I just had an AO Smith Heat Pump Water Heater installed yesterday.
I have solar panels, so my electricity is virtually free for me.
My basement isn't heated so taking the warm air around the tank really won't do very much, so I just run the tank on pure electric mode. It doesn't require the fans to be running as well.
In the summer, if the basement gets up to 70 degrees, I may switch it back to hybrid mode.

The AO Smith water heaters are more expensive In my area and I don't understand where you're getting your prices.

2:09 Huh... A $1500 water heater will cost over $5k installed??? Doesn't sound right unless you have major electrical work involved. If I'm just replacing a electric resistance element water heater with a heat pump water heater, the scope of work is identical.

warranty is useless- have you tried getting anyone at rheem on the phone ? rheims extended warranty only applies tot he TABK, not the heat pump !!

I got reamed by ream --- never buy that brand again - tankless hot water heater - required disassembly to " Clean" the burner which requires hours to do -- no visible dirt or flame rod carbonization - clean anyway re assemble - code goes way - rheam technical could not help- re using a 10 year old Japanese design under license - do it all over again every 2 to 3 years. NEVER buy that brand
