I’ve just found your channel and binge watched your videos. Firstly i think you’re very brave buying unseen and riding her for the first time on your own. Very excited to follow your journey as i also have an ex national hunt horse who is a 9yr old. Her head carriage already looks better in walk with your changed nose band and bit! You’re a lovely rider and just what she needs. Cant wait too see more of you both 🥰

Haha thank you. I have already been watching yours! Her bit hadn't actually been changed yet in this video. She's so much happier since I changed her to a loose ring though!

She is so pretty! I used to work around racehorses back in the day, Lester Piggett rode my steel grey mare Meg in S.Wales and said she had a lot of potential. He was really partial to her but I never raced her because even though I grew up around that industry it never sat well with me. I ended up rescuing racehorses and even greyhounds. Ended up owning several poor dogs discarded by Vinnie Jones in 2006 and they had similar things going on. Training and helping these lovely animals are some of my favourite journeys, they give the love, time, healing and kindness back a million times over ♥ Your sweet girl and you are in for the best bond possible. Animals know when they're in safe hands, it's a joy to see their relief and personalities peep out, the best feeling in the World! I used to ask nothing but respect and politeness from my animals, just basic good manners, but they gave so much more I didn't ask for. Animals are wonderful when allowed to be who they are ♥

She was a hurdler, so it's all just a case of her learning she's not jumping from a gallop for the show jumps and I being very out of practice need to get a little more confidence in allowing her to go forward. I had another pop on her the other day and it felt so much better :)

She was given time between but yes she may have still been healing a little but from all the photos I've seen of her in training and on the track she's always got her mouth open so I did also expect it haha. :)

First time watching your channel - brings back memories!
When i used to ride decades ago, i had a green off the track TB who had raced (flat) for 3 yrs.
She had the same type of behaviour - very sensitive in the mouth but also capable of just grabbing the bit and taking off when she wanted to.
It's a bit like they aren"t really paying attention to the training going on in the ring because their brain is thinking "Do we go now? Just tell me when to go! Can i gallop now? That little pole is in the way! Gallop now?"

Try and ride with your elbows bent so your forearm is in line with her mouth which will prevent the bit hitting the bars of her mouth and help with her head carriage.

@@equestrianmelissaeventing not easy when you are riding a horse that is basically backed just to race and not schooled to go correctly into the bit. Get a good instructor to teach you both and give you things to work on between lessons.

Attention aux bras raides qui font bouger les mains et tirer vers le bas d'où les petites defenses par inconfort vers le haut... essayez de travailler à la voix qui précède les action de la main, sans oublier l'assiette que les chevaux comprennent assez vite...bonne chance!

It's been many years since I've schooled my Anglo Arab and ridden him in local hunter classes, but I'm wondering if you're pushing her to jump before you have some fundamentals in hand.
You're a confident rider with a good seat, but I'm concerned about her high head carriage. Maybe a change in the bit and work on a lunge line.
You have a beautiful horse with a good disposition, but working with a horse off the track and re-schooling her after years of concentrated work on the track takes some doing.
    Just my very humble opinion.
    Best of luck!

She's an ex-national hunt horse, and she's been an experienced jumper for over 5 years now. I have re-schooled many ex-racers and I have found jumping to actually help with their retraining, she is doing absolutely fine. Thanks.

Yes, she doesn't want to pull up. The transitions up and down are when she is most reactive with her mouth, she's getting there though :)
