What I don’t get is why they didn’t make the plot about Sherlock accidentally killing someone and then being hired to solve it. That is untapped comedy gold
Bruh that could be goood
Heck, it could be the Queen, like IHE said. She either could die for real, or just be unconscious the whole movie, or be a body double that just died of natural causes but both idiots are convinced they murdered her...
The possibilities are vast!
Just reading your comment gave me a decent idea of what could come out of that scenario, and I’m shit at coming up with jokes.
You see, that IS untapped comedy gold. Problem is Hollywood(tm) won't tap anything because that's too much effort.

Honestly, a film about an idiotic Sherlock and stupid yet well-meaning Watson trying to hide the body of Queen Elizabeth after killing her by accident, while a highly skilled and more competent detective and sidekick played by Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan try to find out what happened sounds like a really solid Sherlock film
THE STORY WAS RIGHT THERE
Elizabeth? Really? It's called the Victorian era, come on now... really not hard.
@@KuueenKumi shut up we all know that elizabeth is the only queen of england that has ever existed because she is immortal
@@thevoidwalkerbr yeah, you cant hide your immortal queen from us, we know about her
You never name anyone but you frame it like they're Sherlock and Watson and then it turns out the antagonists are Sherlock and Watson and the dummies are just rich nobles who usually solve "mysteries" set up by their servants.
@@mitchellhorton9382 beautiful
a duck face selfie isn’t exactly riveting social commentary.
@thenerdtosee Hahahah best reply ever
Though, to be honest... A Victorian era "selfie stick" joke wouldn't be all that bad of an idea, given how that was a time of large-scale innovation and progress in itself. And the idea of some self-photographing device would likely just seem like one of the more eccentric forms of experimental technology at the time.
If the movie came out in 2015 it would’ve been more relevant; not funny but relevant
It's not a terrible joke in-and-of-itself, it's just ruined by:
1. The fact that it's been almost a decade since people were making fun of "duck face" selfies
2. Ferrell's platypus line, which doesn't make sense (they had ducks back then!) and seems to just be there because it's a weird word to say.
3. The way that, like a lot of bad SNL-style American comedy, it takes a really simple joke and stretches it out for far too long.
There are a few gags like that in the movie that *almost* work, but completely sabotage themselves because the people involved had no restraint and seemed to think that 'more'=funny.
@@retrogamelover2012 That would've been funny. A good set up would've been to have Watson and Holmes see someone attempt to take a photograph with one of those "Selh-photographing devices," and have Holmes make a joke like "I'll never understand the common man's desire to capture every piece of mundaneity in a photograph." And as Watson would try to explain it, the device's pole breaks and the photo is ruined.

Why does it feeling like comedy movies these days are more about the actors having fun on a massive budget than about being funny?
clearly, they are not making films for the audience, but for themselves
Yesss!I think its fun when you can tell the actors had fun filming and genuinely care (*cough Supernatural cough cough*) but when it feel like they didn't care if the audience enjoyed it and blew millions of dollars to goof off...its not fun.
Don't worry. Movie studios aren't printing money anymore because of COVID-19. They'll have to be more discriminating of the scripts they greenlight now

