    Just played my first game a few days ago. We played the full co-op version, and discovered early on that the aliens take damage from fire suppression. Our mechanic spent almost the entire game in the fire suppression room mortaring the aliens and killing several of them. Unfortunately, the aliens eventually found him eventually and most of the crew ended up in the emergency room with no ammo in their weapons facing the queen. It turns out trying to melee the queen to death doesn't work.
    The co-op mode seems tacked-on as an afterthought, but I would definitely recommend playing it for your first few games until all players have learned the mechanics. Also, page 10 of the rule book REALLY should have been put on a quick reference sheet. You will use that page a lot.

    Just decided to play our first game of Nemesis. My buddy didn't like the idea of having different objectives, but luckily the game has a full coop experience with it's own objective cards that differ from the standard game experience. I don't know if I ever want to play a game any other way... the game is so exciting... we decided at the end of our game to sacrifice me... I had to go to hatch control system which opens up the escape pods but there was an alien guarding it... Me - I was in a wheel chair with a laser pistol.... I had to unlock the doors so he could get out. He decided to split to the generators to set the self destruct and then would launch out an escape pod... He would survive, we would blow the ship up, and the earth will receive our signal. It would be a win, but I had to unlock the escape pods. He was bleeding and any more wounds and he would die, I had been attacked multiple times and was full of contamination cards. He had 1 contamination card and so we were going to risk him not being contaminated and being the sole survivor.
    Well suffice to say, he died at the escape pod chamber making to much noise and an alien running to attack him. I had managed to survive my encounter with the alien, but it didn't matter since he was dead and the room broke down and I was unable to fix it. Now for us to win, I had to survive and get off the ship, he had already started the self destruct so it was a matter of making it to the exit before the ship blows. I made my way down the same path he went, and rolled my way to success making no noise. I draw an event card, the aliens move... and the one guarding the escape pod leaves via through a technical corridor... oh my ... the way is clear. I just need to be quiet... I manage to wheel myself through a burning room, I stop at the surgical center and perform a surgery healing my serious wounds and removing my contamination cards... the self destruct system auto unlocked the escape pods and so I just needed to survive a turn or more...
    I get to the escape pods, but I make some noise in the corridor behind me as I pass... I see the corpse of my dead friend next to the air lock. I climb in the escape pods and eject... The ship blows up, signal has been sent, the analysis of an infected corpse complete.... I survive.... We win... but the turn was I thought I was going to die trying to save him, but it ended up that fate reversed the roles...
    EPIC! This first full coop experience was the best I have played. Stuff happens and you deal with it... At one point I had to back track to a room to turn on a fire suppression system to flush out an alien/intruder from the room he was in so he could survive. Yes I turned on the fire system, and the alien ran out of the room.... if you are an Aliens move fan... this is the game that lets you have that experience of trying to survive.
    I can't wait to play again... full COOP .... of course.

      It sounds like a Great game, it plays out like a story. Thing is, u can mess with your friend and say I was never Planning to save u, but sacrifice u instead lmao (or can say that to make em mess up and u accomplish killing player). Or u can keep providing proof (or supposed proof) that youre working towards common goal too.
      Another comment said its easier to go for own objective to win rather than common goal, but then if everyone in group does that, u have to fight not only the intruders but the others which may become harder than a Supposed common goal, and things changes meanwhile.

    If the semi-co-op bothers you, there's a variant that makes it pure co-op. All players just have personal objectives and have them face-up.
    Or you could just not deal out the corporate objectives at all (or shuffle one into a pile of personals to limit the game to one "traitor"- I'd definitely try that)... There are all kinds of ways to tweak this. :)

    I generally don't like semi-cooperative games much either. However, it also heavily depends on the players if you have people from the if I can't win, I'll tank the game crowd, then they become nigh impossible to win. But I think this game makes a move in the right direction. Because there is no group objective per se. My goal may be get an egg and return to Earth, but I can do this in the hibernation chamber (which means the ship must be functional and heading toward Earth) OR in an escape pod. So I can basically move about the ship on my own and not care much about what the others are doing as long as they're not out to get me.
    On the other hand, since the game is rather hard, just killing someone and waiting near an escape pod is much simpler than the objectives that require that common goal. And if everyone is doing a personal goal, then picking the goals that require the ship to return to Earth is a sure way to lose. You can't accomplish that by yourself.

    What's this "the problem of semi-coop games" exactly? Never heard Tom mention it before, it sounds more like a personal thing.

