They had gone through so much together most notably starting The Firm in 1962 and although he married several times, she never did. Even her relationships with other men didn't work out because she still loved him.
Allen Ludden, Betty White's third and last husband, died in 1981 from cancer after about 18 years of marriage. I'd like to believe that she was channeling her grief over the loss of her husband when they shot this scene. Rose moving to Miami could be a reference to Betty White moving on to doing The Golden Girls, from just doing game shows and the occasional TV movie.
When she says "I miss you Charlie", I can always really feel it and can relate, because I know (like probably everyone does) what it's like to feel that feeling and miss someone/something that will never be there again.
Those lines were actually sincere from Betty White. It's obvious she was talking to her later husband, Allen Ludden who passed away in 1981. She had been asked a few time why she never remarried and she always replied, "Why should I? If you had the best why need the rest?"
I loved this show and if I am really honest here, "Moms" kinda follows this shows rules: Be funny, goofy and relatable, but also tackle social issues and prejudgments and remove the stigma from many topics (GG: sexuality, divorce and illnesses; Moms: alcohol abuse, relapse and trauma)

There’s something so satisfying about Rose getting a scene all to herself, without the back and forth we associate with her. We get to see the validity of HER experience her and not through the lens of a third person. It’s such a powerful reinforcement of WHY Rose came to Miami seemingly out of nowhere.
"I love you, Charlie. I miss you'" Dammit, a 41 year old man shouldn't be tearing up. But this scene is utterly heartbreaking. Betty White is an amazing actress, and this is one of her best moments.
b/c its easy to relate to, especially when she says, "I miss you." For those of that grieve or have grieved deeply, it brings us back to our own loss(es).
I watched this with my husband. We've been married for two years so far. I couldn't imagine what life would be like after he passes away. Women tend to live longer.

That rare "St. Olaf story" that was funny, but unbelievably poignant & touching. A shame they did not show the other girls' reaction to it in the next scene. I wonder if Betty was able to get through this monologue (always incredibly hard to do) in one take.
I think they didn't show the other girls' reactions to it because it would have taken away from the scene. It was very poignant so it (like most such scenes) worked best just being cut away like that.
such a thing doesnt exist this wasnt a st olaf story - this was a story set in st olaf a st olaf story is, by nature, a seemingly (often actually) pointless, painfully, hilariously drawn out re-telling of bizarre events and circumstances involving complete idiots in an area where idiocy is the norm. these are all treated by the narrator as perfectly normal. it is then topped with an idiotic twist ending locations are preferably rural, pastoral. listeners should be portrayed as almost in physical pain. remember that litle story in the middle of the scene about rose buying a suit? that's a st olaf story. remember little mei ling's coming out party? that's a st olaf story - well, more like a proto-st-olaf story, but still - it got the humor out the same way as rose's st olaf stories, but it's not a recalling, but a hypothetical scenario. it ... counts, i guess
I think the other girl's commentary wasn't needed. The moment in itself spoke a million words... touching yet sad. Rose's last cake in St. Olaf was one that changed her life. Seeing how she coped with Charlie's passing and engaged in her decisions past his death. Truly; a marriage people strive to have where even when one dies... one looks vibrantly to the future and reminisce with joy of memories of the one we love.
You can literally see the heartache in her eyes in this scene - especially when she has that meek little smile on her face. Replace "Charlie" with "Allen" and it becomes Betty, not Rose, and that's a beautiful thing. Betty White has always been and always will be one of the finest actors ever.
Never really known betty as a dramatic actress, but, she did drama wonderfully in this part. one of the saddest scenes in the history of the show, IMO.

