Having watched countless videos on this game, I have to say that this has got to be the best play through on RUclips. Clear. Concise. Succinct. Well thought out and executed.
Couldn't agree more. I was looking for precisely this sort of content when I started to learn and play the game this weekend. Can't wait to watch all of your playthroughs.
We just bought the game and this is definitely the best video out here to help you learn the game. After watching this I learned what my family was doing wrong for two straight rounds, which both ended in defeat. Thanks Dale!
I have been having so much trouble trying to learn how to play this game (it's my first card game in this style), and this is the first video I've found where it actually make sense! It was helpful to see the "beginner" setup with Spider-Man and the beginner Rhino from beginning to end and your commentary along the way just made everything click. Now I can't wait to try a game myself!
I totally agree with @Nancy on this, this video is on point! I have had to pause the video to make this comment, to say, Dale, you are a champion for putting this video together, it had hit the nail on the head and gone straight into the wood, flush! Solid Delivery, and perfect speed of play, and the way the cards came out is like it's been stacked perfectly to show everything that it has on offer.
Hi Dale, not sure if you still keep up with comments, but thanks so much for this video. I just got into Marvel Champions this week and this is easily the most clear, concise and informative how to play video I've seen.
Just bought this as my first LCG. Read through the rules, had zero idea what I was doing, and came here. Dude, thank you. What a great idea for a channel. You’re a legend 👏👏
As a boardgame publisher and designer myself, I am of the opinion that while the rulebook is thorough and well-organized, it did not explain the core concepts well or in a simple manner.
I've loved your solo play throughs, but every few months I get the urge to break out the game and realized I've forgot how to play, then end up here again. Thank you for this, and for all the previous times I've watched this in the past!
I am just getting into this game and have read and watched several tutorials already and STILL confused until i watched your tutorial. Your pace and playthrough made it so much easier to understand! Appreciate you taking your time to make this for people to learn this game. Can't wait to dive into this game! Thanks man, great tutorial.
There are a few presentation patterns one can use to demonstrate gameplay to help others learn 'how its played' - they all have value. However your videos, especially this one works for me perfectly. Appreciate the straight-to-the-point and focused narration, consistent use of camera closeups on cards.
Not only did the video help tremendously but you also answered so many questions in the comment section! Thanks for the amazing walkthrough video Dale!
I have this game arriving tomorrow. The video was super useful. Many playthroughs go too quickly and assume you know what they're doing. I like how you talk through everything in enough detail to fully understand. Have yourself a new subscriber!
Dale the Casual Gamer I’m having a good game if I only miss a couple small things. Played an entire game without the obligation card for my hero last night!
Sir, you are a life-saver! 💌 I played it all wrong with the rules: 1 - I played only one card/ turn (since in the rulebook they write "playing a card") so I struggled too much for having so few cards on my table. It was so underpowered compared to Rhino armies. 2 - I only flip hero/ alter ego before using Spidey's basic action (so I did not punch Rhino then turn back to Peter for once). That made my game tougher. I lost four matches in a row, 3 with Spidey and 1 with Captain Marvel. I knew there was something wrong... Then I found your video! This is life-saving for me, really!!! I would do a rematch soon, knowing things are much better this way. Thanks a bunch!!! 🙌
I've been binge watching/listening to your playthroughs of different heroes, villains, and scenarios. Thank you for your step by step playthrough as well as notes about mistakes as I just started playing this game 3 days ago and your videos have helped so much! Definitely some rules I'm still figuring out along with timing, but your videos have been a major help! I have quickly become addicted to Marvel Champions!
That was a thematic end. Swinging web kick to the face, likely sending Rhino into a wall and out cold. Sometimes you just got to take crime by the horn and deal with it.
Wow. Have been lying around this game for two years now and just couldn't get into it. Wanted to try it once more with the German language edition and your video has really opened up this game for me. Going to use your series as a tutorial to get into all the heroes - thanks for your great work, perfect job that you've done here...
I love when I find your solo play throughs for the games I want to play next. I feel like yours are some of the best. You get the rules correct so we can learn the game correctly, you have a clear and succinct way of talking through things without a ton of fluff. Very good. Hope you keep up the great work!
