Thank you for giving the name of the game right away for each entry! It isn't the most fun to have to listen to five minutes of backstory before the actual entry is given like in a lot of lists. Kudos, and great list!
I agree. I enjoy the banter of Dice Tower, but I find myself hovering over the timeline to get a preview of the game, because a lot of time it's more annoying than exciting to draw it out.
After over 200+ games of Dune Imperium - and at least 20 with the Immortality expansion - I would not say this expansion is optional, I would say its mandatory. Grafting opens mind-shattering number of combos where things that are usually impossible happen if you're smart enough to see it. It rewards smart play of interlinked effects way more than IX does. Optional card buying from Tleilaxu deck lets you fire up crazy engines early. It's a must have for sure, especially for experienced groups.
You seem to like a lot of area control games, so you should definitely try Inis! It's not as fighty as some others like Kemet, but it adds a really neat drafting mechanic to choose which actions you are gonna be able to do each round which gives it a lot of replayability and depth of strategy.
Yes! INIS the goat of area control where anything can still happen and everyone has still a shot at victory till the last action. Tense and full of shifts and turns.
Love the mention of Scythe and Codenames, I got a friend who has gone through Gloomhaven IRL and is currently going through Frosthaven. They're insane. Wingspan, Carcassonne, and Agricola would be on my list.
Pax Pamir 2nd Edition might be right up your alley: influence in coalitions, each victory point is a grind, opportunistic card play, best at 3-5 players who know what they're doing, steep learning curve, and a very nice edition on top of that.
This is the first video I've seen by you. I like how you give the entries quickly and expand upon them. Also I know I'm late but Dominion is a phenomenal game.

I feel like you would really like moonrakers. Its a pretty classic deckbuilder where you go on missions by plqying cards. But usually the quests are too hard to do on your own so you have to invite your oponents to come along and help. To do this you have to negotiate how you are going to share the rewards. I feel like since you seem to like social games and you love deck builders it would be a huge hit.
Fantastic list. Dune: Imperium is definitely my #1, Everdell my #2, and Ark Nova my #3. But every game you listed would beon a list of my top 20 of all time.
Lol love your commitment to self-confidence! You really went all in on the “this is the best” top 10 and it made me all the more excited to watch! Great vid and good top 10!
Excellent list. I just started getting into the hobby recently, and I have Kemet, Scythe, Gloomhaven (Jaws of the Lion), Nemesis, and I just played Blood rage on TTS for the first time the other day. It's safe to say it seems like we have a lot of overlap in games we like. Thanks for the list, looking forward to see new content!!
Just discovered the channel. Normally these top ten videos means I have to buy a stack of games. But here. Perhaps only the Dune Imperium Rise of Ix expansion. Nice video.
Those are really fun board games. However one painpoint I always got into is, the game has so complex rules to learn, but it usually won’t take more than 4 or 5 game play before friends get fed up with them
Man, don't sweat putting popular choices on your list. Nemesis is one of my very best games. They are popular for a reason. I saw someone call Ark Nova the current pinnacle of board game evolution earlier this year. Great list! (I really need to play Scythe... it's been on my shelf for years...)
Finally got around to it myself late last year. It isn't as combaty (but yes, thers is combat) as he describes. It has more of a cold war feel. Still, it is really fun. I'm hoping to break into the Rise of Fenris expansion some time this year.
What a top 10 list! Glad you told me to lie down before watching! You definitely have a wide variety of games you included. Any experience with Tapestry or Spirit Island? I just joined your discord and would be happy to teach if you've never played either!
Thank you for this fantastic video! Actually, while speaking about Gloomhaven, you showed some shots of your playthrough, but I cannot find any Gloomhaven videos on your channel. Have you published it anywhere (probably, on another channel I'm not aware of)? Would be interesting to watch such a video
Thank you! I just recorded that to have a little b-roll for the video and test how I would do it if I did start a Gloomhaven playthrough for the channel. Good to hear there’s interest!
I saw you once discussing the no. 1 board games pf several well known bg youtubers and saw this. Then I saw your channel timeline tag saying “I play board games”. Subscribed 😅😂.
I own both the physical and digital version (and pretty much everything *Haven, including Frosthaven, which I've yet to crack open). The digital version is a fantastic recreation of the physical version. Highly recommend.
Gloomhaven was a disappointment due to it more puzzle like nature for a dungeon crawler. I wanted more of a smash door down, kill everything in the room, and take their stuff. As for Nemesis, I didn't like that you could potentially die in the 1st turn so you can end up waiting for the rest to finish the game. Also I wasn't too big on the semi co-op, where your hidden objective can screw another player.
