    Bru- you just saved me 1-2 seconds per turn, now that I'm not flapping my arms like a drunken chicken. Thank you. A million more flip turns left before I die, so this probably adds six months to my life.

    GAME CHANGER - I never knew this, and focused on palms down into the turn today ....... brilliant. My turns were so easy to complete and enjoyable, instead of being a hard slog to get out of..

    Hi Brenton, Thank you again for your teaching, ever so great. I am really struggling to flip-turn. the only thing I do correct is approaching the wall with my head; the rest is just chaos . I have tried using the boards as you suggested but still: my hands go everywhere, I do not turn correctly but just twisted. In very rare occasion I manage to gather my legs correctly but then I panic a little and mess it up. I believe there is a level of panic that stops me from doing it correctly. I wont give up as I used to do it 30 years ago (possibly incorrectly though) and I will keep trying. I am using all the advises and teaching from your account (I am a member of yours) and my swimming has improved tremendously. Thank you and I am really proud of it.

    Thank you for this video. It was a real game changer for me. I started doing flip turns when the pools were opened in Poland in early July, but instead improving I felt I couldn't make it tick and was actually regressing. But this little trick of reversing hands has done it! I've seen dozens of videos about flip turns, but none emphasized or even mentioned it. And it makes the real difference. Big thanks! I really enjoy your videos!

    Thank you! This is exactly what I’m doing wrong, my arms go out to the sides and palms are not down! I will do the drill to help correct it, another swimmer at the pool let me know what I was doing but I was having trouble changing my pattern and turning the hands, this drill should help me feel it better, I will give it a go!

    Am learning flip turn. Tried many times with arms in front but not succeeded. Watched your video yesterday and today tried with head first and I almost turned 180 degrees . tomorrow I will try with hands down. Will update after trying hands down. Thanks a ton..

    Great video, brilliant advice re rotating the hands. It's easier to use pull buoys over kick boards and they might be better for practicing rotating the hands (from palms facing up to down) during the tumble part

    The flipping over and being on your back, looking straight up, pushing off, and then turning... I find that it is just very hard to do versus flipping over and landing at around 45 degree placement. I think as long as your body is in alignment, meaning your torso not turning before you push off, you're not losing that much time. Getting into that tight streamline off the wall, way more important than the "perfect placement" on the wall... which probably only matters if you are a competitive age group swimmer where a tenth of a second here or there is going to make the difference.
    I felt super shamed for a while of not being able to "execute the perfect turn" for a long time. Practiced for countless hours trying to get that perfect position... and I was just finding against my body too much, my turns were getting sloppy, and I actually ended up pointing downward instead of pushing off straight. It seems like some people think that flipping and splashing a ton of water out of the pool is proper form. If your feet are coming out of the water enough to make huge splashes, you're not tucking tight enough and you're probably taking a lot of energy to execute your turn.

    THANK YOU !!! I’m so much better now ! I watched a few tutorials on this but yours was the most helpful because of going thru it in slow mo .... of course I watched this 4 times over a 2 weeks . But it’s now easier and faster to do . In saying that there’s a bit of streamlining I gotta do . Thank you

    Thank you for these tips! Such a small things and such a huge impact. I applied all the changes and it worked for me on the first try. I could also see the difference in the feel of water when I switched direction of my hand. I have been struggling with the turn for over two years. All this time, I thought I did something wrong with the breathing. Very happy :)

    I learned how to flip turn in New Zealand (I learned to swim as an adult while there) - and now I"m in the U.S.
    I gotta say - relearning how to flip turn to adjust to going to the right side of the lane - not the left is a nightmare. There is not much out there online about this and it's mind boggling b/c I gotta figure that it does come up with professional swimmers if they share lanes (U.K. v.s U.S.) at different competitions during warmups, etc. I've basically had to slow my turn down again b/c my muscle memory otherwise takes over. Slows down my times too... major bummer.

    How would you recommend timing the last breath and stroke before the flip? I’m running into the problem where I’m flipping too soon and not getting enough bend in the knee for a strong push off.

      i think of bragging at the t and then one stroke then flip i’m 5’5 so adjust as needed

      Don't breathe 2 or 3 strokes (how many strokes you breathe each side) before turning and experiment with your stroke count at easy, mod and max.

    There are a few who coach that the deltoid pull is more efficient than the bicep curl shown here. I use the bicep curl. A very few will try to tell you that using the arms is wasted motion, but if you catch any of the Olympic caliber swimmers, they all use an arm pull of some sort to add speed to the rotation. The biggest difference in what they do is their moves are much more subtle/smaller than what most of us more normal swimmers do....

    I didn’t know how horrible my flip turns were until I tried them with hand paddles. Became quickly obvious as I couldn’t even turn with my previous method. Which is why I’m here!

    I'm a beginner and I'm still learning to do the flip turn.
    Your video helped me figure out how to do the tumble - the first tumble took a long time and I would water "into my head".
    Now I can do the tumble with the hand-press, but I'm struggling in a way you haven't addressed.
    I fail to touch the wall after the tumble - I always seem to move away from the wall no matter where I start.
    I've tried this about 5 days now.
    But today's video at one point showed something that I provides a solution.
    I need to "dive" and tumble very close to the wall - as seen at: 5:02.
    Btw, can you shift your overlay screen or the main video so that you are not blocking the head of the swimmer's head as he does the somersault/tumble?
    It starts at 3:17.

    I dont know what it is, but regardless of whether i take a nice breath immediately before the turn, or if i take a stroke or two before I turn, I always seem to need a breathe before I can take a stroke after the turn. I was told that is the goal, to flip, glide, take a stroke and then breathe. any ideas why i can't seem to do that? My thoughts are 1. im mentally less relaxed than during the freestyle, where I can go 25 Yards with 2-3 breaths some times. 2. Doing more work than I need to by not doing the best technique 3. not considering the fact that using leg muscles to push requires much more breath, so maybe this is all just how it goes for me? Any thoughts? Thank you!

    As lockdown is over can you show me a better, slow view of the flip turn so I can teach it better. Especially of the hands going from facing up to facing down.

    Excellent advice and very well explained. You can spend a few months improving your stamina, technique, power in order to shave off a second or two from your race pace. Alternatively or ideally, simultaneously, you can spend a week perfecting your turns and achieve the same thing. I've always made more noticeable gains from technique tweaks (such as turns and drag reduction) than from the longer term stamina upgrades.

    I have tried sooooo many times and flips these past 3 weeks but when I keep my hands to my side, i get all twisted up and can't get back to streamline without my arms moving around.... any help would be EXCELLENT!

    Is it unwise to aspire to aspire to that "messier" higher cadence distance open water technique, whilst still learning freestyle? I don't care much about swimming smooth or pretty and would like to go faster for long, but wonder if it's like: learn the fundementals before advancing, (even if it looks the other way around). NB: Great vid as always.

    I'm 70 and just started swimming 500 yards every two days. Flip turns scare me as I feel like I'm losing control and have no breath. So I'm real slow as I don't use a flip turn. I have an in-door small pool 25 yards long.
