Great video. I just bought a 03 Chevy S10 4.3l 4x4. When pulling out from a stop it feels like I'm in a high gear even if I manually shift from 1st gear. I've changed the a-b solenoids and put in a transgo boost valve. It didn't change. The guy I bought it from had the transmission rebuilt 3000 miles ago. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
As a retired ASE Master working at dealers, I was the only XXXX Tech, so never lucky to just do one thing everyday. More tools, everything to fix, diff in the AM, done lamp inop. and finish the day with burn’t exh valve. I want to THANK You! Pointing out issues from captured check balls, case condition, even a Lo-Rev end play thru that little rectangular slot and so much more. Growing up with 2 tv channels, party-line phone on the farm, plus light years from the internet much less smart phones, the world has more to see & learn from. I count you as a service tech my wife could have the car worked on, if I was away. Trust is not given, but is only earned. You have earned my trust and have raised the bar for an auto techs. Many I had The opportunity to hold seminars or in a two day class has taught me that some guys should not own a tool box. Self taught, no tech school and using a 3-Gas analyzer on EFI at a dealer in the late 70’s make you learn real quick. Thanks for your time & this video that you have owned. God bless! Young techs learn! NIASE Master since 78.
Thank you for the kind words. I owe it to guys like you because thats what i grew up around. Guys that did this in their front yards before facebook and google. i want to take the stigma out of what the transmission world has been and pass down the information i was taught from guys like you. we are comming out with weekly videos soon so stay tuned!
Subscribed youngster! After confirming a customers complaint, then during disassembly, whether a carb or transmission, very little gave me pleasure to “Count” the number of problems I found that would exactly cause the problems that created the complaint. This the root-cause. It’s a that moment you know deep down inside the satisfaction of knowing...You Got This One! That’s the reward a good TECH gets! It’s satisfaction. Keep it up as others, not all, will get it. Knowledge & Nads! Sounds like a bands name, but this makes a GOOD Tech happy inside every time.
Watching this video again for probably the 10th time, maybe more! Though I will likely never be known for building a 9 second capable 4l60 I have been building a few for friends and even customers vehicles at the shop I work at. I learn a little more with every build. I have been spending a fairly ridiculous amount of time and money trying to make sure I have covered EVERYTHING I can find to cover regarding 3/4 burn up. I haven’t had a unit come back with a 3/4 issue yet but I still find myself obsessed with the topic! What you have said continuously about the filter and the amount of fluid being utilized during the 3/4 cycle is not falling on deaf ears.
I'm so glad that there are people like you that take the time to show people like me how to fix or diagnose what could be wrong with their own car. Thank you for doing that.
Thank you for your fast response I will be trying to rebuild my first transmission been watching your videos very helpful very knowledgeable always afraid to jump into transmission. They look like it was a lot of stuff to do overwhelming but I do a lot of mechanic work, rebuilt motors, and all that but transmissions were the scariest parts for me, but now watching your videos, just gotta jump in and attack it , so I got one transmission here that third gear and I think second gear or fourth gear I can’t remember slipping so I’m gonna tear that apart and then start from there. Thanks a lot for all your information and your knowledge. God bless.👍🙏🙏
@@guadalupejalomo319 I also used to have a huge fear of opening up a transmission since I was a teenager and I was servicing my dad's car and decided to service the transmission because it was skipping 2nd on occasion so while I was there I thought I would pull the transmission pan and then I thought I would pull the Valve body and when I did that I lost the check balls into the drain pan and what was worse was I really didn't notice that fortunately I didn't dump it out but after I cleaned the sludge from the valve body and the transmission pan I put it all back together and filled it up with fluid and when I tried to back up out of the shop something was wrong because it wouldn't move so I had spent the next few days trying to figure out what was wrong and I was about to give up and face My dad to tell him that I finished off his transmission and head held low I went to dump my bucket that I drained the oil into and I noticed some small ball bearings and I remembered the book mentioned check balls so I gathered them and got the book dropped the pan again and went to work and figured out where they all went and what they all do and I thought something that small makes all of the difference between a failed Job and a successful job because after that service 2nd gear was not skipping anymore and my dad was able to get another couple years out of that transmission and that was where I learned that cleaning the transmission if it gets that dirty does more harm because if i had not washed away more of the clutch material by adding too much pressure at once to the already weak clutches eventually wasted 2nd gear but after that service my dad always bragged about me telling people that I could fix anything and I said no I didn't fix anything I just saved myself having to replace your weak transmission
My Compliments to the Chef! You helped me get through rebuilding one that I cooked. I live in the mountains, had a short deadline and had to do it myself... just tested the rebuild on our steepest hills and it pulled like a champ. Thank You for your time and effort. And yes, the simple 4th gear/reversed piston makes the jump into 4th much stronger!
