I have no idea what this guy is doing, but I can tell he’s “doing it right”. Wow.
Oh he definitely knows his shit. I built them myself
Ya their no joke. Proper work right there. Just wish i lived closer. Hard to find guys that are reliable that u can trust.
I could do that, but it might take me until ...never.
he's like the mary poppins of car parts... just keeps pulling more and more and more parts out... and endless stream of parts... and just when you think he's done pulling parts out... he pulls 200 more parts out...
Reminds me of the time my friend got to chauffeur Ray Charles.
Ray said he was going the wrong way.
my wife's a nurse, she said your more detailed than most surgeons.
My wife's a RN with BSN n PA n she said most doctors that work at hospitals do not diagnose the sick as detailed as U do a troubled trans
@C Gau
Surgeons have it easy, they get to bury their mistakes...
@@22099dscott LMAO
What hospital does your wife work at .... just so I know if I’m in the area to perform surgery on myself
@@22099dscott Most people don't talk about it, but supposedly 250,000 people a year die from medical mistakes. Compared to 38,000 that die on the roads. Or 368 that are murdered with rifles or all sorts of things people think kill way more people but don't than medical mistakes.
I love the fact that you give the reasons "why" you must do it a certain way, and what will happen if you don't do it this way. SIgn of a good teacher.
./
Plenty of assholes that cut corners or just dumb.. but their rep shows it too..
You also have trent going full forward being a duck.. the teacher has much patience on him too
54 minutes to do what would take me a week! I do not know how U-tube recommended this video, but skills like this are a pleasure to watch!
An unfathomable depth of knowledge that can only be ascertained by years of practical experience. Very impressive.
Paul Wilson college kids have the knowledge and science behind , but old men have the technical experience to do the job ,
Viages 7693 most college kids have the book smarts but lack the hands on experience
Paul Wilson
Isn’t that the disgusting truth . It’s pathetic . That’s why he works for his self . I’m glad for him .
I'm an engineer and watching verrry carefully. I see how subassemblies are done, but some of the issues with clearance and shimming I get, others I'm lost. He's got the unique combination of speed and detail. He's a freaking master. I'm very impressed as well.
@@williamdavis3128 I've hired a few interns from a local Quaker University w/ an Engineering program and they have been unmatched for hands on AND smarts. There's hope out there after all! I promise you that.
I am blown away by the casual certainty that this man has.
Wish i had half his confidence
that's experience talking. he's done the mistakes .. learned from them and passes on the knowledge. we call these people professionals.
truly impressive..
He puts something in and seconds later can put another thing in because he’s done it so many times. Crazy.
Detailed knowledge and plenty of practice. Amazing results.
As a gearhead, I really enjoy watching a pro on top of his game. Where is Mike Rowe? He needs to get to Amarillo and visit this shop. This is the stuff America is made of.
I liked than unliked to leave it at 69
Mike Rowe was always a rich well off man who like to play "blue collar" but never had to work an actual day in his life
@@ststst981 Sounds like you are an expert on not working.
@@ststst981 Well, actually, he was an opera-singer, then a failed QVC host. I don't think he was rich early on.

I would ship my transmission across the ocean to have Precision Transmission work on it - Great job done
It's unfortunate that they don't do carryouts, but it's for good reason.
Somewhere in this world, there is a design engineer weeping with joy at the care and attention this man shows.
Or growling because he's in there muckin with shifts and the like. :-) (Kidding, BTW, and I AM an engineer, electrical though). Probably actually not thrilled when he shows obvious marginal designs like clutch baskets that need braces, so to speak. I can flat out tell you that stuff like that is not remotely always the engineer's fault, though, but it is sometimes. Usually bean counters.
nah mate . he’s an engineer ! he be still drooling in a bucket while repeating !

