Hey Sam, I thought I was lucky enough when I got a last second ticket for the extended rules teach and playtest at Gen Con today, but when I found out YOU were the one to teach me the rules and gameplay, it became such a surreal experience. I’ve been so grateful for your content which has helped improve my Root immensely since I started a few months ago, and I cannot wait to play more Arcs with the copy I got-now that I’ve received the best initial Exposure. Props to you and the Leder Games team for making mine and others’ experiences memorable. Keep up the great work!
I feel like this is the best breakdown I've seen so far both on the mechanics and how the game feels. Thanks for putting it together, really appreciate the clarity and production value
As I don't have a great ability to get in person games going as much as I would like, I have been playing a very large amount of digital board games over the last few years. I really hope Arcs gets a digital adaptation as this is my first time really learning what the game is about, and it definitely sounds fun and crazy. I'm pretty sure I understand more or less how all the mechanics work based on the video, but it would be cool to see a mock up of a few turns to see the whole process in action. Or maybe even a little footage of your next session would be cool. Either way, this is on my radar now!
if you have tabletop simulator, you can play it on there! its how im getting my first games of it done despite not living near gaming buddies right now
First video I’ve seen by this channel. Wow, love your style. You are very informative with what the game is, how it’s played, the overall experience, and what type of player will enjoy it. Not least is your ability to edit and keep the audience interested. I adore Leder games so I didn’t need much convincing to pick up the game. Just dropped 120 on preordering everything. Can’t wait to get it to the table. Keep up the great work!
I appreciate that! I think my style works for some. I have this annoying tendency to almost teach the game as opposed to just explain. But I think I’ve found a mix that works for me!
The way you explain things/the editing is perfect. This is the pacing and perfect amount of info to really get an understanding of what I needed to know
@@LordoftheBoard u think this will be better than Root? Lol i mean root has set the bar pretty high. My appreciation grew for it the more of your vids i watched.

@LordoftheBoard My friends and I are a group of four who play board games every week. We are looking for a new competitive board game. Is Root a good choice for us or the Arcs? Mind you, we adore challenging, strategic, heavy board games.
I think Root is a more challenging game! I like root better because I’ve played it more and I like how much more asymmetric it is. I can also do what I want on my turn. Arcs is easier but also has a fun way of making you puzzle what you can do on your turn. I don’t think you would go wrong with getting either .
@@LordoftheBoard My brother thinks it's cool. Just need to get my bi-weekly gaming group together again. We haven't met for a month and I'm like UUUUUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!!! MUST PLAY ARCS WITH YOU!!!!!!!! Lol. I ended up just breaking into the campaign by myself because it was just sitting on my shelf staring at me. And I was like screw it. I'll just play two players and play both just to see how it works. Now I'm like this is the true Arcs! DDDD: Need to finish Act 3 of my first game but it's been cool to see the story unfold. Empire collapsing into feudal fiefs as the Planet Breaker builds his Planet Hammer to destroy a planet only to be stopped by a fleet of ships from the old empire. It was almost the plot of Star Wars.
But how does this trick-taking element work out thematically? That's one of the areas if the game where I'm failing to see the fun. The mechanic might provide a lot of juicy choices, but that doesn't mean a story is being told.
It’s hard to describe why it works out so well. For one this is regarding the base game not the campaign game. But at least for us. In the base game it very much simulates spreading yourself too thin as an empire. Or making opportunistic moves as an empire. Taking gambles as an empire. It feels like those choices reflect the drama element during gameplay. I would definitely try it out before buying tho if you are not convinced!
Imagine it thematically as your hand representing your empire's general potential for action during this chapter of the story. If you think about how an actual space opera, galactic conflict between empires would go. It wouldn't play out like each empire is a hive mind being controlled by a central intelligence, but like an empire spread across numerous systems with inertia and internal politics being directly influenced by the actions of your galactic competitors. You're not playing a God King with perfect, unilateral control over your loyal ships and cities, but representing the collective effort and momentum of your empire's motivations. So the trick taking element represents how the course of events is directly influenced by the actions of the other factions (the lead suit/initiative) and the various factors, politics, and general logistics of running a galactic empire that influence the empire's motivation and opportunity (the draw).
Thematically I see it as even though you're in control of this little empire, you're still at the whim of various factions / players within that empire. Positions of power often can't do anywhere near as much as people think, there are factors outside their control.
For me, being limited by the cards made it terrible for me. I felt that I couldn’t take advantage of opportunities because I would never have the right cards available. Before I got done, I knew I was never going to play it again. I’m pretty sure I can see why some people are raving over it. Just not a game for me and thought I’d share my experience. Honestly glad everyone else seems to love it though. Big fan of Cole Werhle and Leder Games 😊
Yeah that is intriguing. Because I feel in those scenarios you have to look at what opportunities are available. And so far I don’t believe a hand doesn’t have them. You can always find something to do. Or at the least set up strongly for on the next round or chapter. Hope you will give it more chances! I find leder games to be better after multiple plays for many. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts too!