I appreciate the videos..Not a automatic guy but i watch these videos to learn from ..Just in case i need the information . One thing i learned even if you dont do the work yourself at least you know enough that your getting quality work and parts .. thank
I worked with a builder who worked with Tony Rossi senior and Tony jr. Jerry my friend was on the building of the first transmission brake for the power glide. These guy's would have been in the presence of greatness with you. . I was a road tech for 40 plus year's. No technician school it just came to me. automatic transmissions were always taboo until recently.
I have a 2003 Silverado 4.8,1500,4wd, 4l60e with 320,000. And I tow a 30ft 5th wheel RV trailer and my tranny went out. So I found you very educational, informative, knowledgeable and I enjoyed it very much. I'm calling you for a costume build.
My son has a 2000 ss camaro turboed built, w/ a 4L60E built transmission running in the 8s never has had any issues handling power. He runs with wheelies out 50 feet on launch.
Thank you for sharing, I will be attempting to rebuild a 4l60e, I can pretty much work on anything truck except transmission, and yes I agree the 4l60 is a great transmission, parts availability and price are amazing!!!
I watch your videos, jimmy Williams project 4l60e is cool to for stock and someone who's never touched a gear box. Is cool. I am new to building so you and Jimmy are up there with Richard holdener. You are a natural.
Haven’t even watched this yet… but thank you thank you thank you… was just getting ready to bench build my 4L60e for my 2007’ trailblazer LT 2wd and I can tell this is exactly Wht I’ve been looking for… I hope there’s a part list and Wht I need to order… 👍🏽👍🏽💯💯🔥🔥
This is my first 4l60 it's goin in my 1930.ford it worked.out nice thanks for your help it's my first auto and it went togeather nice thank for your help I've been.watchin goin allot of film I did it myself worked nice
Awesome video, I have built 5 -700r4s ,never had problem but this video so in depth, had it been my first ,this is the video I'd want to have followed. Only thing I had trouble with, and this had been my first rebuild with the 5 double spring clips in top of main forward clutch hub, I could not tell which direction the went .Wasn't hard to figure out so all is good..
Sorry I have to comment again about your build videos you do your builds with the confidence that I like to see when I want to learn something and you are so comfortable with what you are doing and you go into detail over the part of the build that you need to be careful about explaining the build and the areas that are where the failure rate is the most common problem and that is the most helpful because when you are replacing a transmission that you built you need to have the confidence that you don’t have to do it over and over again because the transmission is a part that you have to get it right the first time not like an alternator that just takes a few minutes to replace nothing is worse than installing an engine or transmission and it’ll have to come back out because there’s something not right about it and that’s why I will only install an engine that is either a new engine from a quality builder and the same with a transmission and I almost never install customer supplied parts because I just hate to charge a customer the cost of a job and then the part failed at the start up I want my customer to come in with a broken vehicle and leave with a good running vehicle that will be reliable so that customer has gotten value for their money
You guys are great. I see people talking shit sometimes and I laugh. You guys have one hell of a reputation for being the best. I will buy one for my next wheeler/beater.
I watched this years ago and enjoyed it as much this time as the last. Where can I purchase the special claw hammer for beating in the output shaft, the special air-powered "torque wrench" and the special screwdriver and hammer for aligning the pump. I have 40+ years of experience as a transmission builder, and I rarely run into someone with exemplary skills like yours. In any event, have a great July 4, 2023
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions It's all good my friend ...I never miss a video. I live and breath automatic transmissions. I'm 70 years old and I'm still learning. Have a great evening and thanks for being a good sport
I can’t agree with you more on the filter change I was floored when I first heard about this new service where they flush the fluid and don’t replace the filter and that goes against everything that I was taught about oil filters and pm I have been to trade shows and courses since I was 17 and started working in my uncle’s shop in Anaheim and I was sent to every single class that was offered and it was pounded into my head that changing the old plugged up filter was the most important part of an oil change and you could get by prolonging your service by changing your filter and topping off your oil not a recommendation but under no circumstances do you ever do a service without a filter change and I have always applied that concept to the transmission and mostly because of the fact that a transmission is a very precise and hard working part of your vehicle and the dirt and temperature that it is subject to and also so many times that is the last part of your vehicle that you think about when it gets serviced until it stops working properly and I have replaced transmissions that have never been serviced and there are some transmissions that are equipped with 2 filters and the little spin on filter gets overlooked mostly because when a diy weekend person goes to the auto parts store to pick up the service kit thinking they have everything they need does the service and never even notices the filter being that it’s not painted and looks like a part of the transmission so they just think they have done their transmission a great job and then it’s just not shifting very well and they think they have to replace the transmission and usually by then the cost of replacing the transmission is going to cost more than the vehicle is worth I have bought so many vehicles that have some kind of transmission problem that is easily solved and cost less than the cost of the filter and fluid but I thought that I was the only person who never agreed with the shops that push transmission flushing I usually advise anyone who goes to a shop that recommends a transmission flush to take their vehicle to another shop before they end up wasting money and not having a qualified technician servicing their vehicle
Most of the race car engines I worked on didn't even have a transmission behind them , drive shaft directly to crank and straight to the rear . I am enjoying watching and getting caught up to whats happening in your world .
