Wesley's character arc is one of my favorites, ever. I completely agree that this show is more about long build-ups and profound moments than about individual episodes, but this is still a pretty great list!!

I couldn’t agree more, wesleys character arc is my favorite thing about the show to be honest.
From season 4 on Wesley goes from a goofy smart guy to a total uncontested badass

    • @benjamin6194

Wesley absolutely stole the show. Then eventually Spike shows up and did the same. And Harmony, Cordelia, Gun Fred/Ilyria. And all the rest. Angel himself is one of my least favorite parts of his own show.

  • @tjz9218

I'm shocked to not see my favorite episode of Angel on this list. "I will remember you". It has to be one of the saddest, heartbreaking, soulcrushing, gutpunching episode in TV history.
Angel is given What he always wanted has what might have been the greatest day of his existence then has to give It up to because he knows he has to continue his crusade and he will be the only person who will ever know that day happened. I wept full on tears. I felt Angel's pain it was amazing.
Otherwise good list. Keep It up.

I like this episode, but it is not one of my favorites because it's a bit expected. I knew they are going to make an episode with this story line. It almost felt obligatory.

This episode, I feel is only great if you are a fan of the Buffy/Angel relationship. It felt like fan service. Well-done fanservice, but fanservice none the less. Angel's show was not about his and Buffy's relationship, so therefore I agree with it not being here.

I love your point about Not fade away, and it brings up full circle to this little gem from Angel in the episode "Epiphany": Angel: Well, I guess I kinda worked it out. If there's no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters... , then all that matters is what we do. 'Cause that's all there is. What we do. Now.

    • @TheGeorgeD13

Well, you could also compare it to Buffy and it works even better. Buffy was about growing up and in many ways, Angel is about being an adult. For it to end the way it did fits that theme very well.

I heard originally Sarah Michelle Gellar was supposed to be in that 5th season episode to get Angel (his character) back on track, but she couldn’t at the time and so they had Charisma in it. Also, Sarah was supposed to be in the finale and even told Joss she would love to do it, but Joss thought that people would focus too much on Buffy being there and they wanted it to be focused on Angel.

    Here's my personal top 10!
    10. Damage (I don't really see this one on lists but I loved the idea that some of the newly powered potential slayers are not just strong healthy women, but suffering damaged people that are suddenly given superpowers.)
    9. The Bachelor Party
    8. Rm w/a Vu
    7. Smile Time
    6. Waiting in the Wings
    5. A Hole in the World
    4. Birthday (Cordy is my favorite character so the Cordy-centric episodes just kill it for me everytime)
    3. Hell-Bound
    2. You're Welcome
    1. Hero (To me the theme of the show is strongest in episodes like this and that hero send off is so devastatingly perfect)

Not quite in order but my top 10 would be:
    1. Never Fade Away
    2. Reunion
    3. Reprise (mainly for the elevator ride and the following epiphany)
    4. Five by five
    5. Sleep Tight
    6. Lullaby
    7. Spin the bottle
    8. Hero
    9. A hole in the world
    10. Smile Time
Those top 3 are the ones that have stuck with me the most, partly because it matched my beliefs that there is no meaning to life other than what it means to us, and because I remember the goosebumps I felt when Angel locked them in the cellar!

  • @badquestion4785

I really like Angel bc it's one of the few shows that displays that good people can be punished for their mistakes. On most shows, bad people get punished for their sins, for being weak. But on Angel, a good person, like Wesley, can be willing to sacrifice himself and his comfort, be willing to do almost anything to do a right thing, but still make a mistake a be punish for it. Being a good person, trying to do a right thing, sometimes is not enough. You can cause a lot of harm by trying to do a right thing. But at the same time, the show doesn't become amoral. You should still try to do good, just know that it's usually very difficult to know what is the right thing to do, and even good acts have horrible consequences.

Season 5 of ANGEL is my favorite and at least based on the number of episodes in your top 10, it might be yours, as well. Then we have Season 3 with 3 entries and 1 each for the remaining seasons. I might have put FIVE BY FIVE in place of HERO but then maybe I'm also fixated on a specific moment (Faith breaking down in Angel's arms), though I felt like that episode was the one that truly distinguished ANGEL from BUFFY: Angel was a show about saving souls.

