Yeah, I was reading the comments to see if anyone mentioned the sound track. I think it's the best movie soundtrack of all time, The music in The Lost Boys was one of the best things about the movie. I played that cassette and then the CD so many times.

I always wondered if the Grandpa was a true vampire hunter and that’s why you never saw him that much. The way the movie ends always made you think that he knew wayyyy more than anyone else.

I always thought he was a werewolf. It would explain his knowledge and hatred of the vampires, and all his taxidermy since he would probably hunt animals to keep from killing humans (and possibly getting the attention of the vampires)
I think a couple things are missed in this. Maria came across as what is usually referred to as a Familiar, which can be several things all at once such as a "wannabe" to a sort of servant that isn't a vampire but kept in a middle state indefinitely as long as they serve their master or mistress. They probably were considering making her something like a werewolf but chose not to go down that road. The Grandpa Character I have always thought of as a retired vampire hunter that played off the assumption of others that he was simply a loopy old man with some form of dementia as a cover, especially with all his activities that became more clarified when he was turning the fences upside down with the spikes upward, and more so since at the end, he is less loopy and more serious with his comments. The fascination with stuffing animals may have been a hint he worked in a funeral home at some point which would tie in and explain how he knew about the vampire problem originally with all the embalming and whatnot. Being old he was simply trying to figure out how to save his family and when the opportunity came to kill the boss vampire he took it because there really wasn't much else he could do otherwise.
I like the point you made about Maria possibly being a Familiar. During the video I was wondering if she was maybe supposed to be some type of "Tinker Bell", and I think that works really well.
Maria being a werewolf would have been solid. With her working for Max would make sense, maybe she wanted to be close to him so she could take him out. But depending on the vampires in the lost boys universe, with Max being a master vampire, he should be able to smell a werewolfs scent.

While I love The Goonies as a film I'm glad The Lost Boys went on a darker yet still comedic at times route, much more fitting!

As a kid, this movie fascinated me and scared the crap out of me at the same time 😂 But it's also the movie that got me into vampires! I love this movie so much that I named my sons Michael and Sam. I didn't tell them that I named them after this movie until they were 11 and 13 years old! They were just grateful I didn't name them Louis and Lestat 😂

The Lost Girls sequel that they were trying to get made would of explored Max a bit more. I guess the rough draft had a group of teenage girl vampires returning to Santa Carla after Max's death. They apparently were Max's first children but he found them to hard to control and told them leave. He then started over with teen boys. Overtime he had trouble keeping them in line even though they feared him they still acted out. His epiphany came when he realized that a mother figure is what he had been missing for his children.

Takes me back, we all LOVED this movie when it came out, everyone was talking about how good it was ... the feeling that it was gonna be a light romp that then turned far darker and scarier was truly well done!!! And of course we all LOVED the soundtrack too and quite played it to death after!!
It was definitely a great time for movies. Just one amazing new movie after another. And how great it felt to finally see us, the new generation, getting our own stories & characters.
Fun fact: Neverland is basically the afterlife. The story came about because the author's brother died when he was very young ... to cope with it, he imagined the brother living in a place where he stayed a child forever.
There are several horror novels exploring the idea of Peter Pan being either a vampire or a creepy stalker. I only remember the title of one of them - "Straight On Till Morning" by Christopher Golden.
@@derkeheath5172 When you think about it thought, Peter Pan wasn't always a good guy: he essentially kidnapped kids, (yes they fell out of their carriages but he could have brought them to their parents) treated Wendy like a mom/servant, and was a bit of bully to the other boys at times and always provoked captain hook.
I don’t know how I missed this movie while growing up in the 80s. It wasn’t until I began dating my now wife in the 2000s that I discovered Lost Boys on VHS in her video library. When I said, “I’ve never heard of this one.” Her reaction was as if I was a very deprived child. Anyway, we watched it immediately and I loved it.
In the novelization of The Lost Boys, it has tons of stuff that was not in the movie. If you read the novelization and then watch the movie again, it really makes the movie even better! The Lost Boys is in my top 5 all time favorite movies.
MORE FUN FACT: At first I though you were confusing her with Rae Dawn Chong, and I was giggling about how that seemed racist. But she was a student. And I remember loving that movie, and wanting Jim Belushi to come kick some ass at my shithole, violence riddled school.

