The Biore Aqua Watery Essense is the one for me. The first time I tried it, I was taking my kids to float the river (2 and a half hours on reflective water). My kids applied physical sunscreen 3 times during the trip and all ended up burnt or slightly burnt. I applied Biore Aqua once and didn't even get a tan. The smell dissipates so quickly it hasn't been an issue for me. I'm Caucasian with normal to dry skin and the alcohol hasn't been a problem for me.

I have been using Biore, other Japanese and Korean sunscreens for years especially those milky and runny texture ones. However when compared to European sunscreens, efficacy-wise, I think Asian ones couldn't stand extreme/outdoor direct sunlight for long time. I would recommend European sunscreens instead if you will go spend a long time outdoor exposing to direct and harsh sunlight. It will protect you more than those sunscreens from Asia.
I hated putting on sunscreen my whole life (I am 31 now) because something in the US ones just make me feel like my skin is retaining the heat from the sun. Please do Hada Labo UV white gel SPF 50 next! It’s another famous Japanese brand. I used Biore but it caused pimples but am really happy with Hada Labo
I’d love to see a review on the Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreens 🙏🏻 they have a ‘mild milk’ version of the original that is said to be good for sensitive skin because it has no fragrance or alcohols. Also a brand of Shiseido.
I appreciate Biore and Skin Aqua's micro-encapsulation technology that boosts UV protection without penetrating into the skin. Without the encapsulation, my eyes will not tolerate octinoxate. My favorite is the Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk (blue bottle). Although it has no alcohol or fragrance, it has fewer filters.
That one by Skin Aqua is my fave too because it doesn't sting the eyes. It has fewer filters, but it's dominant filter is zinc oxide which is a very stable UVA/UVB physical filter. It's a hybrid sunscreen but almost pure physical. The chemical filters are lower in the INCI list, that's why it doesn't sting the eyes.

I'm in love with littllextra riceberry sunscreen right now and I'm a big fan. I can apply a generous coat without feeling uncomfortable. It do not sting the eyes or taste awful if sweat drips into my eyes or mouth. The price is also very reasonable compared to most facial sunscreens. For reference, I have mostly normal skin, slightly oily on my nose and chin, and somewhat prone to acne unless I'm rigorous with my skincare. I've been using it for a month and haven't had any breakouts or even an isolated large zit, so it's certainly not clogging my pores.
I'm a die-hard SPF hater but this one converted me. I don't love reapplying it but as a base in the morning + spray SPF throughout the day - it's unbeatable
Absolutely LOVE this sunscreen. Tried it after watching skin care influencer James Welsh rave about it. It's the only sunblock I've tried that leaves no white cast and doesn't have that HORRIBLE sunscreen smell. Speaking of the smell, maybe the company corrected the overwhelmingly strong scent this video mentions, because I find it has a light scent that disappears in a few minutes. The alcohol content doesn't bother me at all, in fact, i think the product feels amazing. Cooling and soothing, leaving soft, dewy and glowy skin. I definitely cannot live without this stuff. I even find my skin looks better after consistent use, healthier, plumper, less noticeable fine lines and more even tone. Not to mention it works so well, my face looks much paler than the rest of my body. Lol

