The fact that this thing is missing so many features, uses an old engine, has had only minor cosmetic changes in the last 13 years, but still increases in cost year over year is INSANE. All the tooling and R&D is paid for now. This thing must PRINT money for Toyota.

I was a mechanic from 2008 to 2017, and the 4 runner has basically been the same vehicle since 2005. The Toyota 4.0L V6 power train is one of the most prolific platforms of all time, being utilized in the older Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Tacoma 05-15, and 4Runner 05-Current. In all those years as an auto mechanic, I have seen precisely ONE of these engines out of the chassis. It had over 200k miles on it when the water pump failed and the owner overheated it so badly that the engine seized. We repaired the cooling system, put new plugs in it, and the owner drove it for another 20k before the head gaskets failed. I bought the truck for 1000$ off of the guy, and when I pulled the engine apart, there were no cracks in the heads or cylinders, no warpage of the block, no leak down on the bench. Got new gaskets and repolished the valves/seats, and I’ve been driving it for 4 years. Truck is about to turn 20 years old and it drives better than my GF’s 6 year old Kia with 100k on it. Anyone that doesn’t “get” the 4Runner popularity just simply doesn’t know. If I were to replace mine with anything, it would just be a new one.

In all the years I've had a 4Runner.. I can't name a single "oh shit" moment I had mechanically. They're absolutely rock-solid. Even the old ones (if you skip the V6 from the 2nd gen, I've got one of those too..).

@@MasonH24 I have seen a lot of major repairs on them. Full rear end rebuilds, trans/torque converter failure, computer/ignition system failure, but the common thread is that those vehicles had 200-300k+ miles on them, and most of the time are abuse related. Granted, I live in a dry climate, so our cars don’t rust out like they do in the Midwest and the South, but my money is still on these trucks being the most reliable vehicles of the modern era.

The thing that makes the 4Runner popular is it stays true to its roots. A body-on-frame, mid-sized truck-based SUV with 4x4, and it’s customization diversity. Something that other competitors don’t offer (well besides of course the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco). Meanwhile the Explorer, Pathfinder, Passport, and Blazer all went soccer moms on us

    • @ryanb8736
      @ryanb8736 3 месяца назад

Body on frame trucks are not good though. They rust and rot. Body movement is bad. Accident ratings are poor. They fold up in accidents. They ride rough and are bouncy. They also have a lot more sway and brake dive.
People love them for 4 wheeling cause they flex. You can add a body lift if needed. Most importantly, they are overhyped.
A unibody structure is best for daily driving. Way more rigid and won’t rot and rust. Accident safely is hugely improved. Handling is sharper as there’s no more body flex. It’s all one piece. They also hold up in accidents very well.
If you do not use them for daily 4 wheeling, they are not worth it. If only used for a daily driver, they are extremely overpriced. Fuel economy makes it even a worse buy.

As a 4runner owner, I just wanted to add that it does have some of the features that Doug says are missing. For example, cooled seats and parking sensors are options on the limited, also most models have remote start if you press the lock twice and hold it down a third time on the key fob, and it doesn't have a power tail gate but the rear windshield can be operated with the key fob by holding lock/unlock buttons. Also the v6 engine did technically come out in the early 2000s but it was overhauled in 2010 with dual VVT that adds about 40 hp.

I think Doug hit the nail right on the head. Part of why I love my 2016 (first vehicle I ever bought brand new) was because it’s a familiar feel to what I was used to. Some of these newer vehicles are great and have cool gizmos, but I like not having to look at the temperature dial to change it, or the fan speed dial and such. I like just knowing where the buttons and knobs are without having to use a touch screen to change settings. Much like touch screen phones, you have to be pretty deliberate in your input with most modern vehicles, and bumpy roads can be infuriating with that. When you’ve got large buttons and knobs, bring on the bumps. You can still keep your eyes on the road and find what you need

Went to go to work and the truck wouldn’t start. Are you kidding me??? A broken radio rendered his truck inoperable. 2 weeks and $1200 later his truck would start again. But consumers gotta have a 42” wide screen in the vehicle to control everything. Just like a dial or push button for 4 wheel drive. What a joke. Go lock the hubs and pull the transfer case lever. If something does go bad it can be fixed relatively inexpensively. This new tech stuff is a joke.

