I remember back in the day, buying metal gear solid 2 at Walmart and there was a rap CD inside. When we returned it, the lady at customer service said she understood because they had alot of, "untrustworthy employees"

When I used to work in a video store, people would often cut the shrink wrap at the bottom, take out the disc and replace it with a AOL CD-rom. Then they would seal the bottom with tape. Then they would attempt to return it.

I remember many years ago, I bought the movie Goodfellas from Wal-Mart. When I got home, I took the plastic off, then took the three layers of anti theft tape off. Finally when I opened the case to watch it, the movie Presumed Innocent was in there instead. I went back to return it. I had to bring three new sealed copies back to customer service, and the lady opened them for me. Two of the three copies I brought back had Presumed Innocent in them. The third had Goodfellas. I finally got the right movie. I watched it later that night, and enjoyed it.

I got the two disc SE of Christmas Story (WB) when it first came out, maybe 15 years ago or something. Christmas day, I popped in the special features and watched a few of them. OK, pretty cool, let's see the movie (even though I could just turn on TBS and watch it all day). I put disc 1 in and I see Sopranos. OK, must be some previews. Nope. Found out it was Sopranos, Season 5 disc 2 or something. Pull out the disc and look at it again, yup still says "Christmas Story disc 1". Printing error at the factory. I still have this disc as a "collectors item".

In 2004, I bought The Thin Red Line on DVD at a Target. Got home, wouldn’t play. Returned it for another of the same movie, wouldn’t play. Ive seen other weird things with DVDs, they do occasionally make errors in the production process. I still have an Ocean’s 11 that skips automatically to the 2nd chapter and a The Fast and the Furious that skips every race scene. Both were purchased new and sealed.

Bootleg DVDs and Blu-Rays are creeping into retail chains.
Amazon and Walmart both have this issue. DVD bootlegging isn't the big buisiness it used to be, but it's gotten a lot more sophisticated.

As an ex-Walmart employee I've seen this done before, someone steals the real disc and replaces it with another reseal it and hide it in a spot (usually the Bargain Bins, or behind other movies) where they hope we wouldn't find it and just walk out with the disc, even when they're found all we were supposed to do was log it as stolen and nothing was done after that, and keep in mind we weren't allowed to open the shrink wrap to check the discs. Hell I was an employee and I still remember buying a Star Wars Rebels box set only to find out that someone stole the set and put a cheap religious film in the sleeve, the only reason I got an exchange was I lost my temper at the Customer Service Desk

I know I'm late to the party, but it happened to me this week! I stopped by Walmart Thursday and picked up a series release with plans to have a binge day on my day off. When I opened the case, there was an old dirty Memorex disc in there. It was shrink wrapped and everything. I took it back, and the clerk was like, "they surprise me with a new scam everyday." I was able to get the right set. 🙃

Wow what an emotional roller coaster! From surprised elation to confused disappointment. At least you got Lair of the White Worm for $5 and you got your money back on the other two. So I wouldn't call that a total scam because you still came out ahead at the end of it. I think the weirdest thing that's happened is my husband bought a double or triple pack of Robin Williams movies and one of the discs ended up being Napoleon Dynamite which I wasn't mad about because I wanted that movie anyway so we didn't take it back.

I went to Walmart and both copies of 47 Ronin Blu-Rays did not work and they tried to say that since I opened it that it was illegal for them to take it back. Had to speak to a manager just to get a refund. Everyone beware of cheap blu-rays from Walmart because I have not had the best luck.

    • @LibraGamesUnlimited

I used to buy from their 7.99 blu ray bin all the time and never had any issues, and most of them even come with digital copies (which I love because I'm disabled and it makes watching multiple movies while laying in bed easier). The only thing close to an issue I had was in redeeming the digtial copies of some of the Batman movies (the 89 and 90's series) because you had to go through a whole other system than I was used to.
I tried it the way they said and it didn't work so I had to contact their website. Then I had to go through a mess including scanning and e-mailing them my reicpts and after months they finally went through. Never had that issue with any other movies before or since.

