
This is very well done sir. Misses Unohana is greatly underrated and under appreciated.
I wished we could have seen her fighting the arrancar and Quincys. Sure she wouldn't have been able to counter Aizen or Yhwach
Yamamoto and unohana are enough to manhandle aizen and his espadas
I think she was the real last resort against aizen.
During the fight with aizen and arrancar. Yama order her to stay in Soul society for the reason of being a medic even tho he knew her past and capabilities. Tbh the last resort idea is not far from true.
The greatest allusion to Unohana's past is the fact the she was by far the greatest known medic in the seireitei. Back in ye olden days executioners/torturers would often become doctors because they knew exactly how to hurt people. Inversely, they would also know how to fix those injuries so the target of their treatment wouldn't die too soon.
"Instead of having two powerhouses, let's just have one kill the other to get slightly stronger."
This is why SS deserved to lose.
Slightly, lol. It was stupid because she didn't need to die. Kenpachi had already reached his full power before he killed her.
@@azearaazymoto461 EXACTLY! WHY KILL OFF THE TWO POWER HOUSES? IT WAS SO DUMB!
It's not slightly, Kenpachi was about a hundred times stronger the moment Yachiru was done with him, a shinigami become about 10x stronger with awakened shikai and about 25 times stronger with Bankai, this is not counting the countless times that he is revived and getting stronger. We see how significant his "power ups" were, during SS arc he can only fight on par with Ichigo Shikai and loses barely but after that near death he can beat Nnoitra ranked 5th Espada who is stronger than Grimmjow. So he has become far more powerful not slightly. Also, if she didn't die doing this she wouldn't have fight anyway, that's her conviction, she convinced herself to not ever fight again due to her "sin" of making the most powerful opponent weak
@@t.390 Because that was her "legacy" there is nothing else she wanted to live for and can u blame her for how old she is?
Honestly I agree with you. Why in the world would you not let arguably your best swordsman die, but by no doubt your best and most skilled healer die in a war no less?
Got keen senses as only her and old man Yama managed to not be completely fooled by Aizen's shikai as I'll say maybe only Shunsui could be matching her in pure swordsmanship.
You’re underrated as hell these analysis are really good
She is captain of the 4th squad. And in Chinese or East Asian culture, number four means bad luck or even death. I even thought it ironic before (and kinda sus) that she carried that number since she heals people which prevents their deaths. After knowing her back story, it kind of make sense.
Such a beautiful dynamic between two kenpachis. Thank you for this beautiful analysis ❤️
So Kenpachi fought Kenpachi, but due to the lack of strength from Kenpachi, Kenpachi decided to limit himself.
Kenpachi then stepped down as captain of the 11th, and Kenpachi became the new captain, while Kenpachi wandered around untill one day showing back up and killing Kenpachi to become the captain of the 11th himself.

I always wondered why some characters reacted in utter fear to some things she said. Now I know. This is awesome.
This is so good. Can't wait for the Yhwach analysis.
Thank you for this. I had missed the importance of Unohana and her background really. This was a really fantastic breakdown.
I wonder if it's a plot loophole that Kenpachi, Kuchiki, and Kurotsuchi were not present for the final battle with Aizen because they had still never seen Kyokasuigetsu's release.

In a way the story of Unohana and Zaraki is basically a love story but just a really clever and twisted version. Normally two characters express mutual emotions in a romantic way and they "complete each other" thru a traditional interaction. Zaraki and Unohana basically do the exaxt same thing except they substitute battle for romance. Even the way Zaraki holds her when he kills her and pleads with her to not die while she tells him its ok and she can pass away happy and content because of him is straight out of a typical love story... just... with swords. Its really cool.
Retsu : heal everyone :)

Unohana has always been my favorite character in Bleach. Like, she's too virtuous a character she's hiding something. Her being looking too young, being a medic yet being feared by others don't help either. Something in her is just too mysterious and the Thousand Year Blood War arc revealed everything, and why she is my favorite character

Unohana is one of the best character in bleach and will always be my number 1. I wonder did Zaraki fell in loved or granted respect to unohana after he killed her because there were an image at 31:51 that said "don't die". Anyway seeing unohana needing to die to not carry on the title kenpachi made me cry.
Unohana is more like a mentor or teacher to Zaraki. She dies mentoring him to become the strongest Kenpachi. That's why Zaraki respected her so much.

