Amazing that people don't know this. But thanks for getting it out there. EM Damage good, Auto Turrets bad when it comes to boarding ships. I'm flying an off the shelf Narwal, simply switched out the Auto Turrets for EM weapons, boarding anything is not an issue. I won't even touch ship builder until I can save my creations, especially as I'm just about ready for NG+
Quick tip, not sure if everyone knows it but it took me a bit to notice... when you're routing power quickly and trying to max out a weapon or shields for example, just hold the button down and it'll fill all the way, or as far as it can with what power is available. Works the same to completely empty it
There is one more tip you missed out, after taking over a ship, you can auto pilot the ship you have taken over back to port without you needing to fly back to port, just switch home ship to your boarded ship, and then redock to your original ship and switch home ships back to your original ship, the stolen ship will then self pilot back to port.
Thank you so much for this comment. I had taken over a ship but the engines were dead and I was trying to figure out how to get it home. This actually worked!!! 🎉😊
How to do this exactly? As far as I know i need to be in the ship I've taken over to make it my home ship via menu. But as soon as I do this, my original ship instantly undocks and autopilots to to port without any option to reboard it and make it my homeship again...
@@Benneification There are 3 ways, 1st is when they undock, quickly retarget your original ship and redock with it, board, sit in the captains chair and set the home ship back 2nd undock and target your original ship 1st before changing the captured ship to your home ship thenafter you change the home ship, you can easily redock to your original ship. 3rd undock with your original ship and redock with it before changing home ships. For some reason after you do that, when you switch home ships, they do not undock after that. Then you can just board back your original ship and set the home ship back Hope that helps
Also doing this allows you to overfill a ships hold so you can carry all your resources in the cargo hold without having to leave them laying all over the ship.
I didn't realize what those electromagnetic weapons could do since you have explained it so well I'm going to start up Starfield right now and equip some on my ship, so thank you for that I very much appreciate the advice.
@@04AMofficial In fact since I equipped these electromagnetic weapons to my ship I have found it to be much more combat effective. It must be frustrating for the pirates and raiders when I shut all their weapons down and just shoot the c*** out of them lol!
Two things I don't think I've seen on any video. I was having problem docking, press e on PC. When close. Second hold space bar down and use direction buttons to use thrusters. That was game changer for me piloting
A Coachman with Hornets Nest is perfect for clearing ships as the crew tend to be in groups of 2 or 3. Jus tkeep a reasonable distance to avoid roasting yourself, but it's especially effective when clearing out the cockpit as in most cases there will be 3 people in there on the larger ships.
Thank you for this guide. It has everything I needed to find out. Great job, 04AM! I've watched a number of videos about how to bord ships, and they have all said to take out the shields first and then the engines, and after doing that you should be able to board. But I have never been able to board. It doesn't matter how high or low my difficulty setting is, it always ends with either my ship being blown to pieces, or the ship I wanted to board being blown up. Now I understand what the problem is, more than anything else I've done wrong: Use EM weapons. I never did that, but now I'm going to. 😊
Thanks so much...this answers a lot of questions and resolves a lot of issues I've had. I appreciate the effort you put into the video. Love the channel name...I remember my 04 gamming days...long behind me now though. I'm still a fan of zero dark thirty though. Subscribed.
You don’t need the EM weapon. You also don’t need to target weapons. You just have to disable engine and reach 500m from the ship. You’re ready to dock.
@@pedrovaladao. a true issue. However: if ships are exploding too fast- try to use a single weapon at a time, and attempt to board the highest level ships. I’m lvl 95 now. If you want to steal the ship easily and quickly, then do this: when you are docked and have eliminated everyone, sit in the captain's chair. Then go to the menu and make that ship your home ship, also register it-this is cheaper in space than when you do it at a vendor. Once you have done that, exit the menu and DON'T undock, but BOARD your old ship. Then go to your old ship's captain chair, go to the menu, and make it your home ship again. You're done! Not many folks know you can de-power something quickly by just holding the arrow/D-pad down for a full second instead of taking the power away one bar at a time. @@SimmerCK
@@JemearlSmith , yeah, that's a new one for me for sure. I was dying too fast in fights and raced to get turrets. Now THEY are dying too fast and I often don't get to board either because my turrets softened everyone up too much or my manual weapons (missiles / guns) do too much damage in one volley. I think I may just see if there's a turret that is more of a suppressor (leave everything around me disabled) and adjust my manual weapons so that I can better disable / destroy depending on which I fire.
