My father told me once, if you know a good transmission guy, you learn his birthday, you send him Christmas cards and go out of your way to go say hello once in a while. Because a good transmission guy is hard to find. Once you find one you treat them like they were family

Worth their money not because the time it takes for the product but rather the years it took to get to the point to do perfect work in a shorter period without problems.

@Bob Watters its complex to mirror the action of fuzzy logic.. since a computer sees off and on there is no otherway to imitate 'feathering a clutch' In other words if you tell a computer to run a manual it will let the clutch go and the car will stall or jump like a bucking bronco ... The fuzzy logic at least keeps it a an audible THUNK.. and that was early transmissions now they are so advanced with throttle management and timing to change based on how you drive
The number of guys that truly know these things is getting smaller and smaller by the day. I’ve been a tech for over 10 years and this would have taken me much more time and attention to get it right. This is master class stuff right here.
@Waldel Martell this guy has developed a very specialized skill set working on transmissions all day every day. No different than specializing in building engines. You can be a mechanic doing general repairs. This guy has decided to specialize in one specific niche. While I’m sure he’s capable of doing almost any repair, I’m sure I could run circles around him doing engines or front end work, because I do it more often.
The labyrinth is called a valve body and is the circuit for transmission fluid to pass through to either a clutch pack or a band, obviously it goes through other places before the clutch pack but it's the ultimate destination
There's just something about watching a master at anything work. It's just so humbling. You can tell this man has 10's of thousands of hours at this. And it's beautiful.

Man, it's crazy how many parts are in a transmission. Watching this guy casually taking it all apart you KNOW he has experience. Every time he opens something, another 50 parts fall out. Transmissions have some insane engineering and no wonder it costs so much to rebuild.

The industry typically doesn't pay well enough to KEEP guys like this. Last shop I worked in I was making 19/hour and now I make more than that messing with automatic doors. These guys are out there but they usually own their own shop, instead of working for some quack or a large chain.
35 years ago I had my transmission rebuilt for $1,500. I would be THROWING $2,000 at these experts to rebuild my transmission in 2020. I am in awe of the skill I just witnessed.

I've been building transmission and transfer cases for years! The one thing I teach at my college tech class is cleanliness! When u think u have it clean, clean it some more!
It's doable but you won't get that here. There are other channels that take you through reassembly process step by step. If you are interested. It is intimidating at first, but if you take your time, one sub assembly at a time, you will be successful. I have done it many times.
You'd be surprised how intuitive it is, I just do some work at home with my friends on our cars and we're all basically self taught. Just takes time and research my friend.

I remember when i helped a buddy rebuild his trans. We stripped it down and the next day he put everything in a box and took it to a transmission shop. Lol

If you ever watch a local transmission guy who does specialized horsepower stuff, talk with a few customers and see how the work holds up. My local shop has swapped a T56 onto a 428 Cobra Jet, TH400s for truck pullers. I'm going to have a T56 put back into my TH350 Fbody, was gutted to put drive train in a 2nd gen 1980 Maro.
When you do this stuff every day it’s just becomes natural. I’ll do the same building a short block on the vehicles I work on. I know where every bolt on that engine goes just looking at it. The best part is when an apprentice comes and asks you where something goes and you can tell him without even going to look at the car.
This guy should be teaching the newest generation of transmission technicians! Stumbled across his You Tube channel a day or so ago, & he is amazing! Every consumer who is planning to spend money on transmission repairs should first watch this video! The best part is, with so many years of experience and his level of expertise, you can actually trust what he’s telling you!

As an engine mechanic thats not very "in-tune" with how transmissions work, specifically automatics, it was amazing to watch that FULL disassembly in about 15 minutes. Huge props boss man.

I can understand the converter getting fluidic pressure to press out similar to a manual, but thattttt where it stops for me. You said it great, witchcraft and voodoo lol. you guys its not that hard to understand, the trans fluid acts like a red bull and when the motor spins the trans gets all torqued out and angry and takes out on the rear end. 20 years as a mechanic and that is as far as i ever tried to know about them.
I'm from Alabama and when I need transmission work done for my project, I know exactly where I'm going to go. The distance is doesn't matter to me at all because of quality work.

if u meant when referring to that round thing on the side, it applies the 2/4 Band to hold the rear sun stationary via the shell, the round thing was the servo for the apply pin. it has inbuilt accumulators. The holes in it were grinded for faster 2/4 Apply. I thinqué the nastiness she was referring to was the metalically tainted oil.
@Ben T. There's no worry of slander/libel if he's on camera disassembling the units in question. I get that if a customer specifically asks for a cheap rebuild they know they're getting all used parts, but when a shop is paid to perform a full rebuild and cheats the customer with a band-aid trans that might last 10K is an entirely different matter.
I checked google maps. There are seventeen transmission shops in Amarillo. Richard has some heavy competition. His idea of being on RUclips and sharing his skills is a great marketing idea.