I have heard this was two dedications. One to Charlie and to her real life husband the late Allen Ludden. Betty White was a true icon. I wish the Golden Girls would have done one episode where we could have seen Charlie. Well now she is reunited with the rest of the girls. RIP Betty. You will be missed
This scene is so underappreciated and yet so important in understanding Rose as a person. Having to spend 8 months alone in a house after decades of marriage, entering every room or wanting to share something with him knowing he wouldn't be there but still not used to it yet. That's why she left. Not because she's trying to find him out there, she accepted that he was gone, but to find who she's supposed to be without Charlie because all she's feeling now is out of place and lost. That's what Rose has been all this time. She's not dumb, just lost. Edit: After hearing that her last words were about her late husband, it makes me wonder how much real heartbreak Betty put into this scene. He passed four years before Golden Girls premiered.
I was crying everytime I watch this. The crack in her voice at 3:32 is so heartbreaking-you can definitely feel her loneliness and pining. Such fine acting.
This scene is especially poignant for me right now. My father passed away two months ago. My parents were married for over 40 years. And it breaks my heart to see my mother so alone. :'(
“Rose” and “Charlie” are finally together again. Thank you God for reuniting Betty White with her husband. She’s waited very patiently and she’s waited long enough.
Just heard the news and had to come back to my favorite scene from the show. Thank you for the laughs and tears Betty. You’ve taught me how to handle grief more than you’ll know.
Its always that quiver in her voice as she says "I love you Charlie, I miss you." That hits me, as my Grandfather passed away and it always reminded me of that. I know my grandma never talked to him like Rose did. But it always makes me think of her and maybe what things she did in habit despite him being gone. Always chokes me up and teary eyed. Every damn time I hear Betty White's genuine voice in that single line.
Outstanding work/monologue by White, she covered such a variety of emotions without missing a beat, and included the audience and viewer in such a poignant way. Excellent scene.
Notice how Charlie is the only husband, dead or otherwise, that we never see in the show, even in flashbacks. There was one episode where Blanche's husband George appeared. It was a dream episode, but still, we got to see him. He was also played by the same person who played George's younger brother Jamie (but they weren't twins). We also see Sophia's husband in a few episodes, played nicely by Sid Melton.
This must have been so hard for Betty to do when his real life husband, Allen, had died few years earlier. Her last words were Allen when she passed away. She loved him so much. Gosh I'm crying so much thinking about it
I think she pulled from her own life for a moment as she said "I love you Charlie, I miss you" I think she thought of her one and only true love Allen Ludden at that moment.
I'm sitting here wiping tears away, but I do not find this depressing at all. The pathos at the start of the scene and the poignancy of the rest is beautiful. She portrays the feelings that we have for lost loved ones so brilliantly.
I think that this is one of few of Rose's stories that is actually very touching. It is also one of the ones I like. I also liked the one where she was talking to the old woman in the train station and the woman starts talking about her dead daughter and Mother's Day.
Watching the scene on her actual 100th birthday, teaching us how to say goodbye to a dead loved one, on her characters birthday. It’s just serendipitous.
I can *never* watch this scene without breaking into tears. Betty White may have had the silliest character in Rose, but this monologue-sweeping, deep, and packed with emotion-is a masterclass in acting. Her barely contained grief on “I love you, Charlie. I miss you...” Then the sudden shift to forcing herself to be happy-“It’s my birthday!”-sounding somehow like a little girl turning five...I don’t know how she does it. And kudos to the writers to pairing this heartbreaking scene with the infamously funny “Mr. Ha Ha” bit (where Dorothy squares off against a clown at a kiddie restaurant for her own birthday-“GET *BENT,* HA-HA!”). It really shows off the range of the actresses. Legends, all of them...
I can personally relate to this scene, when I lost my sister to breast cancer I couldn’t bear the months I lived in her house. It was perfectly built for her and i had a blast everytime I visited, bbq, bday parties, Christmas, or days I would call sick to work just to hangout with her . Memories are what haunted that house, waking up and hoping to see her in the kitchen , sitting in the living room, putting her makeup on at her vanity.....As much as I didn’t want to I had to move forward and leave the house I had continue my life without her. The last thing I did in that house was visit each room and reminisced about the good days. As I locked the door I literally hugged the house. I said I was sorry and I miss you but I have to go now
I watched Golden Girls off and on when it aired, and in reruns. But until today, October 2021, I had never seen this scene before. It is heartbreaking, sentimental -- and a masterclass of acting. It should be shown in every acting class because dramatic monologues are hard to do. This scene shows Betty White at the height of her powers. She could move millions to laughter and tears. 😊😢👍❤
This is my favorite scene in this episode. Because I love how she kept an empty chair for Charlie and Charlie was listening to her. And she held him in her heart ❤
When I watch this scene, it makes me feel so sorry for Rose... When she says "I love you Charlie", it just makes me cry... Rose and Charlie are two very special people together and I love that about them... I love you, Rose for making me feel so much love for you. Best of luck and blessed be, Rose.