    • @Dr.GmcGee2099

They just say that because they were lazy. It's not Illegal to take them back, but they can just give a gift card, A movie equal or lesser value, or cash back. Some stores in the company will only do the first two because of scams and sometimes they won't take it if you didn't buy it from that store location. I worked for Wal-Mart and had to deal with this all the time. I never turned a customer down like that and gave you BS. I would ask you what was wrong with it, give the three options, and apologize to you. that's good customer service.

    • @LibraGamesUnlimited
      @LibraGamesUnlimited 5 лет назад

I don't know about illegal but I have had them tell me that with movies and software they can't take it back once it's been open and can only trade for another copy if you say it doesn't work properly. I know because I accidentally bought a CD-ROM of house plans when I thought it was a mapping program (I wanted it for modern role-playing game mapping) and that's what they told me.
Now, with other stuff, if it's open or you don't have a recipet they can give you store credit (which I have done) but anything, where you could copy it or play it and return it,) they generally don't let you.
Of course, I've also heard that if you make a big enough scene they will take anything back.

I had a similar situation that happened to me in 2012 at Best Buy in Knoxville, TN. I collect a lot of media in DVDs, Blu-ray disc, vinyl records, and CDs. I was in Best Buy in 2012 looking at CDs. I came across a Japanese edition of Johnny Winter "Johnny Winter" (Self titled). It was the only copy they had and didn't have a price tag. But I wanted the CD. I took it to the cashier, thinking that the cashier could scan it and tell me the price. She scanned the CD and no price was available. She called the store manager to the front. He scanned it and called some other Best Buy stores. He told me no other Best Buy store had the CD and it wasn't suppose to be in the store. And he didn't have a clue as to how the CD got inside the store. He also told me he could not sale me the CD without it being in their system. I told him I didn't want to leave the store without the CD. Again he told me he couldn't sale it to me without it being in the Best Buy store system and there was no price tagged to the CD. I pulled out my smart phone and looked it up on amazon and eBay. I showed him the best price I could get from those two sites was $40.00. Somehow, he put the CD in their system for $40.00. I might add I was there at the store for hours and hours, talking with the manager while he was trying to figure out what was going on and a way he could sale the CD to me. I recently looked online for the CD and I can not find it anywhere online.

Sort of reminds me of one time I went to walmart, bought Rise of the Guardians new when it came out and found the disc on the inside had a scratch/removal of the print on top of the disc. The disc was fine, no scratches at the bottom, but I found it odd that a new movie would have some damage. I don't usually buy movies too often at walmart. So it was weird.
As far as taking anything back, it's semi true. It varies a little bit. My grandfather works at walmart and people will return half eaten food items because they "didn't like it" or something like that. Halloween costumes the day after Halloween get returned a lot and other random things. I wouldn't be surprised if dvds got returned and re-sealed or just discounted down. I can't prove this, but seeing how walmart under pays it's employees and takes majority of the profit, what do you expect?

So I clicked on this video thinking is was fairly new, then realized it was published exactly a year ago TO THE DAY, so happy video anniversary, man!
Haha, okay now that that's out of the way, what a weird event this all was. I'm as puzzled as you are, my friend. At least you were able to get your money back. And score on the $5 Vestron Blu! I'm not familiar with that movie, but I do know Vestron titles are usually on the pricier side (had my eye on the "Chopping Mall" blu-ray on Amazon for a while now and it's always around the $40 mark).
Weirdest thing that happened to me (in terms of collecting) is that I bought a used copy of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" Special Edition at a pawn shop many years ago, and everything made it appear to be the original movie, right down to the disc art, but when I popped it in, it was the fourth installment, "The Next Generation" with Matthew McConaughey... I was so bummed, to say the least.
Anyway, sorry for this novel of a comment, LOL! I'm fairly new to your channel, loving your content man, keep up the great work! Cheers! -Jex

So many things, Mr. Cinema Junky:
      1) I knew they weren't Walmart releases? Walmart doesn't have releases. They're a retailer. As explained in the video, things end up in the stores sometimes that aren't normally sold there. It never entered my mind that they weren't legitimate releases. As you'll see from other comments in this video, Walmart sells EVERYTHING through their site-to-store service.
      2) You better believe my eyes lit up when she said five dollars. I'm a cinema junkie too, and the opportunity to obtain rare Blu-rays was super appealing to me. And it would be to you too.
      3) The title of the video has multiple applications. Even if you don't think I got scammed (which I totally did, not by Walmart, but by whomever mocked up these bootleg releases), you can't deny that Walmart got scammed. Also Severin got scammed because there are bootleg versions of their product floating around now. As has been pointed out, there's a whole lot of scamming going on in this video. I'm just one of the parties involved.
Thanks for checking out the video. It's a bummer you didn't get one of your Toe Tag t-shirts. Customer service is in the toilet these days, and that's not right.