Kemet was the first game I played when I got into modern board gaming and it’s still one of my favorites. If I had to throw out a top ten, I’d go with (in no particular order); - Ark Nova. - DUNE Imperium - Orleans - Pulsar 2849 - BattleLore - Dominare - Anachrony - Teotihuacan - Alien Frontiers - Summoner Wars
Can Uprising replace your first game? I knew your number 1 before I watched because I studied the game in Uprising and watched your video. You put so much effort into explaining the game.
Good list. Have you tried Lost Ruins of Arnak? Also knowing how, like me. You love the tightness of Dune:Imperium I'd suggest other vlaada chvatil games besides codenames (a great game but very different from his other designs) I'd highly suggest Dungeon Lords (his tightest) but Mage Knight is great stuff and a clear influence on Childres' Gloomhaven. Or his most popular game Through the Ages a beautiful abstract civilization game
We seem to have similar taste in games. I'd recommend Great Western Trail, Brass: Lancashire, and Eclipse: Second Dawn of the Galaxy if you haven't played them.
Just fyi I think the optimum time to release videos for best initial impact is 1pm GMT or thereabouts. It encompasses the majority of the world being awake.
My personal favorite game is called Fallen Land. It is a post apocalyptic sand box style deck builder with mini stories. It has great artwork and the stories are top notch. It does take aup a fair amount of table space and the time to play can be quite long but the ever changing replayability makes it worth bringing out every few months. 2nd Edition will hopefully be out later this year.
Decent list. My top 10: 10. Mare Nostrum: Empires 9. Ra 8. Mosaic: A Story of Civilization 7. Concordia 6. Rising Sun 5. Empires: Age of Discovery 4. Anno 1800 3. Underwater Cities 2. Castles of Burgundy 1. Ark Nova
Great list, some of my favs also. Have you tried Lacrimosa? It's a deck modifier with a fun action selection mechanism. There are several avenues to victory.
The games Ive played the most with my friends are probably Blokus, A Game of Thrones the boardgame and Agricola. But Dune Rise of Ix is fast becomming our new favorite.
Hi Mate, rikky from byron bay australia here, Loooove dune too.....but my second and maybe first chocie for great board games...WAR OF THE RING...wow..expansions and paint jobs and the large delux play matt make this VERY hard to beat...your thoughts?
Have you played Root and Terraforming Mars (W/ prelude)? With my housemates we thoroughly enjoyed Bloodrage but those games pulled us away from it.. until we found Dune: Imperium which is gradually becoming our lives (worth it)
Hi. I really liked the flow of your talking, the jokes and the video in generall, its just I somehow have a completely different board game taste. The only game at your list that I find cool is blood rage, (and dune is also ok-ish in my books), but there are so much cooler games out there!) For comparison: My list would look like the following: 10.Root, 9.Blood Rage, 8. Pagan Fate of Roanoke, 7.Hive, 6. Trickerion, 5. Santorini, 4. Gaia Projekt, 3. Stationfall, 2. Spirit Island, 1. Age of Innovation
This response may be too late but I have both Lockdown and the original Nemesis. I love the original and may be in the minority on this but I don't like Lockdown quite as much. It adds some mechanics like light/dark an elevator and some other stuff. I cannot recommend the original highly enough but some people seem to prefer Lockdown.
Oh wow I love so many of the games here, Air Land & Sea is the one which surprised me the most! I love it, I played it a lot with my gf, also the expansion... I found only a bit frustrating, after a long time, the advantage the second player has
Also codenames! We have pretty much the same taste! Haven't tried Kemet or Blood Rage but I love many similar games (Rising Sun, Eclipse, Inis, Root...)
Dune, Ark Nova, Terramorphic Mars, Catan, Carcasstone, Star Wars Rebellion, Tyrants of the Underdark, Castles of Burgundy, Splendor, Ticket to Ride - Europe. Edit; Clank. We need to fit Clank somewhere on that top 10. I dont care how.
@@orski78 I think you'd really love Clank, not least of all because the designer brought so much of it's DNA to Dune: Imperium. Original Clank is the most basic but still good, Clank in Space has more complexity (maybe too much), Clank Catacombs is the newest and really cool, and Clank Legacy is one of the best received legacy games of all time. Hope to see a video on one eventually!