I have my cannons on the top / rear (mostly facing back) of my ship (not the sides), so if I keep my belly / front to the ship I'm aiming at, then they won't hit it.
the ship you get from completing the FSR quest line is VERY effective at this. It's a Class A and crews 5. HUGE cargo.
I find using vanguard particle beam as the primary weapon and then using a power swap for when their shields are out for maximum power for the EM guns. I make sure that it takes 12 units of power worth of particle guns (6 in total) and 12 units of power for the EM guns (4 in total "barring no skills in ship upgrades"). I don't even use the targeting and once the shields are gone it's free range to rapidly disable and swiftly dock. Earlier levels I found myself having to eject the contraband into space until I discovered I can store it at a bass until I learned how to have shielded cargo. Anyway, there's a lot of fun ways to do it however disabling without using EM is what the targeted systems are for.

Also. I seem to run our of amo alot during missions or in caves , or any where ,,, so how do I find the right ammo box. For my guns. As I never know what I should look for. ??????
You don't NEED target locking as I discovered in my first play through when the story mission wanted me to disable a ships engines and I didn't have target locking skill, but if you don't have it you need to DESELECT The target or else your shots will always go to center of mass. With the target deselected they go where the circle is and you can manually target anything you want.
The problem is, on higher difficulties the ships will blow up before the engines or other parts you want to take down first, so target lock is quite essential. Especially if you want to make it a safe board - to disable weapons as well
Yoo thank you!! I actually didn't know this before this comment and because of you I now am docking all these enemies ships without the perk. Hell yeah
Thats because its part of the mission, as you prgress and ships get tougher you WILL NEED target lock to be able to disable engines/weapons otherwise you will end up destroying the ship nearly every time
is there a way to prevent my energy setting going totally bogus while in "aiming - mode" ? my presets allways go to max gravdrive energy 0 shield 1 per weapon type with ~10 unallocated during aimmode...
One time I disabled the pirate ship, docked and everyone in that spaceship were dead. I board ships all the time without the targeting skill unlocked. I'm on my first play-through level 30 and board ships all the time. Still haven't unlocked targeting. I just get em to near death and ram right into em and hit the board button really quickly.
Only works if you get the engine down, which usually exclusively works with that method on lower difficulties - Hard difficulty will destroy ships way before you can board them if not using the targeting skill
@@pauwwauw6330 Quick answer: It's not worth it. Paying off the bounties will always cost you more than you could ever make farming Contraband or selling ships after you pay the registration fees. It is part of the game design to discourage piracy unless you are intent on being a jerk just for shits and giggles.
Very soon - do your Main missions until you get this UC quest where you have to 'infiltrate' the Crimson Fleet (red skull icon). You will very soon get access to Shielded Cargo to smuggle contraband and unlock skills like targeting systems to make boarding easy mode!
Don't need Targeting Control Systems skill at all. Blast enem6 ship with lasers until shields are down, the use your EM weapon to disable the ship. No need to target specific areas.
I'm playing on a PC and when I have the problem with the right and left in the target selection, then I press the left alt key and right or left and that works. I don`t know how it works on controlers. Also in order to board, you just need to get within 500 meters, and you only need to disable the shields and engines.
I was kinda hesitant getting em weapons on my ship incase I’m in a big battle and I’m just shooting electromagnetic waves at everyone trying to win😂, I think I’ll keep my razor leaf as a fighting ship and my starter ship as a piracy ship so I can get a better ship
I am very new to the game, like 10 hours in. Is there a specific vendor I would go to in order to sell captured ships or some way to part them out to keep good pieces I would want to put on mine?
just yesterday i had a quite big enemy ship that i just couldnt dock to. disabled the engines mutliple times, was always close enough but the game just wouldnt give me the docking prompt.
The advice to remap them is to put them closer to your left hand so you don't have to move far to quicksave/quickload. I personally have not remapped them but may one day if I find I use them in frantic situations.
I keep blowing everything up ships guns are crazy strong have rhe nova weapon mount on the front with 2 nutron turrets and 4 vanguard hellfires and 4 em guns on wings two turrents on back
If you register the ship fron your pause menu its cheaper than doing it at a star port. Just set it as your hone ship and on controller it would be the "share" button or back button or select or whatever y'all call it lol
Boarding is effed up for me at present. Ships on the ground don’t drop the ramp and in space ships are empty in space so you never get the prompt to take over the ship. There are a bunch of us on Reddit who have the problem. So yeah… no ship taking for me until the game is finished. It’s also broken Sarah’s and Sam’s missions as you cannot do what they tell you to do as no enemies spawn… but the weird thing is you can board the Starborn ships… except they are crap. So yeah… if ships land and don’t open up… you are screwed like us.