They either don't want to pay writers or nobody can write comedy anymore

Will Ferrell is turning into Mike Myers where his shtick is good at first but it soon becomes tiring when more and more films with the same setup are released.
Funilly enough, both of their arguably best performances are both Dreamworks characters who go from bad to good.
@uNnHkP8mza No
Well, Myers is anathema in Hollywoke and all it takes is one total bomb to destroy a career....so yeah
That’s literally every SNL actor
Mike Myers downfall is a bit different he kind had a ego with always being the center of attention in his comedy projects or snl that the other actors arent giving much to do .
Will Ferrell was in a great serious movie where, unknowingly, he is the main character in a book being written by an accomplished writer with writer's block, though it all takes place in the real world. I can't recall the name of it, but I enjoyed it when I really didn't think I would.
Stranger than Fiction! It was jarring seeing him in a more serious movie at first but I thought he did great in it. He really nailed playing a serious role while still keeping some aspects of comedy.
@@grodeejodee9815 I loved that movie too! A great movie and a great performance from Will Ferrell. Completely agree, it was a bit strange, seeing Will Ferrell in a slightly more "serious", but still funny movie. I didn't know if he could do it at first, but as the movie went on, I was impressed by how talented Will Ferrell could be, WITHOUT constantly screaming his head off. But, as a kid, I also enjoyed his role in "A Night At The Roxbury", which was a bit serious too, and sorta like a proto Step Brothers type movie, but that movie's ok, but Stranger Than Fiction is like a more dramatic comedy, but is more of a drama. But I did like how Ferrell stepped out of his comfort zone to do something more dramatic. One of his best roles. But, then, he sadly returned to doing a lot more manchild comedies. Which actually can work in some instances, I mean, Step Brothers is pretty funny and dramatic in some places, and is relatable, but as much as I like Will Ferrell and John Reiley, their chemistry doesn't work for this particular movie. It's just like they're trying to do an unfunny parody skit of the Robert Downey Jr. And Jude Law Sherlock Holmes and Watson, not actually trying to be a funny version of either character, but since both Downey and Jude Law were ALREADY pretty funny in their Sherlock Holmes movies, was there any need for the Step Brothers to basically cosplay as them, or play as the British ancestors of the Step Brothers? I mean, surely, there must've been a better way to reunite the Step Brothers, than by ruining the great Sherlock Holmes's and Watson's characters? No? Oh well. I still enjoy Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as actors, occasionally, like in Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Zoolander, Step Brothers, Stranger Than Fiction, those, are still some of Will Ferrell's and John Reiley's best roles. But, Sherlock is not a good role for him, this time anyways. If you wanted to see this done right, why not just go and watch the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies? Those still hold up well, or, why wouldn't you go and watch Hot Fuzz(like someone in the comments suggested). That's ALSO a great movie, with 2 British guys, trying to solve mysteries, with a slightly dark comedic setting, and both characters have great chemistry together too, and both lead actors(Simon Pegg as Nick Angel and Nick Frost,), are doing a great job, and have also worked together on other movies like Shaun of the Dead, The World's End, and are basically just really good at playing both dramatic and funny roles. Sorry if this went off-track or went on too long.

The worst part is that Hugh Laurie, a comedian who is best known for playing a character heavily based off of Sherlock Holmes, plays a minor character when he could have made a much better Sherlock.

You would think "Sherlock Homes but comedy" would be an easy movie to make.
honestly most comedic takes I've seen on Sherlock Holmes utterly miss the point of the appeal of Holmes stories, usually as a direct result of making Holmes 'funny'.
Honestly I think the proper way to do it would be to have Sherlock and Watson play things entirely straight but set them against a case that is utterly ludicrous in every respect.
Yeah, if you care.
Sir Michael Caine and Sir Ben Kingsley managed to do it
@@SavageGreywolf Yeah, at the very least there needs to be some modicum of wit. Slapstick doesn't cut it in that setting.

Arent modern christmas traditions from germany?
@@insertmemorableusernameher6795 They are a mix, but I'd say in the UK and US they are mostly English traditions (with some German traditions via UK which where taken to the USA; most of these coming from the fact the Royal Family were partly German); and there is a tiny bit from the Dutch (via New Amsterdam/New York) and French.
I'd say that (the US name) Santa Claus despite his name being from Dutch owes a lot more to the English Father Christmas than the Dutch Sinterklaas or German Nikolaus, Christkind or Krampus (amongst others).
The French Père Noël is quite similar also.
Obviously the US has more influences from outside the UK than the UK itself, where I am based.
A lot of traditions we take for granted now were also popularised by 'A Christmas Carol' by the English author Charles Dickens.
Mike Hancho people think die hard is a Christmas movie not cause it’s “vaguely released at the same time of year” but Because it takes place on Christmas Eve and the plot takes place at an office Christmas party and there are many Christmas decorations visible throughout the movie and Bruce Willis himself references that’s it’s Christmas time by dressing up corpse as Santa and through some of the one liners and there are a few Christmas songs in the soundtrack. It’s very obviously intending itself to be a Christmas movie
@Mike Hancho Die Hard is a Christmas movie. It is set at Christmas. It has Christmas songs. It makes heavy references to Christmas. It's even about family, which is a classic theme of Christmas movies.
Christmas movies don't have to always be family-friendly comedies with heartwarming "Aw, look how generous these people are!" moments. They can also be action movies about fighting terrorists to rescue your estranged wife.

