  • Stella & Sasha welcome Wilfred Reilly to the program for an intriguing conversation touching on gender and medicalization, political affiliations and extremism, violence and discrimination, societal myths and data analysis, and the impact of the internet on niche interests and mental health.
Wilfred Reilly is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Kentucky State University, a historically Black institution. His research interests include International Relations, contemporary American race and gender relations, and the use of modern quantitative/empirical methods to test ‘sacred cow’ theories.
In this episode, they delve into the issues surrounding gender, addressing concerns about youth and gender transition for children. They explore the challenges of obtaining reliable statistics on detransitioning and the difficulties in conducting research in the field of gender due to ideological biases. The conversation underscores the role of media bias and the evolving landscape of identity, alluding to the potential consequences of the medicalization of gender-related issues and the need for more open discussion and data collection considering that even academic studies are sometimes targeted and obstructed by activists.
The discussion also touches on the broader issues of ideological extremism and its implications for society. Wilfred shares his insights into debunking misconceptions related to topics like police violence and discrimination. He also shares about instances of fake hate crimes on college campuses, shedding light on how seemingly innocuous events were misconstrued and magnified, highlighting the prevalence of victimization and the consequences of seeking attention through such incidents. Sasha raises concerns about the impact of such ideological paranoia on people's mental health and interpersonal relationships while Wilfred draws parallels between this ideological extremism and traditional religious beliefs, suggesting that both can lead to a level of paranoia and fear. This conversation offers no shortage of intriguing stories that challenge common narratives and assumptions.

You are not talking about what the current reseach REALLY says? Do schools that contribute (even lead) the social transistion of a child actually contribute to the 94% likelihood that the child will adopt a trangender path in life? Social transition is the harmless first step of trangender affirming care, it can be as simple as a child changing pronouns and name. This is the starting point - where does this end? The impact of this intervention was reported in Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The article entitled, “Gender Identity 5 Years After Social Transition” was published 13 July 2022. This study started with 319 children, and on average the subjects had already been identifying as transgender for 1.5 years before joining the study. The average age of subjects when they joined the study was 8 years old. The result is simply this: after five years 94% of the children persist and continue to live in their transgender identity. Given their age a large number of the subjects have moved onto medicalization, the use of puberty blocking drugs and then cross sex hormones. The researchers expect the children who have not reached puberty, and continue to identify as transgender, to eventually follow in this medicalization path.

    Mr. Reilly,
Please actually look into the statistical data about C-vid interventions, as you do for other topics. You might find yourself surprised.
IMO, the various datasets - of which there are *tons* - easily meet Bradford Hill criteria for causation of excess death and disability FROM the interventions.
For example: Much ‘died with C-vid’ was false attribution (please see Norman Fenton’s work.) Much ‘died with C-vid’ appears iatrogenic - in other words, caused by medical intervention. Such as obviously dumb and deadly hospital protocols, incentivized by Fed $ - like withholding antibiotics to treat secondary pneumonia, and the Remdesivir protocol.
    • Denis Rancourt’s ‘Non C-vid All Cause Mortality’ data is excellent.
    • Pandata is a high-quality, interdisciplinary resource.
Don't know if you'll see this. Could be helpful to someone, I guess.

I worked in U.S. healthcare for 20 years as an occupational therapist. I usually held 2-3 jobs at once and for this reason, I worked in 10 hospitals across the U.S. at varying times. I did a deep dive into the COVID-19 vaccines examining the vaccine from multiple angles and I would totally advise against it based both on personal and professional experience. There are multiple reasons for this and I realize everyone has made their own decision. There are way more people in healthcare than you think who did not want to take it. But refusing the vax meant financial stress for many so they rolled the dice. I am not vaccinated, but both my mother and brother both had bad reactions. Early treatment is the way to go.

This was a really good discussion. It's very stabilising to have reality/fact-based material presented. How to enter into conversation about this topic is a very important question, since it so often descends into hyperbolic, emotive aggression/defensiveness when the subject to gender is raised.

A minority may be but the furry community consists mostly of nerds enjoying to cosplay and put great artistic talent into making the costumes. Having accompanied a teen to a furry convention, it was the most respectful, empathic, kid- and spectrum-friendly, non-commercial event I as an older person has ever been to.