I started watching his videos so I could rebuild my own transmission. Now I watch them as reminders that I have no business messing with it, and I have no interest in anybody working on it but Precision Transmission in Amarillo. And I live in Nashville. With 250,000 on my factory transmission, it won't be long now.
Dude has forgotten more about transmissions that I will ever know. Legend.
When I grow up I wanna be a transmission mechanic... wait, I'm 60 years old.😕
Not a good idea to learn a new job like this in these changing times . The green guys are about to ruin the automotive industrie. There still will be some automatic transmissions around in the future but there will also be a rebuild industrie (small shops like these ) around there will be not enough work for all of them. I am 58 living in Germany and boy i tell you the good times are gone.Green Party will run this Country to the ground ....real quick !!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes i think i am lucky to be 58 cause i had a rich life ,Family and a good job at the FORD Motor Company´s development centre here in Cologne. Life will be much more expencive due all these new Co2 tax shit that helps nobody but the covernment to colect more money to spend it for stupid people...................
Maybe I'm just hungry, but I'm hearin "Ya set your bun down just like this and center your beef patty over it just like this, ok? Now your onion ring centers over it just like that, now your tomato slice goes over the top, and the pickle slices arrange around the center like so. Make sure you lube it up good with your ketchup and mayo, and get the top bun to set right there on top with the proper clearance see?"
I'm 62. I know all about the chemical cleaner induced "shakes" brother. That stuff almost got me. Anytime a man has to work in any chemicals this can happen. A 40 year service tech knows what I'm talking about. There's no way you can wear gloves of any kind and do this job. You have to feel your way thru the assembly. If c.i. neuropathy hasn't damaged the hands. (Starts at the fingertips) chemicals and metal powder ingestion (heavy metals) are hard on the nerves. Literally.
Stay well brother! Your one of the best I've ever seen. Seniority has its perks.
Folks if you need one done go see this man.
Fuck if ben doing heavy Automotive work 4 years and I shake sometimes and had no clue or even thought the chemicals and oils would give me the shakes wow you learn something new everyday
Are you talking about Magnus!?,Safety clean delivered that crap to my shop,That is an EVIL CHEMICAL,My back gone, hearing, lungs from being a tr builder!.
Heavy metal poisoning is very serious, zinc is everywhere in the repair business.
I thought he did an excellent job on the trans build. What do you guys think?
@randall Tufts, I was about to ask about the gloves thing. Now I understand why you simply cannot execute this with gloves on
This the the third time I fell down the “transmission porn” rabbit hole. Will have to sign up for a 12 step program fur sure.....😉
Wouldn't that be a 12-gear program? :)
I love the reverence the son has for his father. Nice to see that he respects and wants to carry on his father's amazing craft.
Him simply saying "Yes sir" just shows the respect. This is a rarity these days.
@@markcollard9326 Are you from the North? The "Yes Sir" thing is much more common down south than it is up in the North.. 🤷🏻
This guy knows his stuff. Not a manual in sight, it’s all done from memory and experience.

Some folks are put on this earth to play sports, some to play guitar and sing, and some to build transmissions. Always a joy for me to watch somebody doing what they are meant to do.
I highly doubt there is another person that knows more than this guy about transmission
i didnt realize until this video that it was a father and son. you guys make great content.
I think I can speak for most of us. Thank you guys for all your patience and precision education. We love watching your videos. I’m a young 24 year old from Oklahoma and I want to learn how to build. Every time I watch y’all’s videos I get that much more inspired. Please keep going and thank you so much!