Hi DR Sugai Thanks for reviewing this. I have been using it and love it. Now I am confident using it in sunny days. Actually I really like the scent of this product. It supposed to be “ Lily of the Vally”
I’ve read an independent test, the water resistant ability is quite good, actually one of the top two among all 30 they tested( mostly very widely used ones)
the only sunscreen i use for 4 years++ and this product never make my skin breakout despite my acne-prone skin! the only! actually the alcohol smell didnt that strong when i first use it in 2010s it seems they change the formula through the years.
Late to the party here, but the first time I bought this sunscreen it had a wonderful citrus scent that I really loved. When I restocked a few years later (probably around 2019) the scent was more chemical, as you noted. Wasn't happy about the change, but it worked the same, so it's still my favorite sunscreen.
YES PLEASE, PLEASE SND CHECK TO SEE IF IT STINGS THE EYES 👀!! 🙏 The clear version is all chemical and gotten rave reviews. The other version is chemical and mineral but there are a lot of mixed/negative reviews due to white cast and how it sits on the skin.
@@krisr3612 I use the clear version and have sensitive skin/eyes, and it’s so soothing and not irritating at all. I use CANMAKE on my indoor/minimal exposure days and Biore on my outside/active days. CANMAKE is a cosmetics brand so the sunscreen is very cosmetically elegant, but I’m not sure what their testing has come back like, I’m not sure if it lives up to the SPF 50, but it seems to do well if I am not out in direct sun all day. It was my holy grail until I found the Biore, which truly does give great coverage all day in direct sun. CANMAKE needs to be re-applied a lot more often to get the same coverage as Biore, in my experience.
I love this sunscreen. It does smell strong but the smell quickly fades. If it bugs you, I suggest rubbing it on your hands and fanning it in the air so the smell dwindles.
its 2023 now... got one and is divine...small is not strong at all... very similar to the La Roche Posay .. very nice. Light smell and soooo soft gentle.
I'm currently using this Biore sunscreen and will probably repurchase because my dermatitis doesn't act up. It's nice and light-weight. Unfortunately, it can't withstand my oil rig of a skin.
I love that this is so lightweight and less irritating than other chemical screens. However, It does sting my eyes after wearing it longer so I use mineral around eyes. Also, I still layer another mineral sunscreen 10+% zinc oxide on top of this.
@@LeBeautiful Afaik, chemical screens blocks out UVA better but tends to be less stable. Physical screen is more stable. To me, i feel it offers better protection than to count on only one layer of sunblock. I learned to layer on at least 2 types of sunblock cuz i always miss areas and the sun damages are so irreversible on my hyperpigmentation prone skin. Just need to make sure each layer is absorbed well before the next.
@@LeBeautiful I dab around to make many dots on my face then rub it in. A lady in a beauty in Toronto taught this method to rub in an even layer for bb cream/foundation. I do the same for mineral sunscreen.
Only sunscreen I'm able to wear over my eyes yes it's got scent but it fades after about an hour. Sinks in well. I've got oily skin but my skin is dried as I use retain A put a moisturizer on before the sunscreen no issues at all. I've tried zinc sunscreen and burns my eyes. Sticking with this.
I gave up all kinds of mineral sunscreens for this one. In the past I would always get white cast in physical sunscreens and as an oily person, god, I hated the feeling of icky and yucky feels of physical sunscreens. That all changed with this product. Been loving this for years now!
This sounds like a dream minus the alcohol and scent. I'm always looking for a lightweight sunscreen with a skin-like finish and of course, no cast. Eastern sunscreens sound nice but I hate having to special order them. Have you gotten a hold of the Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Liquid for face (SPF 50)? I'd love to see a review on that one or hear your thoughts on it.
@Umayma Samow I have acne prone, combination skin so it’s really good for that. Because of the alcohol content, it might be too drying. I’d recommend you watch gothamista’s RUclips vids cos she has dry skin and she has recommendations on Asian sunscreens to use :)

I used the original version before and loved it. I don’t know why I stopped but I am definitely going to re-purchase this as it plays well with make up 😊 I’m hoping the smell isn’t too bad as I really don’t mind heavy smells as long as they disappear after it dries down.

I like this sunblock. I use it daily and then apply Australian gold mixed with Frezyderm on top and don’t need any foundation in the spring/summer months. It ends up being matte and stays all day. But if I were to go for a full day at the beach I would load up with a thick one instead. I find it interesting that I have very sensitive skin and even though the alcohol content is high I don’t get irritated. Thanks for your review. Nice and honest. Just subscribed! 😊

Do you see an uptick of melanoma in the Seattle area? I am also from here and find that most people don't wear sunscreen, under the guise that it's "cloudy" here and UV "is low", which we know is false.
OG Japanese sunscreen. Used to buy that when there weren’t as many options. But now, I find there are better alternatives that wont potentially sting and cause irritation.
I noticed that Japanese skin care and makeup seems to be aimed at more oily skin (they're known for powders, blotting papers, alcohol in skin care etc), whereas Korean products are all about hydrating and moisturizing and glowing- so I assumed people in Japan have oily skin and Koreans dry 😅. I quite like this sunscreen but it pills quite badly when I put any liquid/cream cosmetics ovet it (primer, foundation etc). I had the same issue with Korean sunscreens. Idk what the ingredients are that don't want to play together, but I didn't have this with Bioderma, LRP or Eucerin spfs 🤷♀️😕
Great observation- I’ll pay attention to this when looking at Japanese and korean sunscreens or just skincare products in general! Thanks for sharing your thoughts too. 🙏🏼🙏🏼👍👍

