    omg, what made this playthough so great is that Rahdo reminds me of a player in my group that takes so long to take a turn and when there's a timer... part of the fun is that the time makes him so hyper!

    "I'm gonna have done this!" ;)
    Thanks for another great runthrough. If you ever stop making these videos, many of us will be very sad. I don't know how many games I've bought after watching these. Luckily for me, my friend bought this one so I can try it without having to spend a bunch of money :)

    Rahdo, nice video (as usual) - but I think you may need a geography refresher course - the 6 "countries" are the continents - which would explain why Russia isn't included, and you refer to South America as "South Africa" a few times...

      But seriously, thanks for your work here (though my wallet hates you).

    "We have ways" is referring to them being better at brutally interrogating aliens for their knowledge. Great review!

    Around 16:20 you say you will not be able to pick up any salvage. The card says you must discard salvage, that means any salvage you currently hold. Since the crises are resolved at the start of the resolution phase it is still possible to pick up salvage by killing aliens later in the resolution phase.

    Great run through Richard. I have always been really curious about this game and how the real time aspect would play out. You really did a great job on showing how the limited time can really effect some of the decisions that you can make but just having to pick one because you are out of time.
    The one thing that I can think of with this game is that I think that the better that you know it the easier it will be. By not having to read and figure out every card that you have and how they will play out could be huge. For a new person to this game and not really knowing what to play I can see them really getting turned off on this game. I know that with the quick decision making of this game my wife would hate it.
    With my game group I could see this as a big hit but only after we have played it a few times and everyone has a better idea of the different types of actions that they could take and why they would want to take that action.
    I can also see where this one would be much easier for you to film having both hands free at all times. So your use of the global pause was a much needed feature. With my wife it would be a much over used feature. :)

    Nice that you made a playthrough so shortly aftet the game's release. Being a long time fan of the video game, I am really interested in this one.
    However it seems to me that the solo play is broken. Even though you said that the time you get to make your decisions get longer, I kind of doubt that it is enough time. Even if you take away the fact that you were doing some explaining and had only one hand, there is no way there was enough time to look through the six research cards, place some ufos, draw crisis cards and think about the deployment of your troops in advance. Not unless you play this game exhaustively to the point that you can play it in your sleep while blindfolded and with dubsteb music at full volume in the background.
    Seems like a shame since I hoped to add this game to the other solo playable games I own for rainy sunday afternoons. Guess I'll stick to the videogame for that. For a two or more players game, I am sold however.

      ***** i haven't had a problem with the solo timer at all, so far (unless i happen to be filming myself and trying to explain strategy at the same time). the reality is, when your'e solo, all the time that would have to be spent with players talking to each other, trying to figure things out, is all practically instant because you have it all in your head. so that's more time you have to actually read. i have found it possible to read all six science cards and make a decision before time runs out, definitely. i was also slower in this vid because i had only one hand to draw cards and money chits. i lost 2 card reading time right there alone...

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 лет назад

      ***** also, the with repeated plays, I'll quickly get to the point where i instantly recognize most tech cards anyway. i'll certainly know what SHIV is from now on, and I filmed this 2 days ago but still remember it... :)

      I'll take your word for it. As I said I am already sold and I guess I'll find out when I try it.

    sure wished they would have made this a more tactical movement and combat game. The early versions of the video game were basically a board game. Not sure how that got left out.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  8 лет назад

      there's already a bunch of boardgames that offer exactly that: galaxy defenders, space hulk, gears of war, earth reborn, level 7 omega protocol.
      they were trying to do something different here :)

    • @PaintMiniSchool
      @PaintMiniSchool 8 лет назад

      Yeah, that's true. It's just that when you first see an Xcom title as a boardgame you have an expectation. I can appreciate the different approach, it just misses the mark for me. It's a strong IP, maybe they will do this in the future. Or even have a game within a game, so when you select your tactical team it opens a mini map and you can play it out. Wouldn't that be cool.

