Angels cruelty is what makes him a perfect villain. And I'll never get over the way he stages Jennys body for Giles to find. That was just so cold and brutal.
Glory and The Mayor have always been my faves..... they topped off my two fave seasons but they're just so campy and over the top, it's so entertaining to watch. It terms of malevolence, Angelus definitely gets the award!
Glory was the best, she didn't take her self too seriously which is actually scary, also I hated Adam but I loved that Buffy tapped into the essence of all the previous slayers blew me away
With Angelus there’s an obvious emotional component that the others can’t match. And it helped make season 2 possibly the best season, flaws and all. But I do adore Glory and how the mystery of her and Ben and Dawn slowly unfolded.
7. Adam, 6. Master, 5. First Evil, 4. Glory, 3. Mayor, 2. Angel, 1. Willow. The top 3 all have strong relationships with the existing characters, and that really ups the stakes and the emotional investment.
I had a hard time with Glory as a villain. I felt like she was too much of a child. But I guess that is the point that she had so much power that she never developed the emotional maturity that humans must do to get along with others in the world.
Adam failed partly because it was unclear who the big bad was. Was Adam just another victim for the Initiative and professor Walsh, or was he the monster awakened by their clueless meddling? Was it actually professor Walsh who was the big bad? To a large extent, the central evil in each season had a 1) soft-spoken, decent aspect, 2) a whimsical, unpredictable aspect, 3) a familiar aspect (it comes from among us), and 4) a genuinely evil aspect. In S3, all these were fused in the Mayor; in S6 it was distributed among Tara, Jonathan & Andrew, Willow, and Warren.
Does it make any sense for Warren to be a criminal? He could have become a multi-billionaire overnight by mass producing robot girlfriends. He could have _bought_ Sunnydale, a hundred times over. And the other thing: why didn't he offer to build Willow a Tara robot? Maybe WIllow would have spared him.
Obviously Glory was the most powerful of all Buffy's villains. Maybe Dark Willow at her most powerful could have killed her. The episodes featuring Glory were probably very popular with the guys because Clare Kramer (Glory) was so beautiful and exuded so much sensuality sometimes.
I wish they kept Dark Willow around for an entire season. For example, have her become Dark Willow at the end of season 6. And then to be a 'Glory-like' villain for the duration of season 7 as Dark Willow.
I understand your take, in s04 of Angel it felt a little like we got Angelus light. What made him formidable in Buffy (aside from his awesome dialog) was that he terrorrzed her friends and killed Jenny Calendar proving he was a real threat.
Darla, Drusilla, and the Master were better villians in Angel the Series due to their characters and back stories being fleshed out and being allowed to develop and progress.
He was great until he was let out of his cage. It was pretty clear that the writers weren't gonna have him actually do anything horrifying. Too many convoluted plots were going on that had to keep the season moving, which meant that there wouldn't have been any room to address any consequences to Angelus's actions.
Personally I’d have loved to see an actual season of Xander being the big bad. I mean the potential was there just reactivate the hyena and the soldier (Janus) rituals. Maybe magic items and the lighting gun to further enhance lethality. Cybernetic eye maybe.
Not a bad idea. From what I've seen (hyena, vamp Xander etc), Nicolas Brendon was good at playing evil. But the question is, would Xander be the big bad throughout the entire season, or would he just be the big bad in the final episodes of the season (like Willow)?
@@edwardmartin3549 He would be a good villain for a whole season. But that creates a problem because you're removing him from the scoobies for an entire season. I've heard Xander called the "heart" of the scoobies--- the scoobies might not function as well without his character in terms of dialog and plot. (The same problem would occur if Willow had been removed from the scoobies for an entire season.)
@@edwardmartin3549 Another possiblity: since the actor has a twin brother, has a "good" Xander (who remains part of the scoobies) and an "evil" Xander for the entire season.
I'm assuming you were joking by suggesting that the First, as a shape shifter, would be considered a non-binary character. But Star Trek The Next Generation had an episode where Data created himself a child who was initially non-binary, then chose to be female. So there were trans and non binary character on TV back then. They weren't always referred to by those terms, language has changed a lot over the last 30 years.
Yes it was a poorly tasted joke. I thought as the first as a character was so old and a shape shifter could it be considered so. But yes, just as frivolous thought not an insight :)
Also, I just thought you were missing a video about two characters -- Spike and Buffy. The first deserves it, but the second is simply not properly represented in the series. Despite the fact that Buffy is present on screens for 7 seasons of her series and at least twice in Angel + comics, we really don't know much about her. We are represented through other characters, but almost never as herself. What are her thoughts on certain events? Why should we really guess about this?
@@Twisted-View Well, there was a brief time when Doctor Who was cancelled, so it's technically 2 different shows, but The Doctor first made his appearance in the 1960s.

You had me till Glory. The reason I don't like her is because she's just not likeable. I hate to disparage the actress but I feel like she doesn't pull of quirky, funny, or intimidating at all. She kinda only is bearable because she is honestly a very attractive person. There are other boring big bads but at least they were monsters or creatures, so it felt more unique. Glory just came off as a whiny valley type girl.
I get what your saying, but for me your complaint is kind of why it works. The idea of a literal god acting like a whiny, superficial bray. I dunno I like it.
So... You're saying that Ben and Glory... were working together?....🤔
I mean it's possible...
yes, that much is clear, but in what capacity? 🤔
And do we suspect that there is in fact some sort of connection between them🤔
I heard he sublets from her or something.
I loved Spike’s reaction to that. 😂
The Master was scarier in “The Wish” than in the entirety of season 1.
it was a vampire
agreed!
I am convinced The Mayor really loved Faith and not in a disingenuous way. He would not have gotten the soul Stone, like Thanos did.

You know I count Willow as a big bad.
Yeah, that is so true. I spent the second half of season 2 so pissed at him. Worked very well.
@@jeromelancashire3278 So do I. She was the real big bad of season 6. The trio were just a distraction until Willow arrived.

Yeah, she was essentially a spoiled brat who believed the world revolved around her, because I guess it literally did in her hell dimension.
The Mayor/Faith will always be my number one, though I can accept Angelus above him. You lost me having them in 4th, though…
Fiar enough, if it helps this was my list at the time I go back and fourth on it