Boarding some va’ruun ships with the big cargo hold is fun - once you take out the turrets you can catch them coming down the ladder one at a time , sorry about that guys
Stealing ships in space is very easy can see why they made it not so profitable would be game breaking. Game already easy is enough on normal skill level.
200h of gametime and all it needs to board is to just disable the engine and you can board fast and easy. No need to go through all systems...... Even with grav untouch, with no engine the ship will not go anywhere. Engines OFF > Board > Leave > Sell back to them, THATS IT.
nice worst thing i did was steal aship that could not jump to sell, then I landed on planets to steal a new ship, but all that kept landing was starborn ships.....
Thats the fastest way indeed, while in harder difficulties you might get destroyed before you get in Docking range, so thats why I recommend taking down weapon systems from afar first!
@04AMofficial yes I have problem too. I have ship with emp weapon. Because I'm so use to just destroying the ships. I think very hard is not made for game. Auto turrets off. Emp on.
You make boarding look so complicated when it's not..... just target the engines from the get go and use lasers and ballistic weapons to take shield down and then engines...... all you need to do is have the ship selected and be close enough to board once engines are out. Simple
no you have to deselect the ship, else most of the time the ship will get destroyed because if you have the ship selected all your shots automatically goes to the hull, doesn't matter which part of the ship you're targeting
Cool video but 90% of that is completely unnecessary btw. Much easier to make sure you just leave the ship you want, alive until the end of the dogfight, smoke it’s engines, boost fast af at it until you get 500m and then hit dock! It literally takes 1/10th of the time and effort of disabling all systems. Plus when you steal it, all the weapons and grav drive are jacked up! I guess if your doing a super serious, realistic run then it would probably make sense to disable the weapons first, I guess. Ship jacking is one of my favorite things in this game, brilliant move by the devs imo.
Try Hard and Very Hard. You'll have a much harder time capturing ships ^^ thats why taking out weapons is recommended before you fly in that 500m boarding range as you might get blasted to pieces when you do. This is for a safe guarantee boarding strategy to secure what you want, not to take unneccessary risks to die or blow up the enemy craft to lose your shots
Damn I just beat a fleet of 4 level 24 ships and I'm only level 16. I managed to board the last one and kill the crew. When I went to claim my new ship it told me I have to upgrade my piloting skill! 😭
Yeah unless your bugged (along with 30% of the users) where basically you can board and there is NOTHING on board. No mobs, no contraband. Cant get in ships that are landed either. They need ot fix this crap.
True, but try doing that on certain ships, they kill you before that happens so THEN its recommended to first take out their guns, then the engine safely
@@04AMofficial Well I couldn't finsd a way to do that. But I sorted it. I went to a Ship Technician and chose Upgrade. This brings up a menu with your current weapons at W0, W1, and W2. Selecting one of these brings up a list of weapons available and happily the Spark Suppressor was one of them. Very easily done. This was at Jasmine Durano at the Key mentioned by you. Don't know if every Ship Technician offers it. I imagine they will. I need to level up to get the Targeting skill you mentioned and then I'll have a go at the rest of your video. Excellent video. i love how when you joined the Crimson fleet nobody is hostile when you board. only downside is that i have a 100k+ bounty with them now
Those are rookie numbers, I have 350K now, I dont dare going back to the Key now xD
@@04AMofficial i'm just wondering if the bounty was worth the amount of money i'll be making off contaband
Good day excellent video.. question i got this game to be a hansolo ,Pirate how soon or what level can I start piracy ?
I just got to New atlantis at level five
Very soon - do your Main missions until you get this UC quest where you have to 'infiltrate' the Crimson Fleet (red skull icon).
You will very soon get access to Shielded Cargo to smuggle contraband and unlock skills like targeting systems to make boarding easy mode!
How are you doing the target lock and viewing the systems?
You need one skill point in the Tech skill "Targeting control systems"
Don't need Targeting Control Systems skill at all. Blast enem6 ship with lasers until shields are down, the use your EM weapon to disable the ship. No need to target specific areas.
Thanks
even i , the mantis ,who has ships aplenty found it interesting
My W3 is EM. I use 1&2 until shields are down and then only 3. No targeting skill strictly necessary.
