This is the in-the-moment take that makes Buck one of the best in the entire world of colour dudes.
Take the play-by-play off his hands, just let him read and react to the action on the diamond, and the viewer at home is gifted with the perspectives and insight of a man that has fully and completely lived the baseball life. When Buck isn't trapped into trying to "sell" the team, when dude doesn't have to keep shillin' that "this team likes to have fun," the info you get out of the former catcher and manager is like a master class in Baseball 101.

So when the struggling Berrios fell back into predictability, by throwing a change after he got a foul off a fastball, that seminar on sequencing was so freakin' real.
David Cone did the same thing when in the YES Network booth a couple of years ago, Re: borderline losing-his-shit about J.A. Happ not paying attention to the swings being taken off his stuff. That's the tradecraft of catchers and hurlers who know. Those greybeards in a pbp booth have an understanding about setting up the guy in the box. And when they can let fly with the honesty about a current era pitcher just not gettin' it, or a young catcher not being stern enough because of a lack of big-league time and reputation on the odometer, we at home are getting the straight goods about smarter baseball planned and executed.
Those guys, like Buck and Coney, have had their baseball thinkin' minds honed by hundreds upon hundreds innings. In addition to the games within games they directly played with batters, peeps like Buck and Coney have sat on many a bench, in many a booth, talking the game over with their peers, considering the best way to attack an at-bat and grouped envelope of hitters. So when Buck lets loose with a tart tongue about the hometeam ballplayer, when he gives the kid gloves treatment a rest, we are benefitting from a resource that has been curated by a whole lifetime in the game.
