Hey peeps. This is my first review-type video, so hopefully I did the game justice. One thing I think I, and others, seem to have got wrong is the publisher/developer. I believe the developer is actually Round8 Studio, and Neowiz being the publisher. If this is the case I'll be sure to remedy this in build guides. Yes, there will be build guides!
Since I finished off the script for this vid (everything's moving very fast with this game, so I drew the line then), the developer has already announced a big update is being worked on, and has committed to a roadmap for the game's future. They did all of this in the apologetic tone usually reserved for AAA studios when they've released a broken mess, when in fact, they've smashed it out of the park with this one. Love this studio and can't wait to see what's next. Hope you like the vid!

the runbacks to the mini bosses are actually extremly short , there is a trick to it wich is a bit wierd , usually the shortcut is very close but AFTER the mini boss so what you have to do is: run past the boss , and unlock the shortcut and then come back to fight him when you have the shortcut or next checkpoint unlocked

Then I have to say, you really should try Elden Ring, Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro. Lies of P though is influenced the most by Bloodborne. Unfortunately it's still a 30 FPS game. Bloodborne is my favorite game of all time, and the game Lies of P was mostly influenced by. Other than the 30 FPS, *everything in Bloodborne holds up today. But yeah do yourself a favor and check of FromSoft games. If you really enjoy them, go back and play DS1 and 2. They just don't quite hold up as well.

My only parry issues we’re against nameless puppet in phase two. With all the red and yellow moving lines around him it was almost impossible to see when the attacks were going to connect. Pretty much the rest of the game outside of a few attacks you can dodge instead of parry, just makes the fight take a little longer.

Lies of P was my first ever soulslike game and it honestly became like a drug. For the first time in a very long time I had a game I was looking foward to playing after work. This game felt amazing in every category because to me I had no frame of reference for the parry system and it honestly felt hard but balanced and rewarding at the same time. It is because of this game that I have discovered a love for an entirely new genre of game and I cannot wait to dive into more

Oh man, I'm kinda jealous. You have so many fantastic games to make your way through now. I dont think I have to recommend the original FromSoft games to you though.
You might want to start with something like Dark Souls 3 instead of Elden Ring though. Just so you can get a feel for the original gameplay formula, narrative and style. I think this will make you appreciate Elden Ring a lot more. As you will be able to appreciate the leap from the original Dark Souls series to Elden Ring. It will also make you a lot more familiar with the themes and narrative elements that are shared across basically all of From Software's soulslike games (Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring).
Also if you immediately jump to playing Elden Ring, you will essentially be playing the best the entire genre has to offer. While I'm sure you would still enjoy it, you'd miss out on a lot that would make you enjoy it even more. And also, everything else will end up feeling like a bit of a downgrade 😅.
Dark Souls 3 should also be new enough that it still looks and feels modern/good to control. The original Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 can feel a bit old and clunky these days. Especially since your first experience was Lies of P which is probably the best soulslike ever made, when it comes to specifically the technical quality and performance/optimization.

I am also rather a beginner in this genre, 7 hours in and so far it is the best souls(like) game for me period. 110 hours into Elden Ring and having peaked both into DS1 and Sekiro, I think Lies of P easily wins for me (within the mentioned time window I know) - I think the fighting is the best I have seen so far, really a perfect blend of the best souls games. DS 1 is not for me since it's all about the invincibility roling, which I find a bit ridiculous and unimmersive as hell. Sekiro I would like but bumped off very quickly due to it's difficulty.. somehow I find it a lot easier to get into Lies of P.
So far I think the difficulty is perfect, one small boss I had close to 10 tries, but the rest I killed in 1-3. I hope it does not get much harder though, that would spoil the great story, lore and game progression a bit for me.

I'm at halfway through and it was the archbishop for me. In my 7 years of playing soulslike games this was the only boss where I said "I've had enough" and summoned the spectre then the boss went down on the first try. The game is hard enough as both parry and dodge is harder to pull of compared to Sekiro and Bloodborne but I only have 5 heals for a 2 health bar boss fight.... That stopped being fun after 50 minutes of suffering. Not to mention attacks are a million times harder to read in this game compared to most soulslikes.
Too many boss attacks fall into this category where the first part of the attack is delayed then the delivery is insanely quick so it's impossible to react properly for the first few times and it becomes a memory game.