I like your clean efficient orderly rebuild. I want to rebuild my 4L60 I would like to find a mechanic like you. I don't want to do it myself however I certainly want to know how. I value highly skilled experianced craftsman.
I have a 2008 Sierra with the 4L60E. I'm trying to put together a parts list but most of what I find doesn't include my model year. Are 4L60E parts universal to all years or is there something specific to '08-up?
Awesome video. I have a 2006 Chevy Colorado - calls for trans fluid and filter at 60K miles - my truck has 35k miles on it but is 17 years old. Should I change it or wait until service interval of 60K?
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions wow! Ok! Thanks for the response! Im looking forward to buying a transmission from you one day! People neglect how a good transmission can make a car with an average engine come alive. The 2023 mazda 3 turbo has a great auto trans with long gears!! See if you can find one to drive!!!
@PerformaBuilt Transmissions will that deep filter you noted around 12:30 work in a 1993 4L60 (non E)? It's a one year (last year) only 700R4 but has the 5 pin ROUND weatherpack connector instead of the more common 4 pin for the TCC and 4th gear switch. Does the filter work with aftermarket deep pan such as the Hughes aluminum, or does it require the GTO pan as well? Thanks, great videos!!
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissionsok thanks for replying. I was asking because on the GTO parts lookup which is what I thought you said was the application for that deep filter, they also list the GTO as having a deep pan as well for the stock trans. If you're selling a deep filter that only works with your units then I guess I misunderstood. Appreciate the videos, super informative 👍
What do you think about the sonnax pump spring? It replaces the 2 with one and using a .500 boost valve and transgo pressure regulator valve. Also you use scarf cut on stator alot? A few people were telling me not to I was going to but then used the solid because I wasn't sure. I used smart shell too I seen it on your other vid and took your advice thanks good videos keep em coming.
I dont care for alot of sonnax parts esp that spring. If you have a good flat pump that is true a stock spring will do the job perfectly. The stiff pump spring is for compensating for a non flat pump and keeps the slide locked. t go press reg valve spring will increase your low end pressure too high at part throttle but the 500 boost valve is a good part to throw in. Id stay away from trans go at all costs, ive thrown away time and time again those harsh shift parts out of cores and competitor units. Scarf cuts seal better than solid because they can expand with the wear over time and seal much better due to the design esp when installing a Tbrake. Solid rings dont expand and once some wear forms they lose their sealing property very fast. The reverse drum is one of the fastest spinning peices in the trans so it really takes a toll on those rings eventually. Plus not all parts are created equal or are the same dimensions so thats another reason i like scarf cuts to compensate for any machining error new or used.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions so which boost valve should I use? And so I should go with the oe 4l60e or 70 springs I used their iso converter valve that was in the SK kit if you have had any bad experiences with any of that I would like to hear about it thanks I also drilled all the seperator plate holes as they instructed transmission still isn't installed yet so I can go back and change some things easily if I need to.
Dont drill large holes for your seperator and use anyboost valve .490 to .500.. changing springs for converter valve isnt going to make a difference. The 70 and 60 are literally the same in function and design. The 70 isnt better than the 60, common misconception
I really appreciate your video. I really understand now what it takes to rebuild a transmission. I have a 4L60E transmission and I was wondering should you do a whole flush on a transmission or just change out the transmission oil in the pan and filter 2011 Chevy Townhall, LT with a 5.3 4 x 4 have 160,000 miles on it transmission looks little brown not too bad what would be the best thing to do Thanks in advance
Hi Ryan. Where are you in the USA? If I hit the lottery I may want to buy a transmission from you one day and I think you should say where your shop is early in the video productions. Thank you very much for the outstanding video production to help people like me. I'm 65 years old and I love to learn about the 4L60E. I agree with the aftermarket improvements (Sonnax or Transgo or others) and a well crafted careful repair or rebuild, the 4L60E is a fine well engineered transmission. You may have talked more about the 3rd accumulator check ball capsule leaking and burning up the 3/4 clutch pack later in the video, but I suggest you edit at 2:44 minutes in your video production to add a bit more emphasis with details to explain the 3rd accumulator check ball capsule leaking into the case issue and how to test and if bad resolve it or say I will talk about this more on another video or later in this video. I have seen videos by other producers that say "must check" using 50% transmission fluid with 50% mineral spirts to see if check ball leaks into case as you said will burn the 3/4 clutch pack right off the bat after a rebuild if leaking. I have seen several posts where a do it yourself person will do a full rebuild without testing and replacement of the capsule and I think it is important enough an issue to deserve an edit. And at 29:23 I can't see what you are doing so another edit please so I can see. I appreciate your efforts Ryan and wish you the best.