Zaraki holding Unohana in his arms, begging for her not to die is a little heart breaking. He doesnt want to lose his oldest rival, yet shes ready to move on after completing her goal.
It was shown in the data books how powerful she was early on, but her being the first kenpachi was like okay now I see why she was so strong. It was weird how at the beginning when it showed everyone's stats her's was so high but she never fought.
Unohana could have an entire anime just about her. Such an incredible character, especially when you consider how many characters are in the story.
It was the reveal of Unohana's true identity that made her my favourite character of all time. Up until that point, every women in anime and shonen manga that I had watched and read were either: weak, useless, or had a really bad personality. I didn't like female characters at all, and as a woman myself, this really upset me. I wanted there to be a strong woman and just couldn't find one. I was getting tired of the women being written poorly and extremely sexualised.
I read the Bleach manga, and along with it came Unohana. I didn't pay any attention to her at first because she was the healer, and I said "Of course, the women are the healers. Ugh."
I was so wrong. Come TYBW, it turns out she's one of the most powerful shinigami and she was just hiding her true self. I was so happy. The moment she revealed herself to be the first Kenpachi, she became my favourite character of all time. The following chapters showing her backstory and her fight with Kenpachi Zaraki made me fall in love with her more.
My life changed after reading the Bleach manga. Kubo created and wrote a woman in a shonen manga that wasn't like the others. Unohana wasn't overly sexualised like the women are in One Piece, and Unohana wasn't useless and written poorly like the women in Naruto. These were the most common issues I found with how the women were written in shonen.
Bleach is my favourite series of all time, and Retsu Unohana is my favourite character of all time. I will be forever grateful to Kubo for writing Unohana the way he did. He gave me hope that maybe, shonen manga authors will stop writing women with the common useless, weak, and overly sexualised tropes. We've already seen some of it in Jujutsu Kaisen, with Nobara and Maki. I hope the way women are written in shonen will continue to change and abandon these bad tropes.
...this somehow turned into a short essay... Sorry about that 😅😅
👏👏👏👏
I think the animes that bring female characters justice are jujutsu kaisen and black clover, including bleach,Noelle and Nobara kugisaki were really good characters and have personalities that are relatable and good
And please don't ever watch Fairy Tail, you probably stress a lot you know.
Very agree! I'm a fan of female character of every anime. And mostly getting disappointed in the end one of example you already mentioned is Sakura. 😔 She has a potential but the author sucks! She is poor written and i expect so much from her because of Ino, i though author put her for Sakura's character development to become stronger just like naruto x sasuke rivalry. But yikes i didn't happen.
Today Yoruichi and Tsunade are the two strongest character i like the most. And now unohana is on my list now! She's the best female plot twist i ever encounter in anme I'm shock really. Clap to author. But there's 1 more strong female character in 90's that also a baddest. Check fuuko kirisawa if you didn't know her yet, She's quite good. She's the first female character i idolized as a child, she can fight on her own and wins against strong male opponents.
I 100% agree except that Bleach is not my favourite anime.
If you are looking for strong women who are not poorly written go watch Ryougi Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai or Balsa or Fujiko Mine from Lupin III ;))
Dude when I first saw her in bleach I had the mentality that she will slaughter anyone who steps then finding out she was the first kenpachi I was like it make sense now why I got that feeling from her
Ooof.. the MGS3 comparison was dead on and combined the two for some massive feels!! Great work!
All I can’t say, is she’s highly underrated
I have been waiting forever for this analysis!!!!! She was and still is my favorite female character in bleach. Ever since she walked by Kyoraku and Ukitake in the invasion of soul society ark and she let some of her menace out i was entrapped by her and she will always be the waifu of bleach for me
