  • Giles makes up the final piece to the puzzle of Buffy's character representations, that of her mind. More than that he acts as the show's positive male role model. In this video I look at the character of Giles and how he relates to Buffy being the physical embodiment of her mind.

Giles was the one character from that show that I really wanted to see a spin off of. A prequel series that explored his Ripper years would be very entertaining, I think.

The father-daughter relationship between Buffy and Giles is amazing. Giles is Buffy’s real father, not Hank Summers, who didn’t even show up to Joyce’s funeral.

I just wish we got to see more of Giles's past come into play. We got a few peeks into his past impulsiveness and darkness, but I would have liked to see more, maybe a throwback episode purely exploring the night he summoned the demon that killed his friends. And now that I say that I'm going to search youtube to see if anyone made it as a fan film.

tbh Giles realised in the first few episodes that he had no power at all. She barely once did as he asked. 1x03 she still became a cheerleader, 1x05 she still went out with Owen etc etc he was a mentor sure, but VERY early on he had to accept that it was an equal partnership at first and then she took the lead about series 3 IMO when she started coming up with plans for the mayor etc It's what I love about season 1, them working out how to work together. You're right though that he doesn't seem to mind when Buffy, frequently, proves him wrong. Giles has his problems but toxic masculinity is not one of them (he seems to have siphoned that all in to Ripper). And as male role models go he's probably the best on Buffy. (and in case you're wondering, he's my favourite character :) )

Xanders first line to Buffy was "Can I have you" but he meant "can I help you". Giles first line is "Can I help you" but it does kiiinda claim ownership a tad. He proceds to tell her what she wants and what is her destiny.

@@Twisted-View Sure, but many young men who were watching such as myself could really look up to Oz. Xander was fairly decent, but he had flaws and he was often proven wrong by the episode's conclusion. But Oz was confident, self-assured, caring, and as you said, stable. So I don't know how him being a student without a complete perspective on life hinders his image as a role model.

Giles is the only Watcher I like in the entire series (yeah I don't like Wesley that much sorry). Band Candy made me love him even more as a character. I enjoyed seeing both those sides/ages of actually both his and Joyce's character. Their chemistry was spot on for two actors who at that point didn't have many deep scenes with each other. Random, but it would have been interesting to see the Ripper film/series they were cooking up back in the day when they were talking of doing even more spin-offs. Which of all the spin-off options, especially with how long it's been, I would think of all the spin-off ideas they have this would be the easiest to do. They'd have to recast anyway since they'd need someone else to represent his younger self.