The problem with the parry system isnt necessarily the window itself, though it is stupidly brutal, but the lack of intuitive telegraphing and the position of that window, time wise. Enemies will do Elden Ring style long wind ups and then the actual follow through will be blazing fast. The window in ER is at the apex of the windup PLUS the very short time you see the arm/weapon start to move forward, in LoP the window is small and only at the apex of the windup which isnt fair. You can only parry by knowing the timing vs actual visual cues, and thats not good design IMO. You shouldnt *have* to get pummeled several times until you learn the exact timing of the attacks, you should be able to see the windup and reasonably tell when to parry first time around.
If they added just a little bit of extra telegraphing, the balance in parry vs dodge would remain and you'd make it more fair/accessible. As it is, it feels a little cheap. Still a fantastic game.

    • @reaperanon979
      @reaperanon979 Год назад +6

One of the things that makes it worse is the fact that you have to be holding block when you're getting hit. A half second buffer window for blocking helps a lot already.
With the parry window being as short as it is, the time it takes to release and then re-press the block button is way too long, that's why in Sekiro if you press block and you miss the deflect you still get to block the attack without holding the key.
The other thing with such precise timings is that it makes your hardware a super important factor in your gameplay. You gimp yourself by playing it on a TV, while using a high refresh rate and low latency monitor and playing at 144 fps makes parrying actually rather easy. Disabling vsync also helps a lot.
I believe that's why FromSoft made the deflect window in Sekiro longer, they're used to developing for console and console players tend to play on TVs which have garbage latency.
About the wind-up thing, I think wind-up is absolute cheap garbage and makes the game play and feel horrible. I hate DS3 and Elden Ring for that very reason. Lies of P does better on that front in most fights with moves actually being smoothly animated and having realistic dynamics, but that sadly goes out the window for the most part in the later bosses.

I can totally agree with this parry timing is easy once you get it down but for all the bosses it's literally impossible to just party and react the first time and you have to get hit multiple times before you get the feel of it. But I definitely think it's made less bad since blocking is really strong and you can just block a move the first few times to get the feel of it before you try to parry it

20:44 the run backs aren’t even that bad. You said there was only 1 run back that was fine when like all of them are except for the 2nd black brother hood fight and maybe the scrapped watchman. Parade master is like extremely close. For fuoco you can literally run past all of the enemies and they will just go back to where they were. For arch bishop Andreas he is quite close as well especially because of the shortcut. For the black brotherhood boss fight 1 you can literally just run past everyone. For the king of puppets he is in front of you after you get the shortcut. For the swamp monster he is also quite close with no enemies. For corrupted parade master it is the same as the parade master run back just a slight bit longer. Laxasias runback is extremely short since it it right in front of you and Simon manus he is also in front of you.
Edit: I forgot to include the door guardian who is really the only one who has a bad runback

  • @ClydeNut
    @ClydeNut Год назад +164

The thing that is really annoying about the perfect guards above and beyond the strict timing is that certain elite enemy and boss attacks will knock you back a good distance even if you perfect parry them, forcing you to waste time and stamina running back to the enemy, preventing a punish window and giving the enemy more time to recover and rev up another attack. I’m on the King of Puppets and I have all his parry timings down for the most part but half of his fucking attacks will *still* knock you back when perfect guarded. Getting punished like that for executing your parries consistently feels awful, and having to constantly get back into attack position afterward is incredibly annoying!

I think this is exactly where the "Lies of P is all about perfect guarding" logic can make life harder. • @ClydeNut
      @ClydeNut Год назад +8

@@ThingfishyGaming that doesn’t explain why the red fury attack in the King of Puppets’ first phase, which you literally cannot dodge and *have* to parry, ALSO knocks you back. I do get the idea though, mixing dodging and parrying is probably the way to go, but imho “let’s give certain otherwise easily parryable attacks a knock back effect” was a bad way of teaching the player that lesson. Also this is not an issue at all with the Archbishop, which I loved because it was a large boss that still was pretty easy and very fun to parry, and even his big belly slams don’t knock you back when guarded. The problem I’m having with King of Puppets is that if every attack can be consistently parried, there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be able to go with that strategy. The knock back effect I keep complaining about is this totally arbitrary thing that just elongates an otherwise engaging fight. Anyhow great review thingfishy I was just malding about this issue earlier and was wondering if anyone else could relate, lol