Love this game
just yesterday i had a quite big enemy ship that i just couldnt dock to. disabled the engines mutliple times, was always close enough but the game just wouldnt give me the docking prompt.
You didn't show us how to target specific areas. What keys target what systems?
That enemy ai is *chefs kiss*
I am allied with the Crimson Fleet, so they are friendly, makes it easy to position for takeover and fire up 🤓
On Xbox I had to press B to deselect the actual ship so I could manually shoot the engines. Someone said A here but it didnt work for me
Can I visit the Key after the legacy mission ?
remap quicksave and quickload to F1 and F3? they're already F5 and F9
The advice to remap them is to put them closer to your left hand so you don't have to move far to quicksave/quickload. I personally have not remapped them but may one day if I find I use them in frantic situations.
I got invited to board a ship by some couple celebrating their anniversary 😅
Yoink.
May I ask where you got that Crimson Fleet outfit? Is it a reward for completing the Crimson Fleet quest line
Its a random drop when to kill a Crimson fleet captain
I keep blowing everything up ships guns are crazy strong have rhe nova weapon mount on the front with 2 nutron turrets and 4 vanguard hellfires and 4 em guns on wings two turrents on back
Awesome bro, used this strategy and stole my first ship, I'm a bad man 😂
It's a shame that the ships don't have a power plant that can shut down all the ship's systems, as in the Elite.
This was precisely what I was looking .. because I was always destroying everything ;( was so frustrating hehehe lol .. but now I know .. thanks a lot
I had the same problem earlier, thats why I made the guide :D Happy I was able to help!
what keys cycle through the subsystens on xbox?
Use the D-pad!
If you register the ship fron your pause menu its cheaper than doing it at a star port. Just set it as your hone ship and on controller it would be the "share" button or back button or select or whatever y'all call it lol
Is there a way to do this and not have your primary ship start flying away?
For me crimson fleet bounties are astronomical.
The simplest way to level piloting is to run the vanguard simulation repeatedly until you max out. Free xp and no damage to your actual ship
10 XP/ship destroyed isn't something worth mentioning.
I keep destroying the ships having a hard time stealing them
nice worst thing i did was steal aship that could not jump to sell, then I landed on planets to steal a new ship, but all that kept landing was starborn ships.....
First i disabile the engine dock always shows up. No problem
Emp on.
And the legendary ship??
Hey I really love the design of your ship! Can you post a vid showing how to build it?
He already did, check up in his into comments!
I have more fun. Blowing the ships to kingdom come , complete with crew on board. ,,,,body parts go EVERYYYYY WHEREEEEEE
I have some auto-turrets on my ship, and they destroy the other ship completely before I can perform this task.
I was doing it correctly, actually. I assume most players were, too.
Ok so it is a little wonky. I thought for sure I was doing everything right but couldn’t get a dock prompt.
You need to be under 500m distance, from that ship, in order to get that docking prompt!
You don't actually clearly explain how to disable a ship without risking to disable it. That part was done poorly
Lasers work fine on the bigger ships, its like performing brain surgery with a sledge hammer, but it works.
I have a guide for that too :D to get Piloting 4 in no time hehe
I'm pretty sure you can use the Ship Combat Simulator at UC to clear the prerequisites for piloting skill upgrades.
Can't do boarding at all anymore, for landed ships anyway. And Bethesda won't even acknowledge this game-breaking bug.
I have so much contraband I just throw them in a big old pile
Yeah unless your bugged (along with 30% of the users) where basically you can board and there is NOTHING on board. No mobs, no contraband. Cant get in ships that are landed either. They need ot fix this crap.
The Registration fee is bullsh-t. It makes ship stealing worthless, so you have to loot the ship first to make any real profit from selling it.
You don't have to disable their weapons. Disabling the engines is enough to be able to dock
True, but try doing that on certain ships, they kill you before that happens so THEN its recommended to first take out their guns, then the engine safely
@@04AMofficial Fair point
You don't desscribe how to mount the suppressor weapons you bought. Useless to me without that info.
Bruh, just attach them to your spaceship? XD
Thanks so much.
Don't really have an issue boarding ships using just pulse lasers and autocannons. The only time I lose it is if an ally blows them up first.
On lower difficulty boarding is extremely easy. Its practically impossible to board without EM on Hard and Very Hard
@@04AMofficial Ah, that makes sense. I actually have no idea what my difficulty is at, so probably not hard or very hard.
you can board as soon as their engines are disabled and you are within 500m
I have a bounty of 100K on me from the Crimson Fleet.