If people were asked about how many unarmed people are killed by police in one year and they say "a thousand" when the true answer is more like "10" the explanation for this seems a little more simple and unprofound. The actual stat for people killed by police per year is around a thousand. This was thrown around a lot in the last couple of years and became common knowledge. If you simply add the "unarmed" context into the question it is likely that people will miss that point, or simply conflate the two because of the emotional tenor of the question. It's a bit disingenuous to say that its a societal myth when were talking about the wording of polling questions. What is the actual myth? That police kill too many people? You can't use stats to uncover societal myths because societal myths don't derive from statistics.

    • @aidananstey9848

Not to mention "unarmed" does not mean "not dangerous" and can't be used in extension to say the shooting/death was not legal or justified.

I generally trust his take on things because they align with how I tend to see the world, but I do question some of his blind spots on the right. Like authoritarianism is good in some cases, most notably in the US with how cigarette-smoking was nearly completely snuffed out by laws in the 1990s that everyone said wouldn't work and would be like Prohibition all over again. And most developed countries in the world ban and highly regulate firearms. To pretend that it's "extreme" to limit personal possession of anything is to ignore the success of these bans in other countries, although at this point, I don't think bans would be effective here--although they would have been if they had been introduced in the 1960s, when Ronald Reagan introduced the first gun-control law because he didn't like that the Black Panthers paraded around the California Capitol carrying shotguns.

The broadcast media(including GB news) are bound by law to adhere to impartiality-that's why GB news keeps getting in trouble. Perhaps it would be useful if you are going to complain about Europe importing American gender nonsense, you might want to avoid asking an American to project the US context onto Europe. I think a lot of gay people are interested in the gender debate because there is a high proportion of gay people who are gender non conforming. So the y have had to think about what it means to be a man or woman. So like Stella they have a genuine fear that children/adolescents like them are being harmed. There is also the history of acceptance of drag/transexual/transvests as a part of a wider gay scene (I think to call this a community is an over simplification so I avoid that term). I don't think terms like transing away the gay is particularly helpful (except maybe when trying to expose the lunacy of the current push to ban "conversion" therapy). We risk not paying enough attention to the huge cohort who fall outside this perspective. I think that everyone brings their own experience bias to this debate but I hope we can all learn to make more conscious efforts to see that this debate as so much more than our personal experience. I'm glad this channel is here to help remind us all to do this.

  • @giantspida
    @giantspida 8 месяцев назад

Lol, you talked about furries... I think we have a poor reputation because the weirdest and most extreme aspects of it tend to get pushed into the spotlight, and the individuals that take it too far and turn it into some kind of bizarre lifestyle are the most vocal and visible. Which isn't any different from other subcultures, including the whole gender thing. For most, it's just a fun hobby that more or less serves as an excuse to get together and make friends while enjoying a particular art style. There is of course the sexual component for many furries, but it's not just about that, and far less fetishize fursuits than you'd think. Attraction to the artwork alone is way more common.
The demographics are very interesting though. It's difficult to get completely accurate numbers, but something like 60-70% of furries are homo or bisexual males. As for why... that has perplexed me for years. I have no idea what the connection between male homosexuality and an enjoyment of anthropomorphic animals could possibly be, but it's there. There is also a higher incidence of people on the autism spectrum when compared to the general population. There are lots of folks who work with computers or have other "nerdy" professions which pay well, which gives them enough spare income to commission the artists and fursuit makers to create content for the community to enjoy. Maybe someone out there will eventually unravel the mysteries of why the furry fandom is the way it is.

