@legoking6165 I heard once, a very long time ago, that he was descended from Spanish aristocracy. His father was Spanish and Roger was born within the sound of the bells at St Mary Le Bow church and was proud to therefore be a true Cockney.
The father of a former colleague of mine was a close friend of Roger Delgado. The boy would often come home from school to find his Dad and The Master sitting in the kitchen, drinking tea and eating biscuits. The lad was terrified of him. Roger himself was a charming man, remembered with respect and affection. I spoke with John Levene (Sergeant Benton) about him & John was full of thanks for Roger and Jon Pertwee helping him learn the craft of acting.
One could only imagine what conversations would be had and if Roger put on his Master persona. “Hello little Timmy. I hear from your progenitor here that you’ve gotten a B- at school this week...”
Another fantastic video! To me, Delgado isn't just the best Master, he remains the definitive Master. No other actor has inhabited the character the same way he did, although I Derek Jacobi has come close. It's such a tragedy that we lost Delgado so soon, but I think this is a wonderful tribute to him. That autograph blew my mind, by the way.
The character was his and his alone, in my opinion. The role should never have been recast. The rotting corpse in Deadly Assassin was in particularly poor taste.
I love the easter eggs to later Doctor Who lore in the animated versions as it links these various eras together, so seeing these wanted posters for Delgado and Dhawan were funny to see.
Well, Jamie, you fill me with joy. I've been binge-watching some of your Dr. Who videos, and as an oldie I am loving the love someone younger is showing towards the original series. Thank you for spreading this love around. Also, Delgado was awesome, and it's sad that in any timeline we wouldn't have gotten him past Pertwee's run. Can you imagine Delgado and McCoy trying to out-mastermind each other?
I do say Jamie had Roger Delgado lived longer than he did, he was to make a final appearance in the final Jon Pertwee a six part serial called the Final Game which was to have written out the Master and the 3rd Doctor in a huge final showdown the Master was to be killed off and blown up in an enormous cosmic explosion which would devastate the Doctor and also the relationship between the 2 arch-enemies would reveal the Master was a darker version of the Doctor and it is possible the Master overcame his evil ways to save the lives of the Doctor and many other people and show he really had a genuine affection for his onetime friend and arch-enemy the Doctor . I do think had things worked out like that, it is a possibility the Master may well have been only a Jon Pertwee enemy and might not ever have encountered subsequent Doctors at all and no other actors who have since played the Master ever got the part and it is also possible none of the post Roger Delgado Master stories would have ever been made and we could have lost a huge chunk of the things we got after Delgados passing sad as it was.
Congrats on reading "The Dark Path". That's some real fandom! I read it back in the day and remember it being a lot of fun. "Face of the Enemy" was also fun and ties into Inferno.
@randallbesch2424 Indeed, he was a decade earlier. I think if Nigle Neal's BBC Quatermass series's were not successful, Dr. Who would have been harder to get approved for production? There was another one in the 1950's A for Andromeda that was supposed to be great too, but sadly, it did not survive.
LOL! @ 2:69 - The expression on Jo Grant's face when she realizes that this was Sgt. Benton's first time inside the TARDIS. Delgado would of made a really good "Ra's al Ghul".
I'm so happy to hear of a similar experience with Katy Manning. I met her a few years ago when she signed my mini Tardis. She told me stories of all the converations she had with Jon Pertwee while the two of them were crammed into what was really just a closet...and how she wished she could shrink down to fit inside again (my Tardis is only 18 inches tall).
Were the doctor and the master best friends until he looked into the mirror of forever, which did drive him insane. The thing the time lords look into as a child that shows past and future all at once. This is why he never truly does anything to put an end to the master, as he did not choice to be this way and was once a very good person.
Steely eyed Roger Delgado is my favourite thing about Doctor Who! He's magnetic... :) He sadly died in 73 when I was born, along with Tolkien and Bruce Lee, so I try to carry some of their spirits with me.... I love the Master's fiendish gadgets, the gas grenades and masks in Mind of Evil were dead clever. The prison tubes in his TARDIS in Colony in Space were the creations of a hardcore manic. Such a fun adversary.....
Roger Delgado was a legend no master has come close to him. No one has bettered him Feel only Sasha Dawson had been the only one capturing his brilliance.just to mention think I’m one of the new comics they mentioned how he had been burned and how he become a decayed master.
Thank you so very much, and kudos on your Delgado Mistress. Love it, Delgado was one of a kind, you embody his spirit. I could well imagine you uttering his most famous line from Terror of the Autons. Delgado would have a deliciously wicked smile at your homage to him. Thank you again
I will say Jamie that Roger Delgado had he lived longer might have had the chance to appear in sci-fi series, Blake,s Seven and also he would no doubt have been cast as a villain and he would have done really well in that series had he been still with us. I also say it is a shame the Master did not feature in Dr Who for the 1st and 2nd Doctors eras but we had 2 different Time lords the Monk and the War Chief who many fans claim are earlier proto Masters but I am not sure I agree with that Myself. I also say that Time Lord villain the Valeyard, was IMO a much bigger and to some extent more interesting villain and character than the Master and also the Valeyard IMO was more dangerous a villain than the Master given what the Master stated that the Valeyard was a darker version of the Doctor himself and between his 12th and final incarnations.
I do say the disguise the Master,s TARDIS took in Terror of the Autons as a pale blue Lorry for transporting horses was awesome and as a pale green computer tape deck it was also awesome and at numerous times diguised as a tall black longcase clock in the Deadly Assassin and the Keeper of Traken was also awesome too and given how much the Master,s TARDIS has a fully working chameleon circuit and also working steering mechanism too it does not ever suffer from the 2 main defects the Doctors TARDIS does like a motorcar that constantly keeps breaking down and going into the garage for constant repairs .
I would have loved to see The Final Game produced. It would have been so awesome 😃 Romana is one of the greatest! Had a crush on Romana II for the longest time
Never knew about the 'Final Game' - it would've been fun if they went down the corporeal dark side of the Doctor route (like Dr Jekyl and Mister Hyde). Great show - and somehow you managed to pick my favourite clips.
To be fair. The “Missy” incarnation was fun.. liked the chemistry based on the “history?” Also. My wife told me she had head teacher known to her as “the master.” Freaked her out a little at the time.. regarding this era of Doctor Who.
Delgado may have been the first timelord to carry the name the Master, but the character is clearly modeled around another villain called the War Chief from final story of the 2nd doctor The War Games shown in 1969.
Whilst extended fiction says the Master and War Whief are the same, I prefer to think they are their own characters. I love the War Chief. He would have been a great recurring character, which obviously is where the Master came into play. I'm glad that the new audiences will get to hopefully enjoy him this Christmas!
@@The-Cosmic-Hobo Not sure about extended fiction, but to me it seems obvious that their similarities are more like convergent evolution (or recycling villains) than them being the same character, as the Masters first appearance is not billed as the return of the War Chief, and it would have been a no brainer as Dr Who has always loved recurring anatognists.
He did Comedy in the 1960s. Two examples are his roles in the 1966 film, `The Sandwich Man` and a 1968 episode of `Harry` one of the Harry Worth series.
I do say jamie in Roger Delgados final story Frontier in Space I read that his allies were to, have been originally the Cybermen instead of the Ogrons and also the idea got scrapped because Terry Nation the Dalek creator refused to allow his creation to appear in a story with other returning villains like the Cybermen, or Ice Warriors with the master they were his bosses in that story although he really is using them like they use him.
I say Jamie have you ever seen sci-fi series, Blake,s Seven from the late 70s to early 80s and it is awesome to see and react to if you have not ever seen Blake,s Seven.