I went hiking last weekend and had to park my Subaru about a mile from the trailhead because the road got too rocky. From that point on, half of the cars that I saw were 4Runners, all with some sort of customization, and every single one of them looked good. • @ViolentMLG

Its a fair point, but there is no way the vast majority of 4Runner buyers buy them because of this.
Most NEW 4Runner owners are moms, just like the F150 is the most sold vehicle in the US, its not tough rugged men buying them.
They were just told its reliable, the tech is primitive so they don't actually have to 'catch up' with it, they're old enough with enough driving EXP that they can actually manage a larger vehicle, its gigantic so it can haul children and whatever else they want on the occasion, and it makes them feel safer due to its size and visibility than your average Corolla or Camry.
Its not a coincidence that its basically the first large SUV Toyota sales besides the Highlander.

I enjoy your reviews, I enjoy your humor. We bought my wife this vehicle - TRD Pro in the Lime Rush. We purchased it new on Feb 28, 2022. You are right, most dealers wanted 10-15K over sticker! We ended up buying hers at Capital Toyota for sticker. Honestly, once she had decided on this vehicle and I would have paid the markup if needed.
We are now empty nesters and this is the first vehicle - in the past 25 years - that will be a vehicle that is HERS ,and and not the kid mobile. We own a horse farm and while we have other vehicles, this is one she can comfortably drive on the road, around our property, off road...anyplace she wants. We have had many vehicles with far more creature comforts over the years; in fact, most of them did. My wife could have basically had any vehicle she wanted (under 125K) and she LOVES this vehicle. It just simply goes where she points it, and the 4WD capability is terrific for a bone stock vehicle.
You did not really score on reliability. However with the exception of Range Rover, most of the vehicles she considered are reliable for the first 50K miles. I daily drive a Tacoma (4X4 TRD OR). I bought it new in Jan of 2019. I now have 210K trouble free (other than routine/recommended) miles on this truck - many of those miles in 4WD. My son has a 2002 Tacoma (4X4 TRD OR) - my best friend purchased it new and sold it to my son about 3 years ago. He now has around 300K trouble free (other than routine/recommended maintenance) miles on this Tacoma. While reliability of the 4 Runner is probably not a huge issue - as many folks will never keep a vehicle long enough to need a vehicle that will go 'forever' - I think the peace of mind plays a major factor in the desirability.
We currently also have 3 GMC Trucks/SUVs too, along with the mentioned Toyotas. While GMC certainly has FAR more creature comforts than do the Toyota ones do, the Toyota SUV/trucks just hold up better for our lifestyle. The 4 Runner can't compete on paper - that is for sure....but on the road and off the road...it is a WINNER.

I’m on my second 4Runner. The limited has work well for me.
Never breakdown, no recall list, 400k miles and motor runs better than a new bronco.
Nobody buy this car for tech. Is built for those who doesn’t have time to be at a mechanic shop & for those who enjoy off road with out worrying is going to break down.

Lol @ runs better than a new bronco. Sorry, I test drove this ancient dinosaur and it in no way runs better than the bronco. This thing was so slow I could barely merge onto the highway. 0-60 seemed like it was 10 seconds. It was also insanely loud for being so slow and having a weaker engine than a bronco. The interior was so cheap I couldn’t help but chuckle knowing Toyota must have like a 10,000% markup on these.

We got to borrow a low mileage, 2020 White 4Runner last weekend. To be honest, the ride was really rough. Could feel every single tiny pot hole & bump. The interior feels outdated & spartan. I know it's not technically a luxury SUV, but expected more for $65k. Ended up parking next to a 2014-2015 4Runner & honestly I think the older models look better and likely ride better too. I think 2014/15 was the sweet spot in terms of features/looks!

I think it's time more auto makers start listening and understand not everyone wants a tiny little turbo charged engine in a throw away piece of junk, car truck or SUV. I've loved 4Runners for years and years, and finally had the good fortune to be able to purchase a 2022 in January. I bought it specifically because it hasn't changed, and is just solid reliable tough transportation. It is vault quiet, built like a Sherman tank, rides great, and requires very little maintenance fuss. One of the last few soliders left that is true to its roots. When you drive it, it feels like you are driving something substantial.
