You open the video saying the game is pretty close to Bloodborne. And, aesthetically, you're not wrong. But it's definitely just as much Sekiro, perhaps mores-so, in regards to combat mechanics. It's like they took every mechanic from Bloodborne and Sekrio and mixed them together while changing up the quantity of the ingredients or when they get added into the mix. I made a list a while back and it's insane how many mechanics and crossovers are in the game. Hell, even the trick weapons are here and the Sekiro grapple.

I love how much of a love letter this is to fromsoft games.
I literally just came up an elevator from deep in the woods to return to the bonfire of that area.
An NPC said some weird shit them asked if there was a safe place to take refuge
I currently have a greatsword that just happens to have the weapon art of the blasphemous blade.
And I swear the animations are so close to bloodborne its ridiculous.
But the way they inckuded the perfect guards the fact you have to break posture THEN land a charged attack is so much deeper than pressing one button at the right time.
Then I put a goddamn FLAMING DAGGER blade onto a glaive handle for a longer flaming dagger weapon. Which is sick.

Honestly, while the game does bring it’s own spin on things, I have no problem with how much this feels like FromSoft. It’s like they carefully put Souls, Sekiro, and a healthy heap of Bloodborne into a blender with some of their own seasoning and cooked it to perfection. If you had told me FromSoft had made this game, I would have believed that lie (lame pun intended).
We get so few good soulslikes, and with FromSoft having a respectable souls schedule but still with a lot of downtime in between, getting something that cribs it so closely is actually amazing and I have no issues with this. They are the best for a reason, and this unknown studio has come the closest of any other to replicating the feel of their games. It’s quite a feat as so many others have failed. And since Sony is intent on letting Bloodborne rot, this really is the next best thing to a Bloodborne sequel we could ever ask for. Def have my eye on this studio moving forward. How they came from one failed mmorpg to this is truly astounding. And the game is well optimized to boot. Really awesome to see. Any fan of FromSoft, this is a must play. They hit all the right notes and it’s full of the same mystery, combat, secrets, and charm that we’ve come to love. With their own twist thrown in. A love letter to FromSoft, as many have said, and you couldn’t ask for a better one. We’ll see how Lords of The Fallen turns out, which is also looking excellent, and this could be the year of the Soulslike. Especially insane since FromSoft released Armored Core, also excellent, and studios picked up the slack for our souls fix. Couldn’t have worked out any better.

I would still highly recommend the game, but just know that you will have issues with several bosses. Also, the lying system is frustrating because I didnt even know I was lying. Some of the questions are formulated in such a way that even if you answer in an honest way it still counts as a lie. I didnt even understand that one of the options available was a lie until after I answered and I was given an ominous message about my gears. How can an honestly answered question be a lie? I hope they altered some things going from the demo i to the full game. I was positive about the game but had a few issues.
It felt like a Bloodborne clone in visual design, but it felt like a worse Sekiro in terms of gameplay. For bosses and larger enemies, the game expects you to perfect deflect their attacks and avoid damage and stay on the offensive to eventually break their posture/stance to open them up for a critical hit. My problem from the demo was multipart:
    1. Attack animations can't be cancelled with a guard, leading to less aggression as you need to give yourself a gap to react to enemy attacks.
    2. The stamina bar limits how aggressive you can be which is at odds with the expectation you need to be constantly attacking to both regain health like Bloodborne and break the enemy's posture like Sekiro.
    3. Sub-optimal guards are punished way too harshly, taking away chips of your health rather than a seperate posture bar like in Sekiro.
    4. The timer to regain health is too strict and you regain too little health per swing to make it worth it, if you take a hit from a basic enemy, you basically had to take him from 100 to 0 health to earn back that lost HPand if the enemy was at partial health already, then a full regain is impossible.

I'd agree with most of these. The other beef I have with the final game is the camera. More than once I've gotten trapped in a corner and beaten to death because even a "perfect" parry still results in stunlock and being pushed back. That means even a "perfect" defense can leave you stuck against a wall while the camera freaks out.

The demo for this left me pretty disappointed honestly. The gameplay felt quite sloppy when compared to its contemporaries, enemies were sluggish with wonky attack timings, and its own version of the 'rally' mechanic from Bloodborne incentivsed me to play more defensively (with hit and run and defensive poking) in order to regain charges for the healing battery as opposed to the rally in Bloodborne incentivising the player to rush back into combat to restore their health immediately. Overall I just thought it was okay, better than something like The Surge or whatever, but it could end up being something that I might play in a year or so when it goes on PS+.

At least with The Surge games, they brought their own interesting mechanics to the table like chopping off specific limbs to gain armor upgrades, the risk/reward of holding more "souls" giving you an attack buff, and directional parries instead of just your standard riposte. Nioh added stances. Mortal Shell did the shell hardening thing.. etc.