The interviews for this movie encapsulate why I can’t sit through late-night talk show interviews or press junket interviews. They comes across as so artificial and awkward.
well they are a contractual obligation. no one WANTS to do them
You're right!! It's "work" for the person being interviewed. Having to sit down with a person you most likely don't know and they expect the actor to be charming and funny. That's gotta be harder than it seems; especially for actors who have anxiety disorders... Most comedic actors!!
That's why I can't stand hollywood in general. EVERYONE is fake. No successful actor you will ever meet has a genuine personality. They all wear masks, all of them. It makes talking to them an uncanny experience, you just feel like something's...off. If feels very artificial, because it is. I saw this movie in theaters with my then girlfriend and after that showing we just went down hill now I'm not saying this movie kills love but it defiantly didn't help
Hahahaha bro same thing for my ex and that movie Keanu the cat
Same with Jumanji 2
Oof
I almost had a stroke reading this
Mate that sucks
Finally a new one! Man have I missed you. Hope all is well, and thanks for the amazing content.
with modern comedies, I've kind of given up hope on them, so I don't get hurt like how I do with modern animated movies or live action remakes. I just accept that they're bad, and I can live with that.
but at 6:10 hearing Reilly say "this reminds me of a Mel brooks movie" genuinely breaks my heart a little. Mel brooks is in my opinion one of the most disgraced artists, people abusing his name and work to excuse trash, completely disregarding what makes him and his work brilliant. and hearing his craft, his genius being compared to something like this is genuinely repulsive. the fucking audacity of these people trying to sell this as a modern mel brooks movie. I dont usually get offended on other people's behalf, but this is an exception. thank god this movie tanked, and this mentality isn't being rewarded.
That onion scene could easily be at least mildly amusing if holmes were the only manchild. He eloquently explains they increase your blood cell count, but then he bites the onion recklessly and starts making a sour face, watson says "holmes i can cut it up for you, spit it out!" then holmes says no all muffled like the stubborn baby he is and then they start futzing around with eachother and bam theres a punchline.
But i guess both of them just eating onions like apples was the wacky grosser option.
The great comedy teams of the past knew how to do this. You had the funny guy and you had the straight man. It seems to be a lost art in Hollywood. Comedians compete with each other instead of cooperate.
@@NotAHandle22 i dont think its a lost art, its widly still recognized as a basic comedy method lol. I think its mainly the two actors being given way too much room to do whatever they want. Plus their style in general doesnt fit holmes and watson in the first place.
The general premise of manchild Holmes COULD be funny, if he was still intelligent in crime solving and his partner was a good straight man. Watch one trailer for this movie and it's immediately clear neither of those things were true
@@chuckbatmangaming You need to see the movie «Witout a Clue». It did basically this premiss. Well Holmes was basically just the front man while Watson was actually the brains of the opperation, but it worked.
@@MissCaraMint Eh. Thats kind of dissapointing. Id prefer to see a movie with a humorous parody holmes that's still intelligent.
Like if him plotting to swat the mosquito was him perfectly timing a swing to knock it into an approaching mans mouth to avoid any mess or something. And then as the guys wretching and gagging in the background holmes just purses his lip and says "perfect". Meanwhile watsons in another room yelling for him to put the golf club down and to let him get a napkin to kill it.
I dont know why i keep thinking of better versions of this movies scenes lol
I took my mother to England for a holiday and one of the palaces she really wanted to visit was partly closed because they were shooting scenes from this movie there. she was sad, but tried to save the mood by saying "well at least we can check out the movie once we get home". I googled it and never let her watch it to spare her the disappointment.
My parents saw this movie together when it came out in theaters. And according to them they both separately fell asleep and woke back up at different times during the film.
Every single actor in those clips who were trying their hardest to sell people on this movie looked like they were being held at gunpoint.
The difference is, Horrible Histories is actually good.
I Agree
It certainly is, I'm so glad I discovered it. AND it's educational!
dude i read the shit out of those books in primary school
I dont like the new cast. But the old cast were great.
hoooooooorible historieeeeeeees
Will Ferrell template: Act like an idiot for an hour while bouncing off another guy who acts like an idiot
and get paid a fuckshitton of money
There are times that can work like in elf but other times, it really doesn’t so to me, he is very hit and miss.
@@henith7850 I still believe Elf is the only good Ferrell movie.
@@henith7850
Probably because in Elf, Will Ferrell was the only truly insane character in that movie. Everyone else balanced out his character by being more rational, even the elves were more serious in their own weird way. The mail room scene was one of the only times the other character played along with Buddy and that was because alcohol had a part in it.
And on the other hand John C. Riley is on the other spectrum, he plays an idiot but has incredible range.
I find it funny that anyone even attempts a Sherlock Holmes comedy anymore when anything you could do was already done in Without A Clue and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother.
I feel like they could've fixed almost all the issues of the movie if they just made the step brothers go back in time, or have their ancestors kill holmes and Watson and take over their rolls. That would make all the absurd comedy make sense.
That's actually brilliant
"It's almost like a Mel Brooks comedy"
John... I love ya, you're very funny and seem like a great guy... but don't drag Mel Brooks into this.
Hell, Mel Brooks pulled off a film set in the Victorian era ... producing The Elephant Man.
Mel has left funnier things in a toliet bowel.
The only way this movie gets a laugh from Mel Brooks is if after the viewing party they watch snippets of the actor's press tour. If this movie isn't a meta joke, it's a bad joke.
Yeah that was blasphemy. Dont ever say this movie and mel brooks in the same sentence or same convo....ever!
no he's right. This is like robin hood men in tights or dracula dead and loving it. One of his later bad movies.
Will Ferrell founded Funny Or Die. Ever since, I think he's been choosing "die"
The selfie joke does not seem anything like something from a 2018 movie.
"We're never going for jokes, in a weird way."
Really? Wouldn't have known.
The sad thing is Rob Brydon is actually one of the funniest, wittiest people alive. And he was misused on this movie.
He used to be one of the most consistently funny comedians whenever he appeared on QI back when Stephen Fry was still the host. The wit on that man is fantastic.
NGL that first pitch where Sacha Baron Cohen was supposed to be Sherlock and Will was just supposed to be comic relief Watson might have been legitimately good, or at least definitely better than what we got.
I'd prefer SBC as Sherlock and John C. Reilly staying as Watson.
No neither of them has ever been funny or have they ever produced a good film in their lives

