I always hated the "Want a story, buy a movie!" argument. Because how _DARE_ people expect game developers to actually tell a story with their medium, right?
It's an MMO and anyone who plays an MMO, they should know better than that. Story and lore are the key points of large games like Destiny, Warcraft, etc. Hell from what I've heard, Overwatch has more of a story than Rise of Iron.
And to respond to your response to the "Beast Inside 3"'s argument. You should see Team Fortress 2's playerbase, they expect you to have played a thousand or more hours in order for your opinion to be valid.
A film doesn't have a gameplay element,you have to focus more on the story in order to have a good film,but a game can compensate for this with better gameplay.

Destiny promised stories and gameplay compelling even better than Halo, but they just said ah f it. For example Overwatch,Tf2 They have animated shorts that actually have a decent story with funny characters,and good writing

For people who say that "you can't have an mmo with a good story", I'd like to point you to Star Wars: the Old Republic. Has a better story than both Destiny games, and more mmo elements as well. Destiny 1 and 2 really have no excuse to be the way they are.
