    I'm glad to see people standing up for physical media. I'm 40 and I still buy DVD/blu-rays. I picked up a bunch of Mill Creek stuff, like Sliders, Knight Rider, Miami Vice and others and this is a great way to add these shows to your library collection and watch When You Want. Cool video

    Mill Creek’s horror classics set has so many 20-60’s horror movies that i’ve heard amazing things about and i can’t find those anywhere else. They are doing a true service to humanity. especially old horror fans who aren’t able to get originals.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight 6 лет назад +4

      It's true! Some of those horror classics have pricey special edition Blu-rays that will cost 25 or 30 dollars each, but a lot of them aren't available at all. But for a few bucks, you can get tons of them on these Mill Creek sets. For movie fans who want to learn about the classics (and actually watch them), there's nothing better.

    I couldn’t agree more. I love Mill Creek and always buy their sets. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t own the 1920’s Jekyll and Hyde flick I love so much, nor would I have seen a black-and-white copy of Nosferatu, which I really dug. That same box set even came with Metropolis, which I loved after seeing it there. The first film in the set was “Carnival of Souls”, and I had never seen it before. They are a blessing lol.

    Just stumbled upon this video while I was looking at reviews for some mill creek stuff. I just bought the 100 cheesy movies box set by them that includes their 50 (70s movies collection) and their 50 (80s movies collection). Despite some of the audio issues I appreciate your comments supporting the company. I mean you are right, you're mostly paying for the large amount of movies in the collections vs the quality or whether or not the movies are considered great. Nice job!

    I'm a big fan of the Mill Creek multi movie sets. I have the Horror/SF sets and many of the sets featuring other genres. The packaging ranges from okay to really nice (the 200 movie Horror set has great packaging). The quality of the movies varies but everything is at least watchable. Many of the older movies don't benefit greatly from HD anyway, and I enjoy seeing them a little grainy and beat-up. It reminds me of watching them on TV broadcasts from the '60s/'70s (Monster Kid here). Most of the movies on these bargain packs are available on You Tube but you never know when that might change for whatever reason. I like knowing I can grab them off my shelf and watch them anytime I want to without relying on internet chaos. With the prices on the sets being so low there's a huge amount of value here. I agree with you about the greatness of the Mill Creek multi pack PD compilation sets. I watched your video a few months ago and commented then, as well, so your vid really hits home for many of us.

    I just commented on your "collecting physical media in a digital world," and I just watched this video a little while ago. Again, excellent video! And again we are overall on the same page. I genuinely think that we'd be really good friends if we knew each other in person.
    I haven't bought any of those huge multi movie sets (for the most part they just aren't my "cup of tea"), but I have a few movies that Mill Creek has released, and I love them for their TV series releases.
    I've bought many of their TV on DVD season and in some cases complete series sets. In some cases they were shows that were previously released and I didn't pick up at the time for one reason or another, and then they went out of print and were going for insane money. So the Mill Creek releases were a viable option.
    And I love the fact that they are releasing shows on Blu-Ray where possible!
    Like you mentioned with Miami Vice, I believe their Quantum Leap set has most of the original music restored, which was not the case to the same extent on the original Universal DVD releases. Though I already owned the DVDs (a couple sets of them, in fact), I had no problem at all buying them again in this Blu-Ray set.
    Over the years I kept meaning to buy the Knight Rider season sets on DVD, but just kept putting it off for one reason or another. Then when the Blu-Ray set was announced, it was a no-brainer. Since there are no extras at all beyond the episodes, I did pick up a used copy (thankfully for a low price) of the original first season release around the time that I got the Blu-Ray set because it included the TV movie "Knight Rider 2000," and I wanted to have that.
    I'll admit that I really dislike things like paper sleeves, those cardboard sleeves in the complete series sets, and stacked discs. But despite my preferences in that regard, as you pointed out, since our options these days is this or nothing, then this is much more preferable.
    I've even gone so far as to swap out cases and repackage the discs. For individual season set releases that come in those cases that are basically the same size as a standard DVD case, but use the paper sleeves instead of disc hubs, I have just swapped out the case, itself with one with disc hubs, sliding the existing cover art into the replacement case.
    But where needed, I'm not opposed to using a difference case (or cases) entirely and making and printing up custom artwork if it means having the discs in hubs. I picked up a few complete series DVD sets a while ago that I intend to do that with eventually.
    For sets like the Quantum Leap set, I do want to keep the original outer box and cover art for the individual seasons. But I'm having a hard time finding four-disc cases that are the same overall size as the individuals cases in these sets (they do exist, but are rare). So that's something that I'm on the hunt for a solution on. First world problems and all of that. ;)