Brother. Learn as much as you can from your dad. My deepest regret is that I didn't learn much from my dad before he passed. He was one of the three guys that wrote the ASE certification program. He was a master mechanic and passed down a bunch of those tools and I have absolutely no idea what they are for and how to use them.
I'm a DIY guy. I just love watch an artist at work. If I needed a rebuild transmission. I now know where to order one and have it shipped to New Jersey and know what I'm getting is better then new.
This is the guy where you just drop it off and say call me when it's done. No questions asked.
totally lmfao so true
After watching you dismantle locked-up things, watching stuff spin is a bit of joy.
As a transmission builder, I really enjoy your videos. You do put a lot of info in just the teardown vids, you do great work and that's rare these days. Much respect cause I have tried to make videos while building and it is difficult.
Well said.
It's a joy to observe a skilled tradesman practicing his craft.
I'm more into hobby machining, although have done a little shade tree wrenching. Love watching someone with so much knowledge to share. I know enough to stay out of transmissions lol.
I rebuilt a 4l80 on the side of the road with a flathead screwdriver 4 wrenches and 3 sockets. Not that hard

I remember being told many years ago about how intricate and complex auto-transmissions were and my naive response was-c'mon how hard can it be ? well, extremely hard as it happens, you'll never learn this on a couple of years at college, this requires a high level of knowledge, focus and dedication to detail and the main thing LOVE of the job,i.e. you'll NEVER be a professional golfer if you don't LOVE golf to start with.
“Just like that” I enjoyed 50+ minutes of a man assembling a transmission
His son (the cameraman) commented that it's the fastest he's done, too
Me seeing the video title: "oh cool I should have this in case I need to rebuild a transmission"
Me 2 min in: "yea I'll pay for a professional"
And this is a simple one
Richard knows transmissions backwards and forwards, an expert for sure.
"The touch of the masters hand" is the only statment that says it best.
Very good craftsmanship being done on this rebuild. Straight forward information on how and why. Credit to the videoing and editing of the video also.
Have a great day.
God Bless.
Love to see a master at his work
I like how he wipes down his work area like a professional chef. It shows someone who not only cares about his work but about the equipment he uses.
As a former builder turned nurse. I'm proud to see this guy doing it right.
I have not a clue how to do this, but after ten videos I swear I could actually do one. Teacher is badass
Best mechanic on the internet, love watching this
That was a great video thank you big time. Keep up the great work a lot of people appreciate it.
It's amazing how all the little stuff makes the biggest difference
Finally a REAL Mechanic that doesn't wear gloves while working!! A very detailed and well done video too! Your knowledge and skill are greatly appreciated! 😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍
I would have loved to have had a mentor like him as a kid
No doubt only stuff my dad taught me was a way to prison!! So i choose to not do that!!
1- the amount of pure refined knowledge this man has is astronomical.
2- the fact an auto transmission even works is an engineering marvel.
I appreciate you guys doing this! I've never seen transmissions being built. You tear down a lot, but I like to see them go back together right too!
I've bin watched every night for a month. I'm an ex tugboat captain, crane operator, machinist, welder, fitter, carpenter business owner...I've dome a lot of things....but until these videos I didn't have the slightest idea what was inside an automatic transmission. I still don't understand what I'm seeing but it's terrific seeing father & son who know and love what they are doing try to explain it to us. Thank you! Well done.
Yea, I'll never need to know any of this but I enjoy watching you guys. You are a Great teacher!
It takes a high quality human to share this kind of info for free on the internet. Thank you sir!
The son sounds proud asf of his dad. That's good because the dad is really really really good at rebuilding transmissions. I don't even know what to say but excellent work.
I have to say, being a mechanic and high performance engine builder for over 50 years, it is absolutely refreshing to see a craftsman take pride and do a job properly. KUDOS to you, sir, for a job well done!!

I just showed my 60 year old friend how to take a screen shot. He's had a smart phone for almost 10 years...

I was sitting next to him at the time and said 'what f***ing planet are you from ?
You can tell he's an old school professional by the way he handles the parts and the tools! Well done sir! Your son has some big shoes to fill!
I watched the whole video just couldn't stop watching i just found out were my speed odometer seals leaking thank you
Damn this dude can rebuild a transmission in less than 2 hours...that's crazy.
To be fair I think a lot of cleaning and prepping and setup of the parts were the hours done prior to the video. As he said all those tolerances had to be just so. Then a final clean of area and parts to begin assembly. Prep work is usually 90% of a job.
god I miss him doing videos but as busy as the shop is you can't really blame him .
its crazy how much you guys have gotten me into transmissions. Before yall, those things were so intimidating.
I have so much respect for what you guys do. It’s an art and a privilege to watch. Thank you.
All those little tricks are worth a thousand Gold Nuggets! Truly confirms your years of experience and the honesty confirms one's character.