I saw this one in the theater when I was 11 and I loved it! When it came out on video though, I swore there were two scenes that were missing that I saw in the theater. I don't remember what they were anymore since 1987 was a looong time ago now, but it's driven me nuts all this time.That scene with Maria looking at Lucy talking to Max bugged me so much for so long. I'm glad to know she was supposed to be a character, because I used to think she was just a terrible extra that couldn't keep from looking at Dianne Wiest during filming. Salt on the feet is from vampire lore as a way to tell if someone is a vampire. Speaking of vampire lore, I am pretty sure Lucy Emerson is named after Lucy from the novel Dracula.
I got to meet Alex Winters at a comic con. I meant to tell him how it always annoyed me he was the first one to get staked in TLB, but I ended up talking Bill and Ted and forgot. Very cool guy... Excellent even, one might say.
This is probably my fav movie of all time as a GenXer! This and The Crow reminds me of how fortunate I am to have grown up in the last two totally epic eras of music and movie genres.
Minty, remember all vampires have a servant that they use to take care of their needs. Most likely the character of Maria was a servant to Max which would make her immortal much like a living dead. This makes sense, she takes care of his business fronts during the day since he cannot be out in the sunlight. (Plus, this Maria character was out during the day, so she could not be a vampire.) Also, she marks victims for him and his evil horde and targets people they want to recruit into their collective group. For instance, maybe that is how Star and the others discovered Michael and his family. There is no doubt she was a servant to Max, which I think they should have kept her in the script because it added more to the story of how Max controlled that area. I also believe there was a backstory of the grandfather, which was never revealed. I believe he was actually a vampire hunter in his younger years. Remember at the end of the story he makes a comment about the one thing he could not stomach about Santa Clara was all the damn vampires. He put that stake on the hood of his car and charged into Max with it striking him in the heart, thus revealing he knew about the vampire's existence for quite some time. Cool video!!
And the servant, sometimes called a ghoul in some mythos, isn't always a thing in lore. But she could have been half-vampire like Star was, or a toy for Max (like a blood doll in some mythos). I honestly didn't remember her until this video. :)
One thing that helps it, and I'm not sure it's Intentional, but yes it was set in the 80s, but even when it came out it was like a fantasy version of the 80s that was just real enough to work then, but is magical now.
Joel Schumacher had the enviable talent of making anyone in his movies look like a god. Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland never looked that good again.

I don’t know, I kind of feel like this movie captured the remaining childhood fading into adulthood that characterizes the mid to late teenage years perfectly. The way it used vampires as a metaphor for drugs and the dangers of experimenting in sex, and predatory adults preying on young people just kind of worked to make it a classic young adult film. I think it would’ve been forgotten if it had been more like the goonies.
Maria going into the cave that david and them stayed would of been a great post credit scene. The could of even had her look at the camera and have her eyes changed and then show fangs. I think it would of made the crowd go wild, but thats just my opinion.
I appreciate you, Minty! The Lost Boys was the first horror film I watched. Even though I was only 6 years old, my mom figured it was okay because it was her favorite horror movie, and she knew when she should cover my eyes😅
I’m currently rewatching TruBlood and in the middle of the Twilight Saga. In 1987 I was 14. With a love of vampire books and movies and a huge Kiefer fan. I somehow missed the movie. Thank Minty for bringing it back in the light. 🧛♂️