    Richard, been a while I wanted to ask you, why don't you get a Go pro, put it on a helmet and use both hands?
    I mean, you realize the insanity of doing this with one hand? If the answer is "Yeah and you'll pay for it?" The answer is yes, run a kickstarter and you'll get it in zero time.
    But maybe your answer is different, so I'm curios, what's it?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 лет назад +1

      i have tried with something similar (pivothead glasses), and wasn't happy with the results because my head moves ALOT while i'm talking, and even though I tried to keep it still, the motion was just crazy. Plus, it was a real problem to not be able to see what exactly was on screen. so it just didn't pan out unfortunately...

    I was curious about this game but I dropped out when you said that the rulebook was in the app. I buy games for life -- is this app going to be around in 10 years? I just can't support this model; to me it's like having a VHS game, which I can no longer play because I don't have a VCR. Cheesy gimmick and impractical in the long run.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 лет назад +1

      i actually talked about this at great length in the final thoughts video, but to this point, yes, the app will be easily available for the next 10 years, the next 50 years, the next 150 years. while the game itself will likely be very difficulty to get several decades from now, the app will always be within easy reach for as long as people are online talking to each other about boardgames.
      so your concern you express here really isn't something you need to be worried about, IMO. you can watch the final thoughts for more details on this though :)

    • @Misfiring89
      @Misfiring89 9 лет назад +2

      You're going to miss out a great game just because of the possibility that it can't run after 10 years? I don't think it costs that much to require such mindset, you're not buying a house. It's like saying you're not going to buy a magazine because they'll become obsolete after a month, or not buying a DVD because Blue Ray might take over after 5 years and renders DVD obsolete, or not buying a car because it will break down after 15 years. Human life is short, don't waste energy worrying about something that might happen after 10 years. Buy the game, enjoy it for 10 years, and move on. Why limit yourself to such extend?

    • @bbblackwell
      @bbblackwell 9 лет назад

      Misfiring Chong People buy things for different reasons. Longevity is one quality that I think about when I make a purchase. I often play games from 30 years ago, and I expect that I may want to play my games 30 years from now. It's more than just the time factor, though; there's a quality of self-reliance that really appeals to me. I like when everything needed to play is in the box. I also can't stand having electronic devices at the gaming table for any reason, so there's a lot leading me away from this game.

      Torsten Stelling may do. i haven't played it yet, and i'm not sure how well i could demo it without giving up big spoilers for the story (since the game is all about the story), but still i expect i might be doing a video for it eventually. i really like the idea of it :)

    You understand Russia is part of Europe and not it's own continent, yeah?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 лет назад

      i had NO idea that europe is considered a continent, because... well... it's not. but apparently everyone has decided that it is back in ancient times, and it stuck? Anyway, I assumed the game was set in some far flung future where the world had solidified into six major "superpowers", because i wasn't aware of the "europe is its own continent" thing :)

    • @Klerik131
      @Klerik131 9 лет назад

      ***** Not sure if serious or... The world has 7 continents, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Antarctica. Most of these comprise of different countries. In the video game, this is brought down to governments that participate in the XCOM project. In the board game, it's just generalizes the governments into continental governments, as in the EU in Europe, which is a combined governmental system comprised of many European countries. Although the main mass of Russia is in Asia, the capital and the majority of the population are in Europe and it is considered a European country.

    • @joshuachen5476
      @joshuachen5476 9 лет назад

      Klerik AU Europe is commonly considered to be a continent for silly Eurocentric reasons. Apparently, Rahdo has learned a purely geologic (i.e. relating to tectonic plates) and geographic -- and much fairer -- conception of the continents, according to which Europe is definitely uncontinental.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 лет назад +1

      inhumanbookworm in different regions of the world, there are different numbers of continents officially recognized: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent#Number_of_continents
      also, europe is actually part of the continent Eurasia geologically speaking. www.nationalgeographic.com/faq/geography.html#continents