@Franz Bazar Wow, thanks! I do my best. Mistakes happen, but I do try to make notes. Hope you enjoy Marvel Champions! It's currently my favorite game. :)
At 24:18 mark, when Rhino goes to attack but is stunned, why don’t you draw a boost card first then nullify the attack from the stun? Thx so much for the awesome step-by-step walkthrough. As others commented, this is by far the best tutorial on how to play!
Hi, great playthrough! I learned a lot from this video. One question at 18:11 though. I thought you suppose to remove Nick Fury after you finish the round but how come you keep it in until the next round?
@Zpsx Js Nick goes away at the end of the turn, but that includes keeping him in for the villain phase to defend with. Hope that helps, and good luck with your game! :)
I tried playing this earlier after sleeving up the starter decks. Man would this video have been helpful. I had no clue you could exhaust and then unexhaust before the villain phase. So I was getting over run. Now I feel like I actually might be able to do something when I pull it out again. Thank you so much!!!!
Great job man! We play all kinds of board games but never play games like this. We just couldn’t wrap our minds around it. Now I’m stoked to play. Cant wait to check out your other vids.
Excellent playthrough. Several others were either too quick and breezed over things I needed to know or were very convoluted and all over the place. Now to go play for the first time!
Very well done! I think you went through the rules, steps, etc. in the right amount. You played at a good pace and still commented on every step and decision you took. And, I think this is the first play of this game I've viewed from other players in which there were no rule errors (I didn't notice any).
Thanks for the kind words, very much appreciated. I've been watching all the other play throughs online since this game was mentioned at GenCon, and have gotten about a dozen plays in so far, but if there aren't any rule errors/honest mistakes, this would probably be my first! :)
I just played my first game and had made it way harder for myself as I had misinterpreted a fair few rules. I should have watched this first as you explained it amazingly well.
Omg thank you for this was so easy to understand and follow. I’ve tried twice to learn this game and get analysis paralysis each time and gave up. Now I feel like I can try again!
Great info, Dale. Three more slightly advanced questions: 1) Do Villains and Minions exhaust when they attack? 2) When a Villain has an attached card and is reduced to zero hit points, does the attachment persevere / continue to be attached (say from phase 1 Rhino to phase 2 Rhino)? 3) When I have a card or thwart ability that removes more than one scheme counter, can I split the removal across more than one scheme. For example, if I have a card or ability that removes 3 scheme counters, and the villain has the Rhino main scheme and the Breakin' and Takin' side scheme in play, could I remove two from a side scheme then one from the main scheme? BTW - this is truly the best RUclips tutorial from this game.
Thanks, much appreciated! 1) They do not exhaust, so you need to remember who attacked you that round ... and encounter cards or other effects can have them attack again (and again, and again). 2) Cards and status effects will stay on the villain when he progresses to the next version. 3) That thwart action only effects one scheme, unless it specifies otherwise. Good luck!!
Thanks, Dale! That was an absolutely terrific video tutorial... Marvel Champions will be my first ever LCG, and thanks to you, I'm beginning to understand it ;)
Thanks, very much appreciated!! My main purpose of making these videos is to teach and show the basics of how to play. Good luck with Marvel Champions!
Great video! My friend and I played tonight. We had things mostly right, with some errors. It's really nice to confirm things we weren't sure about and fix what we did wrong. Thank you!
Great video showing how to play this game. My wife and son bought me the core set this week. I made a lot of mistakes in my first try and have yet get by Rhino with Spider-man yet. Usually beat me due getting 7 on the main scheme. I have played about 4 times so far, but love this game so far. Once I got the hang of taking care of the scheme or keeping it in check, my game was interrupted. I will get him next time. LOL.
I just bought the core set and I am trying to learn to play the game. This is an excellent video and it has really helped me to understand the mechanics better! Thank you!
@Crits Happen The Stunned card gets discarded instead of the attack actually happening, so I get to look forward to the Charge on his next 'actual' attack. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
@@DaletheCasualGamer Thanks, I"ve played that wrong in the past then, I thought the attack had to be declared, thus "happening" or at least "starting" and then Stun kicked in when that was triggered. This helps greatly, thanks!