"Going back to school" is a phrase Americans use when someone has started college but stops going, either due to money or time issues. So he was probably in his early to mid 20s and has already finished high school. Also, the salt on his feet is probably a reference to a legend that evil spirits (vampires, witches, etc) can't cross a line of salt so people would put one across the entrance to their homes to keep out evil stuff.
i thought Michael was 17, looking to start senior year that coming fall and Sam was 15. Lucy does tell him when Max comes over "You know things are going to change around here once school starts." if Michael was any older than 17, why would he move with his mom after the divorce? he's 18-20, he could get a job and live on his own. he wouldn't need to move with his mom and brother

I absolutely loved this that much i had the movie, cassette tape n record soundtrack. I had a mad crush on Corey Feldman n still do. The music was legendary. Not really a bad song on it. Star was my favourite hippy name too. Wow. Every weekend or spare moment I would be watching The Lost Boy's.....
Great rundown of the would-be alternate film. I've spent a lot of time in Santa Cruz on the Boardwalk where this movie was filmed, so I have a lot of fondness for it. I recently bought the new 4K remaster of it and it looks and sounds really good and easily is now the best version of the film on home video, so I recommend that fans pick it up on 4K. Anyway, nice clip Minty - keep the good stuff coming. P. S. - When the mom wants Michael to go back to school, she most likely means college - so Michael probably indeed was already a high school graduate. The word "school" is often used generally in the US to convey furthering education even after high school. It was especially big in the 80s for parents to push their kids into university after getting their high school diploma.

Fantastic Minty, Growing up in the 80s, The Lost Boys holds so many special memories for me, so quotable, tons of iconic scenes and what a soundtrack, I still believe!!
Saw this movie with my family when I was little and just loved it, its one of my all time favs. The movie is great as is, but the Maria scene would have been great kept in, and the scene with her and others crawling into the cave wild have been awesome. Hearing that makes me think that Max was using her to build him up with Lucy, and he turned her at the end as a reward. But before hearing This from Minty I always saw the scene with her looking at Lucy on the phone as a "she's hooking up with the boss" laughing type deal. I also remember the Maria actor from New Jack City, The People Under the Stairs, Summer School and A Nightmare on Elm Street The Dream Child.
I was 13 when I saw it in theaters & it blew me away! I think that same weekend I even went out & bought The Lost Boys Music CD. Never thought of Peter Pan being a Vampire, but someone needs to do that movie! Maybe Captain Hook brought the lost & desperate adults to the island on his boat as food for Peter! Still a bad guy, but working with Peter the Vampire!
Video stores were the best. Fri and Saturday nights, going with friends, choosing a video, getting sweets and popcorn. 😢 memories. Tbh I bet if they reopened they would get used.
I miss video stores too. I worked at two in the 80s. Such a fun job for someone who was into movies. I loved this episode Minty. I would watch every single iteration they'd originally planned for this movie. Though I'm glad I didn't see the chomping on the back of the head scene.
I remember that blink and you'll miss it scene with David and the bald guy on the beach. I was watching the movie with my brother and just as it happened he opened a ring pull can of coke. Whenever I see that scene now I see the spray of blood when David bites into the guy's head, I still hear a coke can opening.
He did seem a little old to be just chillin..🤣 I guess I always just put it down to the move from Phoenix they’d recently made & this was just the ‘settling in’ period for the two kids.
I have ALWAYS thought Kiefer Sutherland could play the ULTIMATE mean "asshole " of a character. Whether it be this one in "Lost Boys', or especially playing "ACE" in "Stand by Me" , you always wanted to see that guy he is playing get what is coming to him !!! lol (This was a great movie when I was younger... ;) )
Joel was very open about being a sex fiend, in interviews he boasted about sex with thousands of (men), so he had a massive appetite for sexual tones, look at batman alone, it's littered with heavy gay tones. So it's no wonder that the film became what it did, but I'm glad it did because this film is just damn iconic.

