    Funny enough the lack of story and narrative was a big plus for me. I love games like the Arkham Horror LCG, but it doesn't feel like a card game. It feels like a board game with cards instead of a board. Arkham can take a long time to set up, feel bloated with special mechanics and big blocks of text.
    Marvel Champions actually feels like a card game, where turns are fast and concise and you're firing off card combos, setting up future combos, or deciding to take one for the team to get rid of threat or a particularly nasty minion.
    Very fun game, I still have a ton of content I haven't played in the box and I already can't wait for even more content and options.

    Thanks for a more in-depth review. One thing I noticed, however, was a villain needs to defeat ALL of the Heroes to win, not just any single Hero as stated.

    • @solodragun
      @solodragun 4 года назад +1

      How about if you're playing the villain against other players, if you're playing 1v1 obviously last player standing wins. If you defeat one hero, but the other player beats you in a 3 player game = draw. Beat 2 of 3 of the hero players in a 4 player game, that would be a win for villain obviously. I really like the idea of this 1 vs. many play potential. I wonder how well it would support this?

    • @RetroMaticGamer
      @RetroMaticGamer Год назад +1

      It doesn't support this at all. Nobody plays the villain. The villain is an automated deck that is not controlled by anyone. It just automatically attacks everyone and deals them cards at random that represent the things it's doing. Players are always heroes and only ever heroes, working together to defeat the villain.

  • @keel1701
    @keel1701 4 года назад +6

    I would like to know how this compares to Sentinels of the Multiverse as well. Less set up and customization in SotM but that's also a little quicker probably?

    • @Mikewar1230
      @Mikewar1230 4 года назад +3

      Well so far between Variants of heroes and the numerous decks available (counting environments) I think SotM has a lot more customization at this point. Yeah deckbuilding being available probably will give Champions the edge once more things come out for it, yet with deckbuilding games a downside I find is that some cards will never be used or played, whereas with Sentinels you get your deck so you will be seeing everything by some point, nothing will be left to never be used. Also with premade decks, they can have some really OP cards and other mediocre and still keep the deck fairly balanced.

  • @CodeIguana

    • @lugaruclone
      @lugaruclone 4 года назад +7

      I would say it certainly has some Sentinels DNA in there although for me this will be replacing it... mostly because there are less dead turns and less of the villain tearing down everyone's ongoing cards at once.

    • @Mikewar1230
      @Mikewar1230 4 года назад +6

      @@lugaruclone Ive seen this said elsewhere. I understand that some turns are just draw 2 if you have nothing else to play at times in SotM but I find it so thematic when the villain wipes your board. The game would often be too easy without that and yeah it drags the game out longer but I personally love the thematic feel of coming back from the brink to take the villain down after they had a huge bomb hit our boards.

    • @SuperDoggy99
      @SuperDoggy99 4 года назад +7

      This game is profoundly easier than Sentinels, so I can see why some people would prefer it. It's basically a hybrid of legendary and sentinels, with the abstract mission mechanics of lotr lcg. It's a good game, but I would never replace sentinels; sotm has way more interesting (and challenging) deck mechanics than this game, even with the so-called deck building aspect.

    • @camipco
      @camipco 4 года назад

      There are negative status that make you skip your next action of a particular type, but they don't stack, so you can't get locked out. I haven't seen anything that stops you switching or gaining tech. There's cards that blow up a piece of tech but not all of it.

  • @Bodyknock

    Legendary Marvel is my favorite solo board game, I have all but one or two expansions and I’ve played it solo more times than I can remember. I really like deck building as a mechanic so Legendary scratches that itch. I’m less excited about actually creating decks for collectible card games, the deck creation is what turned me off of the Arkham Horror Card Game. However I do like the idea of the multi-part scenarios and fairly intricate villain decks, and some of my friends don’t like deck builders so this game might be a better fit for them.
    Guess I’ll have to check it out once i see it in the store and if the price isn’t too high give it a whirl.

    • @nicksbordone5271
      @nicksbordone5271 4 года назад

      This plays a lot like the arkham card game, but the setup is easier and deck construction is simpler. The gameplay is also less finicky and easier because you don't have different locations. Just played a few games and I think this will replace arkham for me for these reasons.

    • @thelocalfortuneteller
      @thelocalfortuneteller 4 года назад

      I like to sort my collection into a folder by card cost and treat the deck building as a sort of “shopping” phase that happens before the game. It is pretty clear which cards interact with what and as these games are typically solo or cooperative there is no pressure to make a high performing meta deck.

