- The tegu came in yesterday so here's the setup and unboxing video. I will be posting more videos soon. This little guy is less inclined to burrow, far more active and anxious to eat than the previous tegu so it will make for decent footage.

i know you didnt mean an extra animal specifically as the throw in item when you gave the example.. but the reason i think its not a good idea to include extra animals is because not everyone has room or time for more than one animal.. i think it might cause problems with some people to give them extra animals to care for.. although it would be awesome for people who would appreciate getting an extra animal!

Aww that's really considerate and cool of you. I wish more reptile keepers had that mentality. They are amazing lizards. Intelligence wise these are probably one of the smartest you'll ever come across. I can't wait untill mine reaches a size where he/she can come outside with me on my shoulder.
No problem at all. I searched Reptile, Reptile Tank, Reptile Enclosure, Custom Reptile enclosure, wood reptile enclosure/tank you can try those to start.
I had two tegus at a time but the first tegu went to someone else. The enclosures I bought off of craigslist but I used to build them you can check online there are plenty of tutorials on how to make them. It was about $120 Thanks for all of the love!

No I'm actually in the process of building a bigger one. Some say that a 6x3x3 is the bare minimum for a single adult male though bigger is always better. I'd try an 8x3x2 if possible but I think it depends on how much time the tegu will be spending in the enclosure. Some people let them roam the room all day so I think in that case it doesn't need to be incredibly large.

I handled my beardie every day when it was a baby for a few hours.
If you bring up your bearded dragon with a lot of handling, it should want to come out of its vivarium. But it does depend on the dragons temperament.
to my knowledge, argentine black and white tegus are born greener than black/white. Some Tegus come from different areas of South America (Chacoans, Colombians, Paraguayan etc) so they can differ in appearance as well as other characteristics.
Lol I've seen these silly tegu vids as well and yes they can be clicker/target trained. I believe most larger reptiles (and maybe even smaller ones) can be trained. Like Toothless, she is trained to come out of the enclosure when she sees me bow over. I'm slowly generalizing that to just putting my hand on the outside. Tegus in my opinion are easy for a devoted caregiver it's just spaciously challenging.

It kind of became natural after keeping her on my shoulder since she was a decent size and I knew she wouldn't jump. After being on my shirt/shoulder/arm enough she started to recognize it as a safe place to perch so when I start to put my shoulder there, she climbs up. Could be that she know she'll be getting sunlight as well :]
I was thinking about it. Possibly a Jungle Carpet but honestly I've always liked Rosy Boas and Corns

It's cool I'm not mad. Thanks for explaining. It's 4x2x2 so it'll be good for maybe a year or more then i'lll build a bigger one. He only has that one black hide and an underground coconut hide but the stones serve as hides too because he burrows under them.
Hay repideic! First off i would like to acknowledge you impressive bag opening skills. No im kidding :). This is the first video i have seen of yours and i knew i would be subscribing by 2:09. Could i request a tegu care video from you? Mind you, i am not an idiot, i have done my research but it always help to see how it's REALLY done before attempting it myself. You seem to have such a passion for reptiles.

Hey bro another good substrate to add to hold a burrow is yeah the mulch you have and the eco earth but also a bag of top soil dirt.. all 3 make the perfect substrate, i use it for my monitor and he has a perfect burrow, doesnt collapse or anything..

The inclosur is really big for a baby tegu also it can potentially drown in the water bowl

Tagus are awesome. They're as smart as cats. I had a couple of Colombians, brothers from two different clutches. I dumped some king worms into the sawdust once, disappointed when they didn't do anything. A month later I noticed the older one, Nidhoggr, poking his head into the sawdust, he then preceded to go on a meal worm massacre for the next half hour. I guess they matured and got bitey. Pissed him off.

+Colin Lorbach I had a cat who figured out how to disassemble the spray bottle I used to keep him off the kitchen counter, lined each bit up more or less in order from largest to smallest in front of the door, waited for me to get home and presented it to me.
Although Brootus is a bit on the gifted side compared to other cats, I think.
+Colin Lorbach And it really depends what breed of dog, some have stupid inbred into them. Mutts and especially dogs with coyote or wolf in their bloodline are often pretty damn smart.

@Repidemic How big was your aquarium for the baby tegu? I want one, but wanna know how big the cage is before buying the baby. I know they get big. I have two Savannah monitors both 3ft long. Just trying to do research on it.
they need about the same size as the savannah they are pretty similar the tegu usually gets longer but savs are usually heavier

cypress is fine but you want to make sure you soak it in hot water to kill any parasites. I got it from lllreptile

I've seen & read that they can be trained & are as smart as a dog (considering the dog of course). I seen a vid of a grown tegu rubbing his face into his eggs, he seemed to just being silly. I loved it. I heard they can be trained with a clicker to. I just need to not be so ocd like I am with the dragons, where in I hand feed. But that's my fault, they are more stubborn & lazy then I am. Dragons became a very crash course on becoming a reptile slave. If I can do this a tegu should be easy. Lol

The males can get up to 4 feet and females max out around 3-3.5
do at least 8 x 3 x3 because its gonna need at least 2 feet of mulch to dig in, and 3 feet of width to turn around and feel comfortable! But J worlds is an awesome choice dude!! :)

I used a 100W powersun bulb in the 4x2x2
i would recommend a bearded dragon for a first lizard but i could see the right person who's willing to do insane amounts of research getting a tegu for their first lizard. Research before making a decision and make sure you have the time/space/ money/patience

Oh an I forgot too ask what wat do you need to heat a 8 foot tank is it just 100 wat or what.
Sorry so late. If your tegu is younger its probably not as likely to eat fruit yet but still offer fruit. Try different kinds of fruits but from what ive read keep away from avocado. I'd say mix some raw meat into a ball with fruit in it so he has to eat it.
