    The remake of Friday the 13th had a great Jason. I wouldn’t say the movie is great, but it’s miles better than the other 3 new line Jason movies.

    My favorite horror icon is Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise. I think he is a rarity in horror icons because he is the good guy, which doesn't happen much.

      I'm also a defender of the remake, it takes the series back to it's roots without rehashing the same premise of the original movie, something I very much dislike about many of the other remakes (Halloween, Nightmare, Psycho etc).

    Noted that the 10 disc set of Friday the 13th had scratched discs but are you interested in the upcoming set from Shout Factory?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  4 года назад

      I'm not wild about the idea of buying the new Scream Factory box set, no. And I haven't pre-ordered it.
      1) the cost they're charging (the first 8 movies are available right now on Amazon on Blu-ray for around $25, brand new) feels exorbitant.
      2) I don't really care for the artwork, especially compared to the Halloween box set, which is sleek and minimalist.
      3) I've bought these movies so many times. I would much rather have seen this attention being given to something that hasn't had many previous Blu-ray releases. Most of the Friday the 13th movies (not part 9 and 10) have had at least three previous Blu-ray releases.

    One thing to look for is the song Starlight from Helloween: it's the opening track from their first release, and it starts with the Silver Shamrock tune! I didn't see Halloween III until a few years ago, but I can see why they used it. Great video by the way!

    Ohh a lot to unpack here so I'm going to watch it again over the weekend and add a few more deeper thoughts (if that's ok?)... What I will say is I so want to see a Wolfman Jr. show! Though my additional idea would be to have him as not only the young son of the OG wolfman BUT also a budding blues musician as Wolfman Jr. just sounds like a rocking good stage name... Heck Crossroads with werewolves is what I'm thinking basically! Keep up with the excellent work and I'll return soon. :)

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  6 лет назад

      Yeah, I think you’re right about modern horror icons, but the funny thing is, they aren’t iconic. The conjuring movies are very popular and make a ton of money, but there nothing there that’s instantly recognizable. Annabelle is no Chucky.

    • @SegaCDUniverse
      @SegaCDUniverse 6 лет назад

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  6 лет назад +1

      I was hoping some younger people would point out what they think is currently iconic, but so far no one has. Jigsaw gets named, but he’s been around for almost 15 years. “It” and Pennywise have been around for decades. Krampus is a good one, though. Victor Crowley from Hatchet too, but I don’t think most people have seen those or know who he is.

    • @SegaCDUniverse

    I was lucky enough to find the Nightmare encyclopedia disc from the dvd box set at a flea market for $1 and I loved that disc and it’s trivia and such. Freddy is forever my favorite slasher. I actually made a Freddy lunchbox, he was my “universal monster” icon

  • @meesh13666
    @meesh13666 6 лет назад

    Current attempts at creating slasher icons could be: Leslie Vernon (Behind the Mask), if they would have done more films, Blue Skeleton crew (Houses October Built), too bad they made the sequel, which in my opinion undermines the entire first film, The Collector (The Collector/The Collection) had a cool premise and Baby Face (Happy Death Day), they are working on a sequel and was a fun kind of throwback feeling attempt at a slasher ala Scream. Just my 2 cents

    I know this is 2 years ago but I was watching some of your old videos and this was really interesting. The original Halloween is my favourite horror movie (along with Alien) and Michael Myers my fave slasher killer. I love Halloween 2 and H20 as well. The others range from pretty good to okay to really bad! Overall Nightmare on Elm Street is my favourite franchise. Other than the remake I love ALL these movies. Not saying they're all good lol but I love them. Unlike Halloween and Michael I don't find them or Freddy particularly scary, but just so so fun and entertaining and very rewatchable. I'm currently going through them again. I've only seen the first Friday the 13th! I really want the new boxset so I can watch the rest. I'm not sure about current iconic horror movies or characters. Not like the Monsters of the 30s/40s/50s and the Slashers here. There's a lot of ghost/ possession movies in recent years and while some are good and popular nothing stands out as being particularly iconic to me

    Victor Crowley from the Hatchet series, and Victor Crowley (Hatchet 4).
    Chromeskull from the Laid To Rest movies. There are two out now, and a third is in the works.
    Also, Art The Clown from the movie Terrifier is pretty badass.

      @Seanrt72 6 лет назад

      i don't know if I'd say profoundly better, but I felt like I understood it much better. The tension was a little tighter. My draw for the film is Donald Pleasance. Of the Michael/Jason/Freddy cabal, Halloween is the only franchise that kept a major character in continuity that wasn't the killer. I felt his performances of Dr. Loomis got better each time, with his madness/obsession on perfect display in Part 4. A great actor that spent the last 20 years of his life's work building this character's trauma. I'm going to rewatch it tonight (last I watched it was 2016) and see what i can relay without any spoilers ;)

They haven't seen any of the movies, but other kids talk about them enough that they are aware. For me, a 17 year old now, when I was a kid people still believed the biggest horror icons were Freddy, Jason, Michael, and Leatherface. There is no horror movie slasher orientated that has been released in this generation that is anywhere close to a Freddy, Jason, or Michael. Halloween III, Season of the Witch, was my first Halloween movie. I was probably 12-13 years old and was browsing the basement of one of the local video store. This was mid-late 1980s. I knew nothing about these movies, but I remember seeing the VHS-cover. I HAD to see it, and I did. I thought it was a little confusing, but I liked the movie and found it very scary. After that I saw the Terminator, and loved that too. I really like these old gritty R-rated crafty movies that are pieces of art, and created much more independently from all the bullshit that governs movie productions today.
    to owner of the Terminator franschise: You want to save this universe? Only one way to do it: Go back to the roots. Make it rated R, and on a small budget.