As someone who has dabbled in Souls games over the years but never beat one due to multiple reasons, this game is one of my favorite games of all time.
It took me almost 2 months of playing here and there an hour or two when I got the chance to finally beat this game and wow.. I’m so glad I stuck with it. By day 2 I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to do it, but the game kept drawing me back. Like you mentioned, once combat “clicked” for me I couldn’t play anything else.
I still got smashed consistently time after time (my wife can attest to the rage this induced at times 😂) but after finally beating each boss it was so rewarding.
I may get hate for not being a fanboy for the series but I can confidently say I am gonna go back and try Dark Souls and Elden Ring and actually try and beat them this time.
Not sure how many people get introduced to those games through this game, but I’m not mad about it at all.

Honestly this game felt great for me for the most part. My main complaint being the mini-bosses just felt incredibly overtuned and their runbacks were annoying as hell. Luckily many of the mini-bosses late game are reskins or exactly the same as previous ones. The bosses were very challenging but never felt unfair, until I reached the final few bosses. I struggled a lot with the deflect timing throughout the game and it felt like you needed to deflect to beat these bosses. Where as many of the previous bosses dodging was a super viable strategy. In combination with their ridiculously fast moveset, high health, and insane damage they just felt completely unfair and I really didn't enjoy any of them. Bosses like the Archbishop and King of Puppets were brutally difficult but I felt like they were fair when I ended up finally beating them. After I beat the final three bosses I was like "F-ing finally" because they just weren't fun. Theres a fine line between difficult and fun and difficult and and absolute nightmare. I felt like these bosses were specifically designed to just be insanely difficult without balance in mind. Especially the first main one in the final area. This boss just felt like they designed it to be bullshit and annoying. The first phase was hard enough, then the second phase was even harder and more bullshitty.

I definitely have a few criticisms.
Pretty much every boss after a certain green fella is too hard. They're all doable, with some luck, but I have spent literally 30-40 tries on some of them and leaves you feeling like the skill needed to beat the boss is unattainable.
The reason is the perfect block system. Yes, it is necessary to widen that window, because the bosses force you to perfect block, especially the late game ones. They all do a crazy combo, rest for one second, then do another combo. There is no chance to recover stamina unless you perfect block.
The bosses also have false telegraphs, no telegraphs and extremely delayed telegraphs on most attacks which are intended to throw you off your block game. That means you have to rely on reflexes to get those necessary perfect blocks, but unfortunately the boss attacks are faster than you can raise your weapon. This in turn means you have to predict attacks, not react to them, but you can't predict a lot of them, creating a circle of problems.
The damage a boss can do is ridiculous. Even with high HP most bosses you fight are capable of killing you in one combo, or two heavy strikes. So failure to predict attacks for perfect blocks results in most of your health bar dipping out.
Lastly, and this is a big one, the ergo economy. I never felt like I could properly grind levels to overcome a boss. You can't backtrack a bit and just kill enemies who gain enough ergo to make it worth your while, because even late game enemies only drop 1-300 ergo. The larger ones only drop 1500. That makes grinding for that 16k level up a chore. And leveling up once barely produces results, so if you need to grind for levels to beat a difficult boss, be prepared to do a LOT of grinding. It can take hours to see results.
In short, the game is really terrific, until late game, when all of the little issues start piling up and ruin the experience.

The reward for parrying is literally its major problem.
Parried attacks can still stun you in place. You receive no bonus reward beyond keeping your hp (gee thanks game) and potentially staggering a boss once per phase. It's just really dumb how they punish you for blocking, but barely reward you for engaging in parrying. Hell, even ripostes after stagger breaks don't even do much damage. The only mass benefit it serves is cutting down their regain HP, which is another dumb mechanic that shouldn't be in the game as it only furthers the egregious length of punishing blocking, and taking the piss when it comes to rewarding parrying

One of my biggest complaints with this game is that it doesn't really have any "boss cool down" areas. Like whenever I hit a particularly frustrating boss in the game, there's never another area I can go visit that potentially has another boss to fight, some enemies to farm, items/upgrades to discover, etc. The game's levels are all one after another so if you get stuck on one then you're gonna bash your head against that boss until it breaks, which heavily contributed to me burning out in the final quarter of the game. These types of games NEED side areas that allow players feel like their progress isn't 100% halted if a boss is too hard. Not asking for an Elden Ring sized world (cuz that's ridiculous) but Bloodborne and the Souls games all generally had branching levels that let you explore different places if you ever felt stuck.