@@CritsHappen Basically you attempt to attack and the stunned replaces the attack. This also works if an ally is stunned, and they attempt to attack, they exhaust but since it wasn't an attack they dont take the consequential damage. :)
@varun ganti Thanks so much, very much appreciated! I've got lots of other Marvel Champions playthroughs too, and try to post a new play every Monday. Hope you enjoy! :)
What brand of card sleeves do you use? They appear to be sturdy. Also, they way you explain things is great. Recently purchased this game and your videos have helped me learn how to play with each character.
@Tyler Arvin Thanks! At the time of this video I was using Fantasy Flight Games sleeves (which have since been discontinued). Now I'm using Dragon Shield clear matte sleeves. Happy gaming! :)
Thanks so much for this! I'm not usually into these sort of games, but I bought this for my brother on a recommendation and have been trying to learn how to play so we can play together. After watching this, I think I actually understand how to now! Well done (:
2 questions regarding encounters and side schemes. If there is a side scheme that appears in the encounter phase with the +1 encounter card on it. Do you draw another encounter card that same turn? Or does it only apply in the next villain phase. And second, is there a maximum of encounter cards a player draws in 1 turn? Example: in your turn your deck runs out and there is a scheme with the +1 encounter in play already. Would you draw 3 encounter cards in the villain phase?
@adam valentino Thanks for watching! Side schemes that have you draw additional encounter cards only activates during the step 3 of the villain phase (dealing encounter cards to players). And there is no maximum number of encounter cards to draw ... so deal with those nasty side schemes as soon as possible! :) Hope that helps, and good luck!
Thanks for the video - I did my first play though this evening, and found this video to review the rules of my play though. The pacing and explanations are great. I had a question regarding the play of the Nick Fury card - I think perhaps that he should of been exhausted after attacking? And then he shouldn’t of been able to thwart because he should of left play at the end of the villain round ? Let me know what you think here. I’m enjoying the game so far.
Thanks! And glad the video was helpful. When Nick Fury comes into play, you get to choose from 3 different options, and then you can still thwart or attack with him again ... and then use him to defend. Very good card!! Hope that helps.
@@DaletheCasualGamer This really helped me as I had been removing Nick at the end of the player phase thinking that was the end of the round! Forgot that the next Villian phase is still the current round!
Hey, Dale! You do a fantastic job with your videos. Thanks so much. At around 22:57, since Spidey has Confused on him, should he be able to make that attack or would it have to wait until next round? Probably not a dealbreaker, but just wanted to clarify. I played MC earlier on, then I got going with Arkham Horror LCG and haven’t played MC in awhile. My son told me yesterday that he got a copy of MC for him to try with HIS son, but he decided after reading the rulebook that he would let Grandpa teach that one. 😛 Since that’s me, I watched your video as a refresher and thought I should ask my question before they’re ready to try it. 😉 Thanks. You are a wonderful resource for the boardgame community.
@Dan Conley Thanks for watching! :) Confused on the hero will only prevent any "thwarting" actions, so safe to attack. And likewise, being stunned will prevent any "attacking" but safe to thwart. Now being stunned and confused ... that's a problem. Hope that helps. :)
Aaand I think I just found the answer. 🙄 Confused appears to only apply to Thwart attempts. So here’s a followup: if I get the status card in Alter-ego form, it stays with me when I switch to Spidey, right? Thanks!
@@DaletheCasualGamer Thank you, good sir, for the lightning-fast replies. You got back to me with the first answer before I could even look it up! 😳 Hoping this one makes a hit with the family. Thanks again.
Max 1 per player is not a deck building restriction. That only means that if you have one in play you can’t play another one until the one in play is gone. The cards that are restricted to deck building are the ones that say max 1 per deck.
Thanks for watching! You are correct, but only on rare occasions would I recommend putting additional cards in your deck that couldn't be played, especially now with all the cards available. :) How have you been enjoying the game, and who is your favorite hero?
Dale the Casual Gamer love the game. I enjoyed your how to play. Helped me teach others the game. I’m pretty one sided to Spider-Man since he is my favorite hero from marvel.
Man your tutorial walkthroughs are perfect. I've watched some tutorials about some board games but usually I end up confused. Yours on the other hand are so easy to understand and clear that one video is enough for me to get it. Btw. What happens during the phase of the villain when he has attack but there are two or more players? Also, have you ever made a solo video about the spirecrest expansion for Everdell?
