I really liked the different types of buyer recommendation commentary in the video. It was very helpful. I love Star Wars and have never tried an "rpg-in-a-box" type game before. What the hell, it's Boxing Day, and I owe myself a present! lol
I had the odd luck of going backwards through your reviews, and I will say that I think you're wrong to under emphasize the skirmish mode. A lot of folks at my FLGS play the skirmish mode regularly, and find it pretty fun and balanced. Just because it's not your thing doesn't mean that we don't want you to skimp on reviewing that half of the game. :)
i love the way Descent 2E works, so you slap a Star Wars skin on that and I'm all about that. now thinking about selling my Descent and expansions to get this.
RockCh4lk It wouldn't be fair to do that in some missions, especially those that have a short time limit like Aftermath. In that mission, what would you do if they walk up to the terminal and try to interact with it? At some point they need to know that the terminals can be destroyed as they can't be in later missions. However, I can see a case for not telling the players the exact time limits.
I think it makes it very thematic in the case of Aftermath... The rebels wouldn't know what exactly to do in that situation or how long they have, they would just be invading the complex and trying to figure it out on the fly. The rebels first tried to shoot the terminal from a distance, but I told them "the terminal sparked, but nothing happened as the alarm still sounded." I felt like it simulated the scenario very well, and they succeeded.
I wish he hadn't given this review assuming that everyone's played decent. I never have so I don't know what "it's just like decent" is. It was also pretty off putting when he dismissed the skirmish portion of this game in the way he did.
This was a really good review. I love StarWars but I don't have the time to 'get the full RPG experience.' I wish, but alas, I think I will pass on this...for now.
Love your reviews! I love Star Wars and Descent 2.0, so I justified Imperial Assault as Decent 2.0 Expansion set in the Star Wars Universe. Works for me :-)
Honestly the p vs. p -skirmish mode in this is super fun and addictive, cant recommend it enough. its very open ended and has a ton of variety and re-play value (but not painted models)
Does it seem like there could easily be a pure co op mode? Like my wife and I play Rebels trying to take down the imperials but just playing with the two of us?
I disagree on the comparison to Descent. The things that are different and improved are the things that would make me actually like Descent. I love love this game, but Descent just had a couple of things that I didn't care for. I'd probably like Descent if they upgraded it again to have some things like Imperial Assault.
What do you guys think in the way of balance alone and in comparison to Descent 2nd ed? I think maybe I just might have a crybaby or two in my play group. They won the "Aftermath" mission, stomped them pretty good on the Chewbacca side missions that followed and the second storyline mission. Alot of whining about "impossible odds" when trying to investigate the three terminals in the second storyline mission. They didn't get one terminal investigated. How do you argue the point of difficulty balance when a game goes that lopsided? Opinions? Suggestions?
A lot of groups come into these games with the mindset that they have to defeat all of the miniatures on the map and if you play like that in Imperial Assault, you'll lose. If the Rebels focus on the objectives and make that their first priority rather than combat with the Imperial player's figures, the game is fairly balanced and they'll do well.
See I agree with that assessment. However, this is a problem for me and some of the others in my play group. I think that focusing on combat, if done properly, should be a valid strategy for the game to be considered balanced. Maybe not even in all missions, but I do feel like there should be some. Descent also suffers in this way at times where every mission starts to feel very similar. Just a heavy objective focused race against the clock.
First of all keep up the good work Nick. However I strongly dissagree. All the differences are what make me like Imperial Assault, and initially made me dislike Descent. This is much cleaner and strategic.
I didnt notice that till now because I could only think about how he called it an att att. Thanks for bringing it up, he called a at-st an att att. Come on man
The lack of gender appropriate character selection for all the classes especially the Jedi and Smuggler makes this an automatic no buy. Why would Fantasy Flight not include male character options for the two most popular roles in the movies except to milk the expansions? The character sheets should be double sided if they want to provide female roles for the token female board gamers out there. Board games need to come out of the 1970s and catch up to RPGs on the basics.
Over 11 000 people cried AT ST in annoyance and where suddenly silenced.

Great review and very helpful for somebody who loves Descent and wanted a comparison that was well thought out. Thank you.
Side missions are in Descent, in the expansions.
AT ST
My butt clenches did nothing, I fully shat my pantaloons.

Cool vid. Can you create campaigns like in heroquest?
As a huge Descent 2.0 fan I love Imperial Assault. It's so much fun.

They did the same thing with loopin louie
Beware! Aftermath Scenario Spoiler @ 15:14-15:21
Good review and recap. I knew the objectives for the tutorial mission, but the heroes are not supposed to know the information minor spoiler.
In the Campaign Guide on page two it says that the Empire player must not only tell the players the objective but emphasize them.
Hedgehobbit we have played without telling information and the Rebels have enjoyed the tension of not knowing exactly how to win.

It might not be exactly Descent but it's version 2b. Already have Descent, don't need another.

Descent it is , but I like descent . Great game bought it , if you like Star Wars and Desent your Golden , buy it .
Love your reviews!

Relatively long ago, in a galaxy not too far away...
Are there any really good 2 player miniature combat games that come with pre painted models that you would recommend as a great game?
Honestly the p vs. p -skirmish mode in this is super fun and addictive, cant recommend it enough. its very open ended and has a ton of variety and re-play value (but not painted models)
Star Wars: Descent 3.0. It does not quite have the right ring to it, but it is accurate, I think.
I would play this...but I'm busy with calibrations.
Does it seem like there could easily be a pure co op mode? Like my wife and I play Rebels trying to take down the imperials but just playing with the two of us?
They're doing an app soon so that you can do that

How does this compare to the old miniatures game
Thumbs up for Garrus
Not all Jedi's die, duh! :p
Great review/overview of the game.

Thanks fir the great review.
Yay Infinity! and Warmachine
Come on man you called it an att att its an AT-AT
It was actually an AT-ST
I didnt notice that till now because I could only think about how he called it an att att. Thanks for bringing it up, he called a at-st an att att. Come on man
Josh Beaus Lol I agree

"Token female board gamers". Are your feelings hurt that your gender isn't being represented? That must be very hard for you.
Yeah the made Star Quest again with Star Wars, yeii #overhyped
Hard to see what you're showing due to the bad focus :( Shame.
10:11 welll now they do if they watched this review :P jk