IMO the Diablo style loot is a more vital part of Nioh, especially the second game has some really bonkers set bonuses to go for (like the one that allows you to go into anima debt, which turns the strongest demon abilities a lot more viable)
Stats are a lot more boring than the ability combination shenanigas Nioh lets you mess around with, you can do some really drastic playstyle tweaks

@@GameDevYal Interesting. I didn't know that about Nioh. I ended up just sticking with a single armor set I liked by mid-game. I was more intriqued by the stances and which stances to choose based on enemy type or enemy stance switches. Made the combat much deeper and more strategic and it becomes this 1 on 1 game of who can get you to the tired state first for the big hit blow. Nioh even did this kinda thing before Sekiro.
I also really enjoyed Wu-Long even though it wasn't as polished and obviously more low budget.

Puppet King's second phase with his Melania bullshit was filtering me for 3 hours. I feel like the perfect block is incredibly unforgiving at times and could be a bit more lenient if it's how the game expects you to play since dodging/rolling punishes you more than it saves you from danger and should only be used situationally.

I just couldn't get into it. It's not hard if you're a souls vet but it is more frustrating as it tried to be everything From has made without any of the focus.
Enemies attack like Elden Ring but you sometimes need to deflect like Sekiro but your abilities are Bloodbourne but aggression is not rewarded. So what you have is a lot of counterintuitive design imo.
From always seems to try to build a game around central mechanics while this feels the reverse.
Like even though I really started to hate the enemy mechanics in ER I understood why it was like that as the game gives you way more overpowered options.
I just personally chose not to do those things since I never found it fun to call in help in these games or just blast my problems away with magic.
But in LIP, bc you can do everything, nothing is consistent or built around it. I wish they came up with their own unique gameplay loop and focused on that.

Great video! This game definitely gives me strong Bloodborne vibes, but I'd be surprised if it comes close to that masterpiece. I hope you someday get the chance to play Bloodborne, as that game is easily my favorite FromSoft game and one of my favorite titles of the 8th generation.
I've noticed that you tend to cover a lot of my favorite games, so I'm curious what some of your favorite games of all time are. Currently, this is my top 10:
    1. Deus Ex (2000)
    2. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000)
    3. Thief II: The Metal Age (2000)
    4. Thief: The Dark Project (1998)
    5. Planescape: Torment (1999)
    6. Disco Elysium (2019)
    7. Blood (1997)
    8. Persona 5 Royal (2020)
    9. Chrono Trigger (1995)
    10. Bloodborne (2015)

Honestly I wish more souls-like games would follow the footsteps of actual Souls games this closely. I end up disliking most souls-likes because they deviate too much from a borderline perfect formula and just end up feeling janky in one way or another. Just like Bethesda games I largely want the same thing each time with a different coat of paint, new items, and new bosses. That's it. However, I won't be getting this one, as much as I want to, since they decided to add Denuvo in last minute. To me that says they aren't confidant in their product being good enough to sell, so they wanted to surprise people with Denuvo last second. I'll wait half a year until it's either cracked or they remove it (since a lot of games seem to do that nowadays for whatever reason).

This basically a Bloodborune clone. Like it's good, but there's no point in copying FS to the letter. What's the point? Like no one is going to play this over the OG, so try to actually do something different. These games could use more deviation.

It felt a bit weird that the lies don't end up having more consequences in the story progression, apart from would-be enemies becoming definitely enemies; when you have characters who ask for your help to get to safety and you purposefully give them bad advice, there should be more reactions then just "You were mischievous! But okay, I forgive you". I can chalk this up to gameplay limitations due to the number of other inputs you'd have to add.
Furthermore, knowing that the True ending relies on the puppet telling only lies, what exactly is the game saying about attaining free-will - or growing up or the world - with this mechanic? Lie your ass off through life, that is what humanity is about; what the "new brother" of mankind is all about and that's why it beats the so-called next step in human evolution?
Personally, it shouldn't have been the amount of lies we tell but who, when and why we would say them: tell the lady in the quarantine zone that the puppet is her baby, tell Antonia that she still is as beautiful as her portrait or even Manus that what he is doing is positive BUT tell Geppeto he is a bad father, give Sophia peace, tell the puppet butler that puppets can love... Try to build a Pinnochio who is both a lier and a truth-teller who acts according to a sense of *humane* empathy and understanding, who therefore earns the ability to cry and the desire to help Sophia of his own volition.
P.S: Anyone else feel that "Lies of P" also fits well with Paracelsus?

Lies of P admittedly does souls very well but that’s all it is just another dark souls game.