His goal is to be a trustworthy transmission shop, and filming his work is the only real way to prove those claims in the auto tranny rebuilding world, so you know you’re getting what you pay for, I don’t see how he has competition at all... the transmission shops that don’t film their autopsies are the ones I’d have a bad time trusting with even just my torque converter.
I think if your shop has certifications or is a franchise it might be possible to lose certification or a franchise by defaming another certified or franchise shop.

i did this very same thing with my dad when i was a kid, it took 2 days, this man just did it in 15 minutes, and explained everything. im gonna go out on a limb and say that this guy has done this a few times.

For what he puts into them it’s a major steal! It cost more than that for a carry out and they actually remove and install it for you. I know where I’ll go when my truck needs a rebuild.
Genius? Not really. More like lots of hard work and creative application of existing technology. Spend a few minutes understanding how planetary gears work, they are the heart of an automatic transmission. All the hydraulics and electronics are refinements on the theme that enable the thing to shift by itself.

Fun Fact: that table he's using is an actual autopsy table from a coroner's office. Richard got it a few years back and found it works great for those liquidy teardowns. The blood drain carries all that red transmission oil into a catch bin.
This man has over 40 years of working on transmissions. Many of these modern units weren't even thought of yet. Clutches. Pillow switches. Solenoids. I'm surprised that he can do these modern transmissions with his old school approach. This man was born with this gift

Ironically, not many actual gears in it. Only have a sense of manual transmissions which are small but have lots of gears. This auto is big with few gears and lots of valves, solenoids, and other control devices... and fluid, I guess.
There are more parts in an automatic transmission that in any other single major component of a vehicle. An engine has far fewer parts than an automatic transmission.
@@Kimoto504 That's true. All planetary gears. You don't need that many. The gear changes happen by stopping different parts of each planetary gear system and the combination of the combined planetary gearsets.
If I ever need to do mine it makes me think I'll just do it, but then again time is money so $2,000 is cheap really in another video he says he has about $1000 in parts and then $1000 labor. But it's worth it.
I am a mechanic and I can tell this guy has massive experience with these boxes. Flowing work, explaining what to look for as he's going and never had to hesitate or put things in order because he knows he would be able to rebuild it even if all the parts got mixed up. Great work mate.

I used to be a Medical Technologist. Worked in medical labs. I loved working on my equipment. Bunch of high tech electronics, delicate . You however have my respect. I followed carefully and I think it might take me a minimum of six months to learn to be able to put that back together without a detailed diagram. Also went to tech school in the army to diagnose and fix tube radios. Man that was fun. Taught people how to use computers when desktops were new. Built a few. Programmed a couple.

This expertise is priceless. Carried my Ram with a dead 46re(big surprise) to a guy who wasn't cheap but was known as THE mopar transmission guy. He knew my dad and had me come back and catch him up on everything while he was working on my transmission when i came by to drop off a trans temp sensor. When i saw him going through the trans like this guy does in the video and the stack of new parts going in regardless of how the old parts looked, I had NO hurt feelings about the big check I had to write. My ram still pulls like new too.

Man, it's crazy how many parts are in a transmission. Watching this guy casually taking it all apart you KNOW he has experience. Every time he opens something, another 50 parts fall out. Transmissions have some insane engineering and no wonder it costs so much to rebuild.
Any old jackass can kick a barn down but it takes a carpenter to build one.

The industry typically doesn't pay well enough to KEEP guys like this. Last shop I worked in I was making 19/hour and now I make more than that messing with automatic doors. These guys are out there but they usually own their own shop, instead of working for some quack or a large chain.
They are around but you gotta turn rocks dig in dark holes to find em. When you find one pay your bill PLUS GRATUITY

35 years ago I had my transmission rebuilt for $1,500. I would be THROWING $2,000 at these experts to rebuild my transmission in 2020. I am in awe of the skill I just witnessed.

It's doable but you won't get that here. There are other channels that take you through reassembly process step by step. If you are interested. It is intimidating at first, but if you take your time, one sub assembly at a time, you will be successful. I have done it many times.

You'd be surprised how intuitive it is, I just do some work at home with my friends on our cars and we're all basically self taught. Just takes time and research my friend.

If you ever watch a local transmission guy who does specialized horsepower stuff, talk with a few customers and see how the work holds up. My local shop has swapped a T56 onto a 428 Cobra Jet, TH400s for truck pullers. I'm going to have a T56 put back into my TH350 Fbody, was gutted to put drive train in a 2nd gen 1980 Maro.

When you do this stuff every day it’s just becomes natural. I’ll do the same building a short block on the vehicles I work on. I know where every bolt on that engine goes just looking at it. The best part is when an apprentice comes and asks you where something goes and you can tell him without even going to look at the car.
This guy should be teaching the newest generation of transmission technicians! Stumbled across his You Tube channel a day or so ago, & he is amazing! Every consumer who is planning to spend money on transmission repairs should first watch this video! The best part is, with so many years of experience and his level of expertise, you can actually trust what he’s telling you!

As an engine mechanic thats not very "in-tune" with how transmissions work, specifically automatics, it was amazing to watch that FULL disassembly in about 15 minutes. Huge props boss man.