Thanks for the kind words but i do a lot of preinstall bushings and such in the Case prior to the video as it would take entirely too long to do that and not have a 5 hour video among other things including said checkball and capsule (which tbh hardly fails, the 3rd clutch has much bigger issues). Secondly my videos arent for the novice, just a helpful guide on building to moderate power. If most are starting out fresh they may want to try Transmission Bench and other more indepth videos on just the basics. Ill try to keep your suggestions in mind for future videos. We are located in Bloomsburg PA
PerformaBuilt Transmissions I understand your point. My video productions about restoration of old vans and fiberglass boats I lack skills and opportunity to edit once completed. Thanks for your work.
I'm sorry to bother you with such a basic question. I have a 1991 GMC Sonoma with the 4.3L engine. I believe it has the 4L60 transmission but I'm not positive. It has 240,000 miles and I'm not sure if the transmission fluid has ever been changed. My question is, can I change the fluid with Dexron VI synthetic ATF? Thank you in advance.
Do you guys ever use the 4l79 drum? I like the idea of using the much larger th350 clutches and the elimination of the 3/4 snap ring with the screw on ring......?
We offer it but our builds with the sonnax drum have exceeded 1400whp with no failures so we dont see the need. The 4L79 drum is Available as an add on on our website at www.performabuilt.com
Rightfully so you talk about maintenance on these Transmissions. Could you please do a video as such? I know it is just a drop pan change filter but seen so many different methods and wanted your take on the correct way. A video says a 1000 words. Thank you.
If I haven't serviced it and I drive it regular now I cranked it up and drove now now it's not going 3rd to 4th. I'm going to have to rebuild and this looks like a good idea to go big on it. Tryna to drop a 6.0.
Im curious about the input drum selective washer and why you flip the bearing. I recently built my first 4l60E and have a #68 washer and put bearing in according to spec. I have .045 input shaft endplay. I feel is a bit excessive. Im wanna tighten it up a bit. I have the sonnax input housing and sunshell and sonnax red band. I didnt check the endplay before teardown. Is .045 too much endplay?
.045 is fine.. Endplay isnt super critical with the 4L60 series at all. Many specs you will read about in any atsg book are irrelivant to operation and performance. Flipping the bearing actually makes it work how gm originally intended as the way they have put it in oem with that amount of clearance makes it have 0 contact with any component. Flipping our way makes it ride correctly on the washer and stator while giving i constant lube from the blind bleed in the input drum.
great vid, how did you get the pumps out that werent lined up and stuck in there? My pump is wedged in, waiting on a pump puller tool but I'm scared even that won't do it. Is my pump gonna be broken from forcing it out?
it wont break, just be careful and a good pry bar that has a sharp point will help you work it up out of there side to side depending on how hard it went in there and how misaligned it is. Its more of a technique to get them out rather than the tool
You were saying how you can really tell about 3-4 endplay something about the load release springs are they supposed to be held down from top apply plate? And what do you think about the alto reverse input drum saver wave spring instead of the Belleville plate?
The springs will be sandwiched between apply plates and "float" in the drum. They are essential. As far as the wave plate ive never used one and have no experience with it. Stock setup works perfectly fine and always has
I hear you mention the accumulator check ball, i bought the superior 3rd accumulator directional valve for my new build. What do you think of those? Should i use a new GM check ball or the directional valve?
So once again, I am a Master L1 certified tech with 30 years of professional experience. I am an amateur transmission builder and not personally interested in racing (I enjoy watching and don’t have anything against racing it’s just not something I spend money and time on) and I appreciate your video and that you are sharing your experience. I wondered why you are using the scarf cut seals on the stator? Just a question, not trolling at all!
yes i do, i feel they seal better than the solid rings. On the input shaft however i prefer solid rings over scarf because the scarf cut tends to wear into the stator more over time.
1st question, how do you feel about additional filtration being added to the cooler line circuit (( such as a Transdapt pt# 1255) and yes I know the filter inside the pan needs periodic replacement as well) ? Question #2 ( I am pretty certain I know the basic answer to this ) Do you like seeing pans with additional fluid capacity to them ( such as the B&M part#70260 ) ? I know that pan specifically might be a tough fit in a race car but in my 4x4 I have plenty of clearance. Thanks
I feel addtional filtration is great but the trade off is the more filtration or coolers run the more restriction of flow. it would have to be a very badass secondary sytem but not the primary like the main trans filter in the pan. It is Very very critical to replace the Pan filter during every single service. and deep is great if you can fit it but it doesn't pose a big difference like a large cooler would. Deep pans are more aesthetic than anything over function.