So far (currently watching john pertwee for first time as he is my least favourite classic doctor), they over used the Master way too much. However my favourite moments are when the Master and the Doctor team up and have to work together.
Can we take a moment to acknowledge what a cool name Roger Delgado is?
His full name is even cooler:
Roger Caesar Marius Bernard de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto

Roger Delgado knew how to act. He could act menacingly without resorting to physical display of violence.
The original and best Master!
The original and in my humble opinion still the best incarnation of the master. No one was as menacing as Roger...
I agree Roger Delgado is the one and only Master,
its a shame and how roger delgado died in 1973 he was the best master and pertwee from my era
The Master Delgado was such a great character!!!

Often Imitated, never duplicated. Roger was the standard by which all versions of the Master are measured. Still my fave even after almost 60 years.

He's my favorite Master, too. Anthony Ainley is a close second and good continuation of Delgado's work! Love your cosplay as well!
What a great summary of the late great roger Delgado. Good job. You can really see your passion for the master
I think Gomez worked great as the Master as she retained that hidalgo vibe of the original article
He was so perfectly cast. Such a shame that modern era just aimed to make the characters like Mr Mxyzptlk crossed with the Joker...

Roger played Hugh Conrad, a newspaper journalist in the 1955 BBC series Quatermass II.
Quatermass the alternate Dr. Who.