@@CerealAtMidnight Youre right...im not sure why I said walmart RELEASE, rather than "carried by walmart". Cool, man. I appreciate the follow up. I do absolutely feel very grateful to have grabbed that Vestron release for five bucks. On the flipside, I also think it absolutely stinks that this is something we have to worry about at a huge retailer like Walmart, which should be a bootleg-free zone. I was back in there today getting an oil change for my car and was wandering through the media section. I saw a Warner Archive Blu-ray of the Lee Marvin movie "Point Blank" that I'm 99% sure was also a bootleg. It had artwork that looked like it was printed on a home printer, and it had the cheap shrink wrap just like the Zombie movies had. I hate that now I'm going to have to check for stuff like this at Walmart, even if it's just that one. And yeah, the video is a little dramatic because I wanted to record as soon as all this stuff happened. When I was happy, I wanted to convey my excitement to my viewers, and when I realized what had happened, I wanted to capture the disappointment when it was fresh and still raw. But yeah, it's all good. I got a sweet Vestron release out of the experience, and a video that's brought some cool people like you to check out the channel. Thanks again, man.

    • @mrcinemajunky
      @mrcinemajunky 5 лет назад +1

@@CerealAtMidnight Luckily, like counterfeit money, you can usually feel the shrink wrap and tell if it's factory sealed or not. Factory plastic doesnt have that elasticity to it. And unless they pop for thermal printing you can sometimes smell the ink from the print. And if all that passes the disc might have that purple hue on the info side (although there are places you can buy factory quality blanks). Im sure ya know this. There are titles out there that have been limited to digital formats and available only as torents or through 3rd party sellers that want to bend you over on the price. If it's something you really really want to see and all your avenues are exhausted then dl'ing or streaming is somewhat forgiveable. But when you burn it and try to make money off it...ugh...shame on them. Ioffer is full of such people.

my best guess is that the distributor that delivered the movies to walmart purchased bulk copies from a third party which in turn sells overstock, returns, exchanges, etc. These third party copies were not 'scanned' properly (some distributors sell bulk copies which a generic barcode for all their movies). The fact that Walmart was 'reorganizing' means that those copies where either received and not barcoded or not received properly. The point is that you were not scammed. Walmart deals with third party distributors and some of them offer cheap products (for a reason) and Walmart loves to find cheap deals for their stores.

When I was a much younger fella, in the mid to late 80's, I would buy video games, play the hell out of them, then the lady at the local video rental store would re-wrap them for me and I would take them back and either get a refund or exchange them for something different. She had a wrapping machine she would use to wrap the cases on her videos and games after she removed the media from the cases to display them on the shelves in the store. I always saved the receipt and they appeared unopened. Not an ethical thing to do on my part (I was a teenager), but the right game cartridge was always in the package and in pristine condition. Several years ago my brother in law had bought his son a PC game and when they got it home there was one of those AOL discs for 6 months of free internet in the package instead of the game disc. So it's by no means new that this type of thing happens.

That's crazy man, but I get it. (As a KISS Fan), in the late 90's, KISS re-released their entire catalog on CD / Remastered, with the original "goodies" inside that were in the original albums (Mini versions of the posters / toys / etc...). A couple of my friends got played by our local Wal-Mart, apparently, people were buying the disc, taking out the "goodies" inside, and returning the CD's, which Wal-Mart put back on the shelf. Which totally sucks, especially when you are throwing down your hard earned money for something super fun inside a cool product that isn't actually there. We learned our lesson the hard way, to just stay away from that place. Great video! Sorry for the scam. Really dig your channel. Take care man.