“It’s the Frozen sunscreen” How adorable 😂
Lol thank you! 😂🙏🏼
There's one by Sunkiller that has a huge star on the front that is even more Frozen-esque!
I def need to try that Skin Aqua one out now. I see Stylevana has it too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@danielsugaimd Yess you should try it and please review it on your future videos.
I use this sunscreen and work out with it. It doesn't get in my eyes, great as a primer! I also love the Black Girl Sunscreen also.

Mahalo Brendan! Appreciate the support from the beginning. Hope you have a nice weekend 🙏🏼🤙🤙🙏🏼
Plz explain what do u mean by spray spf?
@@ananyabushra9737 SPF in an aerosol can. Looks and feels like dry shampoo but works great
what spray spf do you use?
@@louiseoterco1749 VT Cosmetics Cica Sun Spray SPF 50
Lol
I used this sunscreen it been a years now. Frist sunscreen then my foundation. Yes I have sensitive skin but so far it good.
May i know what foundation do u use after using sunscreen..tq
@@zabidahzaa207sorry for late reply... I used Maybelline fit me matte +powerless then last I used loose powder so it not look so oily
This is my favorite body sunscreen, but I can’t use it on my face... I don’t have sensitive skin but I have VERY sensitive eyes and the alcohol fumes BURNED MY EYES 😳☹️ If you have sensitive eyes and/or wear contacts, use with caution ⚠️
directions does say to avoid eye area
@@BunnyInTheSnow you’re absolutely right! I still caution to use on face if you have sensitive eyes because the fumes were still strong even on my forehead 😫
@@TheChubbyJenny i came onto youtube searching for sunscreen reviews thinking whether to switch what im using or not (which is this..) i guess i wont be switching anytime soon. :) eyelid cancer though as mentioned in his video... worrisome.
@@BunnyInTheSnow I think that this sunscreen is best as a body sunscreen because it’s still moisturizing, despite having alcohol. But I just can’t use it in my face because of my sensitive eyes :( I use Supergoop’s SPF eyeshadow on my eyelids and its been great:)
@@TheChubbyJenny it's the same for me. It burned my eyes. I'm confused whether I'll continue using this because apart from my eyes been irritated, it works pretty well for my skin.
I know t'was a year old video but I'm just so so lucky to find this at the right time. You see Doc, I purchased this very brand of sunscreen and using it for a week now when out of the blue I wanted to check any videos with regards to "ALCOHOL in A Sunscreen " whether it's harmful or good ? Then boommm I've got your vid Doctor 😊 and NOW I'm not scared anymore hence it was really good even in the eye area ! Huge thanks ❤
Hi DR Sugai
Thanks for reviewing this. I have been using it and love it. Now I am confident using it in sunny days. Actually I really like the scent of this product. It supposed to be “ Lily of the Vally”
I just finished one tube of this. Don't care for the alcohol makes my eyes sting. Ended up using on body only. Texture is great though.
Agree with you. Nice idea to bring down to the body if alcohol or scent is too irritating 👍👍
Great review!!! Thank you!!! Just bought the other day, so far so good. Very good formulation especially during summer in the Philippines👍
thanks for this review! I use Biore body serum with spf 50. I love how Biore feels lightweight when applied. Great for hot weather.
I’ve read an independent test, the water resistant ability is quite good, actually one of the top two among all 30 they tested( mostly very widely used ones)
That is awesome to hear! Thanks for sharing. If you come across the link, please share with us!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
the only sunscreen i use for 4 years++ and this product never make my skin breakout despite my acne-prone skin! the only! actually the alcohol smell didnt that strong when i first use it in 2010s it seems they change the formula through the years.
do you know if the gel version of this sunscreen is as good as the essence for acne prone skin?
I love that he is not afraid to test it ❤ new subs here..
Can you review the Canmake Mermaid UV Gel?? It’s another Japanese sunscreen!
Yes please!
In the meantime, Dr Dray and Glow by Ramon have reviewed these in addition to others.
Yes! Would love to see a review on this!
Oh and forgot to say thanks for another awesome video buddy 🙏
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🤙
I'm currently using this Biore sunscreen and will probably repurchase because my dermatitis doesn't act up. It's nice and light-weight. Unfortunately, it can't withstand my oil rig of a skin.
Would love to see nivea water gel sunscreens be reviewed
That one is amazing. I just ordered another bottle yesterday
I love that this is so lightweight and less irritating than other chemical screens. However, It does sting my eyes after wearing it longer so I use mineral around eyes. Also, I still layer another mineral sunscreen 10+% zinc oxide on top of this.
Does that improve effectiveness from harmful Sunrays? No hate, just curious
@@mllyett1901 Ahhh! And one more question, how do you apply your sunscreen, the 2-3 finger method? for two layers?
@@LeBeautiful I dab around to make many dots on my face then rub it in. A lady in a beauty in Toronto taught this method to rub in an even layer for bb cream/foundation. I do the same for mineral sunscreen.
Only sunscreen I'm able to wear over my eyes yes it's got scent but it fades after about an hour. Sinks in well. I've got oily skin but my skin is dried as I use retain A put a moisturizer on before the sunscreen no issues at all. I've tried zinc sunscreen and burns my eyes. Sticking with this.
I’m really sensitive to scents but actually love this sunscreen!
This is my OG sunscreen, holy grail :)
@Umayma Samow I have acne prone, combination skin so it’s really good for that. Because of the alcohol content, it might be too drying. I’d recommend you watch gothamista’s RUclips vids cos she has dry skin and she has recommendations on Asian sunscreens to use :)
That’s not a Biore sunscreen
That’s a “Frozen sunscreen” your daughter’s so cute 😭❤️