And if you always had a very beautiful cake that was always beautiful enough, then you would have a smile on your face all the time and wouldn't even care if other people were enjoying their own cakes! We'll really miss you, Betty White. Thanks for the memories, our Golden Girl.
This hits hard cause she passed right before her 100th birthday
They done killed my girl
Yes, SO sad.
We are all feeling this scene today. Everyone. Rest in Paradise Ms. While. Thank you for being our friend and a friend to animals everywhere.
Rose had such a pretty house!!! 😍
Anyone else come straight here after hearing the news of Betty’s passing? 😭 💔
Yes🥺🥺🥺
This hits different now. Rest In Peace, Betty. You will be loved and missed.
An absolute masterclass from Betty White. Breaks my heart every single time.
What a treasure. Thank you for all the great years, laughs, and smiles. Rest easy. ❤️
I think that this is one of few of Rose's stories that is actually very touching. It is also one of the ones I like. I also liked the one where she was talking to the old woman in the train station and the woman starts talking about her dead daughter and Mother's Day.
I love you, Charlie” = “I love you, Allan”. I believe she felt this way when she said this.
What a top talent!!!
RIP Betty. Thanks for the laughs!
amazing; I have always felt this scene got her the Emmy in the first season
this ep was season 2
This was bittersweet for Rose. Also, this part was sad to see, and she will remember her husband no matter what.
Allen Ludden
I think Betty was secretly talking to Allen when she did this scene. They are together again forever. RIP Betty
It's a good bet Betty was really channeling a conversation to Alan.
Really a heartbreaking moment.
this scene always makes me cry
This will always go down as one of the best acting in a scene on TV ever for me.
Watching the scene on her actual 100th birthday, teaching us how to say goodbye to a dead loved one, on her characters birthday. It’s just serendipitous.
Even watching this now on her 100th birthday is drowning my heart with tears and sorrow. Happy Birthday Betty White…thank you for being a friend
Yo I'm a 19 year old man, 6'2" and called God's Gunny by his students. But this made me cry........ Poor Rose (Betty)!
my favorite scene of Rose's. it's really very touching! a class actress
We miss you, Betty. Thank you for being a friend.
R.I.P to this legend. this hit so much harder today.
She's with her Allen now.
Betty White shows just how good she is in this scene. So much emotion conveyed and she did it alone.
because she was talking about her late husband, Allen
This scene hits hard now
I cried more than I should have when I saw this.
She was referring to Allen Ludden her husband.
Without a doubt.
Rose surprising herself with the cake is so adorable and in-character
Heard she passed away today and instantly thought of this little scene
I said I was sorry and I miss you but I have to go now
Exhibit A on what makes Betty White such a great actress.
I am going to cry an ocean of tears the day we finally lose Betty
This didnt age well....😔
Just beautiful. Happy 100th Bday, Betty...we miss you.
Betty White's sincerity and sadness in this scene are really moving.
When I watch this scene, it makes me feel so sorry for Rose... When she says "I love you Charlie", it just makes me cry... Rose and Charlie are two very special people together and I love that about them... I love you, Rose for making me feel so much love for you. Best of luck and blessed be, Rose.
"All sorrows in life stem from the lack of cake.
If you had your own cake, you wouldn't bother trying to take away the other person's cake!
And, if the cake you had were beautiful enough, you wouldn't bother trying to melt the icing on that other person's cake!
And if you always had a very beautiful cake that was always beautiful enough, then you would have a smile on your face all the time and wouldn't even care if other people were enjoying their own cakes!
Because you'd be enjoying yours, too!
Therefore, I hereby decree that all sorrows can be fixed by many beautiful cakes!
Bake a cake!"

Interesting, Daria says all sorrows in life can be fixed with pizza.
The time after someone close dies. Expecting them to be there, remembering shared experiences.
Time does help though ... over time, that is. ❤️
I love this scene, it is one of my favorites. It shows Rose at her best. Sweet, funny, vulnerable and melancholy. It’ll make you laugh and cry.
After all these years I remember this scene. The ending is just beautiful.
This scene hits so differently now. :( RIP Betty White
god this scene and betty having recently passed...it's like charlie and rose are together again
Betty was thinking about Allen Ludden and at long last they are reunited for all eternity
RIP Betty White...the last true golden girl
We'll all miss you dearly Betty White. R.I.P.
Tears just dropped from my eyes the moment she said I love u Charlie. U hear her pain and sadness from her voice.
A testament to how great this show was: this scene was funny, heartwarming, and tearjerking, all at the same time
RIP, Betty White.
Rose is with Charlie again…
Crying here. I lost my husband a year afo, well I didn’t lose him, I know where he is but he died after 32 yrs of marriage. If you know of a widow or widower, reach out. We are all broken.
