I often find it interesting people hate on ANGEL Season 4 so much when it's one of my favorites in the series. It's one of the only seasons on Angel where there's an overarching story that runs the entire season. Even better yet, it's a story that built off the story of season 3 and added nods to seasons 1 and 2 as well.
I also liked the revelation that Jasmine had planned this all along as it gave continuity reasons for previously unexplained events like who brought Angel back and why was he sparred when the sun should have come up to kill him.
That said, you should probably know the reason the season does feel a bit messy is because Cordelia's pregnancy wasn't known to the show-runners during the initial storyboarding process. They had to write her pregnancy into the show halfway through filming and it caused them to have to make changes to the direction they were going. Cordelia was always going to be the Big Bad, but she wouldn't have given birth to another character. Her and Angel were ultimately going to have to come to blows mirroring Buffy having to kill Angel to save the world. It was also being built from the moment Angel started teaching her how to fight. Doyle was also meant to make a return this season and Glenn Quinn unfortunately died from an overdoes before that could happen. Who knows how this season would have fared had such drastic rewrites not taken place.

    • @JoeJulians
      @JoeJulians  6 лет назад +3

Those changes certainly would have improved it. Yeah I did know about Charisma Carpenter's pregnancy, it's just her whole arc and everything with Connor dragged this one down so much for me. That being said, I have grown to like it a little more over time and Apocalypse Nowish is excellent.

I agree. It's one of my favorite seasons in the entirety of the Buffyverse. That fight with the gang and The Beast was epic! It doesn't deserve the hate it gets except that everyone (including me) was sickened by Cordy sleeping with the aged version of a character she held as a baby the previous season. I mean, ick. I don't care if she wasn't Cordy in that moment. Just, no. Plus, the destruction of Cordy's character overall. Still, I just really love the season overall. I love anytime Angelus comes out to play. Additionally, we got some killer episodes and stunts when Faith rolled back into town. Thrilling season really with some regretably huge mistakes.

BtVS 6 is my personal favourite because it is so dark. It was very ahead of its time in its depiction of ‘incel’ Warren and I thought the Trio were hilarious. Also, it was important that Willow’s reckless flirting with magic would eventually have negative consequences. I do agree that the Spike/Buffy relationship was done quite clumsily and I feel that Xander jilting Anya, even though he did it because he thought she deserved better than him, was jarring.
IMO AtS 5 is overrated, You’re Welcome onwards is class but until that point it takes a while to really get going. And I find Spike pretty irritating in that period tbh.

I don't agree with the ranking but I agree with and respect the reasons for ranking. I honestly think when it comes to ranking seasons like this it comes down to personal preference. Pretty much no season of TV has ever been perfect and while some are better than others obviously I think it ultimately comes down to what and who you love in the show. I agree with your top pick though, Buffy S5 was the best of the best and its a shame that they went and destroyed a lot of what made S5 so great when they got into S6. It really is the characters that drive the programmes more than the plots I think.

Interesting takes. I'm an AtS s4 apologist so it is ranked much higher for me and s2 of AtS because of the deconstrution of Angel's character is always going to outrank s5 for me. But I see where you're coming from and you made good points. Except s7 of BtVS... I'm one of those fans who finds it inexcusible. My rank is: B2>B3>A2>B5>A1>A4>A5>B4>B1>>>>B6>A3>B7. Good video! Interesting to see everybody'd personal preferences! This is my list, it is super controversial and differs from yours quite a lot, though that's because I like dark and grim. Must be the emo melodramatic teen in me. Ranked from favourite to least favourite:
Buffy S5: The perfect package: Heartwrenching family drama, romance, comedy, cohesive and potent themes and character development galore. Classic Buffy at its peak.
Buffy S6: I find it to be daring, thought provoking, carthatic and a necessary followup to S5. The only stuff I find boring (The Trio) I understand why it's there, and the Willow-drugs metaphor never bothered me and was salvaged by Dark Willow at the end anyway.
Angel S3: I find it incredibly well paced. A LOT happens, but its never boring nor does it overwhelm.
Angel S4: A controversial pick, but this season speaks to me thematically. It is very ambitious, and concepts of free will, false gods, biblical apocalypses, sinister utopias, and the dissolution of a team are just made for me. Even the season's biggest failing according to most people - Possessed Cordelia - is thematically rich to me and lends to the despair of the season.
Angel S5: A directionless first half saved only by Spike, followed by a fantastic second half. You're Welcome onwards is one of the consistently strongest runs of the entire Buffyverse for me.
Buffy S2: A mediocre first half, followed by a life changing second half. The strengths of the season hinge on Innocence, Passion and Becoming. Those three eps single handedly elevate the season up a few ranks. However it comes below Angel S5 because it's not as consistent.
Angel S2: The Darla storyline is superb and the high points are some of the series' highest, but I cannot connect with Angel in the middle of the season, when he's on his whole 'Biege Angel' arc, so that whole stretch was very boring to me and only saved by Wesley, Cordy and Gunn. It felt like the Darla arc stopped abruptly after Redefinition, killing the momentum. It got picked up again briefly for Reprise and Epiphany, before giving way to fun but lighter stuff like Pylea.
Buffy S3: A controversial season to be placed so low, but S3 was always just there for me. Faith was never interesting to me and quite predictable until her redemption. There are also no high points here that speak to me emotionally. But it is consistently good, and has one of the tightest season arcs in Buffy.
Buffy S4: Not as bad as people say it is, but you gotta disregard the whole Initiative arc. Character development wise its solid, and its the 'calm before the storm' so to speak before the later seasons.
Angel S1: An ok first entry for Angel that kinda feels like its treading water, saved by the developing dynamics between Angel, Wesley and Cordy.
Buffy S7: The first 7 eps were the strongest opening eps of all of Buffy and had such promise, but got squandered away by an ill defined villain, plot holes galore, cheap deus ex machina, lengthy lethargic scenes of people just standing around talking, unnecessary characters that take time away from the main cast and the claustrophobic but ultimately boring feel of being stuck in the Summers living room.
Buffy S1: Charming in its own right and I like it, but honestly I don't think it deserves to be ranked because it barely feels like a part of what follows after it.