An example of: If it's too good to be true, it usually is. The Zombie DVDs came out of the Shriek Show box set, The Zombie Pack, which itself is becoming collectible as well, like many of the other Shriek Show box sets. There's also Zombie Pack 2. Those sets, like the MGM Midnight Movies, are OOP and so they often go for more than original price. I usually try to get those kinds of box sets just a while after they are released to get the best price, before OOP. Found many Midnight Movies sets at a local Big Lots cheap, several years ago. There are certain box sets that you can get a feel will be collectible, of course not the totally public domain things usually. Exceptions I found are some of the East-West doubles and CatCom doubles. A few Front Row doubles, too.

I cannot say I know what happened, but you ever see a DVD/Blu-Ray release from Wal-Mart? In order to have your product sold in Wal-Mart, they require it to be at a low price. So companies will cheapen their product somehow in order to get it into the store. It happens with toys especially. People buy new figures (especially Marvel Legends and Star Wars) and return the packaging to the store with older less desirable figures inside. An easy way to tell this had been done was that the plastic wrapping on factory-sealed boxes have black bars with the Panini name on them. Sure enough a few weeks later a man comes to the store to return some sports cards. Red Flag #1 - They were Panini basketball cards that I didn't recognize from our store. Red Flag #2 - The plastic wrap didn't have the Panini name on it. I told him we couldn't take them back and when he asked why I told him about people opening up and resealing the boxes. I sympathise with you over your semi-tragic deal experience.
It is possible that either those Zombi 3 / Zombie 4: After Death titles were Amazon returns that were bought by a dishonest collector who wanted to replace his old Media Blasters DVDs (I own a copy of that same MB DVD of After Death and I'm planning on getting the Severing version of that same film - as for Zombi 3 I have the British 88 Films DVD) with the Severin BDs and simply swapped out the BDs with the old DVDs and resealed them to return them, knowing fully well since the returns will be tossed into a warehouse or trashed, thus getting approximately $50 of stock for free without fear of being found out. As for how those got into that Walmart store... Your guess is as good as mine (unless the store sells Amazon returns but given there's no price...).
As for my experience, I remember back in 2004, my 18-year-old self walked into a Big W store near my home in South Western Sydney (Australia) and found a copy of the Avenue One DVD of "Howling 3" which was supposed to be a free gift with a copy of Region 4 (a then-current now defunct Australian DVD magazine). The magazine was missing. I took the DVD to the clerk but since they could not locate the missing mag, they could not sell it.
So I was walking out of the store, in fact I had just reached three metres out of it when the manager came running out and offered it to me for $5. I accepted.
Now to explain something since there are people out there who remember the Avenue One catalogue, which were all highly mediocre quality and were at the time considered the worst in the country. But I was very early in my collection and "Howling 3" was only available in either a $10 DVD from MRA Entertainment or that Avenue One disc (which I still have, although I lost the cover long ago) so I didn't lose out.

I remember riding my bike and racing home. I couldn't wait to listen to MTV's new Mix CD. It was the Now that's music before Now that's music was around. So I open up the shrink wrap and eagerly open the case, only to find that it was empty. I didn't even get the wrong CD, I got nothing.
After looking around and making sure I didn't accidentally drop the CD when opening it I went back to the CD store. Luckily the owner believed me and just gave me a new CD. But I always remember that when I open 4K or Blu Ray for the first time.

Sounds like you got a return that someone swapped out for an upgraded version. Wal-mart generally will refund you with credit for damn near anything, even products that they don't sell. The employees are low paid and the ones in the returns department deal with the most crap. If it looks sellable they'll put it back on the shelf to let someone else get it, or they'll send it back to the manufacturer for a write off, so they really don't care. I keep hearing from people Walmart takes anything back, but my experience has been that as long as you have the receipt and return in the return window there is no problem. Ive seen people try to return things without a receipt and they haven't been allowed to. I would say it must depend on the store, and if it's well managed and if they are going by the rules of the corporation.
The other possibility is, someone could have made the fake cases sealed them and snuck them in. That would explain the UPC not registering with their system. Just a thought, your theory could have been the correct one as well.

