Freestyle flip turn in 3 steps

  • It is possible to learn the flip turn in one day, and Marianna is the proof. She had never done a flip turn before and after just one hour of practice, now she can. Just like her you just need patience, practice and maybe a nose clip.
As you probably know, the flip turn in freestyle helps you change directions quickly without having to slow down. This is a beginners guide on the fundamentals of a flip turn and we will go over more advanced tips on a future video.
We will do this flip turn tutorial in three steps.
*The first thing you need to know is that you need a good amount of air in your lungs to do the flip turn, for two reasons: you will blow out bubbles through your nose and you will push off the wall and move a few meters without breathing.
    First step - Flip
So before going to the wall practice doing a flip turn in the middle of the pool. Take a good breath and pretend that you want to kiss your knees. So burry your head underwater while you bring your knees close to your chest. Remember that you need to blow bubbles through your nose while you are upside down or else water will enter your nose. You can also use a nose clip to learn the movement and that way you don’t have to worry about many things at once. Also to speed up the turn, use your arms to push you forward and then to push water down so you can speed up the turn. Do several front flips until you can do them in a straight line.
Now before your body flips completely stretch yourself into a tight streamline. You will end face up. do that a few times. No to finish the movement twist your body after you are stretched out in a streamline so you end face down. Do that a few times so your body learns the movement.
    Step two - Landing.
The next thing you need to master is getting your feet to the wall in the correct position. The correct position is a few inches underwater in line with your body. If you push with your feet on the surface you will aim down and you will push downwards. If your feet are too deep you will aim up and you will push right up to the surface. So practice approaching the wall from the flags or a few steps behind and flip when you see the line where the floor meets the wall. Don’t push off yet. We are your practicing the landing.
    Step three - Turn
Now that you have mastered the landing is time to move on to the turn. Since you will end facing up you need to turn face down again. This is what you need to do: push off in a streamline while you twist your torso slightly. This will put you in the right position to do freestyle again!

(I coach Masters) One of the most important steps in the flip turn I see novices neglect, and coaches neglect to mention, is throwing water up over the head. This accelerates the tumble and places the hands above the head, prepared for streamline. My coach, decades ago, referred to this move as "splashing cold water from a sink onto the face." It's difficult to describe but you can see the author do it here at 0:50 and again at 1:53. Rather, I see amateurs and even Masters level swimmers who started swimming as adults, put the arms out wide like airplane wings and twirl them in an effort to tumble at the wall. The author here does the maneuver well but never mentions that he is doing it in the video.

I took an enormous time to learn this skill. The reason behind was, I practiced this always without a nose clip and ended up with lot of water inside my nostrils. I would highly recommend this to practice with a nose clip on and once you reached at a comfortable point after learning remove the nose clips. This will help for sure.

This is a great video. It was really nice to see an inexperienced swimmer going through the process. It can be intimidating for people to see top level swimmers with many years of high level coaching under their belts doing tutorials. I have been swim coaching and teaching for 17 years and love the simplicity demonstrated breaking the turn down to 3 easy steps. I do have a couple of tips for those who are getting water in their nose and ears. To stop water going up your nose you can either 1. Use a nose clip (I find them uncomfortable as i like to exhale through my nose when swimming), 2. Blow air out your nose during the turn, 3. Hum (you use less air humming compared with blowing air out your nose), or 4. Now this one isnt for everyone, but its what i and a good deal of experienced swimmers do. You cover your nose with your upper lip causing like a suction seal. You dont need big lips - in fact I had to teach my lip how to do it, but it works!. For those getting water in their ears, check that your cap is on properly and is comfortably covering your ears before starting your swim. Use ear plugs (after trying several different types unsuccessfully, I use blue tac). If you don't like ear plugs, then using an oil based swimmers ear drop before you swim wont stop the water going in, but it will protect the ear and help to get the water out later. A lot of people jump around to get the water out, but the best method i have found is to slowly tilt your head to the left then the right a few times.