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight 6 лет назад

      I posted a video after this one where I look at three BRAND NEW releases from this week from Mill Creek and chart the progress that I noticed about those new releases. Biggest take away? Their new release of S.W.A.T. The Complete Series has no paper sleeves and every disc gets its own tray. HUGE improvement. I'm sure it's risky for a company like Mill Creek--who has traditionally built their business from selling mass quantities of stuff at dirt cheap prices and being a budget label--to invest a little more in the final product (fewer episodes per disc, moving away from paper sleeves, etc) when the profit margin is probably not huge. A flop release or two could really affect some of these smaller distribution companies. That's why I'm trying to support as many of their new releases as I can. the old saying "vote with your wallet" applies. Honestly, that's also one of the reasons I made these videos, with the hopes that they'd see the feedback they were getting and recognize what works and what needs to be improved.
      Thanks again for your comment!

    Soap is a perfect example of a TV Show being released by Mill Creek. When Soap was first released by Sony, the majority of the episodes were the syndication prints (which means at least 4 to 5 minutes cut out of every episode), Mill Creek went in, got the license, and restored the prints their original ABC presentation (uncut no syndication print). The same thing happened to That '70s Show. Mill Creek really did their research for these sets.

    I know I've said something about this on another one of your videos (and not trying to harp on this) but now that I've gone through some of the Mill Creek sets (got the Tales of Terror and the Drive-In Cult Classics megasets along with the 20 movie Spaghetti Westerns set and 100 Ways To Die set) I realize that they're not always getting the original aspect ratios of these films. I started to watch God's Gun and kept wishing it was the original widescreen presentation. Perhaps you could talk about this in a future video.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight 5 лет назад +1

      Those are all public domain collections and I believe every single one of them is no longer in production. I can’t and won’t speak for Mill Creek, but I don’t think they are the the company now that they used to be (in a good way). I think they’ve put a lot of those sorts of big movie collections behind them and are focusing on a a whole lot more single movie releases. Instead of putting out 50 movies with questionable aspect ratios and the quality, they mostly release single movies now with solid transfers and original aspect ratios. I’ve received four screener copies from them in the last month or so: the anime Metropolis, Can’t Hardly Wait, the TV miniseries Buffalo Girls, and a TV show called Chillers. They are all in their original aspect ratio and are studio-level quality. Moving forward in any new Mill Creek videos or reviews I create, I’ll list be sure to discuss aspect ratio, but I just want to point out that all the collections you mentioned as not having the original aspect ratios are collections they don’t produce anymore. That might be why.

      @@CerealAtMidnight Fair enough. Good video. I'm a big Mill Creek fan. I have their 200 movie Horror Box Set as well as several of their 50 movie packs and BD double features. The paper sleeves don't bother me and neither does the picture/sound quality. I have and appreciate great Blu-ray releases by Grindhouse Releasing, Severin, Arrow, Synapse, and the like, but for pure value you can't beat what Mill Creek offers for the minuscule price. Grindhouse/drive-in flicks maintain their original charm when viewed on a less than stellar presentation anyway. And, many of the older low budget films show the wires and monster-suit seams a little too readily on hi-def Blu-ray. They weren't made to show in that amount of detail and, like old porn stars, they benefit from a more obscured presentation.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight 6 лет назад

      I agree with you. So I'm thinking about grabbing that 200 movie horror set since it has some movies that aren't on a few of my other horror sets. Do you recommend it? I have the 200 Drive In movie collection, and I haven't researched how much overlap there is.

    • @michaeldodd9154
      @michaeldodd9154 6 лет назад

      Yes, I highly recommend the 200 film Horror set. The box displays very well on the shelf, and at, or below, a quarter a movie the value is extremely good. I need to get the 200 film Drive-In set you showed in the video. I don't know how much overlap there is between the two sets but I would guess far less than half. I collect the PD compilation sets as part of the history of genre DVD, and I still have my old genre DVDs from companies like Alpha and Diamond. I know I'm in the minority but I think those old DVD editions are important and worth collecting, just as VHS and 8mm movies are.