The Parry Window isn’t the problem although it is strict. The issue is that boss’s will have 3 second delays and then 2 frame down swings. Parrying in these games require observation of boss’s animations and keying in on telegraphed moves. Even in Elden Ring boss’s delayed attacks still had natural animations where you can at least follow a boss’s attacks. Not in this game since attacks give you no time to observe. It feels cheap because you’re not rewarded by following the flow of combat but by memorizing attack patterns and guessing the timing

I feel like they could double the parry window and it wouldnt hurt the game. Parrying is often too risky to be worth the reward, hence why so many players are running and dodging around mid and late-game bosses rather than parrying.
Clearly the devs want you to parry; it builds stagger, it destroys enemy weapons, it activates a 20% damage bonus when you're wearing the right amulet etc, but its too hard for many players and the cost of getting it wrong is brutal. If you miss a parry in the middle of Laxasia's 13 hit combo, you're toast.

To be honest, this is a top 3 soulslike to me, including fromsofts games. It really clicked for me about halfway. The game doesn’t want you to parry everything, nor does it want you to dodge everything. The game wants you to learn the moveset and pick two to three attacks you’re confident you can parry, and dodge or otherwise avoid the rest. Build up that stagger meter and punish whenever possible. This game is the most beautiful blend of all the combat systems in souls games with its own twists. With p-organs, weapons, legion arms, and amulets there are sooo many play styles that are equally powerful at your disposal. The game perfectly encapsulates what a boss fight is supposed to be. It’s a test. They don’t rely on insane damage output nor extremely tanky healthbars or hyper aggression and speed to be difficult. They’re purely just unique and must be learned. Could they adjust the parry window a few frames? Yeah, but it definitely shouldn’t be on the level of sekiro as that would make parrying a one size fits all situation which I think would ruin the blend that this game has.

I feel like a lot of people who say the game is hard didn't play Sekiro, because the game realies heavily on guard and perfect guard, dodging is not your best defensive option. Once you realize that the game gets pretty easy. I'm not really that good at souls games I summoned my whole play through of Elden Ring and I can barely defeat Malenia with a Mimic, but in LoP I didn't use the npc summon because it made boss attacks harder to predict therefore harder to perry, the perry is a great defensive and offensive tool and it made the game so incredibly satisfying to play and beat.

My only issue is how linear it is. In other souls games, there's something else to do when you're frustrated with a boss. In this game, it's fight the boss or grind an already explored area

I absolutely blow at Soulslike games. Played ds1 and 2 for a collective 3 hours. Put a decent amount of time into ds3 but my friend who bought me the game carried me though 4 of my playthroughs while teaching me how to play. Didn't even last an hour into Bloodborne.
But this? I just started playing it on Monday and I already have about 42 hours in. I love it. This game feels way less unfair than any souls game, I very rarely ever feel like I'm being cheated or I died unfairly.
Biggest bumps in the road for me were Fuoco, Swamp Monster and that fuckin jester down in the wine cellar. The designs for the Black Rabbit Brotherhood are perfect imo. This game fucks. To anyone that doesn't like Soulsborne games, I urge you to give this one a try.

This is the best FromSoft game that isn't a FromSoft game. The only FS game I put above this is Bloodborne (I haven't played Sekiro). I'm more excited for the sequel to this than I am any other game coming out soon. It was so frustratingly difficult, but every death, I knew where I messed up. I could pinpoint the timing issue, or the missed dodge exactly and it always ended up feeling fair to me. I can't say the same about all FromSoft games, except Bloodborne which fills in the same area as Lies of P. It's my GotY, easily.

