On a real note, Will Smith saying he wants to be a vessel for love and kindness 15 minutes after assaulting a man on live television then receiving a standing ovation from the crowd is a perfect summation of Hollywood.

My sympathy in this goes 100% to Chris Rock who reacted with astonishing professionalism after a very public and very humiliating physical assault. I’m disgusted by everybody else in the theatre that night who had the power to remove Will Smith but didn’t; joined in the standing ovation after his tearful speech, or consoled him during the break. If they had shown him that his behaviour was unacceptable he would not have partied afterwards and acted like the man of the hour. They made him believe that the attack was justified and that his tearful acceptance speech had fixed everything. Denzel Washington, who is clearly a decent man respected by all, was rightly or wrongly perceived by the Oscar crowd to be on Will Smith’s side and that would have provided the them with a seal of approval. Will Smith’s career should be over, like Roseanne’s is for a lot less, but if it isn’t then we may as well say goodbye to civility once and for all.

I didn't think the joke was particularly funny but that doesn't matter. Nobody is off limits when it comes to being made fun of and being the butt of a joke. Everybody can be made fun of or nobody can be made fun of nobody gets put on a pedestal where they can't be touched. Some people will be born smarter better looking faster richer more privileged what equalizes us all is that we can all be made fun of.

Not the same as someone else kidding about it, but when you can joke about something that has painful aspects, often, if people who love you know you are using humor to cope, they may try to join you in the joking. Don't know how much Rock knows about all of it (he might know about her struggle and her trying to make light of it to move through it).

Having had a long career in psychology and human behavior this is the Best analysis I’ve heard. Exactly on point. I would just add, Jada appeared to be very pleased by Will’s behavior, most likely interpreting as chivalry in her defense. She also feels entitled, an undesirable character trait, condoning and perhaps even celebrating Will’s criminal assault. The Academy should attempt to restore the integrity of this prestigious event by banning Will’s attendance for life.
Why not say that Will should be arrested just as anyone else would have been, rather than only being banned from the academy for life? I’m so tired of celebrities getting away with things that are clearly unacceptable simply because they pretend to be other things for a living. It’s not fair at all.
I think that Jada needs to rethink what kind of wife she wants to be because really good wife would have either walked out or go on up and sit will that was wrong to do that and then walked out because she she's every bit as wrong as he is

Oh, and prior to the much belated (in)action, Will had already resigned from the academy. In addition, there was a "secret" extended group phone call, against academy rules, between Smith and the leaders of the academy, one might speculate no doubt to discuss a strategy benefitting all.

This night was all to him. His “biggest” moment. All he strived eagerly for. He ruined his night and gave it away to a person who is to be treated like the first. And he knew that. As a victim of narcissistic abuse he felt entitled to fight for someone who knew to kill someone’s else’s night. But that’s the way that he has chosen. It’s not love that lets you do crazy things. It’s fear.

A good analysis. One important thing that you left out while describing "the event" is that Will genuinely laughed after the "joke". So he was not triggered by the joke, he was specifically triggered by Jada, by their toxic behavior (which you touched on later). Another point, he has been abusive to others (on movies sets and such) before for decades and now that his good guy patina is wearing off you will hear about those moments. Thanks.

Will Smith's first duty is to himself and his children, when I saw his son Jayden tweet immediately following the incident "And that's the way we do it" it sicken me. It shows what his children have learned from both parents... I believe it was a result of a deeper distorted control Jada has over Will, even perhaps an emotional abuse. The other disturbing thing besides the slap was the second & louder vulgar demand to keep his wife name out of his mouth, I feel like was enough time (even a few seconds) to reflect on what he just did and gather himself but he didn't, he made it worse. Nor did Jada at the time speak up to help defuse & put everyone at ease by going to Chris or even Will or yelling out something like "you're brothers who love each other, don't fight" or anything! In my mind that means one of two things; either she provoked it at the time or before hand or Will does this often and she feels there's nothing she can do so she doesn't try. I doubt it's the latter, but we just don't know. My quick simple assumption is Will Smith is in a bad & damaging marriage. Either way, his children are being effected if they believe that's the way "we" do it??! As if they believe they are entitled to handle the struggles of life differently than the rest of us? I saw the slap as passive-aggressiveness on the part of Will. He has been humiliated and emasculated so many times by Jada that he has smoldering anger towards her. I disagree that he laughed at that joke. I think he was laughing and it took him a couple seconds to process what was actually said. Just like the audience laughing after Chris said "Will just smacked the sht out of me". They weren't laughing at the act, they just hadn't processed what happened yet. But bringing up someone else's "open marriage" is a classless act, pal. Plus it has nothing to do with 1) Chris knowing Will and Jada personally, 2) knowing his wife has Alopecia and 3) proceeding to make fun of his wife's condition for the entire world to see. I am not a clinician, but I saw this assault, live and Will was laughing, until he looked at Jada. Her look was extremely powerful to Will. To me, it was just chilling. When two Narcissists are together, one is dominant and abuses and controls the other. She wanted to ruin Will's evening by making a power move, because after all, everything needs to be all about her. His immediate and seemingly impulsive move shows that he will risk everything to protect himself, and most importantly, her enormous overly inflated sense of self importance. Will reacted. He is not well, but she is a monster.