    Great Review of Mill Creek, great distribution company, like you said they give people what they want. So, I bought the I Dream of Jeannie Complete Series Set on DVD (minus the cardboard packaging) the resolution was terrific, excellent quality and everything, but like you said they crammed way too many episodes on one disc, while the quality is excellent, sometimes you know when cramming so many episodes on to one disc is bad, mostly the volume is kinda low on some episodes, but the quality is excellent, and plus you get the black-and-white version of season 1 on this set, something Sony NEVER did, and the same can be said for Bewitched. What's even better is that it is a 12 disc set, while Sony is 20 discs, Mill Creek has cardboard packaging, and Sony has spindles, I'd choose Mill Creek. I'd recommend this set to ANYONE.

    I just saw some Hercules with Kevin Sorbo on DVD at Walmart from Mill Creek, for $54. I'll wait til it's like $15 lol. I just saw they have a Krull Blu-ray, for $15, and, Charlie's Angels Blu-ray, for $170! I know you've been wanting Charlie's Angels, as do I. $170 is a little steep for me right now; I wonder if I could find it cheaper.
    I'm glad you think about this stuff; the loss of being able to access films and shows does trouble me. I can't believe people would call themselves movie buffs yet not value physical media, and depend on everything for streaming. It boggles my mind. Also, libraries are a good resource for media, but they often don't have the exact title one might be looking for. It's weird to me, how, technically, the films are available on RUclips streaming for a fee (so hidden behind a paywall), but the physical copies are disappearing. We might live in a world where essentially any film you don't have or your friend doesn't have, you won't be able to see. Kids might grow up and only see the most recent films, and never see films from the '60s or '70s. These are the sorts of things that keep me up at night lol

    Mill Creek is also great if you're into animation because they pick up a lot of shows from the 80s and 90s that are just to obscure for a more expensive release and put them out. Off the top of my head I have releases of Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, Godzilla (the one based on the 1999 movie), Liberty's Kids, BraveStarr, The He-Man Reboot, Country and City Mouse Adventures, COPS, Jace and the Wheeled Warriors, and Roswell Conspiracies that they handled.
    I'm sure there's likely more in my animation collection from them I'm not remembering as well

    I have 4 Mill Creek horror movie DVD sets full of movies from the 70’s-early 00’s. Most of them are movies that are only available as super rare VHS or long out of print DVDs. Even the Mill Creek sets I have are out of print and $80-200 each now, but that’s still much cheaper than trying to assemble everything individually. You are 100% correct that Mill Creek provides a service for a very specific demographic. Their sets aren’t for everyone. I am a huge fan of MillCreek. I have a lot of their releases. My only issue is releases like the original Magnum PI now on Blu Ray. I understand parts of episodes are missing. I hate when companies do that. Not just them. Why can’t they give us the complete episodes? At any rate, beyond that, they have some super cool releases over the years!

      If you have ANY affection for Knight Rider or Airwolf, they are 100 percent worth getting. I grew up with Knight Rider and would pretend I was cruising in KITT while I rode my bike through the neighborhood. For me, it was a no-brainer. But if you're younger than me and didn't grow up in the 80s, I can't say if it will appeal to you or not.

    I have a few of these sets ranging between 10-50 movies. My favorite is the 50 Horror Classics set you showed at the beginning. I love B&W horror and It introduced me to some stuff I'd never heard of like Attack of the Giant Leeches and The Gila Monster. There are also some legit classics on there like Nosferatu and Phantom of the Opera.

    I've had a ball with the Mill Creek sets over the last 2 years. The covers on my sets are different than many of the newer ones, same movies though. Many are out an out bad but they are good for laughs often. All the movies are well described on the case, even the bad ones! The Horror set contains Carnaval of Sould, NIght of The Living Dead, Metropolis a silent classic, right there you have the money you have spent for the entire set with even more films (yes some of them cheesy bad only good for laughs). The people that complain about the Mill Creek sets are those who expect a 3 star movie on every disc, thats not going to happen.

  • @snackman94
    @snackman94 5 лет назад

    Yeah, I picked up the King of Queens set a couple years ago at Best Buy and it was just two stacks of discs. But since I rip the discs to an external drive and watch them in Kodi, it's not really a problem. It was a really good deal - $25 for the whole series - so I really don't mind the packaging style. Plus, it probably saves quite a bit of space on the shelf as this is probably the most space-efficient way to go about it.