It’s the truth borat, Bruno, the Ali g show, talhadega nights, and step brothers where all shit.
The more I see of Will Ferrell, the more I hate him.
I wouldn't expect Will to make anything good since his visits to epstine Island and his spirit cooking adventures.
Real funny guy...
Me after seeing this movie: “I could sure use a bit of cocaine!”
@Peighnis Honourchign so he could have the fun he wanted but the movie didn't give him I'd guess
If the writers had done some, maybe the movie would have been less dull.
That's what the producers thought before making the movie
"We kept it English" he says, after portraying about the kind of unsubtle beat you over the head comedy that can only come from an American imitation.
Didnt Britain make that Nazi concentration camp sitcom thay was god awful and immediatly brought down? It's an american thing yes, but its not just americas thing nor is it exclusively an american issue. Remember, Airplane was also American and the film was beat for beat a great comedy. It just depends on the creative minds in charge, whos style and quality fluxtuates indiscriminately by location.
Americans really hold the high bar for musical story telling, animation (Alongside Japan) and crime drama. I will happily admit that the british thrive with nearly all forms of comedy on the big screen and they are especially good at war films as well.
Its just like music taste, where it really depends on what the region seems to like best. Brits got the best rockstars (Beatles, Queen, bowie) where Americans got the best folkstars. (Bob Dylan, John Denver, Paul Simon)
And there are certain genres both countries thrive in, such as Fantasy Horror and Sci Fi - the big trio. (Music wise being pop of course haha)
When it comes to mystery, i think it depends. I think britain pulls off good whodunnits and murder mysteries best, where Americans pull off crime mysteries and noir great.
Briish people just act polite in polite situations and call it comedy
@@donaldsterling1631 thank you. It's pretty ignorant to say it's "an American thing". The movie just plain sucks.
I find much of British comedy to lack subtlety. Mr Bean being the most obvious one that comes to mind.
@@MaggotDiggo1 I think mr bean is a classoc character for stage performances but didnt translate as well to the screen
As soon as i see Will Ferrel on the cover of a new movie or series i instantly cringe and try to polish away the stain it left on my brain
LMAOOOOO This deserves comment of the year award
Them talking about how they were ad libbing gives me flashback to when the director of the female ghostbusters said the same thing. And we all know how that movie turned out...
I'll admit, "Balloons are happy but they're not alive" got a small chuckle out of me. As far as "lulrandom" humour goes, at least the delivery is half-decent and it's a legitimately odd and confusing statement that makes me want to gain some insight into the character's reasoning. Instead of just shouting words that someone thought sounds funny. In fact, from this video alone I'm more invested in sack-on-head guy than anything else. He should've replaced Ferrell as the lead.
are your balloons NOT alive? i thought they were supposed to be?
@@lgbtqiarights funni funni

