Rheem Water Warranty Home Depot (WARNING)

  • Today we’re going to discuss some of the issues with Home Depot’s warranty on your water heater. We recently had a leaky water heater which we tried to apply the warranty on, but encountered some problems.
The standard process is to get a replacement for a contractor grade unit, but it turns out there’s a lot of hoops to jump through before that can happen. Despite the small discount on these water heaters through Home Depot, it’s often not worth the extra hassle.
Buying the professional series that’s handled directly by a contractor can save you lots of headaches down the road!

Hi. Had an incredible experience last week. Our Rheem tankless water heater of 11 years & 10 months started leaking water from the heat exchanger. Called Rheem. Had I not had a receipt, would have be SOL. Had the receipt. Rheem had me take pics of the water heater & the receipt. Received an email authorizing a replacement where I pay the difference between what I paid & a new water heater. Went to Home Depot. Showed them the email. Took maybe 15 minutes. When it came to paying the difference, was told that wasn't necessary & to have a good day. There was no pro-rated discussion. The tankless water heater has a 12-year warranty & the heat exchanger is not reparable, so they authorized the replacement. Maybe I just got lucky.

Went to Home Depot yesterday with the leaking water heater and was able to replace the water heater for free. I didn't even have to contact Rheem like the sticker on the water heater says to do. Home Depot took care of everything for me.

My Rheem water heater just got a leak in its final year of our 12 year warranty. I called Rheem and they had me do a couple of tests to determine if it was a replaceable part or if it was the tank. They determined it was the tank and sent me a letter saying it was recommended for replacement. I would be responsible for any difference between what I paid 12 years ago and the price of the replacement. I took my letter to Home Depot and they said that the warranty is pro-rated. I argued with them that Rheem had said NOTHING about pro-rating. In fact, their certificate of warranty specifically says, "A replacement water heat will be provided should the tank leak after the original installation" while in the warranty period. Well, Home Depot says that's not how they do it. I have to bring the leaky one back, drained and intact, and they will issue me a credit for the amount of the pro-rated warranty, toward a new water heater. I'd be better off junking it for scrap value if that is true. What is your experience about Rheem warranties being pro-rated, and wouldn't the warranty papers say that?

I've owned five, and all lasted a minimum of five years. The Rheem I purchased from Home Depot failed at 18 months. I had it professionally installed, used the recommended cleaner whenever the softener demanded it with a code, and it still failed. Switched it to bypass mode, and it failed even trying to turn it off after the unit spilled several hundred gallons onto the floor when valve head failed.

Items like this, from a "big box" store, seem to have a 10% fail rate, roughly, and that is discouraging, however, my local contractor quoted me $1200 for a purchase/install, for a water heater I can install myself in about 2 hours, and at my ripe age of 60+, that's milking the job. I bought my GE water heater from HD, and installed it myself 20 yrs ago. Yes...20 years. The bottom element is fried, and the tank is showing her years so, feeling it was time, I was considering this very unit, by Rheem, from HD. $1200 from the "contractor" installed, vs, $475 and 2 hours work for me. Even when considering that 10% fail rate the choice is simple. I understand that everybody has to eat, but someone's scarfing prime rib, while I get a ham sandwich. It's really just a roll of the dice, as it was 20 years ago. Also, and not to be rude, but one must consider the source of negative reviews. You own a "Water Heater and Filtration COMPANY", which would make this review somewhat biased no ?

You doing one install every decade will put you at a ridiculous disadvantage. We see thousands of water heaters per year and know the long term problems that occur down the road.

Don’t even listen to these morons. You know the price of a contractor putting in a water heater? It’s between 2-3000$ now. I just got a 40 gallon performance from Home Depot for 559$ and installed it in a matter of an hour. It’s running awesome and is most definitely covered. I put the receipt right in with the warranty. This information is wacky that they are saying.

Amen, brother. I'm going on Sundays without hot water because a Rheem water heater I bought from Home Depot, which was an exchange for one that went south after 5 years that Rheem gave up on fixing, turns out to have some problem that no one can figure out. So tomorrow I'll go back to Home Depot to return this brand new Rheem and think that the next one I get is going to work, which is a fantasy at this point.

