  • What a legend you are, Winnie! 🌟 I impulsively booked a jumping clinic for her after her winter break, knowing she hadn't been in work for that long. I was worried I might get an extreme, wild Winnie or a 'I don't want to do this' Winnie. Thankfully, I got 'I'm so excited to be back jumping' Winnie!
    She really hinted at an exciting future ahead, and I can't wait to see where this journey takes us. Don't forget to subscribe to follow her adventures!

    It appears to me that Winny may be a bay roan, with emphasis on the bay. The first time I saw her I knew she had some white in her. The core of her tail is light. Years ago my own horse was a dark red or strawberry roan. In the summer with high grooming for shows, his body coat looked pink, with dark red face, mane, tail, and legs! Later I rode a Morgan - quarter horse cross that was a bay roan, similar in coloring to the horse Heath Ledger rode in "A Knight's Tale". Black mane, tail, and points, red body but looked like he had been rolled in sugar. His conformation was coarse and unrefined, but he could go all day and certainly had a gusto for fences. Most people at the establishment thought he was ugly and plain, hated him, and didn't have many kind words for him. I had a special sympatico relationship with him and we could do anything. That was 50 years ago.Oh, my aching heart. I still sorely miss them. And to this day, I am still partial to "horses of a different color".😊

    People don't or won't give their young horses the time they need. Too much money involved or the desire to get competing as soon as possible. Somehow the "old fashioned " approach to breaking in then turning away has been lost. Not all people of course. Winnie is doing so well and is really enjoying herself. Brava for your methods.

    It's such a pleasure to see Winnie getting out and having such fun! 🥰
    Horse colour genetics nerd reporting in to say that still absolutely no one has any f*kn idea what affects greying- aside from a couple of strong hints on foals that they will grey out, like light hair "goggles" around their eyes, the greying process is very unpredictable and even in related horses there don't seem to be any strong trends in greying rate. (Except for one line of Arabians, because Of Course there's an exception).
    Having said that, Winnie-woo is definitely unusual! You'd expect A LOT more greying by 5... she's leaving it very late! 😂
    Also normally (speaking very generally) a greying horse starts to get more grey hairs on their head and throat first, then maybe in their tail, mane and then the greying progresses around the body starting from the flank and elbow area. From what I can see via the video though Winnie's grey is remarkably even and isn't "originating" anywhere, not even on her head. Very interesting! I know of only one other horse greying so uniformly, and she was still WAY lighter at 3 than Winnie is now.
    My guess is you won't be getting any dramatic dappling from her (sorry!) but she is probably (eventually) going to turn a nice "rose grey"! (Good luck matching tack to a pink horse though hahaha)

    • @jelphick4686
      @jelphick4686 5 месяцев назад +4

      Thank you, very interesting. I hope that she stays this nice bay/roan/grey colour for a long time as I really like it 🙂 She'll be 6 in July, will just have to wait to see if her summer coat comes through with more grey. I can definitely live with 'rose grey', anything is better than white!! 🤣🤣

    • @kiaradoesart9682
      @kiaradoesart9682 5 месяцев назад

      @@jelphick4686 I went digging because I was curious, and apparently a particularly slow grey has been casually observed in Connemaras specifically. No actual scientific breakthroughs though, just anecdotal evidence.
      Quoting here, from a paper titled "Copy number expansion of the STX17 duplication in melanoma tissue from Grey horses":
      "some individuals in the Connemara breed carrying the Grey mutation show an extraordinarily slow rate of greying [...] These horses show relatively few signs of greying as late as by 15 years of age, and many of them never turn completely grey [...] Possible causes could be an alternative allele of Grey in these horses, or genetic variation elsewhere in the genome affecting the penetrance of Grey."
      Again, from what I can find, there's no actual science backing this yet. But I'd love to know if Winnie has the stallion *Canal Laurinston in her pedigree! 👀 It would be very exciting for The Nerds if so haha

    Love the organised chaos at the start, it's not as fun if you're on time is it??😂
    She's going really well! The hair cut has obviously helped 😂 looks like a good trip out all round! Cotswold cup bound? 🤔🤔