First time commenting. I have been an admirer of this channel for a while. The Lost Boys always struck me as such a tight film in terms of the storyline. Those cut scenes keep it so much more focused. As well as the Peter Pan references thought the 'lost' part refer to the missing people that you see on the milk cartons too. Laddy for example, is literally a lost boy.
The story of Maria is pretty interesting if you then add the comic book official sequel, which involves the returning Lost Girls. That then fits with Maria being potentially a vampire, or even a thrall / ghoul at the time.
I was at a convention in Bakersfield nearly three months ago where the guy who played one of the Frog brothers would have been there, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to meet him because he had to abruptly depart due to some sort of family emergency.
The cast in some ways already knew each other because some have already worked together before such as Jason Patrick and Jami Gertz did a movie about a year earlier called Solarbabies so it was a no brainer to cast both of them again in another movie together. People also wanted to see Corey Haim and Corey Feldman (The 2 Coreys) in a movie together because both were popular in the 80's. The movie would have been too cheesy if the original idea to make it more like Goonies followed through and it wouldn't have done as well as it did so I agree with Joel Schumacher and Jason Patrick using a different approach. Also we can't underscore the fact that the soundtrack was also perfect for this movie so well done on that as well.
This movie was a very strange mix up of kid movie and adult horror. Unlike Monster Squad, Lost Boys didnt have comedic horror. The comedy and horror had a very distinct barrier, which made it feel like two seperate movies. When it was comedy, it leaned hard when it was horror and leaned hard, but they never mixed. This should not have worked, but somehow, it did.
I loved this movie as a kid but was an infant when it was in theaters. I just recently got the chance to see it in a theater and what an incredible experience. Definitely worth watching on the big screen.
All this time later and I'm still not over this is the guy who directed those horrible batman movies. It just goes to show how much we change over time.
Schumaker's early comedies are also vastly different from his later work: Car Wash is definitely worth checking out. The Wiz, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, and DC Cab are less worthwhile, but have their charms. His horror movie "Blood Creek" with Michael Fassbender and Henry Cavill, is also worth checking out.
He also did Falling Down, Flatliners, Tigerland, Phone Booth, A Time to Kill, The Client... All great films... And Batman Forever wasn't even that bad, the studio fucked him on it then he and the studio learned the wrong lessons from its success and applied it to Batman & Robin. The poor bastard died in 2020 with people still associating him with everyone's 2 least favourite Batman movies, and when his name comes up it's because of his misfires and outliers than his great works.
The reason Michael isn't in school is because it's Summer. Remember when Lucy tells them "You know, things are gonna change around this house when school starts."
Maria was definitely a vampire, the first thing that made me know that she was a vampire was the devious way she was looking at Lucy on the phone toward the camera, second, she had a hankerchif around her neck to hide the bite mark's on her neck and third, the young vampire's or the boss head vampire probably made her a vampire the same night she started working for that video store, thanks for the video, I was just out of highschool when this movie came out and also it's good to see footage I never saw of this movie.

Actually, it is briefly implied that Michael was still in high school, and that is was summer vacation. There is a scene where his mother, Lucy, is getting on his case about hm being out all night, and she says to him = Michael, that "things are really going to change around here when school starts." I don't know about where you are from, but here in the US, at least here in my state of California, you can legally drop out of school once you turn 16. So with that, I just assumed Michael's character was maybe 17, getting ready to enter his senior year of high school. Especially in the deleted scene where he is telling his mom about dropping out of school to keep working. In Cali at least, his mother would have had no legal say in that once Michael turned 16.
Geez, I thought I knew everything about this film, but these reveals are incredible. Now I want the uncut remastered version with every scene restored.
I started a new job in high school back in 1989. Once I found out that the Lost Boys soundtrack was one of about 4 that they played on repeat there I was crazy excited, being that LB was my favorite movie. It was my first lesson in too much of a good thing. After 2 about months I was sick of it and hated that it stopped me from wanting to watch the movie anymore.