Aw man Heath, that joy on your face was just taken away. Your switch and return theory makes sense, I've used a shrink wrap machine at an old job so I could easily see someone doing that. For movies my worst burn has either been buying a blu ray and the disc is missing. Recently I've been burned on buying Marvel Masterworks online. I accidentally bought a soft cover (damn those Barns and Noble edition) edition but the seller said "oh no all of my trades are hardcover." So I decided to buy more of them to save on shipping. Well I didn't save on shipping the weight of the books greatly increased the price I had to get them sent to the US border. Then all the additional books I bought were softcover! My experience with Walmart is that they tend to have short runs of certain movies that they put on the shelf for a limited time (1 - 2 weeks) after which they're pulled from the shelves. This isn't the case with all movies, but is with some. I've also had a number of bad discs where whatever box they had must of sat in water. I have a theory that some of Walmart's movie stock could be returned Amazon discs/media. A lot of times the short term stuff I've seen at Walmart has been featured on Amazon. Walmart can be problematic to deal with sometimes. They didn't want to believe my "bad discs" despite the fact that it was less than 1 hour later, but luckily when they opened the next copy of the same disc it had the same damage.

This sounds like a classic case of someone trying to scam walmart with non walmart returns, looks like the person put their old copies into the blu ray cases so that walmart would see that the titles match the discs (they probably dont examine close enough) and then my guess is walmart sealed them to re sell them, or the person just sealed them first.

You are probably correct on your assessment of what happened. I would point out that Lair of the White Worm was and still is available at Target, but at five times what you paid. Having worked there, I've seen plenty of Dvds/Blu rays/Video games returned that 1) had price tags from WalMart or Toys R Us on them, 2) had obviously been opened and resealed, or 3) are items Target has never carried, in store or online. It is a side effect of the "customer is always right" fallacy that bad word of mouth is more destructive to sales than fraud.

Might have been the ol' China Shuffle. Factory A produces 3,000 Blu-ray cases but when factory B sends the discs over, they're all old DVDs. So they just fill the order, seal the cases, and move onto the next order. There's so much stuff coming out of China, mistakes are bound to happen. Sort of like when you buy a box of GE light bulbs but when you open it all the light bulbs are Philips. May have been a malicious scam, might have been a mix-up. Maybe there's 3,000 DVDs out there on sale for $2.99 with a really nice Blu-ray inside. Neat story to tell either way.

Those B movie releases used to be in the Walmart Blu Ray bin for $5 all the time.

The DC comics you refer to are available through Wal-Mart as an online order, it does not appear that they are stocked in stores. Sorry to hear about your blue ray problems.

Its really easy to get scammed at Walmart, because I have a 4K UHD Bluray case with Bad Boys 1-2 Bluray in it. What I expexted to be in the case was Bad Boys For Life 4K UHD Bluray. The locking clip on Sony cases was gone, and the case was shrink wrapped, to easy to open.

Dude, I used to work at Wal-Mart and you would not BELIEVE the stuff people returned! We would find stuff all the time where someone would buy a tv, then put there old tv in the box, and return it. Then we would just sell it again! So someone buys a 1200 TV ( at the time that was only like a 36 inch tv) and finds out it's the wrong tv in the box. I recently got an Iron that was clearly sold b4 bc it was all fucked up, and not even the right box! Man, we once got a bunch of movies that clearly had Best Buy stickers on them!

I meant to say it was the wrong iron, not box

It's crazy how many comments I've gotten from people who either still work or used to work at Walmart and how different their experiences are. I've had several people tell me I'm a liar because Walmart doesn't take things back if they're used, or if the item isn't sealed, or whatever, but I've had a lot more comments like yours where they talk about how Walmart will take anything back, usually without even really checking the items. Crazy stuff. There seems to be no solid policy about returns.

I actually bought a Blu-ray copy of Freddy vs Jason at Fry's Electronics for $7 and the plastic looked a little funky. When I got home and opened it, there was nothing inside 😆

I just came across your channel and You will probably never read this because your video is over a year old but I used to work for the 3rd party company that did the resets plus the week adding and removal of movies. The movies not scanning is a error of the movie distributors. I have see movies for different countries arrive in stores. Now as far as the scam goes it was 1 of 2 things. Someone switched the discs, which I have seen happen but never that elaborate or 2, when a movie does sell for whatever reason it gets sent back to the Distribution company and sometimes they take out discs out of 1 package and place it in another pack to make a new onl