One more question.. on the late model harness the lockup solenoid is black (on early, it is tan, with a slot for the screen filter t-shape). In the rebuild kit is a conical screen filter. Is this filter to be used in the late lockup solenoid snout, which has no slot for the t-shaped filter? Thanks, again, in advance.
Its really not essential. The after market tcc doesnt use a filter at all and has a higher flow rate. Black is also after market. Only stock tcc uses a filter.
Nice clean work area just like the race engine shop I worked in .Lots of great info . Is the valve body plate reusable or does it need replaced when you have to remove valve body from case ? This is for a daily driver .
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Oh boy did i find a problem in the 1 to 2 accumulator .I can see where the outer spring was cocking and wearing away the housing . Is there a better replacement for casting #8684428-15 . This is a 1994 s-10 2 wd 4.3 tbi with the 4l60e trans . The trans was serviced at regularly by a dealer .
Great information and it was interesting to watch! I am curious though, how much hp will a level 2 hold in a 4,300~ pound vehicle for daily driving/street racing?
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions thank you, I appreciate the quick response! Also i noticed in the video that it was stated to leave the pressure table stock when tuning because of the upgraded pump. Does that apply to the stage 2 as well?
I think They are great and we used to use them a long time ago. All the units ive had back for restores and warranty from over 10 years ago have had a near perfect Zpak. Now we have chosen regular style frictions and steels for more exact clearances but throughout the entire time of use we have never had an issue with the good ol Z pak
I'm going to be getting into do GM transmissions good Transmission shops are getting scarres around me all the pros say just take it to a professional but even the prs HD to start somewhere 😎
I was under the impression that when using the wide band it is best to just use a new drum. Not a challenge to you( I’m an amateur ) just a question basically.
Remove all parts and plug the hole. Firms 4th while providing fluid to rear train in all gears not just 4th. Dont read too deep into it. Very basic mod
Idk if you go back and answer questions I see This video is a few years old. I had a question about lock up converters I’m going with a build up of a 60 on a f body I’m not to concerned about fuel economy but would a 3500 lock up help keep trans temps down on long trips or would it heat the trans up or zero effect. Thanks
As long as your cam and weight and rear ratio all add up to a 3500 itll be great. If those things arent up to par you will build excessive heat and lose a ton of bottom end torque. If its too low of a stall speed the vehicle will try to push through the brakes and youll lose top end
Fluid and filter change after 1000 miles of driving to eliminate inital clutch apply debris and thats it. There isnt rly such a thing as a break in period for automatic transmissions.
they need extensive work to be as good. keep in mind they are new and problematic whereas the 4L series is 30 yrs old and basically solved at this point. The industry is always 10 yrs behind to fix all the oem problems and it will be a long time until the 8L and 10L catch on like the 4L
Thank for the show. I wanted to know when changing the filter do you to change the pick-up sump gasket too. Every time you change the filter? Part number Wix 58847
24:42 Does the 5-pinion front planet take a different bearing ID to the Reaction Carrier Shaft just behind the front planet, than the bearing on the 4-pinion planet? TIA
Not rly but theres are 2 kinds for 4 and 5 pins. There are early models and late models of both. Early takes the standard bearing and late takes a bearing with a cup to hold it in place.
Thanks so much, these videos are very helpful!! I have a question, I just pulled my 2003 4L65E down and found it had broken the input drum....all the lugs that hold the snap rings in for the forward clutch as well as the 3/4 pack were broke off. I don't know what caused it. Too much pressure somehow?
bad snap ring placement with the openings half on a lug or between the group lugs is the most common or yes severe pressure but hard shifts should come with that
First of all, thank you for the video. LOTS of good information. I'm looking for some wisdom on my first 4l60e performance build and I've compiled some questions. Don't want to kill your video with a paragraph though. Is there an email I can reach you at to send a detailed message?
Hello good sir! I gotta rebuild my 4l60 think I broke the sun shell haven’t dug into it yet with my uncle. What’s the best rebuild kit u think for power because eventually I want to make power my 5.3 has decent power I’d say pushing 375. Anyway I was gonna go with the ss mega monster in a box from monster transmission it’s about 1,200 but to get it to me and including tax and everything 1,600 u think I should go with that kit or could I find some kit just as good for less didn’t know bc I can’t find any other good looking kits. Thanks man have a good Monday night.
We dont sell parts or kits. Our parts are unique and machined in house not for sale. Id recommend our level 2 4l60e trans if you dont have goof luck with whats out there.
