Literally hands down the most informative video on sunscreen/ Biore UV Aqua Rich I've seen. Thank you for all the research and demonstration - life saver for a person of color.
I am so glad you were able to confirm what I was thinking, the gel is best for body and the essence continues as an absolutely lovely product for the face. I have not yet tried the new formulation because I have backups to use. Thank you for your unbiased reviews and your expertise as to what ingredient does what.
I got my new watery essence last week. Tbh, i always feel a certain way every time they start reformulating their sunscreen. The formulation is quite identical with the previous ones. The texture is almost similar, and they use the exact same filters, too. But it's even more dewy. I've always loved this sunscreen because it's easy to blend - i can blend it without looking in the mirror. It also feels lightweight on the skin. My only problem is that it gets more dewy. The 2020 formulation was already too dewy for my liking, and this one makes me look even more sweaty. I wish they'd go back with the 2019 formulation. The 2019 formulation was superb. I love the natural, less glowy finish. My favorite is still the UV Athlizm Essence because the finish is more natural, although not as easy to blend.
Ugh! Everyone was saying d new 2023 version is less glowy dan 2019 version and so I ordered it! 2019 version looks lyk grease on me..nd now m scared to try d new one!!
Ive been a Biore watery gel girly for a couple years now and I absolutely love it!! Im so glad to see this video, I'm definitely going to be trying these other ones.
Tone up effect is very common in Asian market, and hence the mineral UV filters (mostly TiTO2) are added to sunscreen. Giving a no make-up brighter skin tone.
Yuup. That's me. Imagine my disappointment when I found the new Biore watery gel no longer dries matte nor leaves a light white cast. I've been using it since 2015, which was when I stopped having to wear makeup all bcs of this. I have nice skin and light skin enough to get away with this. Now I have to look for a new product, or start wearing makeup again *dies a little on the inside*. I love really good skin care man... but makeup is another thing.
Thank you for this review! I love your sunscreen content. I just got the spray and was disappointed in the way it mists (not as fine as I was hoping). I haven’t paid attention to how shiny I was after but I will probably still pick another up when I travel to Japan this summer. I definitely prefer the essence vs. The ‘gel’ I agree that the old version was white casty and it was hard to blend. Agree that the essence is superior (i definitely plan to stock up in Japan).
My oily skin loves the original biore sunscreen so I was super excited to try the mist, but it left my skin with an oily slick. I’ll use it up but won’t repurchase.
Ooooooh I love the Watery Gel and it has been my go-to for the face and body (currently enjoying the 2019 or was it 2020? reformulation which has the twist cap). Much appreciate the review on the 2023 reformulation~ Also, not sure about the 2023 reformulation but the older one (with the bit deeper blue colour) has 2 sizes - watery gel has 70mL and 90mL, while essence has the 50mL and 70mL sizes. I think they might still have the smaller (and larger) sizes for the newer formulation but have to check with friends there.
I have been wearing the Athlizm milk for running but the Essence version and aqua essence pilled horribly on me (as do a bunch of the other Japanese sunscreens with the exception of Canmake and Kiss Me Mommy). I also find titanium dioxide of any significance dries out my u-zone. Kind of want to try the mist as the Coola one I have used is an eye and lung burner.
I literally just got the watery gel yesterday and used it for the first time today… and I hated it It started dry down before it was fully worked in which led to some unnecessary DRAGGING of the skin. It GOUPED up around my jaw area(I shave every night so I tend to have some stubble by morning) and felt thicker than I was expecting. Lastly, I am one pale dude and there was a noticeable white cast. I have a lot of natural red undertones and I looked sickly. I wore a hoodie all day to hide my face a little bit and it rubbed off onto the inside of the hood😂 Anyways. I wish this video had come out prior to my using it. Will use it on the body since I’m moving to Florida next week. Sunscreen is the only part of my routine I don’t have down. Love the content! I bought all of these too when I was in Japan! so far so good. There is another version of the biore aqua rich protect lotion "highlight" that leaves a glowy finish which is also nice
I was also excited about the mist when I saw it on the Kao youtube channel and love the glow! But I do agree that it will be used up quick...my go-to suncreen at the the moment is 'Nivea Super Water Gel Spf 50' it's light-weight, moisturising, no white-cast, no fragrance, not-sticky, sensitive-skin friendly, gives a glow and has a pump👌🏻

Hi, Ramon! How does the LOTION compare to the ESSENCE in terms of being more lightweight, less sticky, less shiny/matte, less greasy, etc.? I have oily skin and have tried the essence and gel versions but not the lotion yet.