I dont know if he really understands the trans issue or transsexualism in general. It seems he has a grip on extremism but it sounds like (he didnt say this) but it sounds like he thinks transexuals or gender dysphoria is not a real thing? I can't tell. I think its important to address the problem of childhood transition and detransition also. Perhaps that is the point of his talk? It seemed like he shrugged off trans people as a whole as crazy or mislead. I couldnt really tell what his point was or what his perspective was. I agree there will be a detrans wave and people have been medicalized too early and some too young. Perhaps that was all there was to get out of this. I think it would have been nice to hear recognition that real trans people do exist, and in some ways the fast moving trans train is hurting us, but that is not his responsibility to mention that even if he thinks that. Thats just my concern. Thanks for the episode! 💜

    • @robertmarshall2502
      @robertmarshall2502 9 месяцев назад +1

Hi Jen. I think I agree that he didn't give me the impression that he acknowledged or respected gender identity. I'm less sure about gender dysphoria. As you say we weren't given a clear enough picture to say so exactly. He certainly understands that at least some section of trans ppl are autogynephiles and/or driven by sexual impulses but not sure how common he thinks that is. I don't really think we got any clue for the female trans identifying side for example.
I think there was some value in showing how ppl can assume/misunderstand stats, authoritarianism in the left not simply on the right and other ideas about politics. Misrepresentation of "hate crimes" around race for example.
But I agree it was difficult for me to discern the connection to trans or the overall takeaway.

I am concerned about a trend I've seen in podcasts and twitter accounts devoted to the issue of gender straying onto the topic of race/discrimination. I think you risk having people dismiss the program because they disagree with viewpoints shared about race/discrimination. Why get into an outside divisive topic?
I wondered if Professor Reilly was being a little cute when he talked about the number of "unarmed black men shot by police." Off the top of my head I can think of several black men killed unjustly by police who would not fit that description. For example, George Floyd was an unarmed black man, but he was not shot by police. He was suffocated. Philando Castile was armed, but never drew his weapon and was not arguing with or resisting the police who stopped him. Neither would be included in a count of unarmed black men shot by police. There is also all kinds of harrassment that falls far short of a shooting but is definitely discriminatory.
Despite my comments here, I very much appreciate your program.

gender is the expression of biology. gender roles can be social. the role playing , (now carrying out a role can be elaborated on by society), but females are designed by nature to bear and care . while males are designed to fk and fight. women give birth , and that entire process informs the behavior and role in society. while males bigger , faster etc etc come to understand the effective use of violence, as they can do it more effectively than females. out of these realities comes gender and gender roles mostly.

To a degree yes. Most people male or otherwise are not inherently violent. Even animals are born with bite inhibition.
In circumstances where men need to fight they are built for it. Because we now live in a modern world, particularly the middle classes men are no longer needed for strength based work, ie the heavy lifting in farming or hunting, they are now office worker like women. The social roles as they were are blurred because of socialisation.
When it comes to violence it is easier to incite men to it and a small number of men have inherent violence and a smaller number women would too.
Women while we do have a biology built for giving birth and "caring" women are not necessarily more caring than men depending on their socialisation, they would be more aware than men and more on top of the social situation than men and this has been interpreted as "caring".
Biology is a factor but not a be all and end all. We can neither deny it nor hold it responsible for every aspect of sex and gender

@@RenegadeContext biology is destiny. Male violence against women and children would argue otherwise. A modern world has not changed that. Nor has the male trans with their attempt to assert domination through violence and intimidation in this modern world than. It comes down to the biology. The fact males are designed to carry out violence to a greater more successful extent means they will, presented with the opportunity. The fact women through brain chemicals and biology bear and care means they will be less likely to expose themselves to violence when mothers and seek to care for offspring. Histories graveyards are filled with men who died in war as fighters, not so much women, who fill graveyards as mothers. Humans are domesticated to a degree ...yes. but what makes us beasts is still the basis of what we are. As to not needing the strength ... the need to assert dominance , defense of property and territory , revenge and punishment of transgressors etc are hot wired, and never can be removed. These are the birthrite of living creatures, thus ours also. So as to inhibition why use biting when one has fists and guns. All it takes is a inciting incident for the savage to awaken. We are what nature made us to be.

Isn't it strange that telling the truth is now labelled "right wing".
He regards himself as "centre left", that's good enough for me.

Yes, I agree - and not just black supporters/listeners. If you are concerned about how gender has become part of a package for many people who are (rightly) committed to social justice and/or equality, diversity and inclusion, please don't reinforce this by bringing on commentators who ridicule real concerns and experiences of discrimination, racism etc. What is needed here are thoughtful, nuanced, wise conversations, not ones that further feed polarisation or go for cheap laughs..