Can I buy just a full rebuild kit for a 2011 4L60E from y'all if I am doing the rebuild myself? And will it come complete with all the new electronic solenoids and wiring harness? Don't need the torque converter and my truck will not be over 500RWHP.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions well I'm a mechanic but I've never rebuilt an automatic transmission so I was looking into doing it myself. I've got an '08 trailblazer transmission went out of it or the pump went out of it and somebody gave me a two-wheel drive transmission that's good but I have to switch out the output shafts. So I figured what the heck if I'm in there I might as well rebuild it! And I've watched video after video after video some people say to soak your clutches which I'm sure doesn't hurt anything just maybe not a necessary step. Some people say it's not necessary so I was just curious as why you don't do it. 😁
If I’m not mistaken the 2005 corvette 4L65E has the 5 pinion planetary gears which is 3.06 - 1.55. If a customer orders a level 2 transmission which comes with the 4 pinion will you guys re use the 5 pinion if it standard in the customers stock transmission?
I worked for 20+ years in a transmission shop as the R&R tech. In those 20+ years I saw builders at 3 differerent shops drill tiny holes in customers transmission cases to ruin the case and f*ck the next builder and shop. Is their any way to check for this before starting to rebuild the Transmission.
I have a 2 piece 4L60E from a 98 V6 Camaro wih 100k on it. I like the work that you guys do and all of the vids you post. I'm thinking of reusing this trans with a Twin Turbo 6L V8(I don't know if it'll pair well with whatever block I get) and am planning for around 700hp boosted. I'm mechanically inclined, but I have never dug into an automatic trans and I really have the itch to DIY this one as my first. I know you guys sell transmissions, but is there a parts list available for me to attempt to DIY this myself? I don't care if fails after I build it and wouldn't hold anyone liable besides myself. I just want to add the experience to my life while I'm here. Thanks
All of our build specs and parts can be viewed at www.performabuilt.com , we dont list our hydraulic mods because that is what makes us unique but any good name brand shift kit i.e Transgo or Sonnax or Superior will net you good results as long as you dont set it up too hard. Always remember hard shifts are not performance and the all 4l60Es prior to 1997 and especially with the v6 style will not bolt up to your 6.0. You will need a 2 piece core from 1998-2005 with the correct LS Bell and 300mm input shaft and pump stator to match. Any core 1998-2005 will have what you need. Best of Luck!!! Its alot of fun!!
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Thank You for the reply. I have a 98 2 piece. I've read that at least the bell housing will bolt up, but the two pieces from 96-99 have a 298mm input shaft. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it this summer. Thanks again. Love your vids here.

I try to tell it how i myself started to understand it. Just take your time and be detailed!
Your Welcome
Thank you for your fast response
I will be trying to rebuild my first transmission been watching your videos very helpful very knowledgeable always afraid to jump into transmission.
This makes my job worth it. Im so happy to hear that!
I appreciate the videos..Not a automatic guy but i watch these videos to learn from ..Just in case i need the information . One thing i learned even if you dont do the work yourself at least you know enough that your getting quality work and parts .. thank
Just listening to you talk about this stuff. Super knowledgeable and your humor is amazing. Keep it going!
I was able to take my transmission apart and fix it thanks to this video! Saved myself 2-4000$!!! Thanks Buddy!
I hope your first transmission experience was a great one! Its not so bad after all lol!
I felt great (like top of the world)
after first successful rebuild.!!! 🍻 Cheers.
Your dry humour (you can't get rid of them) gave me a little smile inside right off the bat, so I was determined to watch whole vid,
A little humor makes everything better
Always very in depth explanation. Great information.
Thank you!
This is my first 4l60 it's goin in my 1930.ford it worked.out nice thanks for your help it's my first auto and it went togeather nice thank for your help I've been.watchin goin allot of film I did it myself worked nice
Your very welcome
You make this built so informative and so comfortable thx for the knowledge looking forward on your videos
I appreciate that!
I know cameras are expensive, but I’d love to see you build the internals on all of it. Enjoying the channel. Tks for sharing.
I followed your advice and changed fluid and filter and made a simple 1 to 2 accumulator repair and and my 4L60E works great .
Fantastic video, very profesional and informative with lots of very important information
Im glad!
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions It's all good my friend ...I never miss a video. I live and breath automatic transmissions. I'm 70 years old and I'm still learning. Have a great evening and thanks for being a good sport
thought you were gonna drop the o ring at 1:18:10, thanks so much for this information, ill be watching a million times and subscribing 💯
Yeah but the separator plates have screens. And gets beat up by check ball
Thank you for sharing your knowledge brother.
An amber alert went off on my phone, 2 minutes before you mentioned one in this vid. Crazy
I appreciate the tutorial! Thank you for taking the time to this!
Your welcome!
First shop I worked at we would put the balls on the plate first after the gasket. Transgo and superior was the shift kits.
Thankyou just watched this as I have just stripped one of these as practice for when I overhaul my Montero automatic. I learned a lot from your vid.
Most of the race car engines I worked on didn't even have a transmission behind them , drive shaft directly to crank and straight to the rear . I am enjoying watching and getting caught up to whats happening in your world .