Salt, while not traditionally known to ward off vampires specifically, is known for having purifying properties that can ward off evil. Meaning it likely came from GRANDPA when Michael was coming and going at night. Grandpa as we all know explains in the end that the problem with Santa Carla is "all the damn vampires" - so he would naturally live in a wooden log cabin house, stuff animals as iconography to keep away spirits and evil, salt the entrances of the home, etc. All suble things to the unsuspecting viewer but to a Vampire or a vampophile its very obvious.
Ahh I miss video stores as well was always an exciting adventure of what you would find or if you got a new release... maybe on reserve one of mine used to be a small arcade so you could hang out for hours especially on a Friday and if you top scored on a game everyone would know
I was friends with the screenwriter Jan Fischer when we studied theater together in college. She was very kind and humble. Her father was actor Victor French, best known from Little House on the Prairie and as Michael Landon’s friend in Highway to Heaven. Jan passed away too young in her early 50s.
Any time I cut grass or mess around in my garden, I listen to the soundtrack of this movie starting with listening to People Are Strange on repeat at least 4 times first...
I actually saw the original version of the Lost Boys in a secret preview in New York City. I really enjoyed that version and it was a lot more like the Goonies and was fun. Then not knowing about the behind the scenes, I was very shocked when the movie hit the theaters and was entirely different and was a creepy horror show.

I like the point you made about Maria possibly being a Familiar. During the video I was wondering if she was maybe supposed to be some type of "Tinker Bell", and I think that works really well.

Maria being a werewolf would have been solid. With her working for Max would make sense, maybe she wanted to be close to him so she could take him out. But depending on the vampires in the lost boys universe, with Max being a master vampire, he should be able to smell a werewolfs scent.

As a kid, this movie fascinated me and scared the crap out of me at the same time 😂 But it's also the movie that got me into vampires! I love this movie so much that I named my sons Michael and Sam. I didn't tell them that I named them after this movie until they were 11 and 13 years old! They were just grateful I didn't name them Louis and Lestat 😂

The Lost Girls sequel that they were trying to get made would of explored Max a bit more. I guess the rough draft had a group of teenage girl vampires returning to Santa Carla after Max's death. They apparently were Max's first children but he found them to hard to control and told them leave. He then started over with teen boys. Overtime he had trouble keeping them in line even though they feared him they still acted out. His epiphany came when he realized that a mother figure is what he had been missing for his children.

The Lost Boys was unique to me because of the beach life aesthetic, which was uncommon in horror films and attractive to me as a teenager.
Takes me back, we all LOVED this movie when it came out, everyone was talking about how good it was ... the feeling that it was gonna be a light romp that then turned far darker and scarier was truly well done!!! And of course we all LOVED the soundtrack too and quite played it to death after!!
It was definitely a great time for movies. Just one amazing new movie after another. And how great it felt to finally see us, the new generation, getting our own stories & characters.

Fun fact: Neverland is basically the afterlife. The story came about because the author's brother died when he was very young ... to cope with it, he imagined the brother living in a place where he stayed a child forever.

There are several horror novels exploring the idea of Peter Pan being either a vampire or a creepy stalker. I only remember the title of one of them - "Straight On Till Morning" by Christopher Golden.

@@derkeheath5172 When you think about it thought, Peter Pan wasn't always a good guy: he essentially kidnapped kids, (yes they fell out of their carriages but he could have brought them to their parents) treated Wendy like a mom/servant, and was a bit of bully to the other boys at times and always provoked captain hook.
I don’t know how I missed this movie while growing up in the 80s. It wasn’t until I began dating my now wife in the 2000s that I discovered Lost Boys on VHS in her video library. When I said, “I’ve never heard of this one.” Her reaction was as if I was a very deprived child. Anyway, we watched it immediately and I loved it.

I saw this one in the theater when I was 11 and I loved it! When it came out on video though, I swore there were two scenes that were missing that I saw in the theater. I don't remember what they were anymore since 1987 was a looong time ago now, but it's driven me nuts all this time.That scene with Maria looking at Lucy talking to Max bugged me so much for so long. I'm glad to know she was supposed to be a character, because I used to think she was just a terrible extra that couldn't keep from looking at Dianne Wiest during filming.

