I just clicked this because I hadn't seen a Nemesis review yet. Wow, this was way better than it had any right to be. Exploring the cultural zeitgeist, parody, an in-depth look at game modes, addressing the specific concerns and house rules available. I was really impressed.
and yet people gave it quite some donwvotes (8:1 ratio up:down). I assume those 80 people were angry it didnt dive right into the board game rules. I think the title was misleading. Tbh I enjoyed this much more than i d have enjoyed JUST the review
Yep...this is the best board game review I've ever seen! The format was great and the content was awesome! More please!
This is by far the best game review I've watched. From broader game theory and IP discussions, to the game itself, to the home brew shout-out, way more comprehensive than I'm used to. Kudos!
I had not idea what I was getting into when this video started. I love Nemesis though!
Smeg off!! Red Dwarf reference! 😃
This was an amazing review. The effort, amount of humor and analysis was spot on. Makes me want to check out your other review you've made on Board Games. Keep up the good work Chris
Thank you
Very entertaining review:)
I guess some people might find this video controversial. ...but either way it was very interesting.
Great review. Will you be playing Lifeform, which seems to lean even harder into its Alien inspiration?
Whoa this ruled! Great job, Chris!
You had me at Dune...
Wow, great job!
One of best reviews i have seen onthe channel. Historically content, the actual game play and mechanics. Real substance which helps me know whether i would purchase the game. Thank you.
That's awesome dude, thank you!
Fantastic review. Great job! I really like this format.
Well I just learned that one of my favorite movies only exist because of a production failure of a film adaptation of my favorite book series.
Excellent, articulate review. My hype for my Kickstarter copy (arriving hopefully early next month) is now well and truly tempered.
I still liked the game...but yeah...tempered. Thank you.
@vann tedd Wait...in what world is 7/10 "so negative". We got a hyper-defensive fanboy here.
@vann tedd Taste differs, every board game reviewer is not going to love what you love. I didn't find the review "overly negative" at all. He explained his problems with the game really well and the criticisms seems valid. It also lines up with the more critical reviews I've seen thus far.
I agree, fantastic review, one in quality to “shut up and sit down”. But I would have liked to hear more about what was good about the game. I was shocked at the end to hear it was a “great game” and a 7 rating.
They have always inspired me. Thanks!
Great review Sir! Thumbs up!
Thumbs up to you as well
The intro... loved it
This is the best review I have seen yet. Hope you do Lockdown if you get it.
Also very impressed by this review. The effort put on it it is amazing, many thanks.
Finally a good real review, that does not try to sell a product but review it.
I didn't like the game.
I had issues but ultimately, I liked it. Thank you.
Pandorum is awesome!
I know, right.
Some people do not like it? it was awesome.
@@josegodoy8461 Apparently...weird. In fact, let's be honest in saying Nemesis is closer to Pandorum in story than Alien.
Really cool review. I loved it. I don't think this game is a good co-op game, but the competitive mode is amazing. I didn't know about those house rules suggestions, but I really like them and I'll use them from now on.
The painting break was hilarious
I agree 100% with this review. I was so puzzled after our first games.. Amazing theme yet game drags like granny in snow..
Fantastic review! When reviews get too in depth with rule mechanics, I always tend to space out since I'm a very visual learner. I like your overview and analysis approach here. I understand the gist of the gameplay and if I'll enjoy this game. I will be keeping an eye out for reviews with your name on it!
"Space out" Nice!
Wow Usually dislike Dice Tower but this review was entertaining
Too bad he's off the Dice Tower.
This is a real good review. I didn't know the game was getting negative attention as an Aliens "rip-off"... I've just been viewing it as a useful descriptor. I don't take the heavy Aliens influence as a negative in the least.
Great video. Also, love the annotated intro :-D
I love your reviews. Thanks for all your effort!
Excellent - nice to see a review that doesn’t automatically worship a game despite its flaws.
Do yourself a favor and check out IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE.
WOW!!! Really, really an amazing review!!!
Looks like TheKingOfAverage was on to something when he said the game was a bit too random
I love your review. Witty and insightful
Absolutely loved this review and really enjoyed the breakaway to paint the alien minis!! Great work!!
I LOVE the way damage to aliens is dealt with in this game!! It is not variable hitpoints, it is the randomness of where you hit the creature (vital/non vital) plus how it reacts... It is one of my favourite aspects of the game. Great review though. I'm still on the fence on whether to get it as it is so expensive here, but I'll try it on TTS while I decide.
Nice intro
That took hours to do right. Thanks. I was worried people wouldn't "get it"
Dias Ex Machina - That was an awesome homage to the Alien movies. I loved it.
This review is like... 15/10. Wow, the introduction got me all hyped and EDUCATED at the same time!
It also spat so many movies I just have to watch now.
Thank you, the maker of this video. You are something extra, extra AWESOME!
Great review Chris! I’m on the fence on their Lockdown KS. For one I have a feeling the randomness with no mitigation may leave me absolutely hating the game. On the other hand, the theme is so so rich. Question is whether theme alone will carry this game into greatness. By the looks of it on BGG (ranked 33), theme alone has thus far. I’m interested in what your opinion is since you’ve posted this video. Thanks
This is 1000% percent better than a license. If they'd gotten the rights, this game would have been some bog standard forgettable crap. KNOWING they didn't have a famous name to lean on forced them to get creative and innovative.
This is BETTER than a licensed game ever would have considered being.
I love this game, great review!
It's just a shame that there aren't more reviews with that concept, approach, and accessibility..