Thanks Sir I appreciate your time in making very good Video Thanks again Sir
Hi, I saw some of your videos and the explanations and knowledge tell me(I'm a mechanical eng.) that I will let you do the job on mine !!
I like your clean efficient orderly rebuild. I want to rebuild my 4L60 I would like to find a mechanic like you. I don't want to do it myself however I certainly want to know how. I value highly skilled experianced craftsman.
Good job like your in depth talking about detail Thanks
I have a 2008 Sierra with the 4L60E. I'm trying to put together a parts list but most of what I find doesn't include my model year. Are 4L60E parts universal to all years or is there something specific to '08-up?
Some 08 parts are specific
Great video
Outstanding lesson
I like to add a spin on hydraulic filter in the cooling circuit. tell me how you feel about that idea. Please.
Awesome video. I have a 2006 Chevy Colorado - calls for trans fluid and filter at 60K miles - my truck has 35k miles on it but is 17 years old. Should I change it or wait until service interval of 60K?
Never follow the service interval. I suggest every 30k for normal driving. And sooner if racing or being hard on it.
Awesome video very useful knowledge thanks for your time and help
@PerformaBuilt Transmissions will that deep filter you noted around 12:30 work in a 1993 4L60 (non E)? It's a one year (last year) only 700R4 but has the 5 pin ROUND weatherpack connector instead of the more common 4 pin for the TCC and 4th gear switch. Does the filter work with aftermarket deep pan such as the Hughes aluminum, or does it require the GTO pan as well? Thanks, great videos!!
This is only for our product. not stock or another builders unit. Hughes will have better information about their product than i.
It is a gto filter and pan. We just put it on every unit including 700R4s with modification.
What do think of Performance Transmission of Amarillo Texas

@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions largest size I went to was .93 not wanting to go too big thanks for the comments back.
I really appreciate your video. I really understand now what it takes to rebuild a transmission. I have a 4L60E transmission and I was wondering should you do a whole flush on a transmission or just change out the transmission oil in the pan and filter
2011 Chevy Townhall, LT with a 5.3 4 x 4 have 160,000 miles on it transmission looks little brown not too bad what would be the best thing to do
Thanks in advance
2011 Chevy Tahoe, LT 4 x 4 with a 5.3 with 160,000 miles
Never flush a trans thats older. Just fluid and fill
91 would be a 700R4 and yes you can change it with that fluid.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions I appreciate the info. Now I know what kind of transmission my truck has. Great ! ! Big Thanks ! !
Great Job if everything goes good for me in a few months im gonna be buying stage 2 or 3 700r4 for my c10 fingers crossed
Rightfully so you talk about maintenance on these Transmissions. Could you please do a video as such? I know it is just a drop pan change filter but seen so many different methods and wanted your take on the correct way. A video says a 1000 words. Thank you.
There is a recent video on fill procedure on a fresh install but i definitely can do a filter and fluid change in the near future
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions your transmission build videos are second to none. Thanks so much
If I haven't serviced it and I drive it regular now I cranked it up and drove now now it's not going 3rd to 4th. I'm going to have to rebuild and this looks like a good idea to go big on it. Tryna to drop a 6.0.
Gotta keep up with the service or youll never keep a trans
I'm new to the ls scene and gm as well. So which 4l60 has the 5 pinion planet? Or which series do you recommend for a 900+(goal) build? Thanks.
The black edition you can veiw on our website at Www.performabuilt.com
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions thanks for the info.
great vid, how did you get the pumps out that werent lined up and stuck in there?
Stock setup works perfectly fine and always has
@1:23:05 he says doodoo hah! great video ill probably be sending my c5 core to you guys
I hear you mention the accumulator check ball, i bought the superior 3rd accumulator directional valve for my new build. What do you think of those? Should i use a new GM check ball or the directional valve?
I personally just use the oem one. I dont see a issue with an aftermarket one as long as it functions as it should
@PerformaBuilt Transmissions Thanks for the response. You guys are the real MVP
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions The deep pan i referenced, claims to add 3 additional quarts to the system.
still not near as important as a large cooler
Its reusable if its in good condition
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Oh boy did i find a problem in the 1 to 2 accumulator .I can see where the outer spring was cocking and wearing away the housing . Is there a better replacement for casting #8684428-15 . This is a 1994 s-10 2 wd 4.3 tbi with the 4l60e trans . The trans was serviced at regularly by a dealer .
thanks for reminder to flat sand
Great information and it was interesting to watch! I am curious though, how much hp will a level 2 hold in a 4,300~ pound vehicle for daily driving/street racing?
about 600 to 650 not quite 700. Our ratings are based on a typical 3600 to 3800 lb car
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions thank you, I appreciate the quick response! Also i noticed in the video that it was stated to leave the pressure table stock when tuning because of the upgraded pump. Does that apply to the stage 2 as well?