You do really helpful sunscreen reviews, so thank you! I loooove the Watery Essence. I waited way too long to try it, and by the time I opened my second tube I already had six back-ups. 😂 I'm tempted to try the Protect Lotion but I don't think I can deal with the cast of the gel or the shininess of the mist.
Hey, correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Japan has a specific measurement for waterproof/resistance like the US does. I remember Labmuffin discussing this
I have been using the old version of Aqua Rich watery gel many years, but since Biore diversify their sunscreen version into various version, I lost the watery gel supply because I couldn’t locate them anymore in the market. So I am left with several old version bottles in my fridge to use. Your RUclips just told me that watery gel is actually available in the market. You info give me hope to look for it again. It’s not available in Malaysia, hope you can let me know where can I buy it.
Bought the Biore Protect in Japan- I love it! It’s hydrating although contains alcohol. I did smell it initially, but don’t smell it anymore. Once I ran out, I turned to Amazon where I bought the Protect formulation. It was harder to apply. Not sure why? Did they reformulate?
I would prefer the Canmakr without alcohol but I also want water resistant! But I have yet to find a chemical SPF that works well on my dry sensitive skin that is water resistant. But I keep looking!
Do any of these sting your eyes? I know Biore makes one of the few full chemical sunscreens that don't burn my eyes (their Aqua Rich Lotion I think), and it would be awesome if these were the same

I have patchy beard and i want to protect my face all. I loved the biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence 2019 btw! Before buying it again i was looking around, but i am so confuse... too many options available.
I sometimes prefer one with titanium dioxide as I feel I get less darkening on my melasma areas so maybe in this one it’s raising the PPD a tiny bit? Not sure why they’d shrink the bottle tho
i want to get the mist its shiny but that convenience tax lol for replaying and only want to use it when hiking or outdoor when i dont care how i look just want the protection
I do enjoy the lotion version for my super oily face. It keeps my oil down for most of the day and it doesn’t sting my eyes. Thanks for this review. I won’t be buying the mist😊
I was so excited for the mist to use for reapplication, but I find it doesn't dry down at all :( it makes my face very wet and greasy. I have found this with every spf mist I have tried.
Super informative brand review! Thanks Ramon 😊👍 I was vaguely tempted by the mist, but even for review purposes, I think I'm going to pass! It looks way too glowy for my taste 😅
for me the mist stings like crazy when i apply it to my face. the lotion is great but it does not apply well at all after i use my azelaic acid cream (skinoren).
I know right? They're all so shiny! The least shiny one I've tried is one from Neutrogena. I cant find it right now, but I THINK it's the Ultra-Sheer dry touch one in the white and blue packaging. I have another Neutrogena one in pink packaging, which I believe is more shiny. I have to put tanning goggles on if I spray them directly onto my face though, cuz they both burn the bajeezus out of my eyes 😂 I have one from Sun Bum that doesn't burn, but it's greasy as hell 🤷
literally wearing watery sun gel on my face right now as i watched this vid. i stopped wearing this since the major change to the formulation and had been wearing korean sunscreens... just bought the watery sun gel last week as an impetus buy after a few reviews saying they are good again. tbf, when i applied it just now, i was like ugh, white cast (thats why i'm surprised you said it has no whitecast) for reference, i think I'm a shade or two fairer than you and the cast was obvious on my face during the first 20 mins or so of application. HOWEVER, the whitecast and fragrance doesn't last (THANK GOD) and it faded off pretty fast until i forgot i even had sunscreen on. (you guys get what i'm saying? because there'll be some sunscreens which constantly reminds you they are on your face, and this doesnt, which is good)
My guess the water gel formula with titanium oxide is for added 'toneup'. Asian like to add tone up effect so their skin looks 'whiter'. May not be part of the western culture but desirable in Asian culture.