@Ponczos_22 Thanks, very much appreciated! When the villain activates, he will activate separately against every character (I have plenty more videos of Marvel Champions playing with 2 characters). As for Everdell, all I did was the core box. Did not pick up any of the expansion for that game. Happy gaming!
@Michael Lao I was using Fantasy Flight sleeves at the time of this video, but I now use Dragon Shield clear matte sleeves. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Great video! One question, around 24:25 when hydra bomber revealed, other than dealing 2 damage, does he atk for 1 as well? or minions doesn’t atk on their revealed turn? Thank you
Thanks for watching! The villain and minions typically only attack during a certain phase, not when cards are revealed. Hope that helps, and good luck!
Great video, thanks for that. But I have one question. At Min 11:08 you use Spider-man action (attack), flip (in exhaust mode) and then use the Alter Ego ability? I found it a bit confusing that you are allowed to do that? But I guess you can still do the Abilitys (but not his Recover action).
Sorry Dale - but few more questions for you: 1) Do cards that have either the Hero Action indicator force the Hero to Exhaust? 2) Can you also apply an incremental Hero Action (thwart) to a Hero that is already Exhausted due to a thwart? Said differently, can you thwart (or attack) and Exhaust more than once on your turn? 3) If you have a Hero, he attacks then exhausts. You then play a card that readies the Hero - can you then immediately attack (or Thwart) once again on that same turn? 4) Same question for Defense - can you Defend more than once assuming you have the ability to ready the Hero?
No problem! 1. Cards with "Hero Action" do not exhaust your hero, you just need to be in hero form to do the action. 2. If you're hero is already exhausted, you cannot do other actions that would cause the hero to exhaust. 3. Yes, once ready, your hero can attack or thwart again. 4. Yes. Hope that helps!
Great instructional video. This is my first time trying this sort of card game and without your video I probably would have given up trying to play. Thanks so much and subscribed!
Brilliant Video Dale, just picked this up myself and just started playing. This certainly cleared things up a bit. Shall check out your other vids ! =)
Thanks so much for this video. Quick questions though please. Right at the beginning, when you removed the four justice cards. Did you really need to do that? You could have kept them in your deck and used them for their resources? No?
@Nicholas Boudreau Thanks for watching. At the beginning of the game you are allowed a "mulligan" where you can discard cards from your initial hand and then draw that many more to create your starting hand for the game. Hope that helps! Happy gaming!
Thank you for making this! I'm hopefully gonna get this for xmas and having never played a card game like this before (outside of Pokemon... if that is even still a thing) this was a great example walking us through the basics. I'll be watching this several more times for sure 🤣
18:47 You had to discard Nick fury right? Great video I just bought this game and I'm trying to learn and I noticed that you did not discarded Nick was a mistake? Again great video!
Nick stays in until the end of the turn, which is after the villain phase. So he is good to come in during the hero phase, attack or thwart then hang around for the villain phase to defend. Hope that helps, and happy gaming! :)
I may have missed it, but I have 2 questions: 1) Do Heroes and Allies exhaust when they attack, defend or thwart? 2) How do you defeat or eliminate a side scheme?
@Andy Kiss Hello! 1) Yes, heroes and allies will exhaust when they attack, thwart or defend. 2) Side schemes are defeated by thwarting. Hope that helps, and good luck!!
It will be discarded. Potentially coming up again, if you go through the encounter deck or brought back from another card effect. There's a lot to remember getting started in this game, but after a couple plays the game will flow better. (a lot like playing drums) :)
@Last Minute Plans Some cards, abilities, or removing villain attachments do require specific resources ... but yes, most of the time it the resource type doesn't matter.
@@DaletheCasualGamer Yup, this is the Marvel Game I have been waiting a long time for - Marvel Legendary just doesn't compare to actually getting to be Spidey which was all I wanted all along!
Can you flip the character card once you use the passive ability? For example, if you started the round in alter ego form as Peter Parker, could you get the free mental resource from his ability then flip his card to hero side as Spider man?
Having watched countless videos on this game, I have to say that this has got to be the best play through on RUclips. Clear. Concise. Succinct. Well thought out and executed.