I love this sunscreen. Finally found one that is gentle on the skin.
I used the original version before and loved it. I don’t know why I stopped but I am definitely going to re-purchase this as it plays well with make up 😊 I’m hoping the smell isn’t too bad as I really don’t mind heavy smells as long as they disappear after it dries down.
I am sensitive to parfumes but i didnt had an issue with that sunscreen but i like missha more 😅 so since i live in korea i just buy them in 1+1 so very affortable 😇
Thanks for the review, Dr. Dan! :)

@@danielsugaimd yes doc I love it :) hopefully you can review and explain if it’s good inside😉
Hi Doc, how about Hada Labo product skincare. Can you review that product for your next video. Thank you.
And thanks for your sharing. I will try this product soon.

Could you please talk more about about alcohol and fragrance and skin issues?
yup2 the alcohol smell is strong but it goes away, so apply little by little instead of full on 2-3 fingers
This is the only relatively affordable sunscreen I use. I've try new ones all the time.
What are the alternatives? This one's my favorite right now

@@danielsugaimd Thank you! And money is on silicones as the cause, but I don't know enough about chemistry to know why etc.
I use to use this under makeup but my t zone gets oily a little with this, I disagree the scent is negligible ... but I like the hado labo more keeps me oil free
I have using this sunscreen for 4 years till now.. It is because the price is quite affordable for student.. So far I do not have any serious acne prob and perfect for makeup base.. This is my best sunscreen after hada labo, sunplay and loreal sunscreen..
Biore for pigmentation can remove pigmentation so many years.
I have MCS so fragrances can give me a headache. I've been using this Bioré Watery Essence sunscreen for years and prefer the older formulation because the new formula scent was just too much for me so unfortunately I had to switch to a no fragrance sunscreen. I hope you do a review for Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer, SPF 30
Thanks for the review! I just bough 2 bottles of this to use since I've got oily skin and feel better about a dermatologist having a good experience with the product.
Great review! I noticed the alcohol in the ingredients list and the scent, but did not think much into it until your explanation. It may be time to look for a substitute, but the light texture of this product is hard to turn away from!