    • @CerealAtMidnight

      ALMOST ALL of the movies from the Drive In Cult Classics 32 movie set are also found in the 200 movie set, but there are THREE that aren't and can only be found in the Drive In Cult Classics 32 movie set. Meanwhile, there are 14 movies that can only found on that 200 movie set and aren't in any other Mill Creek sets. If you don't care about missing out on those three movies, the 200 movie collection is a way better deal.

    Sup bro! Yeah man, I just started getting into watching old tv shows and b-movies, and these collections are so perfect and amazing for that! You're right, it's "quantity over quality." Most of these are movies I've never heard of, so they are cool to check out, and then if I like these films then maybe I can look into finding better prints elsewhere. But what you get for the price, especially when found "used" or secondhand, is great. So far, I have the Hitchcock Begins set, Dark Crimes, Chillers, Horror Classics, Sci-Fi Invasion and the Drive-In Cult Classics. I'd love to get that mega 200 movie set of the Drive-In films. That thing looks amazing!

      Well said, sir! I made this video because there are a surprising amount of physical media collectors who don't understand what a valuable place Mill Creek occupies on the market. I frequent certain sites and forums, and you would think Mill Creek ran over their dog or something. Like, it's PERSONAL. And I can tell that a lot of it comes from lack of information on the facts and how it all works, and that a lot of it comes from this weird segment of collectors who like to think they're elite. Anyway, thanks for watching, and I'm glad you're a fan of Mill Creek too!

      You've just reminded me that I need to grab that set while it's still in print. It's hard to find fifties and sixties western shows on DVD, so I need to support that release. It can join its place alongside my sets of "Rawhide" and "Have Gun - Will Travel." I agree with you, Mill Creek really shines when they rescue movies and TV shows that are out of print and put them back in circulation. I'm thinking of doing a DVD review series (mostly concentrating on my collection and my Classic Cinema knowledge) so if you don't mind me picking your brain for a minute, what equipment are you using for your videos? I'm doing mine on my Moto G4 Plus smartphone with a tripod, transferring to PC and editing with Windows Movie Maker. I'm also interested in your sound setup. I notice you're using a clip-on mic. Is that Bluetooth?

      I film on my iPhone 6S at 30fps at 1080p and using a lavalier mic to record my audio straight into the phone. It is not Bluetooth. I do almost everything in my phone. I edit, create music, and polish it off in iMovie, then export it to the PC for the upload. I use a few different graphics programs for my thumbnails and to create things like my title sequence, but it all eventually goes through my phone. All my assets are always there, ready to go whenever I need them. If there's any other help I can offer, let me know!

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight 4 года назад

      Yes, they don't seem to be in the business of public domain movies anywhere and have come a long way in the last few years. They do still release some smaller multi-movie packs, usually in collections of ten or twelve, but nothing like the old days. The good news is, there are lots of those old sets floating around on ebay and they go for a really good price. I highly recommend the 50-disc 200 film sets, if you can afford them. There's one for Drive-in movies, one for horror, one for westerns, and another that collects war documentaries.

    Don’t know if I agree with all this mill creek business but I can see ur point. I think people who say they deserve better then the product there producing is valid too. It’s great the content is made and put out to be available but if you really love a show that u invested and watched for years to then get substandard viewing lack of a a great package the expectation of quality is not there and feel I deserve better experience. I also don’t want to invest in that product or products for cheap $8.00 $25 to get nickel and dimed on multiple tv shows to find out a year or 2 latter it’s getting a fantastic release and have to repurchase it I would rather wait. Also if the packaging is crap I’m les introduced to pull it out and watch it and that a fact. This also points out another problem that the companies that own the right should have a standard on how the sub leasing product comes out but they don’t care enough to produce it themselves or make sure it gets the proper treatment. I’m still waiting for a good solid release of perfect strangers may never happen but I’ll keep waiting.