    Everyone I knew who went to see freddy vs jason in the cinemas all enjoyed it at the time. We must have just been weird. Have to agree Freddys Nightmare needs a disc release of the entire series. I still do not understand why the first episode is not on the nightmare movie box set, it relates directly to the movies rather than the episodes they put on it. I'm jealous of the documentaries as I don't have them and they go for a few quid these days

    I have a lot of catching up to do. I actually like horror and slashers, but i never paid much attention until a few years ago. I've seen most of the first movies of each series you talked about, but rarelly the sequels
    I recently bought the Psycho 4 movie set. I'll try to dig into it very soon
    An i really want to see the Chucky series. I only saw the first 2 movies i theaters when they came out, and nothing else since
    Also, i actually like Freddy vs Jason. I think part of it that on my first viewing, it was at midnight, opening night, and the crowd was really into it. Laughing and gasping at the right places. It's been a while since i saw it, but not that long ago, and i still liked it. I also don't have a huge history with either franchise, so i guess that help

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  6 лет назад

      The Chucky movies are crazy. The first three of them are great, straight-forward horror movies about a killer doll. Then they take some time off and come back with Bride of Chucky, a meta movie kind of like Scream that's more parody than straight horror. The sequel is even more of that thing, so weird and unusual and meta. Then they reinvent the series again almost a decade later and make the doll completely scary again. It's a crazy series that has gone to some ridiculous places but that still feels like it has a ton of life in it.

    I have the Friday the 13th Blu-ray set that came in the black tin. Every disc plays flawlessly and not a single one scratched. It includes all the original series as well as Freddy vs Jason, the remake and Camp Crystal Lake Memories.
    I love the first 2 Texas Chainsaw movies as well as the remake of the first one.
    Although I agree the Scream franchise did breath new life into the slasher sub-genre of horror I personally wouldn't consider Ghostface an icon because in each film it's a different character wearing the costume.
    The new Child's Play remake has nothing to do with Charles Lee Ray aka Chucky but is going to be robot doll with A.I. that has been hacked and reprogrammed by a rouge programmer.

    For modern horror icons I was going to say Ghostface and Chucky but you hit them both on the head, apparently. I don't watch slasher films as a rule (a combination of too much empathy, too much imagination and too little appreciation for artificial Gore will do that to a person lol) so I don't really keep up with trends. Then again, there haven't really been serialized horror films in the same way in recent years as there have been in the past, either, unless it's something like "Ouiji 8" starring (generic ghost/demon). I don't know if you've noticed that, but it seems I have, is it a thing?

    Cereal At Midnight: I know you made this a while ago, and may not respond. However two quick things. 1) I love your channel and presentations. 2) In this version you mentioned you didn't appreciate the Rob Zombie "Halloween" remake and I couldn't agree more. I am curious to know if it's because of the same reasoning as me. The original "Halloween" is one of my favourite horror films and it's especially creepy because we know nothing about Michael Myers except that one night he decided to kill his sister. He has seemingly normal parents, though we know nothing of them either, but that's what makes it creepy to me; one night a young boy snaps and kills his sister for no apparent reason. Cut to the Zombie reboot and we have the trite, hackneyed emo kid with his bangs over his eyes and his head hung low with parents who would make anyone want to murder somebody. To me that completely ruined the concept of the original and just wondered if that was part of the reason for you as well.
    Not to mention I agree that classics just shouldn't be remade/rebooted.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the reason you named for the Rob Zombie Halloween not working is one of the many reasons I think it fails. I also just don't care much for Rob Zombie's "trailer park gothic" approach, and I feel like he just keeps making the same movie over and over again, with Lords of Salem being the only exception. And that's okay, I like House of 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects alright. If his version of Halloween were something else and not a remake of one of the most beloved classics of the entire genre, I'd be a lot more allowing. I still don't think the movie would quite work or be good, but it would be easier for me to dismiss.

      I don't mean to diminish anyone else's thoughts about the Friday the 13th remake. I was disappointed because, as a remake, they had to repeat elements from earlier entries in the series that I had loved for a long time. It did have some cool, intense scenes in it, though. I look at a movie like Curse of Chucky and see how it both starts a new cycle while also still keeping everything that came before. Curse of Chucky isn't a reboot, but it feels fresh and new. I feel like New Line Cinema doesn't really understand what makes Jason so popular, and I also didn't care for the studio's choice of Marcus Nispel as the director or the fact that Michael Bay was producing. But having said that, I recognize I'm being probably overly critical because I'm very attached to that series. I think it's AWESOME that you dig the movie and I would never speak for anyone other than myself. I wish I did love that movie, and maybe if I watch it a few more times, I will.
