    I know the real-time portion of the boardgame can turn some off, but I have to be honest, it increases the frantic nature of it and greatly decreases crowd-playing. When you play games like Pandemic you'll have basically everyone else bullying one player and deciding what they're going to have them doing. But with each player managing a distinct section of the game, and with a time limit in which to do it, players are going to pay attention much more strongly to their own roles than bug others about theirs. It also requires player interaction, since storing all the information in your head at that speed is impossible.

    Great editing, Joel! Love how you interweaved the actual app throughout... looking forward to my preorder of this one showing up.

    I played this last evening for my first time in a group of three and we won. I played the squad leader and I think we had a lot of luck with the dice.

    Hmm I wonder if they could add EXALT with an expansion ( 1 vs all) or add traitor mechanic to it.

    It is much more informative then official reviews.

    Thanks for the review. I love the PC game mainly for the combat so I've been on the fence with this game, albeit interested because of the name. This doesn't seem like a good fit for my group, but I am glad they didn't take the easy route and make just another co-op dungeon crawl but instead found a way to carry over the tension, quick thinking and specific player roles.

      Yeah, lack of tactical combat kills this game for me. What a shame. :(

      Yeah, the combat in this game is very weak. There is no strategy in the combat whatsoever, take the troop that works for that alien, that's it, roll some dice, done. It misses out on the real heart of xcom and that is the combat system. All the other bits, researching tech as so forth were just a backseat measure in the pc game. In this re-imagining of that idea, the entire game is the other stuff, which isn't enough to make it a fun engaging game that has you the player making actual decisions.

    Thanks for the review! I was on the fence about it ever since I saw it at Essen. But since they only had one demo copy there (which is fine, I mean, Essen is a small con after all... :-/), I didn't get to play it. Now I have a clearer understanding of the game and I think it will be fun. So a purchase for me. :-)

    Hi. Great review. I've Heard that the game is similar to Pandemic. Would you say this is true?

      Sort of? It is in some ways, but completely different in others.

      Drive Thru Review What would you consider being the bigest differences. Is one better than the other, and does in make sence to have both.

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  9 лет назад +1

      Dusty20042008 You could definitely have both. Well one is real time and one is not, which is HUGE :) But, Pandemic is really all spatial logistics. XCOM is more push your luck, resource management, and mitigate the evil dice. The similarity is they both have you putting out multiple fires on the board, and it's difficult to figure out which one is the best to address.

    Joel, what is the play time?

      It's about an hour. Maybe a little more with learning.

    This really looks very cool. Too bad I would have a hard time finding people to play it with. If only my son was 10 years older... ;)

    Thanks for the video. As much as I love xcom though this one does not appeal to me.