Why I prefer Japanese to any other sunscreens because they don’t stuff them full with plant extracts, plant oils, actives etc. as they do in especially Korea. I can hardly use K-beaty products due to this fact. Tho Japanese tends to contain vitamin C, which I also can’t use: Sensitive Rosacea fungal acne skin. Most sunscreens regardless of origin are not fungal acne safe. Tho the Japanese ones tends to irritate my skin due to the high alcohol content, the smell doesn’t bother me, I still prefer it as many comes in a pump as well as refill.
Lemme see this sshhh… 😂 I bought two of these Biore’s in the funny bottle and started to use it and it seems like it ain’t working for me: may be using for body. Lemme see what you have to say….ooops! You didn’t talk about that one- (aqua rich lotion) I’m not convinced by this Aqua Rich lotion. Let me give it another try.
The watery Essence ALWAYS burned my eyes 😞 I tried and tried but it just didn’t work and I wish it could be one of the millions of peoples HGs for me lol but I just got the lotion version! So high hopes for that. The gel gave me a cast and the mist was sold out. I’ve never been a fan of mists so 🤷♂️
I’ve bought the Biore Aqua Rich classic a few times and am liking it less and less. I own a UV camera now and compare sunscreen applications, and I find this particular sunscreen especially difficult to get an even dark layer with. Like, several applications and more sunscreen than is recommended will still leave streaky lighter gray parts instead of uniformly black coverage like I’m able to get with other sunscreens. Not sure if my vitamin C under layer is to blame, but regardless, I don’t have this problem with other products. I realize UV cameras don’t quantify SPF, but they do tell you when you have lighter or skip areas, and the picture is not great with Biore.
Help! I'm trying to get a sunscreen my boyfriend will use. He likes spray on---cuz it's easy... eye roll. He also has a short beard/ stubble, and is working outside/ sweating often (contractor). American sunscreens are so white-casty and sting eyes...and I love Asian sunscreens like you. Can you suggest any spray on sunscreens for dudes that goes on sheer on a beard, is easy to use, doesn't sting eyes, and is sweat/ water resistant ish? Does the Biore spray sting eyes? I feel like he may use it/ if he can not notice it makes him shiny/ glowy lol. But so hard to find a good spay on sunscreen for dudes.
Looks like the watery essence is still going to be as suffocating as the last formula 🤦🏾♂️ . Congratulations on your nuptials. Wishing you guys a long successful marriage 👏👏🎉🎉❤️
Why the casty one is lil more expensive than the gel one is because of asian beauty standar. Mostly asian like lighter skin and mostly asian face can be darken easly that why they need tone up cream. Opossite with west people, asian tend to dislike tan skin

Lotion in Japan means toner so when they say toner for the sunscreen it translates to sunscreen toner, therefore the sunscreen texture

Let me give it another try.
just love your content ❤
bruh, this sunscreen is my savior, my godsend, my dskalfdsfada... it works with beards toooo, it's just awesome, love it, absolutely
Is the biore rich watery essence chemical or hybrid sunscreen?
Please compare the essence with the brand new American version!!!
The watery Essence ALWAYS burned my eyes 😞 I tried and tried but it just didn’t work and I wish it could be one of the millions of peoples HGs for me lol but I just got the lotion version! So high hopes for that. The gel gave me a cast and the mist was sold out. I’ve never been a fan of mists so 🤷♂️
first application of the essence, i can handle the fragrance, somewhat. second time, yeah, no go. so bad that i have to wash my face.
did any of these burn or sting your eyes at all?
How do you compare this with the new skin aqua super moisture gel?
There’s a new one?!
Why does the original one smell straight up like rubbing alcohol? Does this one smell like alcohol?
If I'm at home do I have to keep reapplying the sunscreen?
No
@ Thank you :)
Thank you.
I feel like japanese sunscreen overall have very similar formula and set of UV filters, Korean sunscreen has more variety
Plz try it out!!!!
@@Lily_-iz4py lol. I got it 3 days ago. Hopefully I'm wrong about it 😂
I hope so too 🤲 🤲
Waiting fr ur review!!
I got them all too when I went to Japan 😆
Definitely skipping the mist because of the high amount of alcohol
Why the casty one is lil more expensive than the gel one is because of asian beauty standar. Mostly asian like lighter skin and mostly asian face can be darken easly that why they need tone up cream. Opossite with west people, asian tend to dislike tan skin
thank you for not saying plus plus plus plus.