@@turbolq4 I can grasp everything mechanically, but I have no knowledge of things like the valvebody and so on. No idea how the pressure is dealt with and whatnot aswell. I can understand the converter getting fluidic pressure to press out similar to a manual, but thattttt where it stops for me.

you guys its not that hard to understand, the trans fluid acts like a red bull and when the motor spins the trans gets all torqued out and angry and takes out on the rear end. 20 years as a mechanic and that is as far as i ever tried to know about them.

I'm from Alabama and when I need transmission work done for my project, I know exactly where I'm going to go. The distance is doesn't matter to me at all because of quality work.

sun stationary via the shell, the round thing was
the servo for the apply pin. it has inbuilt accumulators.
The holes in it were grinded for faster 2/4 Apply.

@Ben T. There's no worry of slander/libel if he's on camera disassembling the units in question. I get that if a customer specifically asks for a cheap rebuild they know they're getting all used parts, but when a shop is paid to perform a full rebuild and cheats the customer with a band-aid trans that might last 10K is an entirely different matter.
I checked google maps. There are seventeen transmission shops in Amarillo. Richard has some heavy competition.
His idea of being on RUclips and sharing his skills is a great marketing idea.

His goal is to be a trustworthy transmission shop, and filming his work is the only real way to prove those claims in the auto tranny rebuilding world, so you know you’re getting what you pay for, I don’t see how he has competition at all... the transmission shops that don’t film their autopsies are the ones I’d have a bad time trusting with even just my torque converter.
I think if your shop has certifications or is a franchise it might be possible to lose certification or a franchise by defaming another certified or franchise shop.

Genius? Not really. More like lots of hard work and creative application of existing technology. Spend a few minutes understanding how planetary gears work, they are the heart of an automatic transmission. All the hydraulics and electronics are refinements on the theme that enable the thing to shift by itself.

The whole teardown looks in a way like an autopsy. The reddish fluid contributes to the authenticity.
Fun Fact: that table he's using is an actual autopsy table from a coroner's office. Richard got it a few years back and found it works great for those liquidy teardowns. The blood drain carries all that red transmission oil into a catch bin.

Ironically, not many actual gears in it. Only have a sense of manual transmissions which are small but have lots of gears. This auto is big with few gears and lots of valves, solenoids, and other control devices... and fluid, I guess.
There are more parts in an automatic transmission that in any other single major component of a vehicle. An engine has far fewer parts than an automatic transmission.

If I ever need to do mine it makes me think I'll just do it, but then again time is money so $2,000 is cheap really in another video he says he has about $1000 in parts and then $1000 labor. But it's worth it.
I am a mechanic and I can tell this guy has massive experience with these boxes. Flowing work, explaining what to look for as he's going and never had to hesitate or put things in order because he knows he would be able to rebuild it even if all the parts got mixed up. Great work mate.

This guy handled that engine with the precision of a brain surgeon while carrying on a full conversation with the cameraman. Immense respect at this man's skill.

I have no knowledge about transmissions or how they work but holy crap there's a lot of parts and it seems like you can tear down and rebuild one of these with your eyes closed! It's fun to see someone good at their job.
I used to be a Medical Technologist. Worked in medical labs. I loved working on my equipment. Bunch of high tech electronics, delicate . You however have my respect. I followed carefully and I think it might take me a minimum of six months to learn to be able to put that back together without a detailed diagram. Also went to tech school in the army to diagnose and fix tube radios. Man that was fun. Taught people how to use computers when desktops were new. Built a few. Programmed a couple.
the way he moves through a transmission amazes me, I dont know how to work on transmissions at all its always fun to watch masters at work and explain whats wrong to dummies like me who say "oooh right!" haha

The owner probably went back to the first shop and wanted warranty. The first shop probably said "You stacked the pump. Your an idiot." .
This expertise is priceless. Carried my Ram with a dead 46re(big surprise) to a guy who wasn't cheap but was known as THE mopar transmission guy. He knew my dad and had me come back and catch him up on everything while he was working on my transmission when i came by to drop off a trans temp sensor. When i saw him going through the trans like this guy does in the video and the stack of new parts going in regardless of how the old parts looked, I had NO hurt feelings about the big check I had to write. My ram still pulls like new too.
Just my luck to find the most honest and hard working trans builders, in a different continent. 😂

There's good honest mechanics everywhere just have to look in the right places. And most of the time they're in the position to turn down work so you might need a little luck lol

Yep that's actually a damn good deal. You can find a back yard trans mechanic to do it for $1200 but they wont replace half the worn down parts in it. This is $2000 and see ya in 100k miles or better....:

Richard is a transmission magician. I'm always amazed how fast he can pull those apart. Be nice to have a competent shop like that where i live.

Blows me away how some people go through all the trouble of going through a tranny and not change out clutches and bushings and use old pumps and then wonder why it don't work people have pride in what you do like this gentleman does people will continue to go back to you if you treat em right!!!!!!

Video editing tip: Apply a "Normalizing" filter to the audio track. This will raise Richards dialog while lowering the air tool noise.

Seems like there is not very many youtubers who bother to normalize the volume, sadly.
Even worse when multiple people are speaking and they're all at different volume levels.