  • @Staineless84
    @Staineless84 Год назад

Late to the party but was rewatching for the 5th or so time and wanted to comment.
I think season 6 of Buffy is criminally underrated. No, hear me out. What compels me about this season is firstly the villains. They're just human. They aren't powerful, they have deep character flaws and simple goals overall, Jonathan and Andrew are clearly just going along with Warren to feel included, they aren't evil and they are flawed and misguided, they are comic relief but obviously dangerous in their own way. Warren is on another level, he represents how beyond all the vampires and demons the show has, you can never rule out the danger that people themselves possess and the human capacity for evil. He's misogynistic, which was evident from his very first appearance before this season, he's manipulative, he's greedy, and as the season continues you get to see how a human could be every bit as bad or worse than a demon or vampire.
Tara's death is also the last really impactful death in the show imo, and the way it's handled is fantastic. They fight monsters and demons regularly, Tara is a powerful character in her own right and yet her death comes down to a man with a gun, and he wasn't even aiming for her. It was a hard hitting reminder that the world Buffy and friends live in might seem dangerous but so is ours, life is fragile, even Buffy was taken down by that single man with a gun and a chip on his shoulder, when all the demons and vampires and even a god had failed.
So that's why I think that season is one of my favourites, might be my overall favourite. Hope my perspective puts a new light on it for you, or at the very least you don't judge me for it too hard.

I used to hate season 7 with a fiery passion! The fact that Giles and Buffy's relationship was at its weakest. Buffy having an episode where she was highly unlikable (get it done) and they introduced so many new characters it was overwhelming... They gossily under used Caleb who was a fantastic big bad. The fact that Andrew became a main chracter when it should of been Johnathan...But the thing I HATED more than anything they freaking kicked Buffy out of her house!!!!. BUT as I have gotten older i have come to enjoy the season and there's alot of great episodes In there. I love Faith coming back and i like some of the potentials, I like Dawn alot in this season. Spike has a great arc and is more involved in the story than ever and his and Buffy's relationship is amazing. I love that Faith comes back into it and I enjoy that we meet a slayers child. The last three episodes are fantastic and they ended the show PERFECTLY. I have realised over the years that the biggest reason season 7 used to do my head in so much is because if only a few things were changed around it would of been a near perfect season.

  • @benjamin6194
    @benjamin6194 2 года назад

I loved your video, but I disagree with some of your choices. I'd say that Buffy season 4 should be much lower on the list, despite having some strong episodes it had the worst arc. Buffy season 6 may have been depressing, but it was supposed to be, it did pretty much exactly what it set out to do, no way it's below season 4. And Angel Season 4 should get more credit for the sense of intensity it maintained from the Beast's rampage on, plus we didn't just get Faith back, we got a 3 episode arc that finally resolved all the issues between her and Wesley. That's gotta count for something, right?
    My list:

Most of Angel was unwatchable so I can't rank them but as for Buffy -
7 - Season 6: Masterfully executed 22 episodes of absolute cynical misery for the audience. Bad Choice of Direction.
6 - Season 4: Seemed like the show was coming apart at the seams here, I think the showrunners knew it as well, which is why the finale was a season 5 prologue.
5 - Season 7: Buffy has always had messages but this season felt like a series of badly disguised lectures, plus there was so much out of character stuff.
4 - Season 1: Was a half and half season, had some great episodes and some weak episodes but it was all interesting.
3: Season 3: This is when Buffy hit it's stride and blew us all away.
2: Season 2 : The addition of Spike, Drusilla and then Angelus really elevated everything from season 1.
1: Season 5: Maybe I'm biased because It was the first season I watched but this story, and it did seem like a self contained story, had a perfect through line and a clever series of mysteries to reveal one after another. It was as Fun for the audience as much as season 6 was not.