Finishing my New Game Plus Plus run tomorrow. I absolutely love this game. The combat, the build variety, the touching characters and story. It's a surprising masterpiece that I originally picked up only for "Bloodborne but with cute twink". I recommend this game to everyone. Those who love a challenge, those who love a story, and those who just love some cool music and fashion.

I'm making my way through the game. Loving it so far. 10/10. My only complaint is that bosses in this game can be pretty BS and feel too difficult. The best one was Victor. The rest is often "learn delayed rhythm by heart". The telegraphs are all over the place and the perfect parry window is atrocious and that's coming from someone who played and finished almost every souls and FromSoftware game. The 2nd phase of Green Monster is just bad.

The game was too difficult for me. I gave up at the Puppet Master yesterday, so imagine my joy when I heard that a patch has been releases today to make the game easier, including a Puppet Master nerf. Hope renewed. Hurrah! (I'll probably still get annihilated.)

Having small parry window is manageable and it just takes patience. The times where you cannot see the attacks however are far too many in this game. Either because the boss is too big or because there is too much visual clutter. What makes it especially bad is that the game leans on this on quite a few bosses. Otherwise a great game 8/10.

Great review and great video. I pretty much agree with everything you said here. I chose to play with a pure parry playstyle, and let me tell you learning some of the late game boss attack patterns (looking at you, sword and shield person) was soooooo satisfying. I honestly rank the combat system (if not the whole game overall) higher than DS2 and possibly even DS3.
As for the question of it being too hard, I think the first patch 1.2 that came out after this video addressed some of the outliers and problems. For the most part you can get by with learning a boss just enough and using consumables/throwables. The throwable items are EXTREMELY strong, and they even included a summon mechanic for people to use if that's their jam as well. The fact that you couldn't outright cheese or over-level your way through bosses and the game forced you into learning the fight is what I most like about these games, and Lies of P hit it so well.
Also shoutouts to all the content creators posted in the description. Seeing you around on twitch in a few places makes me realize we have a lot of taste in common lol

I'm super impressed that this is your first review. You nailed it. Put everything i feel about this game into words perfectly, and i agree with pretty much everything said, which is rare. It obvious you put a ton of thought into what makes ganes good. The depth of understanding what makes a good game is so rare in reviews these days, and I love the categories you broke it up into. I wish all games were reviewed like this. The only thing more I would like to say about the game that you didn't mention directly is how impressive the level of detail in the environments is. I found myself constantly admiring the little details in the architecture and interior design of some of the grander buildings. It did a ton to paint the picture of a once prosperous society fallen into disaster. It's similar to how Gears of War 1 made me feel.

I would absolutely love wider parry windows. I finished the game, but I have to admit that I got really frustrated and almost dropped it quite a few times. I second the notion that it would open up the game to a broader audience. I also see absolutely no problem with difficulty settings. You don't need an easy mode, but some tweaks like parry would be very welcome, like that parry window size or maybe game speed in general - think of players with disabilities, for example. Have an achievement for players who do it without any of the tweaks (I seem to remember Steelrising adding this in later with a patch?) if you want to please the hardcore fans - no harm done.

As a «souls veteran» (I know, cringe) I thought the difficulty was perfect, and I wouldnt want it changed at all. If it were any easier I think I would have beaten most bosses on my first attempt.
Even the hardest boss of the game it only took me 5 tries but when I finally experienced that adrelaline from beating a hard boss it was awesome, and that can’t be replicated if the game was too easy.

Puppet King finally made me break down and install a mod to tune down the damage and it made a world of difference. Suddenly I was able to actually lean the boss' patterns instead of getting flattened in two hits and being send back to an annoying runback. I love the presentation and worldbuilding, but the developers seem to have learned the wrong lessons from Elden Ring's second half.

I also loved reading all the pick ups, plaques, and posters to gain insight on the lore and the story progression. It was done super tastefully imo and I was never to the point of just skipping the text to get on with the combat. It was plentiful enough to get its lore and point across without being overbearing and a slog to get through. One of my Fav games now. The atmosphere and the familiar yet twisted and new take on an old classic was just brilliant and I can’t wait to see what these developers do next. Especially with the ending😉! Superb job NeoWiz and Round8! You have gained a huge fan!