'Angel' is one of my all-time favorite shows. There were some episodes I don't really remember that much since the show was no longer in reruns, but I did remember watching it and/or recording them before I went to school. So yeah. The show was pretty fantastic. Also, I agree that "Not Fade Away" was one of the show's best episodes. Yes, the show was canceled at the time, but I think it was a superb way to end the show. Lastly, I had no idea this show was a spinoff of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' until I did some research.

  • @templar1881

I would have a hard time picking a favorite episode, because it is hard to take the show on an individual basis, when watching I just keep going from the first episode to the end, even if that does take weeks. However Smile Time was definitely good, especially the fact that it takes Angel until the next episode to change back and I like Spike's episode in season 1, particularly the part where he is on the roof top filling in the dialogue for the conversation between Angel and the woman he saved. "Say no more away to the Angelmobile."

Just wanted to point out that Smile Time is right before Hole in The World ;)
Also, at the time of filiming Not Fade Away, they did know that the show had been cancelled, they werent expecting another season. Thats why around halfway through season 5 the show seems to do a 180 and the tone changes, because they were wrapping things up. I dont know exactly when they found out the show had been cancelled, but it was well before Not Fade Away

Season 5 is my favourite. It had all of the right elements, every character fully realised, great chemistry between the actors and a solid plot. Season 1 was the show trying to find its voice. Season 2 established the characters that would be part of the core and returning cast. Season 3 and 4 was the introduction of at times really stupid plot points that didn't quite work or seemed overwrought. Season 5 feels like an ending all the way through, even though they didn't plan it that way. They hit it out of the park.

With Charisma Carpenter. I love her and the character of Cordelia. Apparently there was issues with the Network picking up Angel for season 5 after Buffy ended. Joss Convinced the network to pick up the show if they brought back Spike for Angel. James Marsters stated would come back for the same salary as he had on Buffy but they had no extra money which left the show in pickle as couldn't afford to pay both Charisma and James as "regulars".

About Lindsey: He is actually one of my top 5 favorite characters. I was so heartbroken when he returned as a villain, because I had such high hopes for him when he left Los Angeles in, "Dead End." I honestly thought that if he did come back, it would be so he could help Angel and work for the side of good. I truly believed that he had been redeemed. I was honestly, truly heartbroken when I realized that he was still on the side of evil.
The phrase, "There's a hole in the world," is especially poignant to me, because I feel that it describes the impact that Fred's death made on Team Angel. Wesley especially.

I’ve got a deep and abiding love and understanding of Angel as a whole. As to be expected of any fan who watched the series start to finish countless times. I think you’re right on the money with your top picks. At least for the most part, imho. I was watching every single week when season 5 debuted episodes, and I’ve never been more stunned and emotionally crippled, and frozen in shock when the screen went black. It took me some time to accept that it was over. That last scene is desperate and triumphant and tragic, and it’s goddamn perfect. God, I wish they still made shows like this.

My favourite thing about Smile time is that it's a hilarious episode about dying children. To take something so horrible to think of, even for someone who doesn't have, nor plans to have children, and make it an absolute giggle fest.
My favourite scene is when they are in the Hell dimension and Angel is stuck in his demon form, Fred lures him away from the others with blood. I don't know why but there's something really moving about that scene.
Also, that dimension with dance but no music is truly hellish, lol.

One of my favorite Angel episodes did not make your list. The one titled "Shiney Happy People", when the goddess Jasmine arrives. It's brilliantly written and Fred takes the lead on this one because she can see through her monsterous appearance. How she gets Angel on her side is also very clever; It's like an episode that deals in the Parallel Universe genre where the team feels that the rest of the world has gone crazy (Classic Science Fiction). The kicker at the end, Lyla offers them Wolferman and Hart because they have done something truly Evil, they ended world peace.

Smile time has got to be my favourite episode. Just hilarious. You know I actually really hated the way they ended Angel but after listening to your interpretation of it I'm looking at it differently and see now that actually it did have its merits in ending the way it did. (I'm not into comics so didnt bother reading them) If they did all end up dying you gotta think... Poor Spike! He gets brought back after sacrificing himself to save the world in Buffy only to have to sacrifice himself AGAIN!!