This is probably my fav movie of all time as a GenXer! This and The Crow reminds me of how fortunate I am to have grown up in the last two totally epic eras of music and movie genres.
I'd say Maria KNEW about the vampires and Max. But probably kept human to keep an eye on things during the day with the promise of immortality
Minty, remember all vampires have a servant that they use to take care of their needs. Most likely the character of Maria was a servant to Max which would make her immortal much like a living dead. This makes sense, she takes care of his business fronts during the day since he cannot be out in the sunlight. (Plus, this Maria character was out during the day, so she could not be a vampire.) Also, she marks victims for him and his evil horde and targets people they want to recruit into their collective group. For instance, maybe that is how Star and the others discovered Michael and his family. There is no doubt she was a servant to Max, which I think they should have kept her in the script because it added more to the story of how Max controlled that area. I also believe there was a backstory of the grandfather, which was never revealed. I believe he was actually a vampire hunter in his younger years. Remember at the end of the story he makes a comment about the one thing he could not stomach about Santa Clara was all the damn vampires. He put that stake on the hood of his car and charged into Max with it striking him in the heart, thus revealing he knew about the vampire's existence for quite some time. Cool video!!

And the servant, sometimes called a ghoul in some mythos, isn't always a thing in lore. But she could have been half-vampire like Star was, or a toy for Max (like a blood doll in some mythos). I honestly didn't remember her until this video. :)

It blows my mind how well this movie has aged, especially the outfits of the vampire gang.
One thing that helps it, and I'm not sure it's Intentional, but yes it was set in the 80s, but even when it came out it was like a fantasy version of the 80s that was just real enough to work then, but is magical now.

I don’t know, I kind of feel like this movie captured the remaining childhood fading into adulthood that characterizes the mid to late teenage years perfectly. The way it used vampires as a metaphor for drugs and the dangers of experimenting in sex, and predatory adults preying on young people just kind of worked to make it a classic young adult film. I think it would’ve been forgotten if it had been more like the goonies.

Maria going into the cave that david and them stayed would of been a great post credit scene. The could of even had her look at the camera and have her eyes changed and then show fangs. I think it would of made the crowd go wild, but thats just my opinion.

"Going back to school" is a phrase Americans use when someone has started college but stops going, either due to money or time issues. So he was probably in his early to mid 20s and has already finished high school. Also, the salt on his feet is probably a reference to a legend that evil spirits (vampires, witches, etc) can't cross a line of salt so people would put one across the entrance to their homes to keep out evil stuff.
i thought Michael was 17, looking to start senior year that coming fall and Sam was 15. Lucy does tell him when Max comes over "You know things are going to change around here once school starts." if Michael was any older than 17, why would he move with his mom after the divorce? he's 18-20, he could get a job and live on his own. he wouldn't need to move with his mom and brother

Just watched The Lost Boys and The Goonies DVDs in the last three days. Why am I puzzled as to why I'm a faan of Minty. Love your work.
Great rundown of the would-be alternate film. I've spent a lot of time in Santa Cruz on the Boardwalk where this movie was filmed, so I have a lot of fondness for it. I recently bought the new 4K remaster of it and it looks and sounds really good and easily is now the best version of the film on home video, so I recommend that fans pick it up on 4K.

P. S. - When the mom wants Michael to go back to school, she most likely means college - so Michael probably indeed was already a high school graduate. The word "school" is often used generally in the US to convey furthering education even after high school. It was especially big in the 80s for parents to push their kids into university after getting their high school diploma.