Great video! My friend and I played tonight. We had things mostly right, with some errors. It's really nice to confirm things we weren't sure about and fix what we did wrong. Thank you!
Excellent! I agree with others here that this was not just a great playthrough, but an excellent tutorial.
Thanks for watching, and happy gaming! :)
LOL.
@Hockeyfan76 Welcome to the world of Marvel Champions! I'm sure you'll get Rhino next time! Happy gaming. :)
Dale, thanks so much for this. I just bought the game and you're video is an excellent way to learn it.
Glad to help you learn, and hope you have some great plays! :)
Thanks for this. It’s the most helpful video on learning this game. It cleared up a few difficulties I was having with the rules.
Glad it helped, and happy gaming! :)
That was brilliant! I got the game for Christmas to play with my son, this video was everything I needed it to be.
@DGBJJ Hope you and your son are doing well taking on the villains!! :)
Your videos have helped me so much in learning all these games. Thank you!
Glad to help, and happy gaming! :)
I just bought the core set and I am trying to learn to play the game. This is an excellent video and it has really helped me to understand the mechanics better! Thank you!
@Joshua Camper Glad it helped, and good luck with your new game! :)
You did a great job showing and explaining how to play! Even my fiance understood! Thanks!
MARVELOUS guide VIDEO,
@24:20 would Charge not be discarded as the attack happens, but is prevented by the Stun?
I have to chime in as well. This was a brilliant play through.
Thanks! Always appreciated! Hope you are enjoying your game!
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing!!
Cesar A. Thanks for watching!!
Absolutely Phenomenal Play-through!
@varun ganti Thanks so much, very much appreciated! I've got lots of other Marvel Champions playthroughs too, and try to post a new play every Monday. Hope you enjoy! :)
I really enjoyed this. It would be great to play as smoothly and quickly as you do.
I am more interested in buying this game now.
Thanks.
@John Matthews Thanks, very much appreciated ... and hope you enjoy the game!! :)
Fantastic playthrough, smooth and well done. Just picked up the game and can't wait to play...awesome job, got my sub!
@J P Hope you enjoy as much as I have! And thanks for watching and the sub! Much appreciated. :)
Just bought the game this weekend and your play through was a lot of help. Thanks!!
@Kendall Sorensen Glad the video helped, and welcome to the world of Marvel Champions!!
I dunno of anyone has ever asked you this, but what are the sleeves you use for MC?
Now I use Dragon Shield clear matte sleeves, but originally Fantasy Flight Sleeves which have been discontinued.
Great explanation. Would have been nice to see your hand on display (which cards you had) more often though.
Thanks so much for this! I'm not usually into these sort of games, but I bought this for my brother on a recommendation and have been trying to learn how to play so we can play together. After watching this, I think I actually understand how to now! Well done (:
@Hope Thanks for watching, and glad the video helped! Good luck with the team-up with your brother against the villains! :)
Hope that helps, and good luck!
Great video. Helped a ton. What sleeves do you use. They looked perfect.
Thanks and I’m glad the video helped! I use Fantasy Flight sleeves. Happy gaming!
Thanks. You are a wonderful resource for the boardgame community.
@Dan Conley Thanks for watching! :)
Confused on the hero will only prevent any "thwarting" actions, so safe to attack.
Thanks!
@@playdead1414 Sure does! Good luck, and happy gaming! :)
How have you been enjoying the game, and who is your favorite hero?
Dale the Casual Gamer love the game. I enjoyed your how to play. Helped me teach others the game. I’m pretty one sided to Spider-Man since he is my favorite hero from marvel.
Spider-Man is my favorite too ... or is it Captain America, ... no it's definitely Spider-Man. Haha, I just can't decide. :)
Dale the Casual Gamer just too good not to play Spider-Man. He is sort of an all round type of character for the game.
Great playthrough. Ive just started yesterday and youve showed me some things that ive overlooked! Thanks!
Glad I could help, and good luck taking on the villains!! :)
Omg thank you so much for this, you honestly helped me grasp the game so well and I really enjoy it now, Thank you!
@Kira Dread You are welcome, and good luck with your Marvel Champions games!! :)
Has a new player, thank you for this clear and informative video!
Nice vid! What sleeves are you using btw?