  • @adorkability
    @adorkability 6 лет назад +1

Not sure I agree 100% with your list, but all the ones you picked were excellent. I agree with you about the comic continuation to a degree. I've read both the Buffy and Angel ones since they began. Both have had some good parts, but overall I think they've taken the characters in directions they probably would't have gone on the small screen.

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  6 лет назад +1

I was ok with the comics doing things they couldn't have done on screen in terms of scope and magic, etc. But they just felt off. Buffy Season 8 started off well and ended more or less ok but there's a chunk in the late middle that's just a mess and so many unrealized ideas or underutilized elements. I couldn't even finish the first volume of Angel: After the Fall. It didn't help that the art did not look like the characters and I kept going "wait, who is that supposed to be?"

    • @adorkability
      @adorkability 6 лет назад

Yeah, Angel: After the Fall was kind of rough. I didn't really care for any of the Angel comics that IDW put out. I think the title got much better after it went to Dark Horse, except for this last "season" which really sucked.

There are three characters deaths that have cut the deepest, I mean ugly crying, and changed the way I watch the shows from then on are, Fred, Wash (Serenity), and Ianto Jones (Torchwood). I just realized that that Whedon is responsible for 2/3 of that pain, something to think about. I love Angel and I can defiantly see an argument for it being better then Buffy, but Fred's death effected me so much it actually is hard for me to rewatch the show. I know that may be silly but I loved her character so much and I rooted for her and Weasly to be together and to have that pulled away in the way it was, just ouch. It was ballsy and very well written and I love Amy Acker and the way she could play these polar opposite characters so well was fantastic. I really have never watched the last season of after the first showing it just make me too sad. Love the lists and your channel!

My list would be the same, though I would swap out the puppet episode with Five by Five.
Faith is my favorite Buffyverse character, if you couldn't tell by the username, lol, and I loved how even though she was bad and dark on Buffy, this episode was gritty and darker to match the tone of Angel.
The fight scene in the rain at the end, when you learn Faith's self-destructive behavior brought her to LA not for her to kill Angel, but for him to kill her. It was so beautiful.

I can just go ahead and agree with your list because I’ve never myself thought about a Top 10 for Angel (for Buffy, yes). And for the very same reasons you gave for this being a difficult list to compile. Not a lot of self-contained episodes. I remember more accurately the story arcs in Angel VS individual episodes. Well, I do want to say, the episode where they all revert to their teenage selves. I might have included that one, it was hilarious. I mean, Fred asking Angel if he has any weed! But anyway, I pumped my fists in the air when you revealed “Not Fade Away” was your favorite, I was sooooo hoping you’d say it was! Such a great episode! And it did end PERFECTLY. Illyria: “I wish to do more violence!” Angel: “Personally, I want to slay the dragon.” Angel: “Let’s get to work.” SCHWING!* Fabulous.

I'm an oddball in that I watched Angel when it ran without ever watching Buffy first. I think it was that I was in my late thirties at the time and just didn't feel the pull of a high school show. Then in 2008 I discovered Buffy with a vengeance and watched all of it and Angel in sequence in about a month and a half. Now it's hard to choose a favorite between them.