I do understand Will Smith being in a position where somebody was talking about his wife and some people can't let moments like that pass without doing something and I don't think Will Smith is a bad person in any way shape or form for standing up for his wife that in and of itself is kind of a gentlemanly manly thing to do. But he did commit assault on stage against somebody else who is revered and I think Chris Rock handle it well. I think in a different circumstance Chris Rock have acted differently if they weren't on a live show. You can't say what might have happened but Chris Rock was definitely the gentlemen in this situation

Regarding Chris Rock's seeming to brace himself before the smack: he was severely bullied as a child and has spoken about that a few times. That leaves an imprint on one's psyche. He probably recognized he was going to be struck even though no one else did. Subtle facial changes in Smith's face and also survival instinct. Must have been an intense flashback. Anything that happens to you as a child never really goes away. He's likely been smacked and struck before.
He braced himself because he had no idea what was coming and Will's presence on stage was unscripted. He knew that Will was offended and wasn't sure what was next. Whether Will would take the mike, whisper in his ear some threat or request, or what. Yeah, he was braced for any number of possibilities.
He might have also been half expecting a joke slap or some sort of playful interaction given the high profile stage and people involved - he was defintiely not expecting such a hard slap! Will Smith's ego must be out of control - It makes me think his public persona over the last few years is just a veneer or facade honed from 30 years in show business...

Today there is no discussion of any of the films only the assault. Also, I'm not in the cult of celebrity so no film in my mind will ever overshadow or live up to the true acts of heroism on a daily basis even in the smallest of gestures that people do for each other.
I feel bad for Chris in the sense that he may want to press charges for the assault and has every right-but it would probably be bad PR. A lot of people would view Chris as an a-hole if he pressed charges. The joke was in poor taste, for sure (though Chris may not have been aware of Jada’s medical condition) but responding with physical violence is completely unacceptable, and obviously illegal. Will should be held accountable.

One evening, when I was in college, I was on my laptop in the common area of a residence hall when a friend walked in: Rosie. We were alone. After some chatter, I surprised Rosie by handing her a gift I had bought the previous weekend: a keychain of Baymax from Big Hero 6. She was happy to receive it. All was seemingly going well...until I told her I had mischievously considered sending her the gift anonymously, attached with a note claiming to be written by a boy she had a crush on.
Without another word, Rosie responds by picking up a plastic cup and throwing it in my face. It knocked off my glasses, but otherwise I was physically unhurt. Emotionally, however, I was devastated.
Rosie then proceeds to apologize. She hurriedly picks up the cup and holds it in my face, pleading with me to do the same to her. To hurt her back. To make us equals, in her eyes. I refused and kept my eyes fixed on my laptop. Unable to get me to hurt her back, Rosie left the room, and she took our friendship with her.
I never found out exactly why Rosie responded this way, but when I saw Will slap Chris over a joke about Jada, and the events that ensued in the following days, the memory of the incident came rushing back. Perhaps there was some drama going on between Rosie and the boy she loved that I was unaware of. What hurt the most wasn't the cup hitting me in the face, but that the apology was tainted with Rosie's insistence that I physically hurt her back. Rosie's apology, like Will's, didn't feel like an apology at all. If I had physically hurt her back, she wouldn't have felt the need to take accountability for her actions.
The cliche that hurt people hurt people is true, but I have found that some hurt people are particularly dangerous whenever love is concerned. In their eyes, a joke about their love interest is seen as a personal attack, and, for whatever reason (past trauma, perhaps), they feel a need to respond with violence. Sadly, violence - and not reason - is their language of choice.
Speaking from personal experience, some folks never manage to conquer their inner demons. I hope Rosie and Will learn to conquer theirs. It is the responsibility of the rest of us to be good examples of reason for them to follow. Peace.
The simple explanation is that you acted like an asshole by making a bad joke about your friend's unrequited crush, and she was so upset that she physically assaulted you. Her attack wasn't justified in any way but I'm not sure why you're struggling to understand the interaction.

I couldn't believe security didn't come out and eject Will Smith from the Oscars. Anytime you assault someone, you should face consequences. If a regular dude walked up to the stage, and attacked Chris Rock, security would have tackled him and he would have been tossed out. We should treat everybody the same. And Will Smith's apology was lame. He did not apologize to the man he assaulted, Chris Rock.
Will Smith is too big and powerful in Hollywood. Nobody wants to say or do anything to get in his bad books.
Will Smith did not apologize to Chris Rock because in Will's mind, he had no reason to apologize to him. Will wasn't sorry. He was only concerned about how the Academy would take it, and whether it could affect his career and his public image.
Edit: Will Smith has made a public apology, but he didn't do it that night when he made his Oscar acceptance speech (instead he said things that sounded like his actions were justified and that he and his wife had suffered terribly, and cried and played the victim).
Also, he didn't apologize in person, actually speak to or contact Chris Rock and offer an apology.
I'm sure Smith was advised by his agents and management to make a public apology, once they had all realized how bad this was turning out to be for Smith's image. And so he felt he had to go into damage control mode.
