When I would do swimming I had trouble doing the flip turns. I would just touch the wall with my hands then push off with the wall with my feet not doing the flip at all. This was a great demonstration of the flip turn. Thanks Mandy :)
I was taught to use the hips when flipping. Once during a warm-up, in an "away"pool, I snapped my heels into the top of the pool edge, and split my heel wide open. Required a few stitches after the meet.
just started doing flips from watching YT vids and the "real" swimmers must be cracking up with some of them (they've probably gotten tired of watching my freestyle stroke)......kind of fun learning a new sport as long as you don't take it too seriously and try to have fun with it.
I have been playing around with the drill from Part 1, and specifically trying to do the flip turn with no arm pull at all. It isn't easy. Thus far, and I need '10,000 more times' as my martial arts instructor says, Speed is important, almost impossible from a stand still. A VERY strong dolphin kick helps accelerate your hips forward. The only way I can force my hands not to get involved is to keep them by my sides and on my bumm..... So much easier with the arm pull, and I can pretty much do a flip turn from a stand still that way.
Yes, the turn is powered by the core and hips which is probably why you feel a strong dolphin kick at the beginning. Glad it is all working out! 🙌🏽🏊🏼♂️
In the first flip turn I can see coach Mandy lifts her head slightly to look at the wall before starting te flip turn. I feel that it is hindering my turn, so do you look at the wall to determin where you are or at the bottom from the pool.... to determine if you start your tumble......
Another great tutorial, thank you very much. I seem to have difficulty in my approach to the wall with my breathing Coach Mandy, I get to the wall before I take a breath and end up gasping for air after I complete the turn virtually stopping. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
Thanks once again for the wonderful vid, Coach Mandy. My question is, for the open turn, we will most likely not reach and touch the wall with the same hand each time. (Or should we?) Does this mean we need to know how to do the open turn on both sides? Depending on which hand reaches the wall first?
Hi Leah! Yes, it just depends on what hand lands in but you'll start to typically land with the same hand. However, it is important to practice both sides so you are comfortable either way! -Coach Mandy👏🏊
Watched your flip turn 1 vid and tried in pool but found it hard with arms at side to generate tumble turn. Would end up sideways or half a turn. Thanks
The Technician only pull the arms to your side fully before the actual flip. If you pull at the same time you flip, you will end up crooked. You have to line up first then flip. 👍🏼 -Coach M
With the help of Coach M's 1st vid, what I did was put my arms to the side then allow myself to GLIDE forward with the momentum, before my head initiates the flip. I ended up facing forward each time.

Hi coach Mandy!!! Thank you for the videos! When I turn at the wall to move away from the wall I tend to sink lower , is that wrong technique?

Hi Freddy! Yes, control your exhale on the way into the wall. Slow, steady, and relaxed. Hope this helps! 🏊👏😀-Coach Mandy

As you initiate the turn, dropping your head down and pulling your knees to your chest rapidly will help keep you moving.

My lending position improved but my body is not roll push wall