You should watch David Lynch's The Elephant Man if you want to see "sack-on-head guy" as a lead.
YOU'RE THE PROBLEM
Still can't believe they casted Hugh Laurie as Mycroft and somehow managed to screw that up
I haven't seen it but it bewilders me how you screw a cast of Laurie, Coogan, Bella Ramsay, Kelly Mcdonald, Pam Ferris and Ralph Feinnes ffs. How do you mess that up?
What a waste.
They cast. The "ed" is unnecessary.
its been like a year since ive seen you post. nice thanks man
You know what a Victorian era Weekend at Bernies type situation with those two and a dead Queen could be hilarious actually
“It needed an American revamp”
How did nobody see this quote and think, yeah this will be a great travesty.
Funny enough the ABC series is fantastic, except the difference is that honors the books and isn't a fucking Will Ferrel comedy.
How didnt you see that quote and instantly recognize the sarcasm that was behind it? They knew they were just making a shitty, low brow "comedy" with minimal effort put against the backdrop of old victorian era english novels. They just wanted a quick cash grab.
>American revamp of Sherlock Holmes
>Doesn't star Chuck Norris
Why even bother at that point?
@@dannyboy5008 what?😅 are you aware that it’s not always EASY to recognise sarcasm?!
I’m still waiting for TSFTW Elf bowling the movie
You and me both.

OH GOD YES
We all are.
Oh, it's a movie based off a '99 computer game. Wtf
I was not aware you made a video recently, did not see ANY notification whatsoever.
Yes, you are correct. I've been waiting for years for someone to put the movie Anchorman in it's place by stating that it's "just funny enough to make you forget about the bad." You are clearly a person of great distinction with a flawless sense of humor, and we all need more of you guidance, please.
Perhaps a video of your funniest moments to teach us all a few things.
Specifically with Watson & Holmes you are not entirely wrong. This team lead me to set my expectations sky high for this one.
"Briddish stuff is funny" is the American approach to British 'culture'