      Mill Creek Entertainment has come a long, long, long way in the 2 1/2 years since this video was made. Yes, there's always room to grow, but so many of the criticisms I see leveled against them apply to several years ago, but not now. A lot of A-list shows have gotten an appropriate A-level treatment from them in the last year or so. Perfect Strangers is on DVD from Warner Archive, and will not be getting any release better than that, as Warner Brothers does not license its library out to third parties. I believe they have put every season on disc now, though. Here's a newer video from a few months ago (not a few years ago) that really shows how far Mill Creek has come in the last 2-3 years: ruclips.net/video/d9lrYZW7vMs/видео.html

Zaranyzerak has done a great job of covering the multi-movie packs, huge public domain collections, and TV shows on Blu-ray. Mill creek put out Bump in the Night the complete series on dvd and I love it, also, what is compression? What does it do if there’s too many episodes on one disc??

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight 6 лет назад

      Compression refers to how "squeezed" the content of a disc is. You can fit between 2 1/2 - 3 hours of video onto a dual layer DVD without any noticeable sacrifice in image quality. For TV shows, this translates to about 7 or 8 episodes of a half-hour show or four episodes of an hour long drama (minus commercials). You can fit more episodes than this onto a DVD by "compressing" the data, but it will start to make the video quality look worse. In Mill Creek's case, when they put 5 or 6 hours of video onto a single DVD, the video starts to look harsh and pixelated. Black becomes more like gray, and most DVD players really have a hard time with red, which seems to become runny. Instead of smooth edges on the image, you start to see jagged, squared edges. For HD formats like Blu-ray, compression isn't as much of an issue because there's so much space on the discs, but most all DVDs use some form of digital compression. When companies like Mill Creek try to put too many episodes on their DVDs so they actually use less discs, you can almost always tell because the video image quality isn't as good as it should be. Thankfully, Mill Creek has gotten better about this in the last few years.

    • @kellomellow2791

    God bless Mill Creek and shout Factory for doing what other companies was too damn lazy to finish, I remember when T.J. Hooker came to DVD, I rushed to BestBuy and picked up the Season 1&2 combo set and eagerly awaited the future sets..Well some years go by and then I find out the canceled all future releases..UGH! Some more years go by and POOF shout Factory releases the entire series on a big DVD box set at WalMart for $30.00.
    Onto to Mill Creek, I love those mega movie packs they have out and they also did the entire series of Airwolf, That said though, Not too good on casing..Packing consists of the DVDs being put into special 2 disc envelops (1 DVD on top and 1 on bottom) Worse design because they are subject to falling out if turned upside down.
    I wish Mill Creek would release ALL of Dragnet 1951-1959 (the black&white ones) cause no other company seems intrersted, The biggest sets you find..Say The Big Dragnet Collection 100 Episodes, For example, Well you might get 30 Dragnet and the rest ALL fillers, Shows such as GMen,Bulldog Drummond,Racket Squad,etc to hit the 100 number, That is quasi false advertising as the part saying it's not pure Dragnet all the way is itty bity sometimes and also, Why not put forth the effort to DO A ENTIRE SERIES vs half assing and then throwing in a grab bag to fill gaps? If I pay for a series that is just what I want..That series ONLY and not a grab bag to fill voids left.

      I think Mill Creek's Blu-ray sets (Airwolf, Community, Miami Vice, Knight Rider, etc) run circles around their DVD releases, especially in the packaging department. I really can't stand those cardboard envelopes. I've started reviewing Mill Creek's TV shows on Blu-ray, one by one. The Blu-rays are much better, and each season comes in a Blu-ray case. As for Dragnet, I believe there are copyright issues with that show. The first 100 episodes are in the public domain, but I believe after that, it gets really spotty. Theoretically, Universal holds the rights (I believe), but why they haven't licensed out the stuff they own is anybody's guess.

    Mill creek is great, people need to think about stuff before they criticize someone or something. Like my favorite show of all time will never come to DVD or BLU RAY due to music licensing the show is called Cold Case I wish mill creek could pull it off. And when it comes to getting better presentation if I where mill creek I would make an economy edition with just the discs, & a collectors edition with upscale presentation and with a extras disc.

    Maybe Mill Creek can cut a deal with USA to do a Blu-Ray set of White Collar, especially since there's probably more of a market for it now that Netflix has dropped it. And maybe they could cut a deal with Fox to do a Blu-Ray set of Lie to Me.
    Well, as long as they don't put too many episodes on a disc.

    Great video. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻You a fan of ECHOBRIDGE?

      Yes, I like Echo Bridge, especially back when they had distribution rights with some major studios. Now it seems like they've lost a lot of the rights to stuff that put them on the map. While Mill Creek seems like a company on the rise to me, Echo Bridge seems like they're fading fast.