ALLLLL Stages and transmissions MUST be stock line with our builds
Good vid very informative
Just curious. What do you think about the 14 one sided frictions in the raybestos z-pack?
I think They are great and we used to use them a long time ago. All the units ive had back for restores and warranty from over 10 years ago have had a near perfect Zpak. Now we have chosen regular style frictions and steels for more exact clearances but throughout the entire time of use we have never had an issue with the good ol Z pak
What thickness are the 3/4 frictions and steel and 2 thicker plates ?
Chevy S-10 zr2 4wd, slipping in and out of 3ed and 4th. Want to do a 2wd manual conversion. Mostly because gas is pushing 4 dollars a gallon.
I'm going to be getting into do GM transmissions good Transmission shops are getting scarres around me all the pros say just take it to a professional but even the prs HD to start somewhere 😎
what/where is this .020 clearance you're speaking of? is that clearance between the clutches and case?
No its the 3rd clutch in input drum. The low reverse pack is the only one in the case and it doesnt matter much unless your building in a trans brake.
I was under the impression that when using the wide band it is best to just use a new drum. Not a challenge to you( I’m an amateur ) just a question basically.
Yes and in this video it is a new reverse input drum which i also talk about
can u go into a little more detail about plugging and leaving out piston under valve body?
Remove all parts and plug the hole. Firms 4th while providing fluid to rear train in all gears not just 4th. Dont read too deep into it. Very basic mod
Great video. Wish you had a camera looking in the case as you did the video would have been great.
The other camera fell off and broke at the time
Do you rebuild and/or modify and allison 1000-2000 transmissions?
i do not
Idk if you go back and answer questions I see This video is a few years old.
What brake in do you recommend for a home stock rebuilt 4l60e
Fluid and filter change after 1000 miles of driving to eliminate inital clutch apply debris and thats it. There isnt rly such a thing as a break in period for automatic transmissions.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions thanks. This is the first one I've done and want to get it right
How are the newer 10L80e and 8L80/90e transmissions compared to 4L60e and 6L80e?
they need extensive work to be as good. keep in mind they are new and problematic whereas the 4L series is 30 yrs old and basically solved at this point. The industry is always 10 yrs behind to fix all the oem problems and it will be a long time until the 8L and 10L catch on like the 4L
Thank for the show. I wanted to know when changing the filter do you to change the pick-up sump gasket too. Every time you change the filter? Part number Wix 58847
those seals should come with every oem filter
Too much pressure somehow?
bad snap ring placement with the openings half on a lug or between the group lugs is the most common or yes severe pressure but hard shifts should come with that
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Thanks for the reply! There was never any hard shifting...trans always shifted perfect....until the instant it didn't : (
First of all, thank you for the video. LOTS of good information. I'm looking for some wisdom on my first 4l60e performance build and I've compiled some questions. Don't want to kill your video with a paragraph though. Is there an email I can reach you at to send a detailed message?

I'm almost done with my 4l60. I haven't put my valve body on but the endplay on the input shaft is none at all. It turns but will not budge at all.
Does it turn very easily?
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions not really. I can turn it by the output shaft easily but almost have to use pliers to turn the input shaft
Stop quick. Either the plastic washer tangs are squashed under the pump or you still have a clutch to drop on reverse input or 3rd clutch
If the clutches are soaked in oil on rebuild there will be resistance also but you shouldnt need pliers
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions yes the clutches are all wet with atf
We do not sell parts or kits period
@Perfomabuilt
Where is your post on Torque converter Spacing? Can’t seem to find it

Is there a particular reason you don't soak your clutches etc in trans fluid before installation?
Its an old myth. Fluid pumps at 60 to 200 psi so fast in these that the clutches get soaked almost instantly. Soaking is just boomer rumors.
Either way wouldnt hurt at all. Soak away if youd like.
If you provide your core and it has 5 pinions then we put them back in your new level 2.
I have a 2001 GMC Sierra regular cab with a 5.3 will this work for it? Might sound like a dumb question but just curious, thank you.
Yes
do you silicone your pump bolts
I use o rings. Silicone should never be used on transmissions, only engines
I love You.

Do you need to get closer to your work and the components that you’re working on so we can see some of that good work👍👍👍👍👍
at this time we dont have the cameras or the software.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions how much v
I worked for 20+ years in a transmission shop as the R&R tech. In those 20+ years I saw builders at 3 differerent shops drill tiny holes in customers transmission cases to ruin the case and f*ck the next builder and shop. Is their any way to check for this before starting to rebuild the Transmission.
Ive never encountered it but i dont think theres any real good way without a good once over and a flashlight
So....what does it cost for me to come and learn alongside?
im tempted
