  • I just felt like posting a late-night video of how I work with Baby Tegu at the moment. I mentioned a water method which I'll show in the next video most likely; it isn't cruel though it may sound that way trust me it really isn't. He spends time in the water bowl anyway. Other times off camera I would slide a finger under his snout and let him rest on it. In this video I was scooping him and then throwing the rest of my hand under him. There are different ways to handle obviously but you NEVER WANT TO FORCEFULLY GRAB THEM, SQUEEZE THEM, YANK THEM ETC. If you're having to force your tegu/lizard to stay in place then you should probably take it a few steps back and let it get used to your hand and your presence in the enclosure.

Really wonderful video. It's amazing how much he he learned to trust you in just 3 days. It is already evident that you two will be getting along jussstttt fine for his 15+ years on this planet. Beautiful reptile, thanks for sharing!!

Taming lizards are so rewarding! My Caiman lizard acted aggressive and flighty the first few weeks. 7 weeks later he is hand feeding and hisses once or twice when handling.

even that has stopped by now. He's pretty much fully tamed.

Yeah they tail whip from time to time. Some seem to dislike having their tails touched especially at the base of the tail while they're basking or burrowed. The tail whipping will go away once the tegu gets used to the owner. I think in rare cases you come across reptiles that are just aggressive and require way more work.

This tegu came from LLLreptile a few days ago and they were going for 159. They had a 25 dollar shipping and 10% discount so I got it for 170 total and shipped. I heard a lot of good things about him but honestly each time I contacted him he was either out of tegus or he was being sort of short with me (just my experience).

Because he can take it... Because he's the tegu Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. Sorry, Batman moment. Just happened to be handling late that day

I've got a older. Just got him. 'Tame' tegu... This lil dude hates us. When he's picked up huffs and puffs opens him mouth lots of tail movement. How do I handle him? Not mine, my husbands. Just looking for extra tips.

The thing with tegus is that when you first get them they can be a little scared. They don't actually want to hurt you but they don't necessarily trust you yet. Try moving your hand slowly towards his/her face even when he/she opens mouth because if you keep backing up he/she will know that you guys won't pick him/her up if he/she does that. Don't be scared of the tail whips because he/she just wants to be loved and once you gain the trust it will be one of the most rewarding things ever!

Do as the guy above me said war jeans and a hoodie so you dont have to worry of tail wips or claws being as painful. Dont show fear. If you back up he learns that being aggrisve keep people away.

Well the Tegu is NOT aggressive really. A better term would be defensive.

You shouldn't be handling him if he is only there tree days. No wonder he is afraid. He should at least have a week to settle in to his new home.