I love when you say you can steal resources or cards from an opponent as a really fun mechanic. But I find in practice these mechanics end up forcing people to rage quit.
Really?? Oh. Yeah our group likes stuff like this. Otherwise you would run into runaway leader scenarios. I like it most because it comes at great risk and sometimes doesn’t even work. There’s no action to steal directly, but you can gamble for it. That’s all very much up to the players though. Thanks for watching!
will you make more villainous videos? I've gotten back into it recently and would love reviews or guides for characters in newer sets (mostly oogie boogie and the expansions for sw/marvel
Dope lighting and production values! In terms of weighting/complexity, how would you rate this out of 5? And is there a lot of analysis paralysis or do the turns flow quite smoothly? Thanks!
Complexity I would give it a 3.5 but easy to pick up once you play the first game. The turns go really fast once you have gotten the game down. But the first few places AP is inevitable. It really quickens the more you play and turns are quick.
I agree! It’s in the playlist I made for arcs game nights in the description. But also I reference at the bottom of the description what the song is too. :)
I am sure you have already been asked, but how did you compare your initial impressions and experience of Arcs with your initial impressions and experience with Oath? Oath to me was so game-changing in my limited board game experience. Root felt like the cornerstone of why I love board games, but then Oath brought me to a new landscape. What would you say Arcs provided that Oath didn't or maybe struggled at? Thanks for your videos Sam!
So arcs base game only hints at what Oath can do. In the way of collecting a court so to speak. However the campaign is much more approachable I guess? And it also feels like less pressure somehow. I think I’m going to be releasing a video breaking down the ways Arcs changes from oath and why each is good for different people!
Once again, masterclass video! Great overview of the game which gets me even more excited for this than I already am, and honestly more to the point than the SUSD video, and gorgeous production values as always. Can’t wait to finally play this game and really hoping I can get a game in with you at PAXU this year!
I have to say, I love your boardgame collection. And I never say this. I'm not usually one to comment on youtubers' collections. They get the games for free, sorry I'm not impressed and they're usually bizzare collections of all sorts of different games that you know they're never going to play again. Yet somehow I feel you make the most of yours because I'm looking at your games and it makes sense, I love almost all of them. It is a bit odd that you can play something as complex as Pendragon yet prefer Terra Nova over Terra Mystica. But I'd happily play all of your games and have played most of them.
Awh thank you very very much! I am very picky. If I don’t like a game it usually doesn’t stay long. I look for stuff I genuinely want to play more and more. Also Terra nova I am experimenting trying to start with it then transitioning over to Gaia Project (my favorite). Age of Innovation tho may pass it given time. Thanks for watching and for commenting! Also you have good taste in games. 😉
@@LordoftheBoard Ditto. I guess I'm a purist and think of Terra Mystica as the perfect version of the three. It's tight and I love the races. Age of Innovation is a party on cardboard. You get everything plus more of everything. So I'd definitely recommend Gaia Project for your dilemma. The tracks are awesome and it's much better to have predetermined, balanced tribes rather than modular.
@@ioannispaxinos5171 I agree about having too many games, dilution, and not having enough playthroughs. But people are allowed to prefer different games from you.
I'm probably in the minority and just a quick scroll through the comments I didnt see this, but I feel like there's and inconsistency in flow when you introduce the next segment. Like when you said somehwat like: A Trick Taking Game, but then don't mention and just going into the content, its done a few times throughout. I went back a few time and thought it was cut or something, then realized it was edited like that. The statements feel unfinished which I know is followed by the title of the segment. Either way, great video as always!
Yeah I was wondering if it would annoy or be engaging. My goal was to make the video feel faster than it is. Thank you for the feedback!! And thanks for watching.

This looks very cool, but much more crunchy than the previous games. Will the really slow analysts just win this game every time or is there room to roleplay and hit each other over the head for pity reasons?
There is a ton here. I’ll say the smartest in our group did the worst just the other night. It’s really hard to secure victory and really does favor the opportunistic and bold.
I have tried to get my friends to play Root. But the rules overhead with all the different factions has made it really difficult. Do you think Arcs would be much easier for them to get hooked on? Or should I look at something like Dune Imperium?

@@youvelookedbetter Εrm.... sure? I never said otherwise.
where'd you get that badass shirt?
A website called Rsvlts :)
@@LordoftheBoard not annoying, just felt cut. Thanks for reading and replying! Truly great video. Wanted to share what I thought as I watched.
I am so exited to get this game to the table, thank you for your video one it, too!