@Michael Lao I was using Fantasy Flight sleeves at the time of this video, but I now use Dragon Shield clear matte sleeves. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
@@DaletheCasualGamer thanks, I too also use the dragon shield clear mattes 👍
Great video. It seems to benefit someone that has read the rulebook but not played a game yet.
@Leias Play Time Thanks for visiting the channel!
@Marc Sodermanns Correct, you can use abilities and play cards from your hand while exhausted. Hope that helps, and happy gaming! :)
Sorry Dale - but few more questions for you:
1) Do cards that have either the Hero Action indicator force the Hero to Exhaust?
Hello I know this is an old video but why at 24:22 did you deal a 2nd encounter card?
Great instructional video. This is my first time trying this sort of card game and without your video I probably would have given up trying to play. Thanks so much and subscribed!
@kindredspiritm Thanks, and I’m glad the video helped! Good luck in your Marvel Champions games! :)
Great run through, this one actually had the best tutorial.
Wow, thanks! Hope you are enjoying the game!!
@@DaletheCasualGamer Having a blast with it, easy to set up when I want a quick game of something after work.
Thank you! Learning the game and this answered a lot of questions.
@James Durney Thanks for watching, and good luck in your game! Have fun! :)
Thank you for the walk through. Very helpful.
Maybe do a walk through with commentary on why you chose which card?
Brilliant Video Dale, just picked this up myself and just started playing. This certainly cleared things up a bit. Shall check out your other vids ! =)
Thanks so much, and hope you continue to enjoy the game!! :)
Hope you get some great games over the holidays, and happy gaming!! :)
great play through sir!
@TandaTen Thanks for watching! :)
Terrific tutorial. I'm just getting started and this is still very relevant.
@Nick Hansen Thanks for watching, and welcome to Marvel Champions! :)
very good runthrough game mechanics and easy to follow. I think I got a good grasp of the rules to play this. Going to grab a copy now!
@VasThePirate Glad it helped, and I hope you enjoy the game!! :)
Ok ok thanks man!!
Can the backflip be used during the villain phase when the villain attacks
Yes. In general, "Interrupt" cards can be used whenever the text triggers. Hope that helps, and happy gaming!
Yet another excellent walkthrough.
@J Snel Thanks for watching! :)
revisiting this vid really helps on the sequence of phases/actions. really helpful! thanks dale and keep it up!
Thanks for watching! :)
This was a fantastic tutorial playthrough! Thanks!
@boardgamesandbrews Thanks, very much appreciated! :)
Great video! Are those just business card holders for your villain dashboard, or are they something custom?
I may have missed it, but I have 2 questions: 1) Do Heroes and Allies exhaust when they attack, defend or thwart? 2) How do you defeat or eliminate a side scheme?
@Andy Kiss Hello! 1) Yes, heroes and allies will exhaust when they attack, thwart or defend. 2) Side schemes are defeated by thwarting. Hope that helps, and good luck!!
So a side scheme with zero Threat tokens is discarded or removed from game?
It will be discarded. Potentially coming up again, if you go through the encounter deck or brought back from another card effect.
There's a lot to remember getting started in this game, but after a couple plays the game will flow better. (a lot like playing drums) :)
Great demo and explanation of how to play - gonna get the decks out tomorrow after about 9 months
@Neal Barton Thanks for watching, and Good luck!!
I have a question. What's the point of having a specific resource like energy or mental if we use them all together as if it doesn't matter. Help
@Last Minute Plans Some cards, abilities, or removing villain attachments do require specific resources ... but yes, most of the time it the resource type doesn't matter.
Great video, this helped me greatly in both deciding to buy this game as well as learning it or any game play questions I had.
Thanks, and glad I could help! Hope your having fun!
@@DaletheCasualGamer Yup, this is the Marvel Game I have been waiting a long time for - Marvel Legendary just doesn't compare to actually getting to be Spidey which was all I wanted all along!
Agreed. I love Legendary, but you never felt like the "hero". Champions definitely feels like you have the super powers in your actions. :)
Can you flip the character card once you use the passive ability? For example, if you started the round in alter ego form as Peter Parker, could you get the free mental resource from his ability then flip his card to hero side as Spider man?
Phenomenal video. Really appreciated, and really well done.
@Jake Speed Thanks, very much appreciated! :)