Dealing with this right now. Plumber told me to call Rheem first, after 20 minutes and not understanding the person, they hung up on me. Called the next day and the woman was great but I had to be home in front of the water heater... Called the next day from home and she said it was unrepairable and to now call HD to start the return/swap process... Hectic for sure. HWH is only 4 years old and sprung a leak.. Not looking forward to replacing with another Rheem...

My ongoing story: I purchased a Rheem water heater from Home Depot, it leak within warranty period. I called Rheem and got a case# and replacement confirmation email from Rheem.. , I then took all of these info and even the original Home Depot receipt to Home Depot. Guess what? Home Depot can’t give me a replacement, insisting they can’t find warranty record at their computer.
It’s been 3+ days since leaking, and so many phone calls/ wait time to Rheem and HD, still no water heater. I don’t know who to blame and what to do any more. Extremely frustrated!!!

I just watched your video and I purchased the Rheem gas hot water heater at Home Depot last week. The installer pointed out the big STOP sign on the water as I see on your video and the installer told me to call the number below STOP sign. Do you agree with this? I have the 6 year warranty with Rheem, but I also purchased a 5 year extended warranty with Home Depot, that I guess Allstate Insurance company covers. Any advice or comments are appreciated.

I purchased the warranty and when I called to use it they told me the warranty starts the day you buy it. I asked why would I buy an extended warranty of 5 years when my water heater is covered for six? They said sorry can't help you. Ten calls and same result.

I installed a Performance Plus series in my home in November of 2018, and it has started leaking already shy of 5 years in service. The Performance Plus has a 9 year warranty, so I am hoping for the best. After reading these comments it seems to be a crap shoot on whether or not your warranty will be honored or not. It also seems to be very common for these water heaters to fail after reading all of this. I can't say I am too excited about replacing it with the same thing as I will be back in this boat in another 5 years, but at that point I at least got 10 years out of the tank and can invest in something more reliable.

Hi Brandon. We got a replacement rheem water heater, our first one started leaking before warranty expired. Plumber technician was able to put in replacement water heater. Both were purchased from Home Depot.
Question is, do we get another 6 year manufacturer warranty from rheem, on this new replacement? First one that leaked was expiring September of this year? Home Depot was of no help in answering the question😔. They said even though we purchased new replacement, water heater though them, we have to call rheem to register water heater, for warranty to go into effect 🌈

    • @quickwaterheaterfiltration5292
      @quickwaterheaterfiltration5292  Год назад

You won’t get a new warranty. But. That could make a mistake and not record old warranty. On which case you will get a new warranty. Otherwise your old warranty continues. You don’t need to register anything. I would recommend not registering.

I was told by Rheem that I would receive a new warranty on the replacement. But you should probably hang on to your receipt. I hadn't registered my old one originally, but it was under warranty (barely!) and Rheem honored it when I called them.

Hi, can I ask if you have to pay for the re- installation fee? Or this is covered by Rheem or HD? Our Rheem water heater just stopped working last night, 10 years after, which no complaint from me, but now, with the warranty, I am debating if I would look into purchase from Lowe’s. Thank you in advance

I just called Rheem to claim warranty and was done in 15 minutes. I went to Home Depot with case number and they refunded me purchase price from 8 years ago and I bought a new one paying only the price difference from then to now which I am told if I have to pay more they restart the 9 year warranty. Perhaps you should have contacted Rheem first as their website says and you can avoid wasting 5 hours???

After having the little gray plastic drain valve fail flooding my customers rental home, I will never purchase another water heater from HD or Rheem as neither company cooperated in any form or fashion. This unit was only 3 months old, after going to HD for a resolution they had me call Rheem from their phone. After being on hold for over 30 minutes I was hung up on. I ended up making and paying for the repair myself. Luckily, I was not sued for damages - lesson learned and buyer beware! It will not happen again, I promise.

Because I expect water heaters to leak, I replaced that 10 cent plastic valve with a good brass full cock ball valve with a garden hose male fitting before I installed the water heater. Then I set the heater in a drain pan with a drain outlet and plumbed the pan with a pvc drain pipe that will allow any water that goes into the pan to drain through a hole in the floor and into the crawl space below

Rheem Management completely useless... Had two A/C units installed three months apart. Had issue "Registering" to first to get the 5YR Warranty extended to 10YR but "register" the second unit. Rheem Management is completely void of any discretion to make an exception. It's unconscionable and will never but Rheem again and warn others... of course now the unit broke in year 6.5 which is a comedy.... Will encourage others to never buy Rheem!