I struggle with picking out top episodes for the show because of its structure compared to BtVS. I agree about how ATS titles aren't as indicative of the episode's content as on BtVS, but I also think that BtVS seasons were more defined than ATS, helped in large part because each BtVS season had its own unique Big Bad, while ATS had Wolfram & Hart fairly consistently in some way, as well as having Angel's biggest opponent be himself in a lot of ways. That said, I like some of ATS titles better than BtVS titles, particularly "City Of", "Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been", "Not Fade Away", and "Slouching Toward Bethlehem". I've never been able to figure out a specific reason or reasons why.
I know "Not Fade Away" would be on my list, probably in #1 and for the same reasons--it's a wonderfully done episode, it's the perfect culmination of the series, and I, too, appreciate the cut to black. I think "Not Fade Away" is actually one of the best, if not the best, TV show finales. I also know that "A Hole in the World" would also make my list. "Epiphany" might, and so might the episode just before it, but I'm not sure if I like the episodes as a whole or just, for instance, Angel's scene in the elevator with Holland Manners, Angel trying to lose his soul with Darla (the BtVS episode "Amends" is crucial here), Angel saving Kate, and Angel's final scene with Kate.
However, at the end of the day, I think it's easier for me to pick favorite storylines than particular episodes. So, in no particular order:
    1. Faith's crossover in S1 ("Five By Five" and "Sanctuary")
    2. Darla's resurrection in S2 as a human/wrestling with her humanity and trying to be a vampire again/accepting her death/becoming a vampire and trying to darken Angel again.
    3. Darla's pregnany--just everything about it
    4. The miniarc from S4 where Angelus and Faith return; I hate everything to do with Cordelia as the Beastmaster ("The Assassination of Cordelia Chase" explains why) and the Jasmine storyline, while good enough and containing an interesting dialogue on free will and morality, wasn't good enough to me to justify what happened to Cordy's character. That said, Angelus and Faith duking it out, with the reveal that Faith kicked his ass better than Buffy while high as a kite knowing she'd lose and thus hoping to drug Angelus was fun. I liked how Lorne stayed by Faith the entire time, and Faith kicking the crap out of Connor at the end of the episode was nothing short of cathartic to me. Also, that Wesley sprung Faith, that Faith protected Wesley in the breakout, Faith's "Are you a murderer? Well, I am" scene with Connor, and the return of her innuendos.
    5. Illyria's arc. It's one of the reasons I'd actually try reading the comics, which have never seemed as good to me as the show, but Illyria is actually one of my favorite characters from the Buffyverse. Seeing this former "god-king of the primordium" adjust to life in a human host in a modern-day city in a world ruled by humans, watching this former demon king discover and deal with its own humanity--yeah, I'd heard that people didn't like Illyria and I never understood why. Plus, so much acting praise for Amy Acker.
In general, I have a soft spot for S1, as rough as it is, because I have a thing for beginnings. S1, as problematic as it was, had some diamonds in the rough, and because of it, we get the rest of the show. Is it the best season? No; I'd probably say S5, although I love so much of 2 and 3; 4 is definitely the worst, which is sad, because it had potential.
But "Not Fade Away" draws on the scene between Angel and Kate from the end of S2 "Epiphany", which, to me, is ATS' answer to BtVS' "Lie To Me", as well as an elaboration of it. "Lie To Me" gave us the "I don't have a choice."/ "Yes, you do. You don't have a good choice but you have a choice" conversation between Ford and Buffy, which helps set up the existentialist philosophy in the Buffyverse ("Amends" helps too, as well as "The Wish"). "Epiphany" spells it out a bit more clearly. So, in that regard, "Not Fade Away" isn't just the perfect finale for ATS, but for the Buffyverse as a whole, and it's one of the reasons why I'd probably say it's a better finale than "Chosen". "Chosen" was a good enough send-off for BtVS, but "Not Fade Away" pulled double duty as the farewell for both ATS and the entire television Buffyverse, and it was beautiful.

My favorite Angel episodes are all of Faith’s episodes, Cordelia’s early season episodes and all of season 5. Faith was the only good thing about season 4 and god I wish she had her spin off. In the perfect world she’d sign up for it now. It’s the only reboot of Buffy that I would take.

Excelent episodes not mentioned are Beneath the first episode of season 4: Dark Wesley having a relationsip with laila morgen and holding Justine in a cage. And Angel getting tortured by conner in his dreams. And Angel dealing with connor in a fitting way. Fred being slightly crazy while torturing connor. If only the following episodes would have followed up.
Season 2 Where where darlas backstory is shown.(because she never got one on buffy)

Angel was such an awesome and underrated show. As far as spinoffs go it’s one of the best because it found its own identity whilst still feeling like part of the Buffyverse. Other spinoffs just
feel like soulless (no pun intended) cash-ins whereas Angel dived deeper in the vampire lore and gave us rich expansive complex characters. Some great picks in there- don’t feel guilty for picking Smile Time 😁😁😁 it’s an exceptionally strong episode because it took a concept that could’ve easily backfired and just went with it. Love love love that one.
Season 1 gets a bad rep but it has some class episodes like ‘I will remember you’ and ‘five by five’ - they would defo be in my top 10. I also love ‘spin the bottle’ - like Buffy’s ‘The wish’ it was a clever what-if concept which showed all the characters development from their beginnings who where they are now.
Would love to hear what your least favourite episodes are for Angel. I’m tempted to do a top 10 angel episodes now so thanks for the inspiration. Can’t wait to see what you do next. Xx