I'd agree that your top 10 list is the best if MY top 10 list wasn't the best. So you did some flagrant lying! My top 10 (the definitive top 10 for everyone), in no particular order, because that changes seemingly by day of the week: - *haven (Gloomhaven, Jaws of the Lion, Frosthaven, Crimson Scales... the whole series) - Cosmic Encounter - Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition - Lords of Vegas - Level 7: Omega Protocol - Manhattan Project - Dead of Winter - Battlecon - Chaos in the Old World - Battlestar Galactica I actually own Nemesis, Ark Nova and Blood Rage from your list, and have not played any of them yet, so my position may change (I have a ton of games, but don't get to play nearly enough)
Great list - Scythe, Blood Rage, Dune 👍 my all time favourite and maybe you don't know it: Terra Mystica (I played Terra Mystica 80 to 100 times and still love it)
2 question , i love scythe and i think blood rage is very similar to ot. Right ? Or these are very different.? I dont want have 2 similar board game In scythe we have alot of possibilities , blood rage has it too ?
@@amirdavoodi2131 Scythe and Blood Rage are different - I would call Blood Rage a brutal game ;-) brutal in its game mechanic Scythe is more a Euro game you can buy both, both are great!
My favorite games are dunne the latest remake, wingspan, Arkham horror board game, avalon hill titan, tzolkin, avalon hill advanced civilization, L2 design group Bitter woods, fortress Europe, russia besieged, blockade runner, game of thrones, star trek ascendancy, stone age +, Acquire, stock ticker, S.P.I. sword and sorcery.😊
You have very simillar taste to mine. I would rank Kemet, Blood Rage, El Dorado and of course D:I in my top10 as well. I urge you to try out (If you havent already) Space Gate Odyssey, Dominant Species, Witchstone, Neuroshima Hex! 3.0, Barrage and Skymines.
I must say, I'm dumbfounded by Dune: Imperium. Absolutely can't believe it made the list... But, more seriously, very solid list. Some games I need to play. And then some I also enjoy a lot.
Heh... as soon as I saw Kemet on you list I knew Blood Rage would also be on the list. Yes... the digital Gloomhaven is the way to go. I love... love... LOVE the board game... but we would meet like every two weeks to play and half the time was spend once again figuring out how monsters worked... plus remembering conditions and what elements were present. The digital game takes care of all of that.
Isn't a digital edition (gloomhaven) a videogame at this point? I would not consider it the same as the other boardgames in this top ten if you don't play it on a table. Just my thoughts...
I made my own little list 10 Ark Nova 9 CLANK! 8 Mille Bornes 7 Quacks of Quedlinburg 6 Ra 5 The Crew: Mission Deep Sea 4 Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition 3 Magic: the Gathering 2 Riichi Mahjong 1 Dune Imperium Love to see you play any of these Totally agree that Dune needs Ix. I never teach it without it.
I align quite a bit with your top 10. I do love some dudes on a map games! Have you tried Cyclades? I go back and forth whether I like it more than Kemet or not, but they're both fantastic in my book.
I predict that Ark Nova will be superceded by The Flood. Same theme, but not Euro-y or complicated. Air Land & Sea: I prefer Star Wars Empire vs Rebellion, it's a reskin of CIA vs KGB. A simple 2 player with 5 strategy cards to pick from. This game will be superceded by the new Star Wars Deckbuilding game! Dune Imperium: I have ALL the deluxefied stuff for this game and I LOVE it!....But! It is not as immersive as classic DUNE, from GF9. Think Twilight Imperium in the Dune universe and doesn't go as long! But just harder to get players for. The strategies and tactics are deep and complex but not overly complicated. It just FEELS like ur one of the Houses! You must also try playing IKUSA, Senji, Yedo, Shogun(Queen Games) Diplomacy AND Ninjato. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Kickstarter release of the games Unsettled, Voidfall, Solar 175, Small Samurai Empires, Trailblazer: The John Muir Trail, Lying Pirates, Senjutsu, Terraforming Mars Dice Game and Dune: War For Arrakis!
Idk I sometimes like to try to guess what it is based on their description.
Play at 0.75 speed for normal speed :)
Much needed
I think the speed is good
I still sped it up
That was better 😅
I played it at 2x speed lol
You seem to like a lot of area control games, so you should definitely try Inis! It's not as fighty as some others like Kemet, but it adds a really neat drafting mechanic to choose which actions you are gonna be able to do each round which gives it a lot of replayability and depth of strategy.
100% agree. Cyclades will also be a good one to try out for you.
Tbh blood rage is so far ahead of those especially with expansions
Inis is my 1 game of all time, I’ll never say no to a game it’s so tactical but never causes arguments
Yes! INIS the goat of area control where anything can still happen and everyone has still a shot at victory till the last action. Tense and full of shifts and turns.