    Interesting list.
First let me say that as a character I don't like spike. Just never connected to him so I guess it influences my Angel ranking plus Glory for me was one irritating villain however I did like that series/season.
Anyway here's my rankings of all series of BTVS and ATS....
    12. BTVS 6. This is where I started losing my complete love for the show. Would still watch it but I could really stomach what happened to Buffy on her return. Can't really say I have a particular favourite and least favourite episode either. I'm no really a fan of OMWF. And I do like musicals but as I'm becoming less emotionally attach to the show as a whole, it probably loses it's impact on me plus the ending is just a NO.
I do enjoy the opening two parter on re-watch.
    11. ATS 5. yeah as you can see my dislike for spike makes me not enjoy the series especially as I felt it reduces Angel to a teenage boy with his ridiculous rivalry with Spike because of their feelings for Buffy. I absolutely HATED that and it just ruins this series for me particularly as I already felt that Spike story ended up being so focused on BTVS 6 and 7 as the expense of other characters and that includes Buffy herself. Favourite episode is the same as yours plus I have a love for Smile Time as I love puppet Angel beating the sh*t out of Spike! Worse episode is episode 1 and I think you could probably guess why!
    10. BTVS 7. This is simply for reasons I just stated previously and while I will say I enjoy the last two episodes and particularly the last moments on Chosen, I can't get over the fact of the rest of the last series and how they wrote Buffy and her relationships with her scoobies which was because of the propping up of her thing with Spike. I have re-watch this last series recently and my attachment to the characters aren't the same while in ATS, while I may not like the cangel relationship as a whole, it doesn't for me take over the show and I still love and enjoy all the characters up to the last series. Well with the exception of one!
    9. BTVS 4. Enjoy the series but felt it lost something with the move from the school which of course was necessary plus it had it's worse series/season villain in ALL of the buffyverse! Plus we lose Oz and it something I still am heartbroken about to gain someone I wish had been staked long ago.
Enjoyed the Faith two parter because both SMG and ED got to show off their acting skills and then it lead to the the brilliant two parter in ATS. And of course Hush which was so amazingly and brilliantly thought out and done.
Worse episode would be between Wild at Heart but that is because of the emotions not the actual content in the episode and also the episode with the return of Captain Peroxide!
    8. ATS 4. I enjoy this series and probably was one of a very few who didn't have a problem with the development between Cordelia and Connor because it stop whatever was happening with Angel and Cordelia. I don't think they handled it in the best way but then again knowing that the character of Cordelia was still going to be killed off then I've made my peace with it and am frankly glad that how they planned it did not happen because too much of their later stories for Buffy and Angel's other prominent relationship kind of felt like a rehash of what happened in their other important relationship but just trying to go about it from a different angle.
And I will absolutely say that I like the inclusion of Connor as Angel's son even if I didn't think it was executed as well as it could have been so I'm glad that Connor was born and did not die.
I'd say I especially love the last three episodes of the series of course starting from Sacrifice because I hated Jasmine.
    7. BTVS 1. Now yes it isn't written as great as the rest of any of the series of either show but it's still series where I got hook on the show and i guess it has sentimental value for me.
Unlike you I love The Pack especially because of NB performance which shook me at the time given how Xander as a character was.
Also love the two parter episodes that introduce us to the characters, Angel where we find out the shock truth about him and obviously Prophecy Girl. Yes there was some dodgy episodes like I robot, you Jane but still it didn't lessen my growing love and enjoyment of the show as a whole and I so was looking forward to the next series/season.
    6. ATS 1. So maybe like BTVS 1, it took a while to find its feet but it was an enjoyable roam and there for me are some wonderful episodes in its first series. Of course the Faith two parter, the final episode, Doyle's final episode and Wesley's introduction but the one that will always resonate with me is IWRY and I make no apologies for it because it's one that emotionally hit me the hardest because of my emotional investment in the characters of Buffy and Angel. As for my least favourite I don't really have one but if I had to go for my least memorable episode then I'd go with yours!