    • @camipco
      @camipco 4 года назад

      This isn't a deck builder. You build a deck before the game starts, but then you keep it for the whole game. So it doesn't have that progression of your deck getting better with deckbuilders, but it does mean the decks are more unique.

Captain America is without question a flagship, Hallmark character in the Marvel Universe, and it's completely inexcusable he's not even included in the base game. Just another way to make more money off of you later, especially those with "collectionist" mindsets. Thor should have been in there as well. as soon as I saw how mechanical the game played (much like LOTR) I was basically out. I was hoping for some light story telling and more thematic superhero stuff and this might as well be Sentinels of the Multiverse. A missed opportunity to make it a super hero companion to Arkham Horror LCG and a no bueno from me.

    • @codydavis3100
      @codydavis3100 4 года назад

      I'm fine with this being more scenarios based. I love Arkham LCG but because of their business model I didn't feel like buying 2 sets to play with 3 or 4. This let's me play with 4 people right away and I can play whatever scenario and not worry about a narrative. So I'm excited to hopefully get this under the tree this year or my birthday next year.

      @@codydavis3100 my problem is games like this bore me to tears. when i played lotr for the first time with a friend i felt like i was about to fall asleep. I shouldnt feel like that with Marvel Champions, but when i saw it being played it looked like the same mechanical stuff with no big fluff or enticing concept put in it, something that AH LCG does quite well. So in my head this should have been made more in that vein than as a replacement to LOTR.

      lordxmugen In my opinion the story element of Arkham made it a much more 1 and done experience for me. Once I saw a scenario play out I had little interest in going through that story again which basically made the expansions essential in order to keep the game fresh. This seems needlessly complex... and generic at the same time.
    Generally, for deck building games, either building the deck is part of the game (think draft games), or the rules are simple (MTG: 60 or more cards, up to 4 of each... except basic lands.).
    Beyond that, this seems both stingy with characters, and wasteful. Stingy as you get 3 villains (and Rhino is the Spiderman one?) vs 5 heroes, and wasteful as you get named characters who are part of both villain and hero's deck. Like, I can understand wanting to be able to "recruit" other characters (though perhaps not in a 2+ character game?), but I'd also like freedom to do so. Why can't Klaw use the Rhino as his henchman, for example?
    I like the "secret identity" thing.
    I'm not sure I like shuffling the hero's problem(s) into the villain deck... this seems like there should be a couple of problems for each character, and you draw randomly each game.
    Finally, I'm not a fan of the "costs" tabs. WOTC's Transformers does something similar, and it just seems... arbitrary. In mtg, a swamp taps for 1 Black mana. But here? One of my cards can be discarded to pay for 1 or 2 of a cost on another one of my cards? Why? The cost should be tied to the flavor of the card, and at least from what I see here, it's not. Also, the cost is unrelated to the effect of the card, creating memory issues. "Oh, this card is bad... but i can discard it for two green things, so it's good?"

      I mean deckbuilding here IS far simpler than in MTG as you get pre-made sets that you can mix and match in a very straightforward manner to build different decks which will all work to a decent extent.
      But yeah it might not just be your thing, in that case fair enough

    • @williamsimkulet7832
      @williamsimkulet7832 4 года назад

      @@mella4376 I'd argue MTG is simpler - You're free to do what you want. Here, it seems they're making you take certain roles (aggressive, leader, etc.), and have certain cards associated with characters. Admittedly, someone unfamiliar with a mtg format might find deck construction daunting ("Where do I begin?"); but if you're going for kitchen table (casual), it's easy enough - look at all your [color] cards, and choose the ones you want to put them in a [color] deck.
      Of course, if you're going for competitive it might be a problem. MTG just announced (ANOTHER!) new format, and my playgroup seems interested. But WOTC hasn't updated gatherer, so it's a bit daunting to metagame for a new format where I'm unfamiliar with the majority of cards.
      Still, even for competitive constructed; I'm free to experiment and explore.

    • @mella4376
      @mella4376 4 года назад +3

      William Simkulet I mean here all you have to do is shuffle one of the colored piles together with your signature cards, and add a handful of neutrals as instructed. In MTG either you buy a pre-made deck or you have just a vast ocean of cards, no idea what your land distribution should be, and no idea how to prioritize any card over any other. If your only criterion is get what looks cool, you can do it here too, if you are meant to think about it (assuming you have a larger Marvel collection than just the core), MTG having basically no rules means deckbuilding is much much harder than something a bit more on rails.