Hello, great list .. I have a question .. what is the game on the video cover... Looks like an island ...
Love your commentary on these videos!
Glad you like them!
Thanks for sharing your list! I’ve been wanting to try Gloomhaven and didn’t even realize there was a digital version. Also need to try Nemesis now.

I think Scythe would be on the Dieselpunk genre, an alternate history wherein the industrial revolution happened way earlier than in reality.
That intro was amazing!
Clever, interesting, funny video I thoroughly enjoyed. First twenty seconds had me rolling!🤣
Have you played Dune (the 2019 version from gale force 9)? If not you should check it out. It's very unique and a lot of fun
Dieselpunk usually covers the first half of the 20th century. Steampunk is Victorian era. Scythe is a good game!
Kemet was the first game I played when I got into modern board gaming and it’s still one of my favorites.
If I had to throw out a top ten, I’d go with (in no particular order);
- Ark Nova.
- DUNE Imperium
- Orleans
- Pulsar 2849
- BattleLore
- Dominare
- Anachrony
- Teotihuacan
- Alien Frontiers
- Summoner Wars
Can Uprising replace your first game?
I knew your number 1 before I watched because I studied the game in Uprising and watched your video. You put so much effort into explaining the game.
Seems like we have the same taste for boardgames, subscribed
Love Nemesis-just painting them all up. I also love Deep Madness, folklore the affliction and C-DMD.
Good list. Have you tried Lost Ruins of Arnak?
Also knowing how, like me. You love the tightness of Dune:Imperium I'd suggest other vlaada chvatil games besides codenames (a great game but very different from his other designs)
I'd highly suggest Dungeon Lords (his tightest) but Mage Knight is great stuff and a clear influence on Childres' Gloomhaven. Or his most popular game Through the Ages a beautiful abstract civilization game
100% agree on Nemesis: A Masterpiece! There's no other boardgame experience like it. My nr 1.
excellent recommendations!!
What game is in the thumbnail,
We seem to have similar taste in games. I'd recommend Great Western Trail, Brass: Lancashire, and Eclipse: Second Dawn of the Galaxy if you haven't played them.

2 question , i love scythe and i think blood rage is very similar to ot. Right ? Or these are very different.? I dont want have 2 similar board game
In scythe we have alot of possibilities , blood rage has it too ?
@@amirdavoodi2131 Scythe and Blood Rage are different - I would call Blood Rage a brutal game ;-) brutal in its game mechanic
Scythe is more a Euro game
you can buy both, both are great!
Great list!
3.0, Barrage and Skymines.
im just happy to see catan on any top 10 list.
Have you checked out oathsworn?
Marvel Dice Throne and Dune are my favorites
Crossing my fingers for a season 2 for Marvel Dice Throne as well as its own adventure game expansion.
Good Choices! But clearly you haven’t played Mansions of Madness or Cthulhu: Death May Die. 🙂
Have you played tyrants of the underdark?
What game is pictured in your thumbnail? I was waiting for it and it never showed up.
A. I. GENERATED
@@salsabuster Have you played it?
No, because it doesn't exist
@@salsabuster Hardly an excuse.
yes yes that's all well and good, but what is the game in the thumbnail??
Thoughts on spirit island?
Dune is in my top 3 ,too
Do u try too many bones ?
Isn't a digital edition (gloomhaven) a videogame at this point? I would not consider it the same as the other boardgames in this top ten if you don't play it on a table. Just my thoughts...
What are your thoughts about Kemet: Blood and Sand as compared to original Kemet?
It’s great! I prefer it to the original - that’s the only version we’ve been playing these days
What game is the screen cap before opening the video?
I made my own little list
10 Ark Nova
9 CLANK!
8 Mille Bornes
7 Quacks of Quedlinburg
6 Ra
5 The Crew: Mission Deep Sea
4 Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition
3 Magic: the Gathering
2 Riichi Mahjong
1 Dune Imperium
Love to see you play any of these
Totally agree that Dune needs Ix. I never teach it without it.
Seems like great list! I've really been meaning to try CLANK! and Quacks... I've heard they're awesome
I align quite a bit with your top 10. I do love some dudes on a map games! Have you tried Cyclades? I go back and forth whether I like it more than Kemet or not, but they're both fantastic in my book.
Weak list. But..100 people, 100 tastes..
What is the game on the video cover?
i've never had a good time with blood rage or any stonemeier game, but good list overall!