Man seems like this channel has really gone through an ‘Arc’
I see what you did there…
@@LordoftheBoard nice and will you be covering the blighted reach campaign portion of the game
@@starman825 yes! In a part 2 of sorts. The thing is… I gotta get more campaigns under my belt so that I can discuss it and give it honest thoughts like I did here :) so it’ll be a little bit!
@@LordoftheBoard nice
Great video! How will we ever be able to get our hands on it?
Thank you for the reminder! There is a preorder link! I will put it in the description :)
@@LordoftheBoard Oh!! That's good to know!!!
@@LordoftheBoard Ordered!
@@2532robh1 yay! I hope you enjoy it :)
The intro, for me, was a la Dune the movie.
Al la? 👀
@@LordoftheBoard, apologies. It was a typo which I have corrected. “A la” means “according to” or “in the manner of”.
@@myeviljewels6539 wow that is high praise!! I appreciate it ❤️
VERY GOOD
Thank you so much!!
Whoa whoa whoa this cinematography is on another level though! 🔥 🔥 🔥 waiting for that arcs strategy guide drop next 🫡
Haha how did you know… 🥹
Love the stuff
Thank you very much!!
Are you still planning on making videos for the marvel villainous twisted ambitions box?
Marvel is a bit further out if at all. I realized my time is pretty spread thin when I commit to all the villainous games.
Does Campaign arcs have components and legacy style assets that can be added to the base style game? Like Scythe: Rise of Fenris?
Yeah a little bit like that! It’s all resettable :)
🤩🤩🤩
I have tried to get my friends to play Root. But the rules overhead with all the different factions has made it really difficult.
Do you think Arcs would be much easier for them to get hooked on? Or should I look at something like Dune Imperium?
I think arcs without Leaders and Lore is a great way to get them started. Also.. mabye for something even a tad easier Ahoy is a game I really dig that you could check out. Also by leder :)
Is that the Pendrsgon RPG to the right? Staffords?
Not the rpg! It is a coin wargame :)
Psionics are boss because you can always copy an action from the lead card.
Yes! So many combo options with psionics!
leder games the best when it comes to making asymmetric games! curious, have you had the chance to play imperium horizons yet?
I have played imperium horizons and I love it! I want to work on some videos on it. But not sure when I’ll get to it.
Why isn't Kate in more videos? Also can we please get an oath teach and play video to pair with your top 5s ?
I agree Kate should be in more videos! I will see if she is up for one soon.
Hmmmm. I’ll consider that! I don’t typically do how to play style videos.
Is it worth getting this game for 2 player only?
It is a fun 2 player game. And it goes by quick! I would say it’s at its worst at 2 but at 2 it is still a really crunchy and juicy game :) soooo…. Yes!
Love your shirt
🍻 cheers!
What about your plastic detailed pieces vs the wooden pieces? Where can we get the plastic pnes?
Yeah I forgot to mention I have the minis. It’s in the description under my preorder link but that is all! There is a miniatures expansion on the Leder Games website.
Will we be getting any villainous content soon??
I have sugar and spite coming!
Watching amazing reviews of a game that won't be available for purchase for god knows how long makes me sad!
I sure hope it becomes available at least when they say it will! :)
Ayo what's the song in the beginning?
First song in my description :)
Did you clean the wash off your figures? If so did you have to do anything special to do that?
I did not!! I really should have mentioned that those are the minis expansion lol… oops. But no I haven’t done anything to them. :)
Gameplay vid when?
Oo… I would love to do a gameplay.
🤩
Love the shirt ❤❤❤
Thank you so much! SW forever ❤️
SW forever ! I was born in 1977, Star Wars and Root is Life !!
All Cole Wehrle games fan also
I like your videos very much, thanks for doing this !
We have also a great Root Community here in France !
Retail release date 10/31 for those interested
Thank you for this!
Could you please answer my question?
Hi! What was your question?
Cool review thanks for the content but your camera is set way too dark!
Haha sorry! I like it incredibly moody. That’s typically how I shoot my videos.
@@LordoftheBoard okay that's your choice, but what you think is moody lighting is actually bad lighting for recording videos, you are crushing the blacks completely and it will look extremely strange on the vast majority of computer monitors out there. I just tested it on two monitors and it looks pretty terrible, only the OLED screen was able to show much definition with the blacks. Anyway, thanks for the content!
@@somerandomperson8282 yeah if you are talking about the intro, It was supposed to dip to pure black but I edited it incorrectly.
I will say out of the almost 20k people that have watched this not a single person other than you has had a problem with it. Everyone had been saying it’s gorgeous or looks great. Probably cause they expect it to look this way with my b roll.
The whole video is a serie of close up . At no point do we see the whole of the board. No idea if the game is pretty or not.
About 0:55 you can see the whole board. I do a lot of close ups because I like to highlight individual components and mechanics that I discuss. I just typically my style of video making.