    • @CJPDeQueen
      @CJPDeQueen 4 года назад

      5. BTVS 5. I enjoyed this series and there are of course a few exceptional episodes. And while I agree that The Body is one hello of an emotional episode, I guess because of my emotional attachment to Buffy makes The Gift hit me harder. And it's a series finale that I considered in my top two of season finales from all of the buffyverse series.
I don't or never have a problem with Dawn and like Connor like her includes onto the show because it brings something fresh and different that I feel was needed after series 4.
      4. ATS 3. Now getting into my top 4, you will see there is a pattern but that's simply because I love that there are repercussions from the previous series that continue on to the next series. And while I wouldn't say I was a complete fan of Dangel, I ended up loving their complicated, complexing and compelling relationship for what ended up becoming resulting in Connor.
Lullaby was my favourite episode and Darla's sacrifice was something to behold when watching because it was so unexpected but what a fantastic end to her two series arc on the show.
I personally thought that Holtz was very effective as the series villain considering what damage he did to Connor and how it effected Connor's relationship with Angel so badly. Truly saddens me but I guess the universe was giving some payback to Angel for what he did to Holtz.
      3. ATS 2. So this is for me when ATS starts coming into it's own and I guess not having that much crossover from BTVS helps this.
I didn't think I would love the return of Darla but what a brilliant move that turn out to be. Such a fascinating story that develops between her and Angel. Especially given that it ends up she has come back as a human and what that will mean to her in the end. I so did not want her to go back to being a vampire because of the growth that she and Angel had in their new connection but sadly it wasn't mean to be and obviously with the conception and birth of Connor and also Darla's beautifully play out demise well I happy how things turn out.
      2. BTVS 3. I would say because of most of the episodes, this is probably the best written series of all the buffyverse with hardly a really bad episode within the actual series.
Again with the repercussions from the previous series still causing problems and issues in this series.
The introduction of Faith was great and all that happened to her character was riveting to watch and of course The Mayor. What a brilliant villain and my second best villain of all from the buffyverse.
Looking back I can remember being devastated in the end with Angel leaving but now I can see it was for the best for his character given the development he got to have on his own show. So many, MANY great episodes and like you Amends tops it for me but also the series finale two parter which was a epic end and is just behind The Gift for this reason. No really bad episodes for me although there is one that I could do with out but that is also because of what it does to Willow and Oz but most especially to Xander and Cordy who I really enjoy as a twosome.
And so we come to my top buffyverse series....
No.1. BTVS 2. The game changing series. Now I enjoy the first half of the show even if it was to introduce my most hated buffyverse character!
Yes it might be considered slow pacing but I actually love the build up because it was so COMPLETELY unexpected for what was about to happen.
Plus IMO it got three brilliant 2 parter episodes that steadily change the story moving forward.
The emergence of Angelus was not something I truly appreciated at the time because as a HUGE Bangel fan (and I still am) the lost of Angel was devastating and hurt so bad plus there was no real belief that he was definitely coming back.
But what it did for DB was so fantastic because the way he played him was so brilliantly as I could not believe that the character with the same face as Angel was so vastly different in stature and characteristics. I was stunned and like Buffy it took me a whole to process that he was Angel no more.
The build up to the two parter series finale was just out of this world and the death of Jenny hurt to such a degree because it wasn't something that I could contemplate would EVER happen.
Love the introduction of Oz and the unexpected just enjoyable relationship that develops between Xander and Cordy which for me felt believable in the process from how they started out.
And then we get to Becoming 1 & 2. Just wow. The emotions of what Buffy will have to do. The unfolding stories of Buffy and Angel and how it all came about for them in the lead to this moment. The death of Kendra and how Angelus played Buffy and what harm it caused her friends and what Giles had to endure.
And then we get to the finale battle between Buffy and Angelus and as hard as it is to see I know she has to finish him because Angel is not coming back and Angelus has release Acathla. But then the unthinkable happens and somehow Willow has done it and restore Angel's soul but it's all too late and Buffy has to do the unimaginable and put the sword through Angel which for ever breaks something inside of her. It emotional rips you apart (well it did for me) and SMG plays out all the emotions so brilliantly. It's the one scene that still emotionally punches me in the gut when the sword enters Angel's body.
And I fully believe that because of this moment, it's why Buffy makes that decision in The Gift just again showing the effects and repercussions from what she had to do in the series 2 finale.
So yeah that's it from me. I have to day I never imagine I write such a bloody and extremely LONG comment but here we are.
If you read this I'll be shock but grateful and if you don't well it was good for me to get it off my chest!
      Take care 🤗