I tried that with a speed wrench, almost knocked my front teeth out!
An aircraft mechanic for 35 years and always used speed handles. But never got the knack for doing that lol.
@@richardlewis7471 Ahh the speed handle is God's gift to us mechanics. I appreciated it greatly especially on the fuel panels beneath the wings and belly of the CRJ 200's I used to work on since we were forbidden to use any power drills. Tedious panels those are, and that gasket we had to always put back on them never wanted to line up with the holes on reinstall, not matter how much pet we put on em! xD
I would trust this guy any day with rebuilding my transmission. I currently need my transmission rebuilt and I’m very skeptical of many repair shops. Wish I could ship my transmission to this mans shop. I would spend anything just to have peace of mind knowing a professional with many years of experience rebuilt my transmission. It is very refreshing to see someone very passionate about their job, keep up the great work!
in 1985 I was building for an aamco in Charleston SC back in them days we would average 5 - 350's or 250s a day. the owner had 3 shops. he had all the units cleaned and on a cart. and all kits and hard parts. he had a full time man that just tore down and cleaned units to build for stock. me and another older builder double teamed 350s one day. he built the drums and pumps and I put them in the case. we built 21 in 10 hours! the next day we did 18 and we were tired at the end.
This just my opinion here.
This man is an artist just like a painter. There’s plenty of people that paint pictures but there’s the few that really show their talent and this man shows his beautiful experience and and shares what he knows. Subscribed.
Grand Master Trans Mechanic, sir you know those things inside out!
I was an auto mechanic around 50 years ago, give or take. The one thing I would never attempt was rebuilding an auto transmission. Your video has demystified the process for me, but, past the point of that sort of thing now personally. A great pleasure watching a Master Craftsman at work, thank you.
Wow, you’re truly Amazing and the best I’d ever seen in my 42 years in the field. Thank you Richard, you’re a real master and great teacher. God bless.
I love watching this, I remember attempting to rebuild the transmission on my old 70 maverick back in 1984, All I had was a crappy book and word of mouth people told me. It worked fine for 25 miles started slipping bad. I had to drive home the last 5 miles in reverse. I can still smell that smell of burned transmission fluid and toasted clutch material. Went to the junkyard and bought a used one for $50 and it lasted the 2 more years I had the car before that old 170 6 cyl engine finally blew.
10:26 “you can buff your shaft” is the only thing I understood through this whole video and not the way he’s thinking either lol
I got lost with planetary thing, I was like Pluto???

Your knowledge about any/all transmissions is mindblowing to say the least. I've gained a lot of helpful information, I hope somehow some way you will create a video here and there for the fun of it. These are truly fun to watch & learn how to address/fix issues as well as how to upgrade one to basically become bulletproof.

Hello Richard/Trent. My grandson & I (when we're not in the garage) are sitting side by side in our spare time, working our way thru your excellent videos. Just like Trent, my brother & I spent our summer vacations from school, working in our dad's transmission shop. Dad's long gone but the memories/lessons are invaluable. His transmission shop was where we learned the lesson of life. Do it right the first time, don't shortcut anything, or it'll come back to bite you in the backside. My dad produced quality work & had an excellent reputation. Lots of word of mouth, repeat customers. Seeing you guys working side by side, sure brings back good memories. Thanks a bunch for taking the time to make these videos. You guys are an awesome team, putting out quality work. Here's a tip from a fellow transmission man. Get you an old servo cover from a C-6, it works great as a driver for installing the governor cover on the TH350, 700, 4L60, etc.