Amazing.
Score is a bit too high for what the game is.
Thematically? Production value? Oh...
Easy 10.
Gameplay?
No more than 6.5.
Amazing and balanced review.
Thanks!
One of the best reviews I e ever seen. I loved the painting break. Wonderful. Not a game for me so thanks!
I believe Star Wars itself was “inspired” by Valerian.
Actually, it was Flash Gordon, but I didn't want to chase that rabbit down another tangent.
Dias Ex Machina and hidden fortress
This was the review that best reflected how I felt about my single play. Sadly it was the only play I needed.
I feel like the randomness of the game fits perfectly into the thematic chaos of intruders in a ship...I like the game a lot
Really great video, but I have a question. Is this coming to retail? Otherwise why review it?
Love the long top ten list you guys do. Pls give us more. This vid is cool too
I love this game.
You dont always have to do 2 actions. You can do 1 action and PASS
I find it interesting that you not only did a long lengthy review but also bought Nemesis and all it’s appendages when it was built ground up with semi-co-op in mind, which you dislike greatly.
Because the KS offered a co-op and a campaign mode, thus the review,
And the review on those two modes was very well done.👍
When I think of Nemesis I think semi co-op. So when I came here and the review dismissed the primary mode the game designer had in mind, it undermined all the superb work done by the reviewer.
Next time I would either change the title to let viewers know you will not be reviewing the primary intended mode or you should review the game in it’s entirety.
I dont care if its a rip off, its a damn good rip off.
Best game in years. My current Nr. 1 Game!
For those that want to know more, you are given 2 objective cards in the normal game, one personal and one corporate. This is the non co-op version that can include killing of players. as soon as the first intruder is on the board, you must make a choice of which objective to complete. This reviewer completely skipped this simply because he doesn't like this mode. The part he mentions about playing the intruders, which can be done in the co-op mode as well, is so that a person knocked out early in the game due to intruders killing them can still play the game. this is NOT a band-aid on a flawed game or flawed mode. it's there so someone doesn't have to sit out the entire game because he drew the queen which proceeded to destroy the player who wasn't prepared. If you're going to review a game, review the entire game and not just the parts you like.
The review specifically said that it covers the co-cop versions because no one else really is.
@@PrinceGastronome where was that said? @9:40 he clearly goes into semi co-op, that he hates it, it doesn't exist. called the intruder player deck a band-aid. At no point in this review that I see does he even mention he was only reviewing the co-op because no one else was.
@@drgnmstr44 3:10. Methinks someone has an agenda. Next time watch a video before shitting on it.
@@PrinceGastronome I did watch the video. I missed that part apparently. doesn't change the fact it's a biased video because even there he states he doesn't like the mode. Saying that others have reviewed it is a pretty poor excuse for not talking about it. he also pointed out a bunch of things wrong but never said what he like about the game yet it's a 7 out of 10? review should give both good and bad points, cover everything regardless of how many others covered it whether you like said thing or not, then give your opinion/rating. Everything about this video review comes across as completely biased in the this is a bad game but if it's supposedly a 7 for him, what did he like.
@@drgnmstr44 Well, then add your dislike to the few there. The likes indicate that you may be in the minority,
This is the fist Nemesis review that seems to take out the fun out of the game.
I did like the intro, though.
I beat the campaign as 2 players. Lost one character in mission 4 but ended up barely beating the last mission with 1 surviving character. For me it's a game about doing math and controlling the randomness and that's really tense. I think it captures that Aliens feel completely. You should never really fight the aliens, just retreat. It's a story telling engine
But D&D has short elves...
Lol your voice is dropping with hatred and sarcasm... Then "great game" hahah
Space horror. That's the genre you're looking for. It's a Thing.
An objective to kill the queen shouldn't prolong the game much if you just kill her by self destructing the ship.
avp second edition is better but cannot get it anymore really.
Dean Medcalf bought it and sold it lol, absolutely hated it but great miniatures. I prefer co-op games so my own fault really.
All things regarding enemies is a joke in implementaion ! Worst i have ever played. Time & allies are more threatening.
Nice review but this is straight up Aliens the game in simple terms. This isn't just using themes and ideas from the Alien franchise. This is nearly a direct "People encounter a mysterious alien with claws, teeth, no eyes, etc. on a ship deep in space." Alien is the most successful and prolific version of this type of thing so it is going to be the one associated with anything else in the genre. I think there are some false parallels here that are drawn. Some things are inspired by others while others are basically direct copies or close imitations. You see it more(maybe most) in video games. Take MMO's for example. Just because a MMO is fantasy doesn't make it a World of Warcraft clone, but games like Allods online are obvious rip offs with even the same art style and aesthetic. (Which funnily enough WoW got a lot of shit for supposedly copying Everquest.) Just because this game it doesn't follow the exact same plot of Alien doesn't mean it isn't very close.
Your Dead Space example would be better compared to Halo's flood, which was the inspiration for Dead Space's monsters as told by some of the devs(so I heard.)
Inspiration is one thing but this is fairly obvious imitation. And I don't think that's a bad thing in this case! The theme is great and we don't really have a board game to fill it until now. I'm not sure if the game is for me as the typical billion things are added onto the game just because it was a kickstarter are included but the art and theme look great.
I thought the game was boring, random, and uninspired. It is beautiful, but not a good game. Most of the hype is the kickstarter effect IMO.
The pretty standard opinion on developing concepts is fine. Teaching how to play is garbage, watch anything else. He talks to quickly and not clearly.
