  • Sportbikes are changing, and the bike that's got everyone talking right now is the Yamaha YZF-R7.
    Taking the name straight off the hallowed YZF-R7 OW02 of the late 1990s, the R7 has some very big shoes to fill as it takes over the middleweight sportbike lead from the now-extinct Yamaha YZF-R6.
    Using the award-winning MT-07 as its base, the R7 aims to get more riders into sportbike riding and all for $8999 MSRP in the United States.
    How good is it? Come for a ride and find out.

    in a world of 200hp+ 20k hypersportbikes, this new r7 is a breath of fresh air. Together with the aprilia rs660 they created a whole new kind of middleweight sportsbike and I applaud it. It's all about rideability. Light weight, nimble frame, good brakes and suspension, but without the big horsepower numbers that are only out to kill you. Only downside I can think of is the anemic sound of a paralel twin that puts me off. Cant wait to ride this thing

    It seems like there are a few people here who don't know that there are 650-700 twins racing series that have been experiencing some popularity. Battletwins in UK, MotoAmerica Twins Cup in US. Those series are built on not-track-focused bikes like this one.
    It's a bit of a wonder that Suzuki UK or US haven't figured out a way to offer a track version of the SV since so many people are racing converted Gladii/SVs

    Looks great and great to see effort back in to good engineering and style to keep things simple and affordable. Would love to see some of the European manufacturers trying the same to up everyone's game. They did it with electronics but it has pushed the prices so high. Maybe the next wave of innovation should be back to just enough power for the job, improved engineering, weight reduction and cheaper pricing.

      @@1MrBryn so….for no tangible reason at all. it definitely is rocket surgery my man.It’s average in all categories so…..next “tool of choice for track riding schools the world over” lol. I can’t really tell if you were just making a sort of innocent off the cuff comment or like genuinely feel like that’s just a given now but ….what do you figure the current “tool of choice” is? I assume you heard what he said about the rear suspension being so so but “no big deal because anyone actually serious about tracking this will be throwing that out for a proper suspension setup”.
      Anyway I’m not suggesting it’s a bad bike…just find it irritating Yamaha has muddied the waters so damned much with this bike. It’s literally a MT-07 with r6 forks to stop the front end from being trash out the box anymore, short of a few mostly visual changes the other 99% of the bike is a MT07, including the motor. Reminder: the MT07 exists from a design brief to be a road bike in every way a track bike isn’t. It’s soft, the motor is torquey down low and doesn’t rev out…it’s a blast on the street and that’s by design. Doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it on a track. But it does mean that just as an r6 is out of its elemental the road/with road bikes, the R7 is out of its element on the track/next to r6’s. As Yamaha took great pains to clarify during this event, which makes the choice to debut it for press on a track all the more bewildering. But whatever.
      Only point is this will never be the “tool of choice” for track riding the world over” unless something very sad happens with a plethora of great options that exist before it, and in any case it will work well in there’s options that make much more sense for much less money. I.e. r3/rc390 etc.

      @@Fee.1 “this bike is gonna be really really good for guys and girls that want to get better at sports bike riding but maybe aren’t quite at the level of requiring something like an R6 and certainly not an R1.”
      Now what kind of riders do track riding schools mostly work with?
      Last time I checked it was people who want to get better at sports bike riding but aren’t quite at the level of requiring something like an r6 and certainly not an r1.
      Add in that (like previously mentioned) it’s an inexpensive bike that’s probably a lot cheaper to fix than a liter bike or a 600 supersport and it seems like a pretty logical choice to me.
      Although your point about the rc390 is one I definitely agree with.

    I really thought they were gonna go with a smaller triple or beef up the power to match the RS660. Without the extra power its gonna be a tough fight against the RS in the twins class when racing I think. But that would cost development money and increase the cost so I can see why they went the direction the way they did.
    I recently got a Street Triple R and...wow! What a fantastic motor! Makes plenty of torque and still has quite the top end to it. Seeing that the Daytona is gone there might be an opening for a new 3 cylinder sportbike.

  • @leanit5756
    @leanit5756 2 года назад +1

    I didn't see price as the main problem with sport bikes. I saw the main problem as they simply weren't particularly fun on the street unless you were in an area where the was minimal law enforcement, no game animals to speak of, no brush or tree lines close to the roads obscuring visibility (particularly of animals about to jump out), and roads free of sand, gravel, moss, leaves, pine needles, and water. On roads with all of these challenges like where I live, you just can't "work" a "real" sport bike. I tried.... a couple R6s, a R1, a R1M, a MT10, a GSXR750, a FZ1, etc... They were great fun on track, but on the roads, not so much. Especially the R1. There suspensions just couldn't handle the rough road surfaces in my area. It was like a MMA fight were all the opponent did was continually kick you in the nuts.
    I found my 690 SMC-R way more fun on the road than the sport bikes as it can be absolutely flogged on the road and is a riot. It has a P/W ration of about 9:1 with me on it. A R7 should be pretty much identical. Got one coming now. Hopefully it does have the fun factory on road as the supermoto.

    problem with current 600cc supersports is that there price at almost the same as liter bikes so its hard sell to those wanting to get into track riding and agressive riding why not just pay a little more and go liter bike and the twins 650-700 just doesent have the hardware interms of suspension brakes and riding position to do serious track work until the rs660 came out and carve itself a new segment in the market what we needed was 80-100 hp lightweight supersports with decent and track capable hardware for half the price of a good liter bike that well sell bikes to next generation.

    Sounds like a great road bike to me. We sorely needed more fully faired, affordable, sporty bikes like the Ninja 650 & CBR650R (also Aprilia RS660 and Ducati Supersport, though too expensive for most riders), and this is a fantastic addition. I hope Suzuki, Triumph, BMW, and KTM follow suit - well, now they have to! Throw a full system exhaust on this bike, nice sticky tires, better brake pads if you need, and it will keep up with all the bigger bikes on the road. Well, what more do you need? 😁😂

    • @cyclenews
      @cyclenews  3 года назад +5

      You can't do a lot in terms of chassis, but the motor will need some work to compete with the Aprilia. There's electronics like an AIM dash, new suspension internals, brakes, tires, standard race stuff, really. I'm not sure how hard you can tune the motor before it goes bang, though.

    Few people own motorcycles and even fewer race on a track. This bike is geared towards people who want to drive a bike more often but ride less hard and with a sporty feel. Actually I think a bike like this would get more people riding instead of less. A huge advantage of this bike is the weight is just over 400lbs (power to weight ratio) and not very expensive. A bike that I would rate above this one but similar market is the CBR650, which may be why they didn't do and inline 4 on this bike since there is competition there.

    I've been riding for quite a while but just this year started to get into track riding. Picked up a Ninja 400 to learn the craft with. In doing so i've really started to enjoy passing in the corner and getting passed on the back straight over the raw power. Do you think this bike falls into that category of lightweight cheap to run track bike? For a track bike only it seems like Ninja 400 --> R7 would be logical.

    • @cyclenews

      It'll be a step up from a Ninja 400, for sure, but nothing as intimidating as a proper R6. Plus the size makes it a better option for most riders as the Ninja is a bit cramped for anyone older than a teenager.

    It sounds like an ATV. I feel like people have bought into the marketing hype saying that they need more low end torque for driveability. Who the hell needs more power in traffic and around town than what you get in a 600cc sport bike? It's literally never an issue. You can just about idle to 45 mph in 6-7 seconds in first and second gear. This bike needs an engine that is more audibly pleasing and it would be great.
