I don't get it....
I'm having a tough time understanding the concept of why you're using certain shapes, and how do I apply this to my solos? Are you changing modes? Keys? I understand to follow the chord shapes, but seems there are notes not normally part of the scale... Are you changing modes? Or just including the arpeggio notes as part of the lead playing?

No bullshit,straight to the point, this is the best way to learn how to navigate the fret board. Not forgetting there’s 9ths 13ths ,flat or sharp 5th, 11ths, min/maj, aug, dim, minors, really need a couple life times to complete this lol

Great lesson Guthrie. That is probably one of the best lessons I have seen on this topic. One of the things that is not emphasised enough with guitar playing by instructors is the whole concept of visualisation. As you said, it only comes with doing the hard yards of practice and repetition and eventually the penny will drop and it all falls into place. I am sure your channel will grow very quickly once people see the clarity of your explanations and the quality of your tuition. Your melodic lines are like a breathe of fresh air. Looking forward to the next lesson. Keep em coming !

The two lessons you did with Brett papa "Mastering the fretboard" and "soloing over chord changes" along with the above video are the best on You tube. I have learned so much. I just finished learning two of the five solos on mastering the fretboard. 3 more to go. This lesson really compliments the two lessons with Brett. Congrats on the success of those lessons. So when did pants with air vents come out. lol

I love the way you address the guitar . When something makes sense , it is much easier to remember . Also every thing on this channel is valuable and very usable . A lot of the things you teach I had to learn by trial and error . You make learning guitar a life lesson . I wish I would have had you for a teacher when I started playing guitar in 1963 at 15 years old !
I’m watching your lessons every day, this is the only stuff that makes sense to me. Do you have any videos on basic exercises from beginner to advanced on improvisation. Your a great teacher. I’m tired of being lost on the fretboard.

I have been playing for so many years (like 35 or so) and all along I have been doing just what you are teaching without realizing it. I just thought it sounded cool. I had no idea that it was a proper thing to do. I've got a lot of holes in my playing because I do not know the names of the notes or the theory behind what I am playing. I try to play things in as many different places as possible, and then try to re-learn the same things without moving around so much. You have really boosted my confidence and inspired me to move forward and I sincerely thank you for that. I'm putting the pieces together slowly and it's so much fun. I wish I had access to this years ago but we never had RUclips back then. Next time you're in Canada, I'll buy you a beer eh!
I saw your video about how you cant always use the pentatonic scale. Today I learned Gmajor 7 chord up and down the neck. After that I learned the Gmajor 7 appregios up and down the neck. I just want to thank you for opening up my eyes 😁

So today I decided to focus on playing out of the chords, but trying to stay in one area. I remembered you did this progression and figured it would be a good one to use. At 11:00 in you take the triads and do that very thing! When this video was released it was way beyond me, I didn't understand what was happening. Now, again, it's the perfect lesson. Thanks Guthrie. Dang it man! That outro is fresh in my mind so that's the first thing I can comment on. Just like my aunt Millie knitting. Be sitting there talking to you and her fingers going like crazy. One of your best ways of showing how to build from the ground up to outline the chords. Really helpful.

RIGHT HERE, these are the keys to the kingdom. I live near New Orleans and there are so many great guitarists, and one in particular I saw play, his name is John Fohl, check him out... He plays a very musical style, where every note he plays sounds like the right note... I hit him up for a couple lessons and he does a similar thing but this is spelled out maybe a bit better, he plays through the chords and all its inversions when soloing. It doesn't sound like just riffing out licks (which I enjoy sometimes) but this is next-level stuff that seems like the "old timers" used to do more of, but it's just a way more musical way. I'm subscribing! Between you, Brett Papa and Tim Pierce, Corey Congilio, you are bringing great material for us somewhat-experienced weekend warriors to take us to the next level, and I thank you for it.

DUDE, incredible as always. It blows my mind that someone as talented as yourself is available for private instruction. I don't even feel worthy to receive a personal lesson - but I'd love to get one someday. I understand exactly what you are trying to get us to see - it's just the journey there that's a little cloudy. I'll admit - I've never seen the need for practicing arpeggios - or how they are useful - but I get it now. You need to know where those notes are so you can tag them in passing. I feel like I should check out your online lessons first assuming you cover this same stuff - but this type of thing is EXACTLY what I've been trying figure out how to do for years. I'm so happy to have someone who can explain it. Beautiful playing as always - keep it up.

On some level (Maybe?) it's nice to know that we're playing a Phrygian #4 with a flat 13 scale, but for sure, knowing what notes sound good over THIS chord, in THIS context, in THIS song is so refreshing. My progress as a player has taken a great leap forward since I discovered your channel a few months ago. Thank you for rekindling my spirit.

Yeah I m looking real close because something happens when you emphasize a half step connection to the new chord, for instance G#7 C note the 3rd,,,TO C#min when you played G#7 on the 8th fret slide up a half to C# on the 9th with the little 6th shape BAM!* BONUS POINTS* ecspl in the upper register very cool,,your brains gotta be workin right to play this thing, Your Genius Thanks Man!

Such a valuable concept and lesson. Helps with chord shapes, arpeggio/scale patterns, ear training, and fretboard mapping, but does it in a way that connects these ideas to create music.
