2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 First Ride

  • We get it. You’re upset. How could Yamaha possibly perform something as sacrilegious as this? The name YZF-R7 belongs to one of the most iconic motorcycles in Yamaha’s history. A 750cc screaming inline-Four that was basically purpose-built for racing, with looks that have stood the test of time, the original R7 is a legend. To put it on this - on this - is simply unforgivable.
    Are we right? Does the description above apply to you? We have news for you: You’re probably not Yamaha’s target audience with the new, 2022 YZF-R7. In fact, the new R7’s target audience were literally babies when Noriyuki Haga was sliding the old R7 all over the world chasing a World Superbike title. That was 20 years ago, people. It’s time to move on. If it weren’t for all the backlash about the name, today’s crop of up-and-coming sportbike riders probably wouldn’t have even known about the original R7.
    Easily the most controversial new model of 2021, the certain uproar over calling it R7 certainly wasn’t lost on the folks from Yamaha when it came time to pick a name. But there’s a method to this madness, and to understand the thought process behind the name is to understand the sportbike world since July of 2008. Watch the video and allow MO's road test editor and resident fast guy Troy Siahaan to explain.

    I really think this R7 was a genius decision from Yamaha. If you're into sport bikes and want to take your bike to a track day you'd either have to take an r3 or an r6. Thats a very big leap and like he stated in the video alot of people wont even use the r6 where its meant to be used in those high rpms. Im hoping this bike is a stepping stone for alot of people. I look forward to picking one up some day.

    The new R7 makes sense for the street and at this price. Anything more would be significantly more expensive, moving it into a different market.
    Of all the people complaining that this is not an R6 or previous R7, how many actually bought one of those. Hint.... it's not many or they wouldnt have discontinued them.

    • @Uninfluenceable
      @Uninfluenceable 3 года назад +8

      R6 was one of the best selling bikes Yamaha has ever sold, they discontinued it because for one they didn't want to spend the money to make it current emission complaint, but mainly because there is a hell of a lot more margin they can make on this new R7 (which uses mostly cheap stamped steel constructions), as compared to the very expensive to manufacture R6 (which is all high end forged aluminum and magnesium components). The R6 was for people that buy sportbikes for the performance, the R7 is for people that buy sportbikes to pull the ladies...

      @@rockafella1690 perhaps that's true in the UK, but in the US the sportbike is still king. The R1 outsells the MT-10 probably 10 to 1. This move from Yamaha is completely profit driven. Even if they sell half as many R7's as R6's, they will make 5x the profit as there is a heck of a lot more margin to be made on the R7 compared to the R6. I'm sure the R7 will sell fine, but it will never achieve the same status as the R6 did. Show up to any track day or canyon ride here in California and you will see more R6's than any other make or model of bike. I doubt that will be true with the R7...

Who wants to ride around at 12,000rpm it’s not really usable in the street which brought me to the r3 for all around fun and it’s a great little bike till you hit open road which I don’t too often but often enough to consider adding this r7. I’ll have to take a test ride to make that decision but I still need to raise the bars an inch at least due to back issues. It’s surprising how much that helps.

    Itbis a beautiful bike with more usable power in the real world. The only thing that I don't like is the way all the wires are infront of the speedash. The dash is covered by wires and looks untidy. It is the same in R3 as well. The looks of thr bike is something that one will get used to with time, that headlight in the center, I guess will take time for some people to get used to...however I am sure it will be a more fun bike.

    I didn't know the history of the "R7" name. The riding ergos & engine combination is what confuses me. I was thinking it'd be like what Aprilia did with the RS660. I had assumed they were going to de-tune the R6 engine? Or possibly beef up the MT-07 engine for this one. Another possibility I was thinking it was going to similar to the Ninja 650R; Sport bike looks but more relaxed ergos & an engine that is versatile for the streets.

    Trizzle you think there is any chance Suzuki follows suit and gives us an SV650S to compete? I like the fact that that engine just likes to rev more, and in demo rides I thought the SV handled a bit better. The only thing that was kinda meh on my SV650 demo ride were the brakes but if they did make a R7 competitor I'd expect them to raid the parts bin for the radial brakes off the GSX-S750, at least I hope.

      @@Uninfluenceable by mantaining the MT line scheme logic, that won't happen, as you have the MT-09 and naturally the MT-10. Also, it wouldn't make sense to remove the R1 because it's a flagship product and at least has a bit of torque down in the revs, so it's not gutless on the street. The R6 was a middleweight bike that was only usable in track because it had nothing at low and mid revs. I actually think the R9 will be the real R6 replacement, because the horsepower is more comparable and it will have way more torque, making it usable on street and on track. I feel what you're saying, but if you want to attract new riders, while making companies money and still making new fun bikes all at the same time, this is the way to go.
