Roger Ebert said that this is the kind of movie that when you think about it later you smile. I seriously can't see anyone not absolutely LOVING this movie.
Saw it a few days ago after years pf knowing about it. Every time I saw Amelie's face I remembered that I had to see it but forgot to, lol. Never thought I would enjoy a romantic film so much. The scenery, the script, the scenography, music. Everything was perfect. What a gem!

Haha I hated it. Yeah It's pretty to watch and the soundtrack is great but, come to think about it, Amelie is the worst friend/colleage/neighbor you'd ever want to have in your life. She observes people around her quietly and meddles in their business without even telling them. Good intentions could go very very wrong. Even when things go well, they don't know they have been manipulated by this silent meddler. I know it's just me but this movie annoyed the hell outta me when I watched it, it felt almost like a horror film LOL

I can play Comptine, La Dispute and Valse, Comptine was actually not that hard to learn, and Dispute too
But Valse I thought it was really hard because of those fast parts with left hand notes progressions
I'm currently learning J'y suis jamais allé and even if the left hand repeats for the whole piece that one is super hard for me!

i was instantly drawn in when amelie was discussing lifes simplest pleasures, like eating raspberries off of your fingers as a child, sticking your hand into a bin of beans, cracking creme brulee. this film is truly a magical feast for all of your senses. it instantly invokes the deepest feeling of nostalgia even upon first watch.

Never felt so happy in years....when I watched Amélie for the first time, It changed the way I used to see things, I started to live happily, whenever I feel sad, I recall this film... It's a really strange feeling I was just crying watching this film.

Yes it's a beautiful movie especially for foreigners. But in reality when they visit Paris nowadays they are disillusioned. A lot of clichés in it that made France famous. Also the movie was shot 20 years so the Paris back then was also different. I know movies are also made to make people dream but just to remind you that reality and movie are not always connected

This movie is a masterpiece. I remember my neighbor had it on DVD and I was so intrigued by the cover itself that I was drawn into watching it. Needless to say it was not what I was expecting, it was much much better.

I watched this for the first time when I was 15 years old. And it enamored me. I absolutely loved this movie. It was so avante garde and artistic. It was like no other movie I had ever seen before. It's still in my top 10 movies list to this day.

My friend's name is Amelie. I thought it was a Japanese name (in Kindergarten, because she was Japanese), until she told me she was named after the French movie, "Amélie".

PLEASE don't be put off by the French subtitles, it's a wonderful film. Beats just about any of the tripe that comes out of Hollywood these days. Absolute 10 out of 10 : - )

*a little update - 3 years later I ended up visiting the cafe Amelie used to work at. It still looks the same 20+ years after this movie was released. I almost cried, I loved it

This is just such a beautiful movie. I wish more people would see it. I may watch it again.
I ride on that equilibrium. You want more people to see something that's fairly underrated yet you know the more popular something is, the more toxic people will be drawn to it and try ruin it with their misery.
So be glad this piece's fandom isn't tarnished.

I went to Paris for the second time in my life recently and absolutely loved staying in Montmartre and having wine at the Two Windmills Cafe and visiting Sacre Couer and the small market from the movie! It was like stepping into the film itself and it was absolutely magnificent!
I'm surprised you still appreciated it. The Paris describe in the movie never existed. The biggest part of the CGI is removing all the nasty tags on the walls and artificially cleaning the streets.
And of course it's like that. It's fake. It's a movie. It's no different to what Hollywood movies do to New York or anime do to Japanese culture. But still, for some reason, the terrible delusion when confronting reality to fiction is often called Paris syndrome.
Still, there is tiny part of "reality" in all stories, all movies. It's based on it. I'm not saying the story is true or the character are realistic. I'm just saying there has to have a part of true meaning behind a story.
And the movie is playing on that part ad nauseum, for people can love it.
For you to appreciate Montmartre, to be able to perceive that part of reality in reality, that is a skill, a talent, and I for one am quite glad people like you exist.
I hope you'll give a try to the rest of France, it's worth it. Versailles is nice, close to Paris, worth the visit. "Pays de la Loire" and "châteaux de la Loire" (Center/South West of France) is a great area and I 100% recommend it. Mt Saint-Michel is kind of a must, and surrounding country side is great too (feels like England, the region is actually called Britain, as in Great Britain, but just Britain, although it is great too). Marseille city isn't super nice (imho) but the Calanques are gorgeous and worth it if you can hike a little bit (or pay the visit by boat), and the country side far away from Marseille is great too (Provence), just avoid summer time (too hot, too many tourists, spring is much better time for South of France in general). Many other places, depending on what you like to see.

I’m from Paris and i am 24 years old. I live just near the neighborhood of Montmartre, same as Amélie Poulain. This film was thé first that I saw at the cinema when I was 3 or 4, with my grandmother. I am nostalgic of this Paris, as a child I was obsessed with thé movie because I thaught she was me older, quiet with short brown hair and a good heart ahah. Thank you Jean Pierre Jeunet, Yann tiersen and Audrey Tautou for this masterpiece 🇫🇷

I live in Paris, (and I think you do too but if you say that you probably live in the 18th, 19th or 20th district) and no, it's not a city "with crime, violence, corruption and drugs". Honestly, not enough to say it. It's like persons, there will always be positive and negative points everywhere, but it's in the human nature to only see bad things when we always have good things surrounding us. It's been 15 years since I live here (in other words since I was born) and I'm always thankful that I do so. There is many beautiful places, some parisians just tend to forget it. Yes, there is negative points (pollution, cold people [cliché but true for most of the parisians], the burning hate most of us has for subways) And this is coming from someone who live in the 20th.

I just realised something. The show Jane the Virgin is a lot like this movie, I mean the atmosphere, the dreaminess, even the narrator. If you love this movie, there's a chance you'll love that show. Both are favourites of mine.
Check out the show Pushing Daisies. It is visually very similar and the director admits he took inspiration from Amelie. Am pretty sure Yann Tiersen features in the soundtrack too. ☺️