    • @Falkdr
      @Falkdr 5 лет назад +17

      Tom mentions it every so often.
      1st, it's a problem of long-term gaming groups, for example, our gaming group knows each other very well. If someone makes an "ineffective" coop move, he would IMMEDIATLY blow his cover as a traitor, because everyone of us is so well at playing our games.
      2nd, you have two winning conditions (win by yourself or win with the group) which exclude each other. if you follow both (to hide), it's harder to win instead of someone who can follow his single goal (coop usually).

    • @Falkdr
      @Falkdr 5 лет назад +2

      @vann tedd Theres is a moment of surprise and betrayal, which is exciting, I give you that. But you make it better count when you blow your cover.

    • @TodiloDaSloth
      @TodiloDaSloth 5 лет назад +2

      @@Falkdr in a game with hidden objectives (as oppose to pure traitors) ineffective moves can be used also to trick people into thinking you have an objective you don't thus allowing even for gaming groups to play. Also, for me what is annoying is that it is such a random element in a lot of games. You play for 3 hours and game ends, ohh victory ... no someone had a card that sais they win instead .... boring as hell.

    • @Falkdr
      @Falkdr 5 лет назад

      @@TodiloDaSloth right, traitor mechanisms are way more annoying than hidden objectives. If the game is really tough, you don't have much room for manoeuvres, though.

      @@Falkdr
      1. I have played in a long-term gaming group for 20 years and semi-coop can work great if it well designed. Both Dead of Winter and Battlestar Galactica makes it possible to contribute hidden(with cards) to goals, this makes it hard for any one else to know what side you are on. Dead of Winter makes it even better where each one have hidden goals that you could excuse yourself with when doing strange choices. Semi-coop is in a way a type of social deduction mechanic.
      2. Follow both as long as it is duable and not to hard, when you reach a crossroad where its to hard to follow both pick then one that you have most chanse to achive.

Nobody is going to not send The Dice Tower games just because they got one negative review, and I doubt Tom cares one way or the other as he has more games to review than hours in the day.

    I agree with Tom on 1 point, the game needs more CO/OP missions, truth is the game is hard, so far out of 8 games I managed to survive and win 3 and my wife only once and we only play CO/OP on the easy board. I must say here, that I'm a rule freak and we follow them all, every time I have a doubt about pretty much anything Rulebook > Google, so we play the game as is.
    One of my personal victories was a result of my wife dying, thus opening the shuttles on the last turn and I was able to roll lucky enough to roll an intruder in the shuttle bay, I was able to kill it (soldier all out) on it and it died and with my last two cards I entered it and left. (the space jump time track was at 1, self destruct was at 4). EPIC WIN, winning is rewarding.
    Another thing to note, if the objective is "Player X must not survive" you might as well play to help the crew, chances are they won't survive anyway, at least from what I've seen so far.

    Best boardgame EVER by lightyears. A new thematic story told with every play through. It just creates the most dramatic scenarios that make this game absolutely an 11/10. For me, it literally is the cream of the crop in every single way imaginable. And community groups out there are wonderful too. This game will be standing all the tests of time, it’s just that good. Slap on some Aliens background music, dim the lights and go blindly wandering into the darkness of the scary as hell corridors of the Nemesis,…

    The one you didn't touch on was the player elimination in this long of a game.
    We played our first game recenlty, for 5 hours. And after i think 3 hours, we drew an event card that basically said "if x applies to you, you are dead now". Not even a chance to handle that, but just straight up dead.
    We understand that the theme is being upheld here, but that person had to sit around doing nothing for 2 more hours. At least some other people joined the person soon after. They could've started a second game. At the end it was just one person left, who played solo for about half an hour. And everyone was just checked out.

      @@jackroche2065 Yes, the host told us about that once the first person died, but then immediately countered with saying it gibes the intruders a heavy boost, which we REALLY didn't want to deal with. (published in North America by Stephen B. at Stronghold Games they of Survive! Escape from Atlantis 30th Annv) I can't imagine how much the ALIEN license would cost. In Mark C.'s BGG designer diary I think they didn't even bother trying. They brainstormed themes and arrived at Revolver. I have no doubt BGG users will have custom cards. All the things Tom says that he doesn't like is what I love in games. I love games that are tough, mean, and have depth of theme. I never had a problem with a semicoop game. On the other hand many of the coop op games I find issues with of why is I playing this with a group sense it feels like we are playing it as a single mine. I just got the game the other day and I love it. I just hope it is as difficult, mean and dark to play. Tired of easy friendly stuff. Nemesis can be played coop, semi coop and solo and that is why I love about it.

    I think that the possibility of having a traitor adds to the tension of the game. @@Hey_Fab I know you can't. What I meant is that in games like Dead of Winter you don't target a player specifically to fulfill your betrayer goal.