Fantastic Minty, Growing up in the 80s, The Lost Boys holds so many special memories for me, so quotable, tons of iconic scenes and what a soundtrack, I still believe!!
Saw this movie with my family when I was little and just loved it, its one of my all time favs.
The movie is great as is, but the Maria scene would have been great kept in, and the scene with her and others crawling into the cave wild have been awesome. Hearing that makes me think that Max was using her to build him up with Lucy, and he turned her at the end as a reward. But before hearing This from Minty I always saw the scene with her looking at Lucy on the phone as a "she's hooking up with the boss" laughing type deal. I also remember the Maria actor from New Jack City, The People Under the Stairs, Summer School and A Nightmare on Elm Street The Dream Child.
I always felt Lost Boys had a bit of a Goonies vibe, so this totally makes sense. I miss video stores too!
I was 13 when I saw it in theaters & it blew me away! I think that same weekend I even went out & bought The Lost Boys Music CD. Never thought of Peter Pan being a Vampire, but someone needs to do that movie! Maybe Captain Hook brought the lost & desperate adults to the island on his boat as food for Peter! Still a bad guy, but working with Peter the Vampire!

I miss video stores too. I worked at two in the 80s. Such a fun job for someone who was into movies. I loved this episode Minty. I would watch every single iteration they'd originally planned for this movie. Though I'm glad I didn't see the chomping on the back of the head scene.
I remember that blink and you'll miss it scene with David and the bald guy on the beach. I was watching the movie with my brother and just as it happened he opened a ring pull can of coke. Whenever I see that scene now I see the spray of blood when David bites into the guy's head, I still hear a coke can opening.

Joel was very open about being a sex fiend, in interviews he boasted about sex with thousands of (men), so he had a massive appetite for sexual tones, look at batman alone, it's littered with heavy gay tones.
So it's no wonder that the film became what it did, but I'm glad it did because this film is just damn iconic.

First time commenting. I have been an admirer of this channel for a while.
The Lost Boys always struck me as such a tight film in terms of the storyline. Those cut scenes keep it so much more focused.
As well as the Peter Pan references thought the 'lost' part refer to the missing people that you see on the milk cartons too. Laddy for example, is literally a lost boy.
The story of Maria is pretty interesting if you then add the comic book official sequel, which involves the returning Lost Girls. That then fits with Maria being potentially a vampire, or even a thrall / ghoul at the time.

I was at a convention in Bakersfield nearly three months ago where the guy who played one of the Frog brothers would have been there, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to meet him because he had to abruptly depart due to some sort of family emergency.
The cast in some ways already knew each other because some have already worked together before such as Jason Patrick and Jami Gertz did a movie about a year earlier called Solarbabies so it was a no brainer to cast both of them again in another movie together. People also wanted to see Corey Haim and Corey Feldman (The 2 Coreys) in a movie together because both were popular in the 80's. The movie would have been too cheesy if the original idea to make it more like Goonies followed through and it wouldn't have done as well as it did so I agree with Joel Schumacher and Jason Patrick using a different approach. Also we can't underscore the fact that the soundtrack was also perfect for this movie so well done on that as well.
This movie was a very strange mix up of kid movie and adult horror. Unlike Monster Squad, Lost Boys didnt have comedic horror. The comedy and horror had a very distinct barrier, which made it feel like two seperate movies. When it was comedy, it leaned hard when it was horror and leaned hard, but they never mixed. This should not have worked, but somehow, it did.
I loved this movie as a kid but was an infant when it was in theaters. I just recently got the chance to see it in a theater and what an incredible experience. Definitely worth watching on the big screen.
All this time later and I'm still not over this is the guy who directed those horrible batman movies. It just goes to show how much we change over time.
Schumaker's early comedies are also vastly different from his later work: Car Wash is definitely worth checking out. The Wiz, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, and DC Cab are less worthwhile, but have their charms.
His horror movie "Blood Creek" with Michael Fassbender and Henry Cavill, is also worth checking out.
He also did Falling Down, Flatliners, Tigerland, Phone Booth, A Time to Kill, The Client... All great films... And Batman Forever wasn't even that bad, the studio fucked him on it then he and the studio learned the wrong lessons from its success and applied it to Batman & Robin.
The poor bastard died in 2020 with people still associating him with everyone's 2 least favourite Batman movies, and when his name comes up it's because of his misfires and outliers than his great works.
The reason Michael isn't in school is because it's Summer. Remember when Lucy tells them "You know, things are gonna change around this house when school starts."
Maria was definitely a vampire, the first thing that made me know that she was a vampire was the devious way she was looking at Lucy on the phone toward the camera, second, she had a hankerchif around her neck to hide the bite mark's on her neck and third, the young vampire's or the boss head vampire probably made her a vampire the same night she started working for that video store, thanks for the video, I was just out of highschool when this movie came out and also it's good to see footage I never saw of this movie.

