THE SECRET TO FLIP TURNS

  • This week we wanted to focus on a problem that we see on pool decks across the globe. Most swimmers use their walls as a means to turn around, but not to the full extent of using them to your advantage. The ‘In-N-Out’ drill helps you do exactly that. A quick and easy drill that replicates the power of top speed and teaches you to utilize momentum on your way into the wall, and absorb it out.
    As usual, Let us know what you think of this weeks drill! Recommendations for our next video topic? Let us know in the comments below!

    Is it just me or do flip turns tend to take more energy in than just touching the wall and turning around? How do I use flip turns to save energy rather than expel it? I’m asthmatic so I tend to lose air fast which is why I think flip turns are like this for me. Any input would be fantastic!

    • @EvilMrGui
      @EvilMrGui 3 года назад

      Flipturns are generally faster than touch and go turns

    • @cneal6197
      @cneal6197 3 года назад

      @@EvilMrGui yeah I’m a competitive swimmer so I use flip turns for freestyle and back and then open turns for butterfly and breaststroke. Flip turns are only really hard in long distance for me.

    • @EvilMrGui
      @EvilMrGui 3 года назад

      @@cneal6197 Yeah I can agree with you. When I started swimming, my breaststroke was faster than my freestyle so I kept doing open turns even on my freestyle. Trust me, after a while of flip turns, you get used to it

    • @carlton24
      @carlton24 3 года назад

      it does take more energy but when performed right it's faster than touching the wall in competitions

    I'd like to see a video (or a bunch of videos) about tactics in different disciplines. For example, what you should focus on when you swim 50 m or 100 m freestyle, how should you breathe in 200 m medley or how you should use your energy when swimming long distances like 1500 m freestyle.
    And one more idea, it would be awesome if you tell us about swimming 50 m freestyle sprint technique, especially about straight arms technique, because I find it pretty difficult.
    And by the way, as always, awesome video :)

    Great video! I always tend to turn around on my chest too quickly as soon as I push off the wall and only then start ondulating, which makes me hit the water and loose momentum. Should I leave the wall ondulating on my back until i'm on my chest or is there a way I can fix this? Thanks!

    • @PhlexSwim
      @PhlexSwim  6 лет назад +1

      Hey! We have another video that actually fixes that exact problem. You should be thinking about hitting the wall while still on your back, and as you push off you are going to seamlessly transition back to your stomach underwater. Here is the video ruclips.net/video/v-WVqHiXuwc/видео.html

    Greetings,
    I usually swim 1.5k to 2k and I would love to be more efficient, like Sun Yang. I look at his videos and I love two things that he does. 1) Maintaining a 27 stroke swim per every 50m 2) Kicking very little. Could you shed some light on that? Thanks. Secondly could you also tell us how to do the Ryan Lochte underwater dolphin kick (if that’s what’s its call). That’s like my bucket list kinda thingy.

      That’s because it makes the pool 25 yards long. If they want to make the pool 25 meters they get rid of the area (it’s called a bulkhead btw).

    Hi Guys, I have a question about the Position of your feet at the wall.
    I am from Germany, and most of the swimmers over here are placing their feet closer together than you guys do.
    Can you tell me, what the benefits of your Placing are?
    Hope you can unterstand my English and help me out!
    Greetings from Germany :)

    • @PhlexSwim
      @PhlexSwim  6 лет назад +12

      Hello from the US! Thanks for your comment. The best way to think about the positioning of your feet on the wall is thinking of how efficient athletes are out of the water. If a basketball player were to try and jump as high as possible, they would have a wide foot placement as having feet close together wouldn't allow for much range of motion and strength. The idea is to have feet basically shoulder width apart and maybe test this with stationary jumps outside of the water.
