The 2023 Hummer SUV Is As Stupid As The Truck... And That's Fantastic

  • The new electric Hummers are the ultimate in conspicuous electric consumption. They are epic, insane, fantastic, stupid, and so much more all at the same time. This is the EV that nobody needs, but secretly a decent share of EV and ICE buyers want, and that's kind of the point. If you want to save the planet and reduce your emissions and consumption, buy a small battery EV. The Hummer's mission is to convince that guy we all know that's rolling coal to try swapping into a bonkers-crazy Hummer SUV or truck instead. This isn't for everyone, and arguably it's a "great idea" but for those that can afford it, it's on sale now!

    At 1.4 miles/kWh that's only 12 cents per mile where I live (central VA, USA), 50% cheaper than a diesel truck. Not too bad if you buy it as a business tax write-off.

      If 1.4 is the official estimate, it will be much lower for short drives and cold weather. Official numbers are really only good for road trip range estimates for EVs.

    I think the logic of this Hummer just came to me. If you're the person who is shopping for a Bronco Raptor (R or not), then this may be a good SUV to cross shop. I also prefer this version to their truck. As an aside, earlier in the video, some of the lighting made you look like you grew out a stache Alex. I was amazed and then things cleared up and I was sadly confused.

    I hope I'm not the minority when I say this, but I am really quite disappointed in the demand for these gigantic SUV's/trucks. Despite the slew of safety features they have, these are still dangerous tanks to be putting in the hands of any consumer than can afford one. From driving around in a mazda3 it genuinely frightens me to see more and more massive trucks zooming around me.
    And lets be honest, the average truck buyer doesn't need more than a Maverick or Tacoma, even Alex has stated this in the past.
    Nevertheless, great video as always!

    Good video. There is a limit to regen braking based on battery temperature and battery percentage. Obviously, at 100% charge the BMS cannot allow regen. If there is a lot of regen going on (downhill) the BMS has to maintain battery temp and that could limit the amount of regen. That said, I think I like the Hummer approach of blended braking. Regarding efficiency, it is no different than large ICE engines. Typically, I would think that someone who can afford one of these to just have fun, can afford the “lack” of efficiency. As a car salesman once told my Day who was looking at Cadillac when he was a teenager - “If you have to worry about the cost of gas, then you can’t afford this car”.

    What is the point of these vehicles? At 9K# it wears out roads and tires, and with this much mass it can be a threat to others on the road. All electric cars are so heavy and may cause a need redesign everything (safety rails, bridges, paved surfaces, parking garages, etc) for safety and other standards. The range may work for some people and businesses, but is this really saving any resources or is it just a lot of fun in the guise of saving the planet?

    I’m sure I’m in the minority here but why is it necessary for every EV to go 0-60 in 3-4 seconds. Anything above 4 is now referred to as slow or adequate by most reviewers. Somehow we’ve been very happy with ICE vehicles for years and considered them fast when they did it on 5-6 seconds. How many more EV’s could we make with the same recourses if they didn’t have to be so insanely fast. It’s not like anyone can actually use that speed in the real world not to mention the fact that you’ll get crap for range if you did use it all the time. We have Tesla to thank for this I suppose.

    • @protovack
      @protovack Год назад +2

      it isn't necessary, it's just a given. the larger the battery, the more power available. and even then, the fastest EVs are still artificially power limited. so yes, you could artificially limit the power available to whatever you want. Some EVs have a teen driver mode, for example, that only allows 30-40% power, which is reasonable for a new driver. Remember, the power is "free" in an EV, just by virtue of having large batteries. Even a modest 50-60kwh battery pack is capable of incredible power output, far more than would ever be required by a vehicle sized to use such a battery. and so every EV is artificially power limited.

    • @BrandonG8Man
      @BrandonG8Man Год назад +1

      @@protovack My comment wasn’t really aimed at the safety aspect. It was more at the efficiency aspect. Smaller electric motors giving 0-60 in say the 5.5-6.5 second range instead of 3-4 seconds would enable the same range from smaller battery packs allowing more vehicles to be built using the same amount of raw materials. Tesla started it as a means to grab attention for their new vehicles when first entering the market and since then everyone else has to match it or they’re derided as “slow”.

    • @protovack
      @protovack Год назад +1

      @@BrandonG8Man it just physics. larger electric motors are more efficient than smaller ones, all else held equal. miniaturizing the motors doesn't actually give much of a benefit. so there is a sweetspot combining size, efficiency, torque handling, etc, and that's the size of most current EV motors. there is no conceivable reason to try and alter that. it's already been figured out, and with a standard size battery pack, they're just damn powerful. no way around it except by artificial nerfing.

    The Hummer has always been stupid. Electrifying didn't do it any favors either. Simply a halo (or devil horns) "look what I can do" vehicle to cover up the fact that Ford has a huge edge on electric vehicles compared to GM. The F150 and the Mach E have a 2 year head start. More prrof that max charge rate is the new "megapixel", its a useless, simply promotional statistic. A 130 kw average charge rate is mediocre at best.