Actually, it is briefly implied that Michael was still in high school, and that is was summer vacation. There is a scene where his mother, Lucy, is getting on his case about hm being out all night, and she says to him = Michael, that "things are really going to change around here when school starts."
I don't know about where you are from, but here in the US, at least here in my state of California, you can legally drop out of school once you turn 16. So with that, I just assumed Michael's character was maybe 17, getting ready to enter his senior year of high school. Especially in the deleted scene where he is telling his mom about dropping out of school to keep working. In Cali at least, his mother would have had no legal say in that once Michael turned 16.
Geez, I thought I knew everything about this film, but these reveals are incredible. Now I want the uncut remastered version with every scene restored.

I started a new job in high school back in 1989. Once I found out that the Lost Boys soundtrack was one of about 4 that they played on repeat there I was crazy excited, being that LB was my favorite movie. It was my first lesson in too much of a good thing. After 2 about months I was sick of it and hated that it stopped me from wanting to watch the movie anymore.
Great work Minty. I think this is one of your best ever! I recently read about these alternative outcome/versions and the history of what could have been. Cheers for bringing it together. Reckon you could have gone even deeper and longer with this.

Salt, while not traditionally known to ward off vampires specifically, is known for having purifying properties that can ward off evil. Meaning it likely came from GRANDPA when Michael was coming and going at night. Grandpa as we all know explains in the end that the problem with Santa Carla is "all the damn vampires" - so he would naturally live in a wooden log cabin house, stuff animals as iconography to keep away spirits and evil, salt the entrances of the home, etc. All suble things to the unsuspecting viewer but to a Vampire or a vampophile its very obvious.
I think we all do miss video stores, seeing all the videos and remembering the first time that you saw that movie ... especially this one.

I was friends with the screenwriter Jan Fischer when we studied theater together in college. She was very kind and humble. Her father was actor Victor French, best known from Little House on the Prairie and as Michael Landon’s friend in Highway to Heaven. Jan passed away too young in her early 50s.

Still got the soundtrack on audio tape, remember blasting this out whilst barreling down the highway in my 72 VJ Charger when the movie came out.
Any time I cut grass or mess around in my garden, I listen to the soundtrack of this movie starting with listening to People Are Strange on repeat at least 4 times first...
I actually saw the original version of the Lost Boys in a secret preview in New York City. I really enjoyed that version and it was a lot more like the Goonies and was fun. Then not knowing about the behind the scenes, I was very shocked when the movie hit the theaters and was entirely different and was a creepy horror show.
Most would have liked it less.
..... Fantastic movie . . They are definitely NOT misfit vampires. They're very cool, Bad boy vampires. Like Rock stars.
Kelly Jo Minter also played in Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs. She played Fool's sister Ruby.
I love you Minty! The Lost Boys, is one of my all time favorites. Great video as always.

@@aakuster Well, there is such a thing as dual citizenship. You can be a citizen of both countries…..like myself, and Mia, above. When I travel, I carry two passports. I can get through immigration in both countries quick as a zip. Lol.

Way to go Minty! I have always loved The Lost Boys but didn’t realize that the movie was very close to being a completely different movie. That was a great deep dive.
